Canon EOS R5C exposing to the right - 8K RAW light
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
R5C raw light can be noisy in some circumstances but like many log formats over exposing one or two stops and lowering iso or exposure in post can be an effective solution. False color was used to judge exposure for these clips with specular highlights at the threshold of clipping. R5C raw light seems to have good highlight latitude so over exposing can be effective to reduce noise in shadows a...

Testing dynamic range and latitude of the 1DC 4K using c-log in low light. Seems there's plenty of information retained in the shadows and highlights if care is taken with the grade. Canon 24-105mm f4, C-log, ISO 1600, graded FCPx - ColorFinale2 SHOW MORE

Canon 5D Mark III 3 - Dream performed by Michelle Kwok.
Always impressed to see your work. I‘m about to upgrade from a 5D III with magic lantern. Would you recommend a 1DC or EOS R5?
Thanks for watching and appreciate your comment. In regard to the 1DC or R5, I think it comes down to preference of how the image looks, how you like to work and how much you want to spend. I still love the image from the 1Dc but it lacks a lot of features that the newer cameras have.
That shii looks beautiful.🎥
Am I tripping, or......... lol. Is this the Canon 5DMK2 ? Can't be lol. That camera didn't have 4K. What's up w/ your title ?! What's going on here ?! lol.
No I was tripping when I made late night typo 🤣corrected now.
@@csound55 haha fasho ! Nice footage man. Bout to check out your channel.
@@TopshelfJunior Footage was supplied by Moc Filmmaker - I just had a go at the colour grade.
@@csound55 Hmmmmmmm. lol. Ok, nice color grade for sure !
@@TopshelfJunior Thanks!
How is that Canon D5? 8K50? Maybe R5II
Lol my bad just corrected the title
Nice! How do you like Hong Kong? It's always fascinated me as a place to live, but seems expensive vs the UK. Re: the 1DC... I think for it's current ebay price, it still has the most filmic 4K 24p we can get! (in that price range)
Thanks for watching. I've lived Hong Kong for 14 years and still enjoy it here. Rent is expensive but other living expenses are not too bad. The 1Dc can't compete with newer cameras for things like focus and exposure aids etc but I still love the colour and look of the image it produces. I find particularly there's a lot of depth and density with the colour which is impressive considering it's only an 8bit 422 codec. It's not very sharp but ironic that some film makers go to a lot trouble choosing vintage lenses and and mist filters etc to have a less digital and sterile look with newer cameras - the 1Dc has an organic and filmic image straight out of the camera.
@@csound55 Interesting, thanks for the info on HK. From what I've seen, we'd pay a lot in rent to live in a tiny apartment, right? Totally agree on the 1DC. Sucks for the lack of modern features. You need to add a monitor just for the basic exposure tools! Totally agree regarding the cinematic image and the 8-bit codec. It seems to do WAY better than most cameras in this (current ebay) price range for cinematic BACKLIGHTING, too. Just the way it handles shadows etc. Really hard to describe.
@@FrankCastleTIG Indeed the rent you'd pay for a 3 bedroom apartment in many countries would only get you a shoe box in Hong Kong.
I always tell people.. If I had to live somewhere other than the US, it would either be London, Copenhagen, or Hong Kong. Loved my time there, especially while doing photography. It reminded me a little of New York, but mixed with some San Francisco, and Asia obviously. Anyway, nice video man.. Footage looked good !
Thank you! Hong Kong is a great place for photography and film making - so much contrast in terms of old and modern and cultural diversity. Looking forward to visiting New York sometime.
Lovely! I like the handheld shots, shows the 1DC + 24-105L combo can produce some brilliant results in good hands. Also, thanks again for bringing me back to a neighbourhood with a lot of memories. Would usually go to Dong Kee on the 2nd floor of Sheung Wan food centre to have a beer and HK dai pai dong style food for dinner/supper after walking around the area
Thanks Lippy! These images are from a few years ago & finally got around to editing & grading. The old 1Dc is still one of my favourite cameras - not as sharp and clean as the newer cameras but has something unique nonetheless. Some of the shops and restaurants have changed in Sheung Wan since this footage was taken but the neighbourhood has not lost it's charm. I sometimes visit the food centre for a meal also :)
Shot in neutral or log?
Log
Very cool. Great music.
Hey thanks!
Classic canon colors can’t be beat!
Thanks for watching
From what I’ve seen on other videos and what I’ve read online….. it seems like the R5C has some sensor light banding at very high ISO levels. Is this true? Have you noticed this while using it at night?
I haven't experienced the banding issue you mentioned though I rarely go above 6400 iso.

Awesome!
Thanks!
@@csound55 I think I have some video footage of Cheung Chau from the 80s. I will upload it if I find it. The island has changed so much and yet has not changed at all...
@@FlashesOfTime I'd be interested to see how it looked in the 80s. The fishing industry probably hasn't changed too much but there's a lot of tourists going there now.

so smooth !!!
Thanks for your comment
You have a sharp eye. I like how you saw some geometry of the streets as part of the composition. Maybe it's a fluke, but I like it.
Thanks appreciate your comment - I studied at art school many years ago I think that can influence how to see things.
Cant wait to see more footage - great angles. Looking good in low light.
Thanks for watching.
Canon RAW is a pain to edit, how did you manage to get through these edits in post?
Apparently Canon raw runs smoothly on a Mac Studio Ultra M2 - I still use a 2017 iMac so yeah it's a pain. The workaround is to generate proxies simultaneously when shooting raw. The proxy files are small and easy to edit - then relink the raw files for the grade.
how do you keep your log RAW footage looking that clean? whenever I shoot in raw with my r5c, I see lots of noise before doing any adjustments to the RAW files
Thanks for watching. Raw log footage often looks more noisey before it's graded as the black levels are elevated. For shooting in low light I use the following steps to keep raw footage looking as clean as possible. Auto black balance (ABB) with the body cap on before shooting. Use the base ISOs of 800 or 3200. Over expose somewhere between 1 and 2 stops depending on the scene you're shooting. If you use the waveform to judge exposure you can allow highlights to go right to the top of the waveform scale - a little past 100% IRE - as long as they don't visually flatten at the top the highlights should be recoverable in the grade. Reduce the overall exposure in the grade to correct levels.
Thanks so much for this info. Going to try it. I was getting worried about my R5C with all the noice in 8k raw. 😂
Great video! I have a question! Do you k nos if I can adjust the color of canon raw light to another color space, like sony slog3?
Thanks for your comment. You can experiment with different color spaces in Resolve but I don't think Sony slog3 will give you the best result using Canon raw light footage.
Can you please show how you color grade the raw footage in resolve or premier pro ? I record with Canon R5 not the C model with clog-3 and Clog-2 and iso set to lowestpossible 800-3200 but I get a very noisy image. I also find it super hard to color grad the canon R5 footage to get a cinematic look knowing that I am very good at photography color grading. When I test with other cameras like red and arri footage it is super easy to get a hollywood look with those deep contrasty colors :/
With both the R5 & R5C cameras I find overexposing by a stop or 2 and then lowering iso or correcting exposure when grading is effective for minimising noise. I've found the best way to optimise dynamic range and get rich colors with Resolve is to use a Color Managed or ACES workflow. Darren Mostyn and Cullen Kelly have some detailed instruction for these methods on their youtube channels.
Yo this cameras footage looks exatcly like the 5d mark iii magic lantern footage but sharper. Impressive!
Thanks for your comment. Yeah 1Dc image holds up well considering the codec is only 8bit.
Wow! Such amazing colors. Great job. Did you go for the base iso of 800 for the sunset wide shot? Was it shot entirely in 8K Rawlight?
Thanks for your comment. This footage was shot in 2020 with the original clog 8k raw which has a base iso of 400. Took me a couple of years to get around to editing. It was before the R5 firmware was updated to include clog 3.
Could this camera be used for a full length film, or a TV series?
I guess so - the R5C is Netflix approved.
@@csound55 Excellent.

What f.stop did you use? Everything is in focus
Mostly f2 - when a lens is focused beyond a certain distance everything is in focus. It’s called infinity focus.
@@csound55 Thanks
sounds abt right. i overexpose my R6 by 2 stops too
This looks so good!
Great work. Is that the canon rf f2.0 lens you’re shooting with?
Thanks, I used the Canon 85mm f2 for all the shots from start to 3.04, 48.02 and 1.57. For all the the rest I used Sigma 70 - 200mm f2.8.
Absolutely beautiful colors and editing. What ND filters did you use?
Thanks James. I used a Heliopan variable ND.
Hey bravo for the video, nice colours ! Little question... do you have some issues with the sound since the firmware update ? Like white noise even if there are no microphone linked ? Thanks
Thanks for your comment. I tested and can't hear any white noise if the onboard monaural mic is turned off.

what do you use to capture the ambience sound the naturura audio
I use a Tascam DR100 Mk 2 recorder with a Rode directional microphone.

You make the R5C and Hong Kong sing. How do you power the R5C? Do you think it's possible to use it as a run and gun documentary camera on batteries and use USB-C PD for interviews etc?
Thanks Simon. I use an Anker USB-C PD for interviews but for anything else Canon LP-E6NH batteries seem to work fine - I get 70+ mins recording per battery in 4K oversampled and about 60 mins with 8K raw light.
@@csound55thanks for the info! Will definitely work for me 👍
Clog3?
Actually Clog 1 - shot this footage in 2020 before the R5 had Clog 3 from a firmware update.
