Welcome to the Gear Priority Podcast w/ Justin Outdoors
I'm not a bidet person myself. 95% of the time i can fully wipe with less than 6 squares of a good 2 ply, so there's not really any weight to be saved and i just don't enjoy the feeling of a damp ass. But i have started bringing a 3g bidet for the rare messy constitutional, or trail showers. Since it weighs so little and fits nicely in with my trowel, there's no reason to leave it at home.
Well, getting a lighter DOUBLE wall SOLO TENT than my Dyneema Notch Li will be difficult and still have Dyneema's strength, waterproofness and non-stretchability. BOOTS could go lighter with innovative materials in uppers and especially the soles. STOVES can get lighter with 100% titanium. SLEEPING BAGS/QUILTS can't beat down for lightness, compressibility and loft retention.BUT recent advances in sustainable DWR treatment for down has solved down's worst problem, i.e. becoming like wet KLEENEX when soaked. PACKS can get a little lighter with stronger, lighter fabric but they can get better with better design. Ex. I like my Osprey EXOS' comfort but that is entirely personal and based on body type.
Waterproof-breathable is not breathable in the rain, it is not breathable in high humidity, and it is only slightly breathable in a climate the does not require a waterproof shell. It is a total waste of money. Use a breathable shell and pack an impermeable silnylon rain jacket for when you need rain protection.
The Defy rocks !! Amazon was $145 CDN and $80/yr so all in $225 CDN vs an InReach for a mere $800 bucks !! Yea Bullett is gone but they're still chugging away !!
Man watching this just makes it more depressing that they went out of business :(
Blending alpaca and merino wool combines some advantages of both. 100% alpaca knitted garments often stretch out of shape but blending the fiber with wool before spinning adds the wonderful elastic qualities that help knitted garments keep their shape. Adding silk fiber to alpaca also helps to decrease stretching and adds strength as well. Another warm strong fiber that I rarely see mentioned is mohair. Adding mohair (best to use kid mohair as adult mohair is usually scratchy) adds a great deal of strength and warmth.
Raise a herd alpaca, processing our own fleece, and vertically integrating our very small operation, this interview was a treasure trove of information. Thank you!!
What is wrong with P U coatings? Can this not be fixed with spray on silicone?
I own both and both are really good. While I love both, I find merino to be better in most ways, but there are different grades of merino wth some much better than others. Most of my merino is soft, comfy and warm-much warmer than alpaca for sure. Alpaca is warm and not itchy at all. Merino seems warmer. Possum blends of merino are amazing. Also, merinos tend not to stretch, while Alpaca stretches quite a bit, too much really. Also, alpaca seems to wear out faster. But if you get bad merino it will be itchy. I have a lot of alpaca and it is much more casual due to the stretching. Merino holds up better and looks fine even in fancy restaurants cuz it seems dressier. I own lots of gear from AGC, and unfortunately it now seems out of business. Personally, I prefer the warmth and versatility of merinos more than alpaca, but I'm certainly not getting rid of my Alpaca. I'll wear it until it's in rags and same for my merinos. And I'm talking about sweaters here, not base layers. I prefer synthetics for base-layers. Merino base layer is the worst for me, and I don't have any alpaca base layers. Synthetics all the way for me in terms of base layers.
Not to forget Polartec classic micro fleece which is great too, less breathable but more durable.
This is a great conversation. I think for most people the value, cost issue should be a bit more important. The difference between a 8 and 12 lb base weight, same gear functionality is $1500 or so. Yet, most people won't work that hard to shave 4 lbs of body weight or improve fitness such that 4 lbs difference doesn't matter. It's a lot easier for people to spend $ vs getting in excellent physical shape.
Why dont you guys mention the sling fin tents. I think its probably one of the best tents out there. Especially you justin. I saw your interview with tim from sling fin. Also the owner of slingfin. Any way i think it blows msr nemo and big agnes tents away
Very, very cool tents. However, as long as Zpacks does not have an EU shop I’m not interested to purchase any of their tents. The Duplex costs me up to 1000€ at my housedoor. DCF tents aren’t easily available in Europe. Will have to buy a Bonfus tent instead
Be interested to hear your thought on the X Done 2 when it comes out
Some innovative historical tents I have had: Nemo made a rent with inflatable tube pillars instead of poles, also the Sierra Design Flash had the same external pole all in one double wall design freestanding design that you could put up quickly without the risk of getting the inner wet.
What fabric makes for the best tent flooring?
Too bad the company doesn't exist anymore!
Just bought the ionisphere 5, really interesting to see the thought process behind the designs, great interview
As someone who does multiples polar expeditions every year. Their is definitely place to progress. A 5 to 7 lbs tent is considered lightweight.
Hot take: I wipe my ass before leave for a hiking trip so I don’t have to take toilet paper and I save more weight.
Can’t wait to get my hands on some of these. It’s been a struggle!
Same. I want Justin’s shirt 😂😂😂
I never knew alpaca 🦙 is so hard to work with
"Mattress Tester", best job in the world!
Just got a Flextail pad, 25". WAS using a Big Agnus Rapide 20". Gave that to my wife. Hey, sometimes ya gotta take one for the team.
He's calling free-standing tents "traditional". I was using tents long before them. Canvas! The free-standing jobs are new. Trekking pole tents are a return to tradition!
Dacron is low stretch. A little shock cord should compensate for wet stretched nylon. RTV seem sealing for sil coatings?
So true. Glass drinks taste so much better. I’m all for comfortability, with some weight consideration. If I don’t feel comfortable or get a good nights sleep, my hike, especially on a thru hike, will be miserable. I have an autoimmune disease and do my best to complete my hikes, I just take a lot longer. So I won’t be buying a lightweight tent, because on some days, I won’t leave my tent. I don’t mind packing more lbs as long as my pack is comfortable, which it is. I purchased the copper spur ul 2, and it’s perfect for my circumstances, it’s my hotel for those days I can’t hike on my thru hike. Where I cut weight is my sleeping system, which I searched high and low for a cold sleeper lightweight quilt, I found the lightest warmest clothes and cooking gear all lightweight. My base weight is only 14 pounds and that’s with some winter gear, just incase.
How did I just find out about your podcast?
Awesome!
I think companies have completely ignorant people working for them due to DEI and A.I. hiring practices.
I'm one of the, seemingly rare, people who will spend the extra money for gear that is made in the USA, especially when it is also the lightest on the market. I've been using Zpacks gear for a few years now and have no complaints. I live out of a Plex Solo on trail and just dropped 2lbs off my pack by purchasing Arc Haul Ultra 60L and so far I'm loving it. People who complain about the back panel being useless are overpacking their packs. I'm able to carry a full BV500, all of my gear and still get the benefit of the air between the panel and the main body. One of my favorite Zpacks items is the Lotus UL Umbrella. When I'm in areas where trees are scarce and the sun is beating down, the umbrella is awesome.
Will alpaka keep you warm if it gets drenched
Be nice to see version number for revolutions of the products eg v1.01 etc so you know what one you buying specially when buying from importers in other countries or secondhand you know what your getting
Check out Macpac's nitro hoodie & pisa alpha jacket .. amazing value, amazing moisture control, light, warm. Game changer.
Hopefully you can tell me what the little rubber thing that is fused on a small loop of cord under the rainfly of the Mayfly OSMO is. There is one on each underside of the rainfly at the apex and located just toward the end of the cross beam. I assume you place the inner loop over the socket end of the cross beam. Is this correct and if not what is it for?
those who can do, those who cant talk endlessly about gear ad nauseam.
I may need my family to band together and organize an intervention for my gear addiction. Who's worse here? Me for listening to two guys discuss pads or the guys discussing the pads for an hour and half?
So why can he say Melbourne (Florida) correctly yet any American talking about Melbourne Australia says “Melborrrrn?”
Almost everything is sold out on the website... so spend less time making podcasts and more time sewing!😤 😭
Do you have videos of the OR event gear booths?
HORRIBLE COMPANY, PRODUCTS, AND WARRANTIES...THEY ARE OUT FOR THE MONEY WITH NO REGAURD FOR CUSTOMERS OR QUALITY.
How does this not have more views?
One of these years lol
Dan plz make a 2p double walled dyneema tent!
Hoping to hear something about HMG MID 1 , It's the last contender against th DURSTON X MID PRO 1 .Specifically the construction as in the seams and stitching. Just listening to them chat opens up the deep mysteries for YEAH everyone.
Alpha Direct makes a great liner for a WINTER sleeping bag "topper" that will collect our perspiration when it condenses. This is instead of letting it condense INSIDE out bag's top shell with no topper. I'm making one for my -20 F. winter mummy Remove the Alpha Direct topper, when the condensation is frozen then shake it out and pack it away. I'll sew a very light cover to the Alpha Direct to hold it in place and to hold some of the frozen condensation. I've yet to find a lighter insulation layer for my purpose.
Imo Single wall Shelters are only semi functional. I fully understand the Weight issue but at the end of the day the purpose of your tent is to keep you and your stuff safe and dry. If condensation can form on your inner wall like a single wall tent then sacrifice in weight is not worth it at that point to essentially sleep in a wet bag. Function is Number 1 and Weight is number 2.
The right man said he prefers free-standing tent but the hornet nemo isn t freestanding. It s only semi freestanding and also needs stacks to stand properly. And for the trekking pole tents pitching on sand there exist sand pegs no? Doesn t they do the job?? Isn t it better than a snapping pole of a freestanding tent?
Why does no one talk about Lighthart Gear tents?
Maybe I'm ADD but five minutes in we are still not on topic.
