I Am Not a Mechanic
United Kingdom
Приєднався 6 чер 2020
Videos about the cheap old cars I run as daily drivers and the ham-fisted repairs and maintenance I sometimes try to carry out. I am not a mechanic, not even a gifted amateur, but I do have a hammer and plenty of zip ties.

1977 Princess 1800 Cold Start - After Tuning
Переглядів 3272 роки тому
I'd forgotten about this short clip taken in 2021, several months after the first cold start video, by which time it'd been timed up, had new points, the carb was adjusted and a host of other minor mechanical work had been done. At the time I videoed this, it had an ignition switch issue (fixed soon after, it turned out to be a corroded plug connection), hence jumping the starter, but otherwise...
Granvia Tour
Переглядів 562 роки тому
A walkaround of my self-converted Toyota Granvia 3.0TD 4x4 camper van back when it was up for sale. I was quite pleased with this conversion and it was a good van in a lot of ways but poor fuel economy and problems sourcing parts eventually meant I had to sell it. It went to a new home about 2 years ago so is no longer available.
Servicing a 2001 Ford Puma 1.7 - Part 1

I acquired this tidy, low mileage Puma a few months ago. It hasn't had an oil change in a couple of years although it's done very few miles in that time, so this is the process I used for changing the oil and filters.
First Start of my 1977 Leyland Princess after Carb Rebuild
Переглядів 3,5 тис.4 роки тому
Update: the hard starting was fixed soon after ua-cam.com/video/aP7HQxgQn9U/v-deo.html This is my 1977 British Leyland Princess 1800, recently put back on the road after being parked up from 1992 until 2019. It ran and drove but had a lot of issues, one being that the carb was clogged and the float was leaking. This is a first start attempt after rebuilding the carb with new float, needle and p...
Do you still have your puma? Hows it going now?
Long since gone to a new home as I needed something more practical and daily use through winter wasn't doing the rusty bodywork any good.
If you take them stupid gloves off - you wont keep dropping small items
L'auto che proprio me ne sono innamorato dalla prima uscita!!!!!!!!!!!🇮🇹♥️🙌👌👏👍💎
Perché non me la vendi a me!!!!?!!?!!♥️🇮🇹💎🙌👌👍👏
I've just got myself a 2000 on an X plate which has been SORN for seven years. The last MoT was on 5/7/15... Bodywork and subframe look pretty good and seems rust free, but a blown head gasket is going to take plenty of man hours and plenty of cash. .... I enjoyed this part 2 as it is going to help me if other jobs that might need doing, which I'm sure they will ? ... Thanks for posting.
Are you sure the carb was rebuilt ?!!😂
Isn't that a bit slow after starting? On a cold start with well tune carburettors the turnover speed is about 1200 to 1500rpm until warmup when the speed is reduced by pushing in the choke to about 850rpm?
Yes it doesn't sound like a cold start.
good job, do you know where I could find a 1.7 crankshaft pulley? it has become untraceable
Ford dealers can still get parts for these cars, try your local dealer - or contact someone breaking one on Ebay, sure to be a few secondhand ones around.
@@phillacey8675 already done, it is no longer manufactured at ford and not found on ebay
Hi, Were you turning it clockwise to remove the oil filter? Is it a reverse thread?
Sorry, it was a long time ago, I can't remember!
If your 3rd brake is not working, check the wire om the outside of the o/s boot gas strut that is the earth path.
You're correct, that is what the problem was 👍
@@iamnotamechanic884 Good, glad to be of help. Hope you are still enjoying puma ownership!
Thankyou for sharing, I learnt to drive in my dads Princess 1.8, very familiar engine sound
Thanks!
needs a new battery X car😂
I love the princess.and yours.my dad had a total of 5 in the 70s and 80s .the sound of the engine starting takes me right back.and this one is practically the same age as me.lovely colour too
20/4 22 - Good Stuff ! What is the box on the underside of the bonnet for ? I've previously tried Iridium s' plugs which don't perform when hot re-starting - reverted to FoMoCos. Burton Ford Performance offer FoMoCos in their latest '22 catalouge which would confirm these are the best replacement brand. Think the M6 beauty cover pan heads screws can be replaced with 0BA threaded ones too. So brake cleaner is a suitable substitute for MAF cleaner as you prove. Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge. Recently in sub-zero temperatures l snaped the plastic bonnet support rod anchor moulding clip & the the washer bottle cap lace - neither big issues but additions to To Do List. My Drivers side rear wheel arch suffers tin worm - have coated with lanolin solution from Rust Busters at Boston which appears to have delayed further deterioration - other side is almost visually unscathed - it's what can't be seen that concerns me. Read in a 'Classics' mag some time ago that some Puegeot panel profiles are used by the welders that offer Puma wheel arch replacement bodywork. Curious to know where you're located. Thanks again, P.
The forums say that box is a resonator to make the engine sound better for the driver. I've heard Peugeot 206 front wing profiles can be made to work, I got new rear arch panels off eBay but they're not well made and will require a lot of labour to fit so I will go with the simple, much cheaper option for now.
@@iamnotamechanic884 21/4 22 - Good Luck ! Thanks for sharing you're info.
GREAT VIDEO !! . I always think it pays to whip the plugs out ... squirt some release oil down the bores (not WD40) ..... then spin her over on the starter .! . Then add some 2-stroke into the bores and repeat to just "oil up" the bores and rings and when she fires .... see loads of healthy smoke filling the driveway ! . Yeh add some thin oil to the dash pot ... then lift the piston a few times also. . Nice old car though mate :-)
Thanks, it's long since gone to a new home now but it had been running before this video so wasn't much point otherwise yes, I would have put oil down the cylinders. I bought it after the previous owner had pulled it out of a shed it's been in since 1992, he got it running but did no mechanical work to it. Yes, I remember I did add oil to the dashpot though, good point. It ran a lot better after the timing and mixture were sorted, they were the main reasons for the hard starting. It usually fired up first turn of the key after that.
@@iamnotamechanic884 Cheers mate ! . They drive so nice compared with modern cars and they did make a "VanDen Plas" model which would have been amazing ! . Ah new cars are so boring.... my favorite is the Dacia Duster coz it reminds me of a Lada Niva ! . Cheers for replying !
17/4 22 lnteresting to see fuel filter change. Any merit in using magnetic sump plug at the next engine oil change ? Where are the worst areas for tin worm ? What are the best tyres when replacements are due? Thanks for help & advice - have 'bought' wife's Millenium at 53 000 miles.
I have no experience of using magnetic sump plugs but I'd assume that if there was any swarf in the oil they might catch, it would be a major issue anyway! Rot gets everywhere but mainly sills, subframe and rear arches. I like Uniroyal Rainsport or Toyo Proxes tyres for these - excellent grip and good value.
@@iamnotamechanic884 20/4 22 - Thanks for your help. One thing l need now is sufficient time to recommission my Puma & then time after to enjoy it! Best, P.
I have one of these and love it! 😁
They are brilliant, if only they didn't rot so fast!
Did you not think to charge the battery before you attempted to start the car? You should give that engine some hard revving after it eventually started, that would have cleared it & would not do it any harm! I think you lack some common sense my friend & need to go back to school for some refresher lessons on how to start a carburettor car!
3:25 you are welcome!
I know how this feels.
Pumping the accelerator has no effect on an engine with an SU carburettor since it has no acceleration pump.
Fair point, I hadn't thought of that - doesn't need it anyway now, starts on the button!
You shouldn't pump the accelerator AT ALL Mr MMJ!! No need for it whatsoever & achieves nothing really except wastage of petrol!
Had one the same coulor with the B series engine years ago.😃
