I was so so so so excited to read Intermezzo by Sally Rooney - it was such a privilege to receive this book and get to share my thoughts with you! This book was different for Sally Rooney - I found the characters more emotionally intelligent than her others and didn't find myself wanting to scream due to lack of communication lol - but watch my review near the end for more on that:) Thank you f...

    I'm the one who buys the page holders! Lol. And yes it's for accessibility. I have RSIs in my shoulders/forearms so I try out book holders to make it easier on my arms. They're not great, tbh! Sometimes they're helpful, but sometimes I find (depending on the book size, my posture, and other factors) that I need to put a lot of pressure down with my thumb to keep the page open, which defeats the purpose. I have yet to find a book holder that I'll happily use for all/most of my books. If your arms don't hurt, I don't recommend them. If they do hurt, they might help *sometimes*. But you'll probably need a combo of different ones to meet your needs, anyway. They suck.

    i don’t annotate but it’s because it triggers a response that makes me feel like I’m back in high school and I’m rushing thru a book I didn’t read and need to quickly compile crap for an essay. I don’t like dog earing but that’s simply bc I’ve had books rip on those spots and I enjoy the chaos of guessing where I left off. I don’t purposefully crack my spines, but if it happens it happens. the only times I specifically go out of my way to gently ease in a spine is in MASSIVE paperbacks where I’m worried they may actually fall apart. needless to say, majority of my books are pristine but I have good reason for all of it. just as the same people who don’t have pristine books have good reason. I don’t think someone who annotates is cooler than someone who doesn’t simply because they wrote in their book. nor do I think someone who annotates is an idiot for marking up their books. it’s just a preference. literally. it’s no different than someone preferring one genre or the other. that said resale value is super dumb unless you’re specifically buying a rare edition of like a book from the 1800s in which case, yeah that’s history, leave things be

    100% agree. I will only step in on the TBR cart (though I myself won't buy one). For some people, it's like a check-list, but physical. I know with ADHD it's super easy to lose track of how many of anything I buy so having a separate cart that would show it emptying would be a boost of endorphins (something we ADHDers lack). For me, I'm older (45...) and I've learned to do things differently despite this, so I'll likely have a specific shelf. But I can see why people have the carts. (and you can get them in plastic for super cheap...like $20... at back to school time for dorm students...both of my adult kids have one in their rooms and I have one in my office/spare bedroom)

    6:36 i got a kindle paper white 11th gen almost two years ago, and i literally cannot make this up-it’s literally unusable at this point with no damage or signs of wear. It literally will not do what it’s supposed to do for $150 dollars. Best Buy where I bought it refuse to look into it or fix and Amazon won’t do anything either. I travel a lot and this was going to be a game changer. I will NEVER NEVER get a kindle ever again. I’m even hesitant on rolling the dice on a Kobo. Am I going to throw $300 dollars away after I’m done? Everything is made to break in this society and it makes me so angry. A kindle is not a complicated device that is impossible to fix. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIX IT even if I pay for the repair!!

    Thank you for acknowledging the accessibility usage of some items! I'm disabled (partial paralysis of one arm, and both my thumbs dislocate easily) and often see products that I use out of necessity being mentioned in overconsumption critiques or de-influencing videos without mention of it. I'm not offended by people not promoting these items as accessibility tools, but I will admit, it becomes tiresome feeling like I'm living an alternate reality than most people after years of dealing with the tiny inconveniences of being disabled. It's just nice to feel understood sometimes. Totally agree with everything you've mentioned, though! The overconsumption in online reading spaces has annoyed the heck out of me and I feel like it further turns people off from the main point (actually reading and enjoying yourself!) by making them feel like they need to have the latest trendy accessories or a giant aesthetic stack of TBRs in order to share their hobby.

    I mostly cover my books myself, but i probably should just buy one at this point. These do serve a purpose, you shouldnt go crazy buying them, but my books get bent and beat up in my bag like crazy. I want to keep them safe, especially if the book isn't mine. My classes have had us wrap our books to keep them safe and keep us from damaging school property.

    Ho! New subscriber here! I know is a recent video you said you’d do a video on how amazon is destroying the publishing industry. Could you do a video about Apple Books? I haven’t done too much research into them and was wondering if they are a better option to kindle. I use to cringe at annotating until I took my English college course from my short time in college. That’s when I started annotating in books. I did it in my textbook especially for my psychology textbooks.

    I get a bookmark everytime I buy books. I only use a few of them, the rest of them get thrown in a display. As for my TBR, I have my in home library, and the books I'm reading next are out in my living room table cubbies. I have my Samsung tablet my husband git for free for being safe at work. I have the Kindle app where all my books were 100% free. I have over 7000 books on the Kindle app. I think like maybe 4 of them were bought and they were gifts from family.

    about the amazon book prices debacle: here in Germany we have a really neat thing preventing that to happen, called "Buchbindepreis". It basically is a law, that ensures that all books written in the German language , no matter where you buy it, have to be the exact price the publisher dictates. Some independent bookstores ignore that law, but Amazon can't. However this unfortunately does not apply to books in foreign languages.

    Its nice to see someone say you dont need all this stuff to just enjoy reading! I only got back into reading this year and use the heck out of my local library! I have a rule, the only books im allowed to buy without reading first are ones that my library doesnt have and probably wont get OR from authors i havent had a single miss from! It works well for me. Almost all of my bookmarks are handmade which is way more fun for me. I have a cart that i got on sale for 13 dollars that has my ten undread books and my art supplies and yarn. I actually got the cart cause my room is too small for another bookshelf and the cart can be rolled out of the way :p im a decently conscious consumer NOW but wow i used to be so bad with depression shopping, im a work in progress :p

    it just dawned on me that amazon is returning to their roots because they couldnt slaughter reading enough in their first attempt. they said "readers arent slaves to consumerism yet, we have to prime them into becoming slaves to consumerism through other avenues first." (diversifying their platform) and, in that diversifying, they were able to accomplish their proclaimed business model of pseudo-monopoly. now they have that cultural foothold, that social reliance, from readers as PEOPLE and not as readers. so they're willing to return and finish us off.

  • @colorblockpoprocks6973
    @colorblockpoprocks6973 10 днів тому

    my awareness of consumerism hitting the book market so hard has been... idk, disheartening? you should annotate your books with these tools we're selling. (no, you probably dont have that much insightful to say about anything, but mark it up anyway!) oh, you just marked up that book that you bought and it isnt pristine anymore, you should have bought a second copy to annotate instead! oh, and don't forget to color coordinate your annotations with the cover of the book! (because books looking a certain way is more important than reading its contents.) maybe pick up another bookmark, too! there totally *arent* tons of alternatives to a bookmark (or any of these products), we swear we're solving your problems"

    • @colorblockpoprocks6973
      @colorblockpoprocks6973 10 днів тому

      a good way to circumvent the consumerist attitudes rampant within reading right now is to rekindle (ahahah) your personal relationship with your local libraries! there's a healthy timeline for your TBR you just picked up (return date, which can still be refreshed with no pressure), and it's like a try-before-you-buy system! but, really, it also reminds you that you don't have to own every book you've ever read. you're allowed to walk away from a book forever and just hold the memories with you. not every book is going to even be worth the memories, but people have shelves of Hoover and Maas as if those books are something that speaks to their soul enough to burden others with when they pass lol my goal is only to own things that, when others see that i have it, it tells them about me. but that mindset is especially present when it comes to buying books. who cares why someone has a physical movie on their shelf, they very well may have liked it for superficial reasons. but i, at least, get spiritually invested in books that i love. i saw everything in my own mind's eye, every aspect that was conjured for me was exactly unique to me. it's harder to like a book superficially. The physical books i hope to gather aren't ever even TBRs, they're books I grew up reading that molded my tastes into what they are today. Ones that I read for free at a library first lol

    as a German (and a linguist), the 'van goCH, if you will' took me out hahaha small spaces really are a challenge, but this turned out great! I'd be scared of that Shining poster too lol but the La La Land poster is so cool :') I currently live in a very small apartment in my uni town, with half of my books here (very much overflowing off of my small bookshelf) and the rest at my parents' house -- I long for the day that I can display them all together! my ideal organizational system is alphabetically by author, and as I own both German and English books I'd like to keep them separate, so that it's easier for friends&family to browse if they wanna borrow something :) I used to have a designated tbr pile but I have accumulated so many unread books, my whole shelf has basically become a tbr stack at this point oops haha

    I must be in the minority because I love when people buy me books that they love. I do tell them that it will likely take me a while to get to it in order to read it, but I *love* getting other peoples' tastes in books. Feels very sentimental to me, particularly if it's not a well known book or by an obscure author.

    My tbr list is "books I already own at my house" ($1 used book sales always get me), and a tagged list on Storygraph. I tag each book by what library / internet archive / Libby format the book is available from so I can read those before buying anything else!! Idk, we are so lucky to live in the digital era. Books, movies, music we can all access in digital format first (or borrow a copy from the library), and then if we /really/ like it we can go ahead and purchase a copy for ourselves.

  • @allisarcadia

    The only reasons I even use an eReader at all is because my son [aka my husband on behalf of my son cause he's FOUR] bought it for me for Mother's day last year and because it's soooo easy for me to access libraries I don't usually get to go to. I just pay a small yearly fee [like, 10 bucks at most] to get an "out of district" library card and I have limitless books at my disposal without ever leaving my house. I read across pretty much all genres so having access to academic books via city libraries, which are typically the only libraries that have digital copies of academic reads, is just so damn convenient. I take it everywhere with me now but I have no desire for second one and can't imagine why I would ever need three at a time. I'm not gonna necessarily judge people for having multiple eReaders, it's not my money obviously, but I am gonna ask why you gotta have three or four. To me that's like having three or four tablets which... seems redundant at best? The color tech on the new colorwhatever readers doesn't even seem very good, it looks gimmicky and cheap so I just... I don't get it. The TBR carts I can understand, though. I have a shelf on one of my bookcases I use specifically for books that need to be read still which is essentially the same thing. Having a dedicated cart doesn't seem too unreasonable especially if you're trying to curate your shelves for aesthetic reasons or by genre or whatever organization you like. Although if the goal is to always have the cart 100% full at all times, that's... that's just stressful to me. Can't relate to that.
