    I paid for the Scrintal early access for this type of feature (which I love for research project planning). The idea of being able to go back to my large Obsidian vault and still have this feature… for free… and have the other benefits of obsidian like dataview, better long-form writing, etc…, is very exciting! Paid for a year of Scrintal and will continue to use it as it is getting better with development too, but I’m very much looking forward to this obsidian update! Last thing I want from obsidian is some type of web app so that I can access my vault on my work computer since I cannot download any external applications on it.

      Thanks for your comment here, Nathan.
      Yes, a web version of the app would be great. In my own case, it would mean I could finally require that my students use Obsidian for building a Zettelkasten.
      The reason it needs to be a web version for my students is that (a) plenty of them do not own their own laptops (they can borrow them from the university, but I'm guessing they wouldn't be permitted to download Obsidian onto them-but maybe not) and (b) I've never been a fan of using Obsidian on a tablet or smart phone (the latter is something I can almost guarantee all of my students do own). Thus I've spent the past few years in the courses I teach experimenting with apps that have web-based versions, including Notion, Remnote, and Hypernotes.

    This is so cool! I have been plagued by trying to make a decision between screen, tall or napkin for weeks now dreading paying a monthly subscription to those companies, not that they’re bad companies, but I generally don’t do any subscriptions for these type of services. The fact that these visual, brainstorming, graphic, notetaking, apps are so powerful, I’d be willing to pay 25 bucks to add on this feature to Obsidian. The fact that they’re going to do it for free is awesome enough but I may just want to actually drop some money on it because of this, keep it up man. First time I’ve seen a video from your channel. Looking forward to more videos to come.

      Thanks for the comments, Aaron. I am like you in being resistant to paying subscription fees. I'd much rather shell out, say, $200 or $300 as a one-time payment for an amazing app than pay $50 a year for the thing (or over $100 for an app like, say, DEVONthink and then extra money every 2-4 years for an update).
      Since I've known for a while that Obsidian is probably going to be my note-making app of choice for quite some time, I'm happy to send money to the app developers. So, if parting with $25 isn't a hardship at this time, I would encourage you do so.
      Again, thanks for the comments and checking out my videos. FYI: I just posted to my website a piece on annotating PDFs on an iPad, so if that's something that interests you, check it out: www.fpnotes.io/pdf-annotation-for-those-who-are-old-school/

      @@forrestrperry Agreed! And what those subscription apps are really saying is that their apps are worth potentially hundreds or a thousand dollars if you keep them like any other app you still have from 5-10 years ago on your computer. They may be worth that much, but when making a decision up front, it just makes me pause. Anyways, thank you for your reply, I love it when creators correspond and I will check out the PDF annotation you made! Thanks again and keep it up!

    Yesterday I noticed the update and played with the Canvas. I know Obsidian was working on this. But it totally blowed me away when I tested it. Super Thanx for the double click tip and changes the colour of the line. If you combine this with Dataview it opens a lot of possibilities ☺

      Ooo, if you care to elaborate on how you see Canvas and Dataview working together in promising ways, do let us know. I make somewhat heavy use of Dataview queries and tables in my vault. I also have things set up so that I can get a visual representation of connections using Excalibrain. In fact, I assumed I was going to have to use Excalibrain and, for mind maps, Excalidraw. I’m so glad that Obsidian has made all of this easier (at least for my own use case).

      I actually have several (at least eight) video scripts I wrote over the summer that are focused specifically on using Dataview queries and tables so that you don't have to bother looking at the backlinks to see how one, say, claim page (or "idea card") relates to other claims, evidence, questions, sources (authors, books, articles, lectures, podcasts, videos), etc. I have yet to turn those scripts into videos. Hoping to do so starting maybe a month or two from now.

      @forrestrperry  Рік тому +1

      Not sure. But from what I've heard from others who have paid more attention in the past to the amount of time that elapses between the release of an insider build and its release to the general public, it usually takes "a few weeks." I'm gonna hazard a guess here and say probably within 3-4 weeks. But that's just a (mostly uninformed) guess.

    That's certainly something.
    Since I haven't tried it, I don't have anything productive to add but, since we're here, how many vaults do you use? I have things together in the same place but have been thinking that having a separate research/teaching vault like you appear to have would be useful.
    Hey, you haven't left yet. I think I heard you say you backed up your analog zettelkasten in Obsidian in a previous video and thought that was sort of redundant and, also, something I do, which I think may be redundant as well. Perhaps not redundant but probably taking more time than I need. Have you written about this? Do you think in your analog version then sit down periodically and type things out? Is the analog simply something you teach but not personally use (as you are a digital VIP)?

    • @forrestrperry
      @forrestrperry  Рік тому +1

      Hey Terry: there's a WHOLE lot I would like to say in response to your questions here. Unfortunately, with end-of-the-semester grading I'm currently in the midst of, I'm going to have to respond somewhat briefly (that was the intention; looks like I failed).
      I USE SEVERAL VAULTS
      I have maybe six vaults or so. At least two of them I think it makes sense to keep as separate vaults (the one I use for research and the one I use to keep track of work I do at my university). Several of the others could perhaps be collapsed into a single vault.
      In case you aren't aware, you can have a single vault that contains all your other vaults as folders, but you can open up each of those folders as a separate vault. I believe Dan Allosso does this and plenty of others.
      Since I use Obsidian's sync service, I don't want to jam everything into a single vault because I worry that vault might then eventually end up being larger than the 10GB allowed for synced vaults.
      In case you haven't seen Nicole van der Hoeven's video about the number of vaults she uses, you can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/IV3PHeyCHvc/v-deo.html (it was posted about three weeks ago).
      ANALOG ZETTELKASTEN + OBSIDIAN
      Hope you don't mind that my response to this set of questions is going to consist largely of my response to someone else who asked a similar question (in relation to a different video, I think).
      I use Obsidian in conjunction with my old-school (analog) Zettelkasten. I plan on making a video about this within maybe a month or so, but in the meantime I can say that I use Obsidian both to (a) back up and (b) enhance the work I do on analog cards (the fact that I use Obsidian to ENHANCE what I'm doing with analog cards means that what I'm doing isn't entirely redundant).
      About the latter (that is, using Obsidian to enhance the work I do with analog cards): when I add the title and content of a ZK card to an Obsidian file, I typically add 1-3 tags to it, something it wouldn't really make sense to do in an analog Zettelkasten.
      In addition, each time I create a new file for a ZK card in Obsidian, I trigger a template that generates a bunch of Dataview queries that can be used to create something like a relational database, which I use to create connections between, for example, a claim page (the equivalent of an analog "idea card") and articles, authors, books, podcast episodes, videos, "tagpages," research questions, evidence, etc.
      To give you a visual for what I'm talking about here, I have posted online one of my ZK cards as it exists in Obsidian: www.craft.do/s/lph8dhD1tw8moj
      Just know that what I have posted there is just part of the note in Obsidian. Not included in the screenshot are all the sections containing Dataview queries.

      Appreciated. Your operational definition of a 'brief reply' appears to be similar to mine.
      I hadn't really thought through using multiple vaults (i.e. I hadn't seen others doing it) but it makes sense, not least because of the 10GB sync issue).
      That shared card answers about three related questions/ideas that I have, including the primary reason that I continue to go away from analog (for this) and back to Obsidian. Framing it as 'expanding' ideas is simple enough that it lines things up nicely for me.

    • @forrestrperry
      @forrestrperry  Рік тому +1

      Ah, great to know. I must confess that I wouldn't be too surprised if I eventually go fully digital (apart from still handwriting notes on source cards), but for several months now I've been really diggin' analog note-making.
