Come Home | Sigma fp + Super Takumar

A short I've been working on featuring Trueson Daugherty. Come Home was a spontaneous creation with my friend Trueson on a sunny December day. I gave him a few visual prompts and we started filming with little narrative in mind. After seeing a rough cut, Trueson was inspired to compose the music and spoken word that the final film was cut to. This gave it meaning and depth. I am so happy with h...

This lens is something special, however it has been overshadowed by its younger brother the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. It's not only the single coatings that make this lens special but also its unique build compared to the other Takumars of this era. The Takumar from this era that overshadows all others is the legendary 50mm f/1.4 however the wider and slower lenses of this time are exceptional as well. This is great to see! I keep going back and forth on the 8 vs 7 element veriosn. I have the 55mm 1.8 but that is a bit underwhelming. Great to see a video test of this lens. Thank you.

    I have never ever understood why focal lengths have to be rigidly this or that, seemingly by some regulation or else they are strange or odd or even surely just arn't real serious lenses. Are they? I have been using DSLRS and digital mirrorless from 1964 and 2011 respectively. I can see why 50mm or there-abouts is considered a standard 35mm lens and the starting point for all other lens focal length nomenclature and designations. I can see why a lens is designated a telephoto lens and I can see why a wide angle is designated as such all relative to a 35mm camera standard lens. I can also see why with lens design improving, an even wider lens became an ultra wide lens. What I cannot see, is that a lens must be 85mm, 135mm or 35mm or some other seemingly set number. Did this ever mean that a lens should only be used at infinity as the focal length (actual field of view) may change as it is focused closer? Of course not. Lets face it a standard lens is a range from about 45mm to 58mm. The 58mm was probably a 55mm limit originally but some superb 58mm lens from some top makers required that everyone change their ideas. Because it was too short for a tele lens and they were generally too good to be passing phase or rubbished as not withing a set on pain of death defined range. So why has a 90mm lens become inferior to an 85mm lens. Or is it the other way round? Why is a 20mm lens correct and a 21mm or 19mm is odd? Or is the whole lot strange and it has to be actually 17mm? There is a lot of difference between a 17mm and a 21mm. Oh yes and if the 21mm has the correct amber/yellow toning you want as a characteristic right now, keep it away from UV light. I like the way you make this lens part of what you want the images to be. Or is it the current characteristics of the lens are ideal for what you want to create. Either way you get the results you want and are happy with. As a viewer here so am I.

    Absolutely wonderful imagines, composition and "light" with these 2 Minolta's on your S-fp ! Well done. The 21 / 85mm really match nicely with the low contrast rendering. The 21mm MC / 20mm MD are expensive and quite rare... I wonder how different they look compared to a Nikkor 20mm or a cheap Samyang 19mm?

    • @shadowcultur
      @shadowcultur Місяць тому

      I have the first version of the Rokkor MC 21mm f/2.8. It’s a heavy lens that flares a lot and yes, it was expensive but I enjoy it. The build quality is second to none. This is the era when Minolta was making lenses for Leica. If build quality is important to you then that might persuade you. I’ve held some of the old Nikon wide angles and they don’t feel as good in the hands as these old Rokkors.

    How would you say do those Minolta lenses compare to your Takumars? Would you choose one over the other? I own several Takumars myself and love how they look and feel, especially on my fp :) The 85mm was next on my list, should I consider getting the Rokkor instead?
