Fugue of Cliffs and Dales | Original Composition in C-Minor
Noteworthy features of this fugue:
→ this is a counterfugue, which means that the answer (highlighted blue) is the inversion of the subject (hightlighted purple)
→ also the countersubject of the answer is the countersubject of the subject in inversion
→ at 1:07, there is a pseudo-entry of the answer in the middle voice, followed by an actual entry in the lower voice
→ at 1:37, a rhythmic variant of the answer is introduced, which occurs again at 2:29
→ at 1:47, there is also a rhythmic variant of the subject, which forms the first entry of the stretto section
→ at 2:07, the stretto section culminates in a very close stretto of the subject, which follows the subject a fifth higher and with only half a bar delay
The fugue has 3 parts and is written for one player.

Noteworthy features of this fugue: → the fugue has a tonal answer (the second note is transposed only a fourth higher); because this is often harmonically relevant throughout the piece, I colour-coded the answer with a paler purple than the subject → the inversion of the subject (highlighted in blue) appears three times: already in the exposition (at 0:20), where I chose it as the third entry t...

Noteworthy features of this fugue: → this is a so-called “Fächerfuge”: after the first answer is stated in the exposition, the fugue does not return to the home key, but continues to transpose, like a staircase, until finally reaching the home key; usually, each transposition is to the respective dominant of the previous key, but in the fugue at hand, it is to the subdominant → in major entries...

I’ve been busy with other projects lately, so here is a piece I composed about five years ago. I recorded this with my mobile phone back then, on my slightly detuned piano with my mediocre playing skills. I didn’t know counterpoint yet and hardly any music theory. It’s a nice document of the way I’ve come as a composer. Have a nice day! ^^

Final Countdown Fugue (for rock band) | Original Composition in F♯-Minor
Переглядів 1,1 тис.6 місяців тому
Noteworthy features of this fugue: → this is a so-called stretto fugue (or “close fugue”), where the subject and the answer overlap already in the exposition; this works because I use a tonal answer, which happens to be in invertible counterpoint with the tail of the subject (i.e., the piano riff of the song) → at 0:56, a variation of the subject is overlayed by the melody of the song lyrics → ...

Very nice, but the ending felt a bit abrupt...
@@armany1999 Thanks a lot! :D And yeah, I get that a lot about my endings. I’m working on it. <3
This is one of my favorites. I especially like the middle section (from measure 21 to 31) where the top melody floats irregularly but gracefully (just like the swinging fall of a leaf with ups and downs), and the call & response in the bottom is especially groovy. My only small gripe is that just as the music seems to build up to measure 29, the climax is short-lived and dies down a bit too quickly for my taste. Though I think it's growing on me, and the stretto coda in the end is nice (again calling to mind a falling leaf). Amazing work!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! (= I get what you mean about the short climax. You can learn counterpoint and fugal composition in half a year, but the intricacies of buildup and release you keep learning all your life.
Great work! It's always great to meet fellow counterpoint-folk here.
Thanks a lot! :D
@@averynhiell You're welcome! I've actually heard a number of your pieces here and there; your music is wonderful and inspiring to a fellow composer like me.
@@MitchBoucherComposer Thank you so much! I recognise you, you have already written quite a few comments. I appreciate that a lot! :D

I LOVE THIS DUDE LIKE THIS IS STRAIGHT UP HEAVENLY (which sounds did you use for each instrument bc i dont think the new free musescore strings sound that good especially the violas)
@@mohamedplayz3995 Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! :D I used MuseStrings from the MuseSounds library, it’s free if you have Musescore Studio 4, but you have to download it manually.
Nice, I particularly liked the part after about measure 48 or so :)
Thanks a lot! ^^
Just as I started listening to this it started to pour with rain!
@@ianholloway3778 I’m sure there is magic involved.
Your composition reflects the depth and beauty common to the Art of Fugue. It was a great experience to listen to such a structured fugue for the first time. I have also uploaded fugues to my channel, but they are much simpler compared to this one. I truly admire your work.
@@QlomoOfficial Thank you so much, I appreciate that a lot! :D I will try and check out some of your works.
My poor bassoon fingers are crying
I’m sorry. xD
This is amazing, using all those lovely thirds and sixths, but I have to ask, why do you sometimes use two grace notes instead of a mordent?
Thanks a lot! ^^ I think I used the grace notes purely for playback reasons. If I remember correctly, I didn’t like the sound of the mordents in this version of Musescore 4.
@@averynhiell That's fair enough. Sometimes, if I don't like the way the computer plays an ornament, I'll still put it on the score but make it not play in the properties pannel. Then add the right grace notes but make them invisible.
@@inanis9801 I do that, too. But sometimes I’m too lazy. xD
@ Yeah I feel that. Sometimes I'll finish a score then realise there was a problem with it. I tell myself, "I'll fix it the next time I open the score." I have a string quartet which hasn't been opened for four years and I still know what I want to change.
@@inanis9801 Haha, relatable.
Reminds me of Gubaidulina
very risky subject but it panned out great. lovely fugue, congratulations!
@@ebu6880 Thank you! I get that a lot. xD
@@averynhiell yeah because it's impressive LOL it would've taken me quite a bit of work to come up with a solution for a subject like that
@ Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! ^^
I LOVE THIS
Thank you so much! :D
A question, are you self-taught? Or have you undertaken composition studies?
I have had a private music teacher for almost three years now who taught me most of what I know about music theory. Before that, I had piano lessons for a dozen or so years but learnt very little compared to the last three years.
From 1:23, the modulation is 😲 brilliant! Especially the fact that it doesn't land on the downbeat! I'm blown away!
@@Counterpoint4fun Thank you so much! :D I love it when people appreciate specific aspects of a piece. I was myself very pleased with how this modulation turned out. It took me quite a while to get it right. ^^
So good
@@냥이대마왕 Thank you! :D
0:34 bold move making piano II's left hand go first, in this case I think it works, but that's because you made it work
Thank you, it’s nice when details like this are appreciated! ^^
Whos playin it first
Excellent!
Thanks a lot! ^^
How did you get Glenn Gould to play it?
I got my connections. (;
Brilliant! Could it be a reference to "Mein Weg hat Gippfel und Wellenteller" by Arvo Pärt?
Thank you! ^^ The title is similar by accident, and I hadn’t heard the piece before, so no, it’s not a reference. (:
You made a blunder on the upper note of 27th measure. Should let a long B or Dotted B and then B-C.
While it may be a matter of taste how effective the device is here, I employed it quite on purpose. (: The d in the middle voice is a so-called suspension, which is resolved two eigth-notes later. The same thing happens in bar 25, btw. The harmony is already c-minor in the second half of either bar; the suspension just adds a little more gravity, in my opinion.
Suena algo salsero en alguna partes
¡Jajaja! xD ¿Dónde, por ejemplo?
0:30 how did you make those parallel octaves work ?
@@DPNack_ These are not actually considered parallel octaves, it is called “doubling”, which is when two voices are completely parallel (usually in octaves) for a longer stretch. (:
@averynhiell oh I see now thanks
just out of curiosity, why do you still use musescore 3 and not the latest version? awesome fugue btw.
@@Andscool Thank you! ^^ I switch between the two versions, depending on what instrumental sound works best for the piece at hand in my opinion. But I’m certainly biased towards MS3 because I’m already used to it and have a whole bunch of customised palettes and key-shortcuts there. Also, MS4 feels more unwieldy to me. And while it has certainly richer playback options, it also has issues with playback that MS3 doesn’t have. But there are a couple of pieces on my channel which I recorded with MS4. Do you have no issues with MS4?
@ oh I definitely have some issues with MS4, especially with the performance and playback. For some reason, when a score has a lot of instruments and/or is really long, the performance completely tanks. The playback has this weird faint sound that comes after a note is played on piano, and is most noticeable in the lower register. However everything else works great for me, I just am excited to be able to add custom SmuFL fonts in 4.5 because I’m not a huge fan of most of the ones offered currently.
@@Andscool There you go. ^^ I want to concentrate on the music, not on appeasing a stubborn software.
Thanks Averyn for another fugue in your style. Full of rules... and still full of life. I listen to it half a dozen times and are still not bored.
@@alindmay Thank you so much, I appreciate it a lot! <3
This is awesome! I would like to point out something at 1:18 however. The tenor should be written as a duplet instead of two dotted eighths. This also applies to the dotted eighths preceded by an eighth rest + sixteenth rest. It should be an eighth rest followed by an eighth note inside of a duplet. A duplet is equal in value to two dotted eighths, and is much better for reading!
@@wheelmanmitch Thanks a lot! (= I wasn’t aware of this, thank you for pointing it out. I don’t see why it should be necessarily easier to read, though. Tuplets are always relative to the amount of time they stretch, which you have to parse while reading. Dotted eights are always exactly the same length. I find it hard to imagine that this should be more than a personal preference, but I am by no means an expert on notation. Would you care to elaborate? (:

@@rubm3907 In some of my videos, I use Musescore 4, with special VSTs/soundfonts. But somehow, the dynamics are very weak, at least in the soundfonts I have tried out. So, if I want a fugue to have very expressive dynamics, I fall back on Musescore 3. Was that your question?
