Hi What is the income for a journeyman in Ontario ? Thanks
I cannot say.. each province electrician payrate for electricians is so different in Canada. Best option is to call and ask.. or inquire in your interview! becoming-an-electrician.com/
Where did you get those strong wires?
"Blue", colors dont mean anything in residential when youre working with mulitple gc's on different projects, just dont use white/grey/green for your Lines
This video is intended for commercial electricians working with 3-Phase panels, where there will be three different colors. Depending on region, colors may differ, but the concept of A, B, C should have been the takeaway. becoming-an-electrician.com/
Thanks for the video. In a single phase panel, for example in a condo suite, breaker one would be "A 1-2" and breaker two would be "B 3-4". Would you label the third breaker "C 5-6"? I asked this as "C 5-6" would typically be what you would label the third breaker in a three phase panel. So, what would I label the third breaker in a single phase panel? I hope this makes sense
Yes it makes sense. It would go A 5-6. So: A 1-2 B 3-4 A 5-6 A three phase panel has A-B-C. But the actual condo suites have a single phase panel, from a three phase panel. So they only have two hot conductors and a common (neutral) white wire. Because of this, that suite will actually have 208V between two hots, and 120V to Neutral. In a typical house, because of how the power comes from the transformer (I think called a High-Delta Leg), you get 240V between the two hots and 120V to Neutral. Each house creates their own neutral (ground plate / ground rod into the actual earth outside the home). Here's the Wikipedia article on High-Delta Leg: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-leg_delta You can stay updated with becoming-an-electrician.com by signing-up for the email list by getting my free apprentice electrician book: becoming-an-electrician.com/optin/5-tips-apprentice-electrician-book/
@BecomingAnElectrician thank you very much
You're welcome! Good question! Please feel free to leave comments on becoming-an-electrician.com any time! 🙂
Thank you for this video, It helps me a lot to understand the system. I don’t have any experience or education, but somehow I have been working as an electrician since September. Yesterday I called Ace trade school to register for Level 1 apprentice, and they told me I need to work 1600 hours under a skilled trade in BC before I can take the class. Do I need to work 1600 hours first to take the Level 1 class? you said you worked 9 months before level 1 class, now I am little bit confused.
I don't think that is true. I don't think you need the hours before you do the school. The conditions to pass that level & get your pay raise is to have BOTH the hours for the level & pass the schooling level.👍 Reach out to your local electrical college about your area's specific requirements.. as each region can be a little different! What is true is that you do need to be registered as an apprentice electrician! Then your company submits your hours on your behalf. There should be a website you log into to see your progress!
Hey there, which box would be the best for fire alarms, specifically the simplex 4903, I bought one, but the speaker does not fit in. Thanks -siren and fire alarm enthusiast here
I'm just guessing from the pictures I saw online.. It looks like a single gang box would do? I couldn't find direct information, and didn't look too deep into it, sorry.. I also saw one picture that included it's own box you'd install in rough-in? What kind of electrical box did you purchase already? And what kind of situation are you in? becoming-an-electrician.com/
Generally, "marette" is a canadian term
Marrette is the name of the product, just like how "Kleenex" is often used instead of tissue. The actual term is "wire nut" or "wire connector" ! becoming-an-electrician.com/
My dad connect wires
🙂
Why cant I find a video to wire nut 4 12ga solid wires? 14ga is easy.
I can create a video on this once I get back to updating the website. The answer is just strip the 12 AWG solid wires longer before you try splicing them! If you are just a DIY, your hand strength is not that of an electrician who splices wires often each day, so stripping the wires longer than normal will help when splicing larger sized conductors together 👍 becoming-an-electrician.com/
great video, thanks for all the information
Hi! Viewer from Europe here! How do we choose the right boxes for concrete walls? I mistakenly bought a dry lining box and came to understand its the wrong one. Thanks!
Hey! If you are an electrician, your code book should have a section in the back tables sharing that kind of boxes are allowed. If it doesn't show there, then if you go onto the electrical box company's website, they will have a section for different types of boxes. If you are unsure, look at the SPECIFICATION SHEET, which will tell you what the equipment is usable for. If you're just a do-it-yourself, then ask your local hardware store about the task you're trying to accomplish.. they should guide you through what hardware & equipment you'll need! becoming-an-electrician.com/
We always strip 2 wire nmd by inserting blade in the center, slightly angling the blade towards the ground as you run it down the wire. I totally understand why someone would not approve lol but that's how the majority do it.
That's how some do it, but there's high-risk of stripping the conductor accidentally. You can also gouge the bond wire accidentally, too. Over the years, the way I've shown will allow your conductors to be unharmed from beginning to end. There is no right or wrong, but when you experience a mistake in a situation that is hard to fix, you will realize it's not worth the high-risk. becoming-an-electrician.com/how-to-strip-nmd90-wire-jacket/
Damn alot of work
Take it one step at a time! Reach out to your local college for how to get started, they should walk you in slowly of how it all works for how to become an electrician. becoming-an-electrician.com/
where did you get this type of gang box?
Depending where you live, electrical companies offer different variations of electrical boxes. This was from Home Depot in Canada. It is a by Thomas & Betts. But what measurement defines too close?
Defines too close for what? How close to staple? How close to label the wire? Please describe further!
@@BecomingAnElectrician apologies, it was during the time when you were talking about hammering in the metal plate to protect the wire if the wire is too close to the edge of the stud
@@Anonsbdofjrnwodb Oh okay thanks for clarifying! There is a code rule I think on this, but I don't know the exact number. As you start to become an electrician, just remember it's all about protecting the wire.. so if it feels too close to the edge of the stud, then I'd suggest putting a metal protection plate there. Another thing to think about is how long are typical screws going into the stud? I think drywallers use 1 1/4" on their first sheet, then longer screws on double-drywalled walls (such as party walls or ceilings where a dwelling is above). I’m a biomedical engineer, why do I need to know about that?!😩
These are the basics of electrical theory. becoming-an-electrician.com/what-is-an-electrical-load/
In my class the teacher has given us very few known values to get clues from. Only one known resistor value is pretty common on the diagrams we're given. Alot of what I see on youtube and google they have alot of resistor values to work with already. So my question is how can you break things down with almost no know values including only one, maybe two known resistor values?
Typically you have to know at least two values to begin an equation. That would also be like in real life. If you put a electrical meter on equipment, it would show you Voltage, and your meter may also be able to show you amps, too. If it's a purely resistive load, like a baseboard heater, on the box or specification sheet, it will show you the resistance, so you would be able to figure out your voltage (120V in a typical home), with the resistance to get your amps, then your watts. becoming-an-electrician.com/

Thanks for the video! But my question is how warm do they help keep your feet?? I know you said they’re great at keeping your feet dry, but you didn’t speak any on the extra warmth if they did help any with that?? Thanks
Yeah they are essentially like an extra sock over your foot for extra warmth & insulation from the outside elements. The bonus is that they are absorbent to keep your actual foot less wet, so break times when you sit your feet can often get cold because of dampness and not moving! When your feet are less wet, it is easier to get back up and going to a better warmth. Further, they were quite comfy over time as it protects your feet from rigid boots 👍 becoming-an-electrician.com/

Can you give tips on how to find an employer/ sponsor for a highschool student I just started grade 12 and I would like to be an apprentice after I am done with highschool
I'd say first see if your school has a program to get you started doing your apprenticeship during school. That will save you a year, and get you ahead faster. If they don't offer that, maybe look for a high school that does. If not, then I would say in your last couple months of high school you can start reaching out to electrical employers with a resume telling them you're eager to start learning the trade! becoming-an-electrician.com/
If you filed a flat on the shank of the green screwdriver, it wouldn't rotate. Otherwise use it on a square shank driver.

What's more concerning is if you score the wire, such as if you use too small of a wire stripping gauge. If you really wanted, you could try taping the plier grips, or just use them for other tasks to dull the grips a little bit. becoming-an-electrician.com/
I have another question, whenever I use a wire stripper on a, let's say a no.14 AWG wire and use the same measurement on the wire stripper, it always leaves a small "cut" at the point where the insulation and copper wire is stripped, my current workplace is kinda strict on this kind of things as they demand that all electrical splices should have very few/no marks at all.
@@JamesB-oh6py It sounds like you are using the wrong size hole when stripping (make sure you're using solid for solid, and stranded for stranded). If you are using the right size, maybe try not squeezing as hard. You can always pull the insulation off with pliers too if you're very concerned. If you do make score marks, it is bad, and significantly weakens the copper electrical wire! becoming-an-electrician.com/
That is a f¥kg great question. I do other wiring work, and those that have that happen, never think about how it can happen, until "we remind them!" Good job!!!
Hey bro I am also in Canada, wanna know how to get apprenticeship job like you, you got insta account, I have some questions
Hey, if you have questions, you can leave them on my blog and I'll answer you!: becoming-an-electrician.com/how-to-become-an-apprentice-electrician/
Is there any advantage to wrap the wires below the edge if the wire cap with electrical tape and extending that on the exterior of the cap to ensure the wire cap doesn’t slip off over time?
If you have a good splice, with no copper exposed, tape is not needed. Using tape is not bad, and it does improve the secureness of the splice. For example, let's say the splice would be near a vibrating machine, you may want to tape CLOCKWISE so the splice remains tight due to vibrations. In normal situations, taping is not required. becoming-an-electrician.com/

Hey I was wondering how the schooling process works, I have managed to find a job with an electrical company, and they are saying they will take me on as an apprentice. Once they register me as an apprentice, where do I go from there in regard to the schooling? Do I have to apply to a school or is that something that my sponsor will advise me on?
In this case, it sounds like you will first start working! Then after about 9 months, you will book your schooling, which lasts about 3 months (9~ weeks), then you go back to work for another year, then back to school. It's nice to time school around winter time! You can read some more on my blog post: becoming-an-electrician.com/how-to-become-an-apprentice-electrician/
Hey so I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me! I’m living in Ontario and I just finished my electrical program at the college I know that previously it would exempt you from level one and start at 2 I’m not sure if that’s still like that since there will be some changes. Another thing is say I got a job with someone who isn’t union and I’m collecting my hours once I get my hours do I get contacted to come to school for each level or how would that work ?
Hey, what are the new changes happening about schooling? That's twice today I've been notified about that! During my years, pre-apprenticeship gave you 1st year & some hours. (Sometimes they'd help you find work, too!) I don't think it matters if you're union or non-union, your hours will apply to your apprenticeship. Usually you work about 9 months, then go to school for about 3 months (~10 weeks). It's best to time it to go to school in the winter so it's warm 🥶 Please leave a comment on this page here, you can also read other's questions, too!: becoming-an-electrician.com/how-to-become-an-apprentice-electrician/
@@BecomingAnElectrician hey so as of what I know something along the changes being on September 1 for skilled trades Ontario there changing the curriculum and adding an extra level it’s on there website for the new agreement
@@motivationalquotes3984 Hey, here's the update I found: www.skilledtradesontario.ca/wp-content/uploads/1970/01/Notice-of-change-Electrical-Trades-309A-309C-442A-Curr-Dec-20th-2023-English.pdf It looks like an updated curriculum, and only at level 4 it differentiates for Industrial to Construction Electrician (Residential / Commercial). I'm not sure how this effects previous years of schooling, the .pdf is pretty in-depth
