    I realize this is a late comment, but are you still using an analog Zettelkasten in addition to Heptabase? I'm interested in an analog system, but it seems like most people end up switching to a digital system at some point.

    • @forrestrperry
      @forrestrperry 28 днів тому

      I am not using an analog Zettelkasten anymore. Even when I was using it, I was backing everything up in Obsidian, where I like to do this thing I call "relevance-level tagging." It became too onerous to maintain both the analog Zettelkasten and the "enhanced" version of it it Obsidian (I put "enhanced" in quotation marks because some might argue that anything digital is always inferior to analog, as cell phones are clearly inferior to the rotary dial phones, *of course*). If I had started with Heptabase from the beginning, I likely would have used only Heptabase. But currently I am using Heptabase + Obsidian because (a) I love working within Heptabase, (b) one can't do relevance-level tagging in Heptabase, and (c) I had way too many notes in Obsidian for it to be other than a pain in the behind to move everything over to Heptabase.

    The greatest of the modern philosophers, Immanual Kant, wrote in the Critique of Pure Reason that we refine categories from the ideas we have, not the other way around. We don't start with categories as this video recommends. If you do that, then you are not collecting ideas but organizing data. Your links and connections should inform you of the categories, not the other way around. Otherwise, you are just replicating what librarians do.

    I don't have anything to add, except that I laughed hard when I was called out as one of those people who just likes to keep track of ideas. I only found out about ZK about 2 weeks ago, and the idea of it got me pretty excited. Both my wife and I are learning about it so that we can use it for ourselves. Because we enjoyoy learning and making connections between ideas. Learning is a goal in and of itself. And if we don't write down the things we learn, they eventually get lost.

    What was described in this video, was it really Zettelkasten? I heard nothing about indexes and card identifiers. Or was it the video maker taking a famous word, Zettelkasten, and explaining his own thing instead? To me is sounded like he divides card boxes internally in smaller compartments by topic and then put cards in according to topic. That is not Zettelkasten, is it?

    • @forrestrperry
      @forrestrperry Місяць тому

      Good question. There is no such thing as “really Zettelkasten” (and no such thing as “THE Zettelkasten method”). I didn’t realize that until reading a piece by Chris Aldrich that points out the variety of ways of using a Zettelkasten that predated Niklas Luhmann’s way of using a Zettelkasten (can’t find the piece right now, unfortunately). If you watch a little further into the video series, you’ll see that I pretty quickly abandoned the (very bad) idea of using folder cards. My explanation for why folder cards are a bad idea can be found here, in case you’re curious: www.fpnotes.io/why-i-stopped-using-folder-cards-in-my-analog-zettelkasten/

      I’m pasting here my response to your related question about the other video you recently commented on… Scott Scheper and others do things this way, but if you do things this way [start off with a bunch of categories, or “folder cards,” that is], you are likely to spend too much time agonizing over the question of where exactly to put new cards. If you watch further in the Old-School Zettelkasten series, you’ll see that I abandoned folder cards. My explanation for why I did so can be found here: www.fpnotes.io/why-i-stopped-using-folder-cards-in-my-analog-zettelkasten/

    It occurred to me that we can use three digit numbers and key them to the Dewey Decimal system (for those of us familiar with using he library). That way the number would give a clue as to the content. (you could also do this with a four digit number, by just adding an additional digit to the DDS number). Your thoughts? 000 - Computer science, information and general works 100 - Philosophy and psychology 200 - Religion 300 - Social sciences 400 - Language 500 - Pure science 600 - Technology 700 - Arts and recreation 800 - Literature 900 - History and geography

Your content has partially helped, but I would like to know how to get past that fear, when I already know that is what's stopping me from creatively writing what I read in my own words.... Any advice? I couldn't find anyone else who might be able to answer this, as I could really relate to how I fall prey to collector's fallacy and then I tried doing the reminders on paper instead of highlighting (which still takes long to finish and then I forget the content and I need to read it all over for details I may miss) and then I tried implementing RTL but I'm really not getting anywhere because it's all taking away my time in exchange for no tangible work done.

      Not at this time. The Heptabase team has indicated that they might create a a Zotero integration in the future, but I don’t know when that might happen. If extracting metadata from PDFs is crucial for your workflow, consider checking out videos that show how to use Zotero with Obsidian. Danny Hatcher has some good videos on that.
