Phil Roberts

Phil Roberts is a composer and performer whose output ranges from peacefully ambient to rhythmically driving, with touches of inspiration from the Appalachian music of his home state, Virginia. He is the keyboardist for Trio Apéritif, an ensemble he recently co-founded with violinist Annette Misener and cellist Michael Ronstadt. He was a pianist for the Cincinnati Ballet and has toured the East Coast and United Kingdom as an accompanist for vocalists and choirs. Roberts is an advocate for neurodiversity in the arts, currently partnering with the Lynx Project in Chicago to create a program wherein his composition students write art songs setting poetry by primarily non-speaking autistic individuals. Roberts is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Composition and Music Theory at Miami University and teaches at Interlochen Center for the Arts during the summer. His chamber opera, Madeline Usher will receive its New York City premiere this fall, 2023.

Rut was written as a commission for saxophonist Carly Hood, who requested it as part of her CD project. The piece speaks to the compositional rut, or more broadly productive malaise, that the composer and many of us felt in the wake of a worldwide pandemic. Tight trills and harmonic clusters give way to open fifths, and hope for all experiencing a productive rut for whatever reason to come out on the other side of it all the better.
