It's blue threaded Rod with a protective threaded cap, i am guessing that the cap is there to protect the rod so that something can be threaded onto it. It's not a belay anchor because it's too far from an edge. I was wondering if it could be something to do with Paragliding to anchor a wind sock or maybe something to do with the water authority with it being Blue in colour. perhaps Geotechnica...

      Ahhh so it was you who i seen in that case Andy because when i got to the carpark after my camp/hike i seen your van in the corner at about 07.30 there was only your van and a red Jaguar. I spotted two tents when i was approaching the Downfall from Mill Hill direction with my binoculars and yesterday i went to find it but this young lad came running up to me and needed a lighter for his stove so i ended up staying at this spot which was spot on flat as they come so i could help the young lad out and the bugger left early and took it with him after me telling him that it was my lightest lighter so it was special to me ( mini Bics are 2 grams lighter than most others 🙄, i might be taking my weight saving far too serious these days 🤣) Thanks very much for watching and commenting Andy ATVB.

      You have to do what you are happy with Andy because even though its highly unlikely that the water is contaminated after filtering its way through the mountain theres all sorts being pumped into the atmosphere and it has to settle somewhere and science goes very convuluted or quite when people search for answers regarding chem trails etc. When i was walking in the Pyrenees i came across the place where they bottle Spains most popular bottled water that sells in the multi millions each week and it was only 3 blokes filling up the bottles with some system thats connected to a stream that runs through the building and other than that they had one forklift truck. Only enough when you go into the nearest village there was a font where you can fill up your own bottles for free with a sign saying "Non potable" That means its not drinkable 🤣 What a business 🤔 I wish i had thought of that

      100% i will never use anything else from now on Chris. I have thought Atom packs were really good quality and apart from a niggle with the hip belt pockets and the unventilated back i thought they were a good fit but this is just over 600 grams without pockets and less than 800 with all the bells and whistles but its next level comfort and i absolutely dont see me ever using anything else for hikes with camps. They look quite flimsy when empty and i was a bit suspect about the durability at first but this one is 2 years old and i am out 3 to 4 times per month and it looks exactly how it did when i first bought it plus Zpacks are an awesome company and i ordered a smaller belt 2 months ago and it arrived the same week 😳

My preferred method of pitching is to thread both the poles and put two of them in the eyelets and then work on the other end, can be a little bit fiddly at first but goes up quickly after bit of practice 😉 Enjoy

    Thank you, Olan. My interest is that I use an EE down quilt and a Thermarest Xtherm. I found that other sleep mats just don’t keep me warm enough. At first I thought it was my quilt but I eventually realised it was my mat. I was also using a Tensor which I reckon was more comfortable but I struggled to be warm. I tried the Thermarest and bingo, I was suddenly cosy. I havd tried talking to Cumulus about their clothing but they won’t do custom sizes - I’m 6’5” and 120kg (ex-infantry). Enjoy your posts. Thank you.

    • @Olan...
      @Olan... Місяць тому

      Thats an interesting comment Chris because i used to have the Old version of the Xtherm which i really liked and never had any issues with apart from it not being the most comfortable and then when they brought the newer version out the NXT Xtherm i had a few issues with deflation and i had a bad run of problems with other mats like the Xlite and the Uberlite from Thermarest so even though they were fantastic with no quibble replacements i lost confidence and went on a mission trying Expeds and Tensors. I mention it in the video about my thoughts on the Tensor EC. It's the EE down quilt mate thats the problem for me it's not the Tensor because there is a huge difference in the EE Down quilt and this synthetic one i use here . I did have an EE Down quilt , it was the Enigma 850 i think it was called which i purchased from Valley and Peak and i found that Toasty but i just didn't get on with using the quilt on its own as my main sleep component because i felt the draft every time i turned over when it was below 3 degrees so i flogged it on eBay. I lam not a fan of synthetic insulation in the sense that i always feel kind of clammy especially when its close to my skin however i do like it when combined with down products when i use it on top of them as a barrier. When did you leave the Infantry ? I guess you must of been in one of the Gaurds Regiments being 6"5 then. I was Royal Artillery but i spent most of my 15 years as an OP directing Artillery , Aircraft and the Navy onto targets and i never had any issues with comfort back then because there was non 🤣😂🤣 Thanks for the comment 👌

      I forgot to mention that Rabs Neutrino Pro down jacket isn't the lightest but fits on the large size, Its a shame that Cumulus dont do custom clothing because the products and customer service are Top Notch . PHD do custom jackets and Sleeping bags but they are very pricey and the jackets i have dont seem that warm and are not my favourite bits of clothing . Theres also a company in Scotland that will add extra fill in jackets and bags and they are fairly reasonable price wise but oi dont think they do alterations in sizes.

      @@chrishamilton2527 Sounds like you had a very interesting time indeed and you were kept on your tip toes a fair bit in those places . I thought of going down that route too because i loved the soldering side of things but i hated BS in camp. and thats why i loved my OP role because we only had 1 Rupert to tolerate and no gobby Sgt Majors 🤣 . I was also a JSRCI so i had lots of lovely Rock Climbing holidays which i could plan myself and go down to the Pay Office and get loads of money to pay for meals etc and as you can image a lot of those meals were in the form of Alcohol it was fun times and we seen a lot of action on the beaches in the South of France but we were in shorts and t shirts and not DPM so non of it made the history books apart from a couple of entries in the local police stations log books. My time was relatively peaceful during the time i was in and i dont regret any of it but my understanding of the world and how it operates is a lot different these days and i wouldn't recommend anyone to join now. The Army was heavily funded in my day compared to what it is now and you felt a sense of belonging and looked after for life but these poor kids that join now are tied up into contracts and just used and exploited . I also find RAB stuff too tight and i dont bother with anything other than the down jackets and down trousers and with these i size up and find them similar to ME fit. I will have a look at that US Company because i have never heard of them before so thanks for that Chris 👍

Surprisingly there was slack in the guylines but I had been pitched for 3 hours and I wasn't expecting them to have slackened off that much but sil nylon does need time to settle and so do guylines, however these guylines that come with the tent are not as good as Lawson so I will be swopping them. Cumulus do some good gear I've got the quilt for 3 season and the mountain equipment helium 600gt best bag I've used the extra room is great.think lowest I can get down to is about 10kg for winter none snow camp.

    • @Olan...
      @Olan... 4 місяці тому

      Thanks very much for the comment and watching Craig. I have had the Helium 600 too and you are right it is an excellent bag with enough room to turn around and i have also got the Firefly which is currently for sale on the bay because i wanted to find something a tad warmer and i just fancied the Cumulus Xlite Custom because i can get the extra shoulder width and choose the colours and fabric plus the fill ratio between the top and base. Personally i dont think too deep into sleeping bag weights for winter because i always have a good base layer set up and full down gear but the number one priority with the bag is that its big enough to get a down jacket and trousers on inside without it feeling like a coffin because you can always up an R rating by big numbers this way rather than laying it over you plus you can stuff the jacket and trousers where you need it and the Panyam is a 65/35 fill which for me gives to the edge over the Helium although everyone uses different types of mats but for my choices this has worked very well. The pack is a good start for dropping a good amount of weight and this Zpack only weighs around 600gms and it's a 70 litre which is mental. When i first bough a Zpack i didn't think they would be robust and comfortable and in all honesty its the most comfortable pack i have work and you can really synch the back so you get max airflow to regulate your body heat and prevent a cold sweaty back. I might make a video and go into more detail soon. ATB

      Hi. Thanks for the comment. No i dont get any cold spots at all and i like everything about it. I have had issues with the Thermarest Xtherm NXT and the Xlite NXT but this Tensor Extreme has been absolutely fine and the bonus is that it packs smaller than the 2 Thermarest mats.

      You're welcome Dave and i hope it serves you well . I am from Manchester so i have my fair share of seeing grey when it's not pissin down with rain so Thermarest would help improve our moods if they used more vibrant colours especially on winter matts when you are stuck inside a tent for hours on end . The Black and Green of the Nemo looks a lot cooler and dare i say a bit more sophisticated IMO. I haven't used any of the STS matts so i have no idea how they perform but thanks for sharing your opinion and keep up the great work with your channel, i prefer to hear the views of people like you who get out there in all conditions and have built up a wealth of experience and knowledge over time rather than someone who spends most of their time behind a lap top watching and listening to everyone else's videos then trims their video reviews accordingly to impress the punters and the suppliers etc ATB

    • @Olan...
      @Olan... 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment Dave, that made me laugh. I always look like a miserable git but inside i am mostly happy and definitely more so when i am out in the Hills and Mountains, its the grounding effect and being exposed to negative and positive ions and being far away from what is rapidly turning into a Zombie Utopia :) In short there is no notable difference , they are as warm as each other. I started using Thermarest when they first came out and i spent 15 years in the Army with the exact same matt and then as the years past i upgraded through the newer models and i owned the older version of the Xtherm without the slightest issue but because of these bastards who make You Tube videos i felt i needed to upgrade to the latest NXT version so i sold my old version on eBay and bought the new one from Face West and thats where things went pear shaped. The first one i bought off Face West didn't stay inflated overnight so i sent it back and i only inflated it and lay it on a bed but they told me it had been used which i wasn't happy about and they said "They will give me the benefit of the doubt" whichi took offence to. The next one they sent out was the same and they told me they had done a test in the office and that it was normal for matts to lose some pressure overnight which i argued against and sent it back. At altitude that can be the case but not at sea level. Anyway i lost faith and bought 2 different Exped models because Jim at Valley and Peak said they were very reliable which worked fine but i found the R7 a bit too bulky and the Tensor is tiny in comparison and equally as comfy . I also had 2 other Thermarest fails last year with the Uberlight which blown its baffles after only 1 camp and the Xlite reflective inner lining thing was displaced in various places inside the matt and i could see daylight through it and i didn't get that much use out of it before that started happening . Thermarrest/Cascade changed both with no quibbles what soever but i am a busy man and i dont want to be messing about and waiting for things to be replaced etc and i totally lost faith ninth Thermarest quality. You can say i have been unlucky because i have a mate who has the exact same models as i mentioned and he hasn't had a single issue with any of them but i can only go off my own experiences and i haven't exactly been using them as bouncy castes :)

I am going to wait until next winter before buying one as i have only had the Nammatj for 1 month which i do really like but seeing it next to the Storm star is a little bit disappointing . @@Olan... That's high praise indeed for the Kuiu from someone who's used as many Hilleberg's. It's a shame all Hilleberg owners aren't as open and honest as yourself. I had some grief for daring to compare my Storm Star to a Soulo, I had to block a few people online. I don't mind Hille tents, but some of the owners are far too protective of the brand, to the point where they get really angry and quite insulting towards non-Hille owners. FFS they're only tents lol. I'm surprised you said that about your Jannu, Tom Heaney Adventures on YT has had his out in all weathers, pushed to the max, it looks like it'll take a right hammering, but yeah, I'd love to have seen a Storm Star pitched next to it.

      Well some people just cannot handle Empirical evidence can they. Its a bit like when you have years of experience and you know something that someone with a degree in a certain subject doesn't know but they will get upset and agitated because they have spent a lot of money or gotten themselves into debt for a certificate that isn't worth the paper its written on. Some people still want to believe that Gortex is the benchmark for a good breathable waterproof even when they get piss wet through .I could say the same for Merino wool base layers which i dont like one bit... Horses for courses hey :) . If i had a choice of tents for an exposed summit camp then it would be the Storm Star , below the treeline there are lots of lighter options that will do the job well@@donnavansenior

    I know the maximum is 95cm, but the minimum width? That is, at its widest part it is 95cm, but the sides are narrower.

    I forgot to mention that the pump sack is really good too. It only takes 5 sackfulls of air to fully inflate. The only minor negative for me personally is that the pump sack doesn't double as a stuff sack like the Expeds and the Thermarest. Exped pump sacks are the best because they have a double use and do both function of inflating and storing very satisfactory so no need to carry a pump.

      I am very impressed with it and its become my favourite tent . Its not going to compete with a Soulo on a summit camp in heavy winds but considering how much lighter and roomier it is and how well it manages the condensation plus it packs down super small i think it will handle the UK winter very well. Thanks for watching Alex and ATB

    The Sleeping mat I use in this video is an Exped synmat S5 size Regular Wide but I have other mats that are size Large wide that fit quite snug inside this tent too. I haven't gone into technical detail here because its best to familiarise yourself on the manufacturers website as tents and mats are expensive items to purchase and I don't want to run the risk of not touching all bases because after all we are all different sizes and what works for me doesn't work for everyone.Hapoy camping 😉
