Expert AI Researcher Reacts to o1 and Shares What's Next in Reasoning and Post-Training
Douwe’s contributions to AI are truly a part of its bedrock foundations. He wrote the first paper on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and has raised over $100 million to help enterprises build contextual language models that fit their use cases. Before Contextual he was the head of research at Hugging Face, worked on the Facebook AI research team (i.e. Llama) and remains a professor at Stanford. Douwe was incredibly open about his take on AI’s recent history and where he thinks it’s going.

    35:00 It sucks that researchers often let ego shape how they frame their conclusions. Synthetic data can be effective up to a certain threshold or boundary. While it isn’t a standalone solution for high-quality data provenance and model improvements, I personally believe there’s still considerable leeway before synthetically generated data becomes ineffective or hits that limit,

    Contrary to the centralization of power; AI will decentralize the power into the hands of the masses. A decade ago, most people in the AI field openly said that AI will create new jobs as it replaces the older ones. However, most of those today admit AI can replace almost all human Jobs therefore "the power will concentrate in the hands of a few". However they forget that when all human labour becomes obsolete, all administrative "human" jobs will also become obsolete along with it, there will be no justification for those minority to stay in power, they will have the same power as everyone has, that is "one vote to one person". In short; this will be the "decentralization of power into the hands of the masses" that I am hinting about.

    • @a.tevetoglu3366
      @a.tevetoglu3366 3 місяці тому

      AI does not erase the biological reflexes that are responsible for power hierarchy in the first place. Power does not shift to 'the masses' (unless 'the masses' are engaged), it shifts to the owners of the tech. Hence Technocracy. The opposite of your hypothesis will happen imo, post industrial form of aristocracy will benefit most. To a billionaire only another billionaire is a human.

    • @vallab19
      @vallab19 3 місяці тому

      @@a.tevetoglu3366 I respectfully disagree with your saying that the present “Technocracy” will survive in the AI future. In the coming AGI dominated future, the rapid progress in technology will render all human labour redundant. Therefore an ‘equitable’ Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) will become necessary to prevent the popular uprising of the masses. The present legacy (capitalism, socialism etc.) world economy based on income, wages, profit, commodity values (money) will crumble down due to the consequences of UBI. In our present society most human crimes (including sexuality) are motivated by economic values or “money” therefore ending the money will also make most crimes as we know today, to go out of the existence. In My 1981 "Reduction in Working Hours Theory”, I departed from Marxism, claiming that “The human labour relations (compulsion) in order to obtain their means of subsistence is the root cause of exploitation that leads to almost all kinds of evils in human society.” The popular mass movement which began with the UBI probably will continue to survive with the collective decision (one person one vote) as the democratic “will” of the people, taking “control” of the power instead of a minority. Humans merging with the AGI, or ASI perhaps the right solution at the end.

    Wow! Beyang is very smart and charismatic. These are some insights 1. Being able to do a pull request is a good proxy indicator 2. They give you the option to choose which LLM you want 3. Their two main features are in line completion and chat 4. Context Fetching is one of the most important factors 5. They care more about product metrics over evals 6. Sometimes simpler is better when it comes to models like in the weather example 7. They have rate limiters to prevent abuse 8. Local models can sometimes be better due to privacy and cost 9. For developers, even shaving off milliseconds is important 10. They built the RAG internally due to abstraction boundaries/API necessary 11. One outcome of this whole GenAI revolution is that a company vertically integrates the platform and creates a proprietary developer platform.
