Trying to farm on a small scale with antique equipment. I'm mainly an Allis Chalmers fan but when you're working with what is available you can't always be picky. I do some machining and fabricating too, and just some general wrench turning as well. Hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching!
Meet My New (to me) Gleaner E Combine!
Well, I bought something...this is a 1967 Gleaner E combine. It came with a 2 row corn head, which I have to go back to get once the snow melts off. She needs some work but overall it's in really nice shape. I think it will make a nice replacement for the New Idea picker if I can ever get that sold. Thanks for watching!!!

New Idea Picker/Sheller Needs a Good Home
Переглядів 634День тому
Today I'm showing my New Idea 324 two row wide picker with a 314 sheller unit that I'm putting up for sale. It's a good running machine, last used in 2022, and has been kept in the shed until pulling it out to sell. I replaced the grain pan when I got it. It shelled 200bu/acre corn behind my WD45 and did well. I'm asking $1700 to start, but I'm open to offers. If you're interested, let me know!...

I started this video back before the boiler pipe project became a thing, so a bit of time has elapsed since the beginning. The governor in this engine hasn't been acting right, and it finally got to where it was either idling or revving to the moon. Let's see if it's fixable. Thanks for watching!!!

Adjusting the Governor on the Mighty WD45
Переглядів 1242 місяці тому
I'm not sure exactly why, but since I got the engine running in the WD45 again, the throttle hasn't been responding correctly and the engine has been revving way too high at wide open throttle. I did manage to fix it, but not the way that I thought it would get fixed. The only thing that I know is different from before tearing the engine down is that the oil passage in the governor cover was to...

Allis Chalmers All Crop Combines: What to Look For
Congratulations. Great machine. Dad had one just like it, purchased brand new. Replaced by the EIII for only one year, which then became the K, so the last E was really the second series. There were lots of little changes between what you've got and the earlier E.
Thank you, Sir! I've been looking through the parts manual and seeing some of the differences. I'm excited to start working on it, if it ever warms up! Thank you for watching! I hope you have a good one
Very nice, I knew Nelson would love it. He has a set of them. Great find. Hope the repairs go well.
Thank you, Steve! I'm excited to start working on it if it ever warms up! I hope you have a good week, Sir!
Lookin forward to your wrestling match with the old Gleaner
It needs some work, but hopefully it won't be too bad. Hope you have a good one!
We had 3 neighbors ran them old Gleaners. Never heard a complaint about them. Except the neighbors that didn't have one, saying " those are so cheap they don't even paint them"!. Lol. But I guess farmers need something to complain about.😂😂
My grandpa ran Gleaners, he always liked them. I can’t remember if he ever had an E though. Thanks for watching, friend! Hope you have a good one!
"Yeaaah!" haha, i was right there. She's a beauty! Looks like it was kept under cover a lot. Amazing how all that went back into the barn, nice job!
Thanks Rusty!!! I was really glad that the Oliver started that well! I think the gleaner has spent most of its life inside. It definitely needs some work but I think it’s really solid. Hope you have a good week Rusty!!!
Man yeah, can't wait to see more on this one Evan!! You figured out a gleaner of that era's best friend...a remote starter!! Also a food cheap investment is an electric fuel pump. I can tell a huge difference between Glenda and cousin Scott's K in starting. Gives those governor controlled carbs a boost. I absolutely love it, looks identical to Glenda just a touch smaller. What is the lever in front of the dash? The cold starts are amazing, I miss the gas engines in colder temps!! Backed that thing right off like a boss from the trailer 🤣🤣🤣🤔🤔 Looking fwd to seeing that clutch repair with your machining skills!! I someone else that's probably smiling😉😉🙏🏻 I have to pick at you, in the beginning did I hear you say the wife was out of town....while you film a new to you combine on the trailer 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you Evan for bringing us along, look fwd to seeing what's next my friend!! Hope you have a great week, the boys sure are growing!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🌽🌽
Thanks Nelson! I'm really excited about it! I really wasn't looking for one until you put your video up of bringing home Scott's combine. I looked on craigs list just for the heck of it and there it was, and for the price I thought I'd be a fool to pass it up. It actually has an electric pump on it already. The extra handle I'm not sure about yet. It does have a single hydraulic line on the left side of the feeder house, I don't know if it would have been for variable reel speed or reel height? Since I don't have the grain head I may never know. I was nervous as heck backing down off the trailer! I just made sure the wheels were straight, said a prayer and went for it LOL! The wife was aware that I was going to buy it, but the timing was hilarious to go buy stuff when she wasn't home 🤣🤣 I wanted to try to video the road trip a little but I had the boys with me but with the 3 of us and all their "stuff" in that regular cab, it just wasn't happening. They had fun though, and Sam the older one is really excited about the Gleaner. I wasn't going to name her but she came with a name, I'll tell what it is in the next video. I hope my grandpa is smiling, too, he was always a Gleaner man. Thanks for always watching and especially for encouraging, Nelson! Looking forward to seeing what you're doing next too! Hope you have a great week!
@evanaustin2636 That's awesome!! Can't wait to hear it!! Yes that line is for reel height, I'm pretty sure. Glenada has that. I can't wait to see what that handle does. I could t see, maybe it only has one horizontal handle where Glenda has 2. Doesn't matter I am so excited for you and the kiddos!! 😁😁
@ This one only has the one horizontal handle. The extra handle on the front isn't shown in any of the manuals, so I guess somebody has added it from a newer combine. Maybe it's in there somewhere and I just haven't found it yet? Thanks again, Nelson!
@evanaustin2636 I bet it's for header height and reel. Makes sense now, thank you sir!!! 😁😁
Good morning Evan ☕☕☕ Monday? That's tomorrow.. Wife out of town, sounds like a good time, especially if she took the kids with her 🤔😂 fend for yourself.. Good looking machine! Our first combine was an open station Cii round back. Dad ran it 2 years and bought a cab for it. No AC, just a blower.. sweat your arse off, but so much nicer not eating all the dust.. upgraded to an M with cab and AC about 5 years later.. then we went BTO.. JD 7700.. it was in great shape, wasn't used in 1980 when Mt St Helens blew.. the old M ate a lot of ash, you could literally see light through it, dang ash really wore it out in a hurry!! Later, upgraded to the IH 1480.. haven't used it in a few years, lost so much ground to strip malls and houses, UHG 🙄🤬 Dang kids and keys.. Waited too long from the first snort to the cranking.. no choke doesn't help either.. at least you got her running! Have a good one Evan!!
I filmed all this last week, it takes me a while to get a video together these days. She was traveling for work so I still had the boys. Tried to get all this done while they were at school but it didn’t work out. They went with me to go pick it up, the cab was pretty full! Thanks for watching, Ed!!! Hope you have a good one
Good looking machine Evan. Don't sell the 200 MPH tape short, that's stuff's your best friend on an old combine! Did you get a grain head with it too? Love the cold start action, very similar to how it would go here. Of course, I'd have to buy a 770 to compare to that segment. Your boys are getting a great upbringing around the old machinery.
Thanks Mike! My all crop has some tape on it too, it's definitely a life saver when you're in the field. I'm finally figuring out how to start the Allis when it's cold, I don't use it enough in the winter to remember how it wants to start. It will fire right away without any choke but it needs it to keep running. The Oliver wants choke all the time. I did not get a grain head, I found one online in Illinois, but I really need to get the picker sold before I spend more money. Sam is really excited about the Gleaner. He also wants to make sure I'm keeping the All Crop too, hopefully I can keep them both but we will see. Hope you have a good Sunday, Mike!
@@evanaustin2636 I think the Allis 125's and related engines may be the easiest starting engines of all time, even on 6 volts. 201/226's can be good too but the one in my NFE 45 is cantankerous. The electronic ignition parts got here this week, still need the bushing kit for the distributor. For diesels, a 400 series IH is hard to beat for cold starting.
@ I'm looking forward to seeing the conversion on yours! I hope it works out well. If there was a way to retrofit a GM HEI distributor onto these things I'd be all over it, those things just won't quit! But they're so damn big!!!
That's a clean old machine.
Thanks. It's a really good machine, it just isn't convenient for opening fields up. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a good one!
@evanaustin2636 I just saw you're from central Indiana in a comment. Born and raised in central Illinois. Left there 10 years ago.lol
Good looking picker Evan, you shouldn't have any trouble selling that. There is a New Idea 2 row like that about 1/4 mile from my house, in a shed even!
Thanks Mike. I hope it sells without too much headache. The picker was local, only about 10 miles away from here when I bought it. It's still the only picker/sheller I've seen in person. Hope you have a good week, Mike!
Man yeah Evan, you know me...eyes right on the gleaner 😉😁 Looks very similar to Glenada with the fiberglass cab, can't wait to see more!! That is a very nice picker!! I have several customers that would love to have cob corn. I may one day dabble down that road. Looking fwd to hearing how the sale goes and good luck!! Man it sure looks snowy there ❄️❄️🥶🥶😁😁 Thank you my friend for bringing us along!! Hope have a great week!! 😁😁🌽🌽🌽👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks Nelson! Yeah, it was cold yesterday, it was breezy and never made it above 18. Was 8 outside this morning. Pickers are still pretty easy to find up here with a husking bed on them. This is the only one I've ever seen in person that had a sheller. And it was only 10 miles from here when I bought it. Be safe out there Nelson, I hope you have a good one!
@@evanaustin2636 I should pay attention more to the obvious 🤦🏼🤦🏼🤣🤣🤣🤣 Bless me at times 🤦🏼
I wonder how much it would cost to haul over here, haha. I'd love to go to the show this summer. Looking forward to seeing a closer look at that Gleaner!
It would be quite a haul to get it across the Rockies LOL. I'm hoping to go this year, I haven't been to Rantoul yet. We'll definitely see a lot more of the Gleaner, she needs some work. Hope you have a good one, Rusty!
Trading up 🙂👍
I hope so...the picker was ready to run, the gleaner needs some work...Hope you have a good one, Jack!
Would be a nice machine, id like to get into cob corn in the next few years. Where are you located?
I'm in central Indiana. Bit of a drive from where you're at. Thanks for watching!
@evanaustin2636 dang, would sure be nice to have but a quick check on marketplace and there's a few in the area.
@ Yeah, they are awkward to transport, and at least with a husking bed they are still fairly easy to find
Nice machine.. good reason to sell it!! Hopefully someone will need it and take it off your hands. Have a good one Evan!!
Thank you, Ed! It is a nice picker, hopefully it can find a good home. Thanks for watching, Sir!
That is amazing. I hope they follow through with that, and it will be closer to me, so I hope I get to see it. Love the jail break! Thank you for sharing. Love it
It is really really cool. I hope they get if moved too, and in a way I'm glad it will be in a new place so that a different audience can enjoy it. I will miss it being close, it was only about 2 hours away. I hope you can get to see it when it is back together. Thanks for watching, Steve!
Love the clock. Can you get one in an Interapid? Pretty cool display, the time and effort people put into these things is amazing! They must not have a fleet of antique tractors. They have a huge display like this at the Clay County fairgrounds in Iowa. Saw it at the Red Power Roundup in June. Probably not as big/extensive as this though. There are pictures on the Red Power site. Oh, almost forgot, I have 2 of my Dad's trains yet. One worked when I was young, about 50 years ago. Might still?
Thanks, Mike. My brother gave me the clock for my birthday, I thought it was pretty cool. Not sure if they make an Interapid version LOL. My dad has an HO scale layout in his basement, the boys really like running the trains at his house. I'll have to see if I can find those pictures on Red Power. Hope you have a good one, Mike!
Wow! What an amazing place! Thanks for posting this, very cool!
Thanks Rusty! It is very, very impressive. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching, friend!
Awesome!! Thank you Evan! To bad they're closed
Thanks Ed! Hopefully they can get it moved and set up again ok so that more people can see and enjoy it. Thanks for watching, friend, hope you have a good weekend
Man yeah Evan, soumds great!! What are you sayimg noisier than you like? Just curious, good motors they are, good friend had one in a cub cadet. Hope y'all had a great Christmas and upcoming New Year!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks Nelson! It seems to have sort of a rattle to it, but it always has so it probably isn't a big deal. Thanks for watching, Nelson! Hope you had a merry Christmas too!
Sounds good Evan, just like my Red Cubs. Happy new year!
I've been really impressed with that engine over the last 10 years. I never liked Kohlers but it has been a good one. Happy new year to you too Mike!
Oh ya, should be good for another 20 years of mowing! Have a good one Evan!
I hope so! Thanks for watching, Rusty! I hope you have a good one too!
Good to hear it making some noise. A little more than I expected.. but. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas! Have a Happy New Year!! Thank you Evan!
Thanks Ed! It's always been noisier than I would like, but it keeps on going. I had thin oil in it too to get it primed quickly, it might sound better with some good 30w in it. Or it might not. Hope you have a good one, Ed!
Man yeah, that is an amazing example of how to do that!! I had an older gentleman do a serious SBC heads back in the day, I thought there is no way this will work...used them for many years with zero issues!! I love watching how y'all set things up in the lathe and make it work!! Just amazing to me!! Great job Evan, looking fwd to seeing this unit back in action!! Inl hope you have a great week my friend!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks Nelson! It's not the most elegant but it works. Those older guys could work miracles with engines. Thanks for watching, Nelson! Hope you have a good one!
Very interesting , thanks for taking the time to show that.
Thanks Rusty! Hopefully next winter I can do this to the Oliver engine. Hope you have a good week!
Great tutorial Evan. l
Thanks, Mike!
Ground smooth and true, by machine or by hand...all the same. Should be just fine! Thank you Evan.
It's all worth it when they run and work again. Thanks for watching, Ed!
Good evening Evan
Sorry Ed, I loaded this one as I was going to bed again.
e
Evan i have tons and tons of meteral
Thanks Dan! I was going to call you if I didn't find anything close enough. Stay warm!
You always amaze me Evan, the shear knowledge of all that machining!! I am going to ask the dumbest question ever... how does turning square or rectangle work? I just can't get it through my head 🤔🤦🏼🤦🏼🤣🤣🤣 Leave it to me to ask the silly questions, I mean, I saw it here... but just isn't making sense. Best to leave the machining to you guys that know your stuff!! Did you give the lathe a spin there when you started it? The repair looks amazing, could watch this all day!! Man I wish you were closer 😁😁 Thank you sir for bringing us along!! 👌🏻👌🏻😁😁🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks, Nelson! It's not a dumb question. I guess the best way I can explain it is that the metal doesn't really care what shape it is, so making a round piece out of a square is just cutting the corners down until what is left is round. I do have to spin the lathe to start it. The motor is going bad and it won't start itself anymore, it just hums unless you give it a spin before you turn the switch on. It's been that way for years, I just keep using it that way. I need to fix it one of these days. Thanks always for the kind words and the encouragement, Nelson! I hope you have a good week, friend!
@evanaustin2636 Thank you for thr explanation!!! I understand on the lathe, it's tired like us 😁😁
Very nice! you do a fantastic job fixing things.
Thanks, Mike! As long as it will hold together, then I'm happy! Hope you have a good week!
Kinda the hard way, but use what you have 👍😎 Have a good one Evan!
Thanks, Ed! Not ideal, but it works well enough. Hope you have a good one as well!
Another fine repair! I usually have to go somewhere and look in someone else's junk stock lol.
Thanks, Rusty! I stocked up on steel a few years ago, the scrap yard that I bought steel from was going out of business so I went and bought about 600 lbs of random sized scrap pieces, LOL. Still don't always have what I need though🙄🙄
If you decide to sell it let me know
Let's make sure it actually runs again...
Interesting repair Evan. Think I've got 4 of those engines around here in various Cub Cadets. I do not have the Bridgeport however.
Thanks, Mike. I think the root of this problem was overheating. I had cooling fins get plugged up a couple years ago and it got pretty hot, it's acted weird ever since. It started this season running ok enough but it got to where I can't control it anymore. Overall it's been a good engine. I'm a Briggs guy but I was very impressed with this one. I wondered if any of your Cubs had this engine. Hope you have a good one, Mike!
@@evanaustin2636 They made those engines in three series. First ones had oiling issues. The series two were pretty good, that's what all of mine are. The third series added a filter, better yet. Those DA mowers seem like pretty good machines. I'd have a hard time sending a good one down the road.
@@MikeJensen-wo7oh My dad worked in a mower shop when the first series KT17's were out. He said they had a pile of them, all with broken connecting rods. You're right, the series 2's are pretty good engines. I don't really want to sell it, but the boss doesn't want a bunch of mowers around for some reason. If I hide it in the shed well enough maybe she won't know it's still here...
Man yeah Evan, you sure are sharp as a tack at these repairs!!! Thats a sweet mower, reminds me of one a friend's dad had years ago. Don't remember the brand but look exactly like this one but yellow!! I know the feeling on the record button 🫣 Looking fwd to seeing the valve work with Dad's seat grinder if you captured it!! I love all the cool tools you have to use!!! Thank you my friend for bringing us along!! I must have missed thr first one🤔 Have a great week my friend!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks, Nelson! I don't know about sharp, even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes! I love those garden tractors, this is identical to a Simplicity 7117. Hopefully I can get to doing the valves this weekend. I guess the good news is that there are 2 cylinders so I have 2 chances to press the record button 🙄🙄 I don't think you missed any, this is the first video of this particular disaster. Thanks for watching and all the support, Nelson! Hope you have a great week as well!
Interesting. I've never seen the inside of one of those. I was wondering how far you were having to go to get to the governor gear.
I've only done it one other time, probably 20 years ago. I had trouble getting the crankcase halves separated this time because I missed a bolt. There aren't any gaskets between the halves, either, you use anaerobic gasket sealer on them. I'm hoping this takes care of the problem, the engine is a little tired but it's always ran really well. Thank you for watching, Rusty! I hope you have a good one!
I hate when you push the button and it doesn't record!! Looks like it should fix it! Thank you Evan! Have a good one!
I could have sworn that I pushed it, either I didn't hit it right or I just had a brain fart and forgot. Oh well. Not the first time I've screwed up, and it won't be the last time either! Hope you have a good one, Ed!
Evening Evan
Howdy, Ed. Actually working on your video right now
@evanaustin2636 perfect 👍
Man yeah Evan, good to see you got the burner back going!! I bet that is a satisfying feeling!! Hopefully that pipe will last for many years!! Y'all have snow yet? Thank you for bringing us along!! Look fwd to seeing whats next!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🪵🪵🪵🪵
Thanks Nelson! I'm not sure that it's satisfying, so much, as it is a huge relief that the pipe was actually the problem. I've been worried all this time that I missed something and that it would still leak, but thank goodness it's fixed! We did get maybe 2 or 3 inches of snow today. It's supposed to be in the 40's tomorrow and 50's by Sunday so it won't last long. Our winters aren't too harsh compared to what they get farther North. Thanks for watching, Nelson! I hope you have a good one!
@evanaustin2636 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻❄️❄️
Good to see you got it working Evan. And just in time!
Thanks Mike! Just in time is right!
Good to see it working!! Have a good one Evan!!
Thanks Ed! It feels good to have that finished! Hope you have a good one!
Bet that's a good feeling! Man,, that is a nice sized firebox! It's been snowing here some.
Evening Rusty. Did you get any of the wind today?? It sure did a lot of damage along the coast and West side of Washington.
Yes it is! I've been worried since I started working on it that I was fixing the wrong thing. So I'm VERY relieved that it's fixed! I woke up to a dusting of snow outside this morning. The ground is still pretty warm here so it won't last long. Hope you have a good one, Rusty!
@@GosselinFarmsEdGosselin Hi Ed, not much here, it was just breezy, i heard there was lots of damage, 80 mph winds, sheesh!
Man, that stinks. I'm sorry your having to deal with that. I've never used that type of system, I was thinking maybe hooking up a smoke machine, but with the pipe full of insulation, I don't think it would have worked. God bless you and I hope it goes better for you
Smoke may have worked on the old pipe, it isn't filled solid like the new one is. It just has a couple layers of bubble wrap around the pex pipes. The house was empty for 2 winters before we bought it, and the whole boiler system froze. It didn't hurt the boiler itself but I had to replace a bunch of parts to get it going and I've been waiting for the lines to go the whole time we've been using it. Hopefully the new ones will outlast my desire to cut wood, LOL. Thank you for watching, Steve! I hope you have a great week!
Wow, that didn't look fun at all!! Photo bombed by the cat 🤣🤣🤣 That is like Jack for sure!! Nothing wrong with having friends with cool toys😉😉 I bet that was a ride when it caught the roots. We have a vermeer at work, doesn't get used much but we always put the new guys on it when we do 🤣🤣🤣😉😉 The look on their face is epic when a good root or rock gets caught 😂😂😂🤣🤣 Hopefully you won't have anymore issues, at least if there is a positive.. it wasn't hard winter and snow yet 😳😳 Hopefully the connections go well, and that is pretty slick the test port you built😉 Thank you Evan for bringing us along, hope you have a great week 😁😁👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks, Nelson! Yeah, I didn't really know what I was doing and then hitting that stupid root right off the bat was not a great start, LOL! Those darn cats...you need some cats? I'll ship you some...Jack needs some friends 🤣🤣 The weather has been really mild so far, I can't complain at all about that. And we did get some rain last week so that softened things up for digging 👍👍I'm hoping to get it finished up this weekend. Thanks again, Nelson! I hope you have a great week too!
@evanaustin2636 😁😁😁😉👌🏻👌🏻
Wow, that's quite a job! I used to have a water line from the house to my barn. That is until the gophers chewed a hole in it. Being PVC, i had no way of finding the leak, and being 4 feet down, i ended up loosing my water to the barn. A project i still haven't done for 12 years now.
That stinks. Not much you can do with that, "easier" to just run a new line. But definitely not easy. I'm glad this didn't have to be that deep. Hopefully I can get it finished up next weekend. Hope you have a good week, Rusty!
Well that doesn't look like much fun. Kids looked like they were having a good time though, cats too. I moved a bunch of stuff around Sunday, maybe shoot part four of the equipment tour soon.
It wasn't a great time. The boys sure loved the dirt though. Especially on Sunday after it rained Saturday night. They are very drawn to mud. Will be looking forward to part 4! Thanks for watching, Mike! Hope you have a good one
Never breaks at the “right” time 😉😉😂. I feel your pain. I have a sewer line that needs redone…
Ain't that the truth! Ugh, I think yours sounds worse than mine. Hope it isn't too horrible to get done
Fun job... Lol. At least you got it done before the ground froze and the snow flies!! It's a little more money, but for something like that, I'd sure consider putting a plastic pipe in the ground, big enough to pull the hose through.. just in case there's a next time... Always good to have friends with equipment!!! Have a good one Evan!!
Thanks, Ed. Yeah, the conditions could have been a lot worse. And we had a good rain last week so that made the digging a lot easier. I'm not sure if you buried a bigger pipe if you would be able to pull this stuff through it. It doesn't flex very well. That's why I ended up hacking out the sheet metal on the back of the boiler, it wouldn't flex enough to line up and go through the hole underneath. Hopefully this will outlast my desire to cut wood... Thanks for watching, Ed! Hope you have a good one
@evanaustin2636 big electric cable is pretty stiff too.. lol When you get tired of cutting wood, is when you convert it to a diesel/oil boiler.. still need the hose.. Just a thought 🤔
