Photographing Gloucestershire, Epic Views, Rivers, Woods and Historic Docklands, Easy Accessibility
This is the benefit of shooting local!
In this video I visit the Forest of Dean's Symonds Yat, Gloucester Docks, and a unique local location.
I really do not do it enough, so I had the challenge of finding three local locations that are easy access to prove that I don't always have to travel far to get out with my camera. So it's off to the Forest of Dean and Gloucester City Centre to see what I can Photograph, a wide variety of subjects including rivers, woodland, historic docks and grand vista's!
Hopefully this will serve as inspiration for your next photography trip around your local area.
Join me, my Nikon Z7ii and my ropey old van on my Landscape Photography adventures as we explore.
You can find Paul's UA-cam channel here :- @paulwbakerphotography
Thanks!

    Loved the vid, makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not the only numpty who makes such simple mistakes 🤣 Seriously though, the tide there is lethal, comes in really quickly, but also is highly variable, some days it won't make it up the beach, so always needs checking. I've not yet found it myself, but around the cliffs there is supposed to be an old ship wreck buried in the sand that becomes visible at low tide, a search on here should give you some info, there was another photography channel that featured it.

I did however get a nice image near that cliff face with the boat wreck 'Sheraton' did you know about that? It was probably only another 5 mins walk from where you were. Loved the vid, done that walk a few times and got nothing from it, usually birding though. If you go again, use the RSPB car park, it's a lot closer to the old jetty, and the wall. You can get some great sunsets there looking across the Wash and you can often see Lincolnshire on the horizon, and it's especially good when the wading birds are pushed up off the mud on very high tides, they silhouette against the orange sky, often making all sorts of shapes as they fly around in flocks of hundreds and sometimes thousands to a flock. You are a braver man than me though going on that mud, the tide will come in in a blink of an eye and you don't want to be stuck out there.

      @RoamingPhotography 21 день тому

      Thank you for watching Steve 👍 yes I understand there is quite the display of birds, certainly something to think about when I go back. I did see the rspb car park but was advised vans aren't allowed, especially as I have a high top. Hopefully you can confirm it for me? I got to admit I didn't venture to far from the shore lol, although I was more worried about sinking 😅

    • @southernsteve1
      @southernsteve1 21 день тому

      @@RoamingPhotography not sure about the hight restriction, you may well be right though, I've never noticed but best I do as I'm likely to be in a van myself next time I visit. Probably best to contact the RSPB, maybe at Titchwell as Snettisham isn't a manned reserve. Re the waders, the spectacular, as it's called, only happens on very high tides, if my memory is correct it's tides over 7m, but there is a predicted table on the RSPB Snettisham website. It does get very busy indeed, but worth the effort. Morning the sun shines on the birds and they change from silver to black as they turn and it makes a starling murmuration look ok, and against a sunset they are silhouetted. Don't go on a normal high tide as you'll end up walking all that way and looking at mud as the tide comes in and out miles away, I know from bitter experience 🙄🤣Look forward to seeing more of your vids 👍👍

    Steve that grass around the jetty is actually Samphire , you can eat it. I love it there especially when there is a spectacular and the waders mermerate behind the jetty.

      Yes I ahve sonce found out is was Samphire lol the lady at the campsite we stayed on said people travel far to see the murmurations, sounds like it is an amazing site. Thank you for watching 👌

    It really is a stunning location and one that I finally managed to visit earlier this year as we headed up to Lewis and Harris. Unfortunately the lighting wasn't great when I was there but still great to see it in flesh. You were treated to some great light

    That brought back many happy memories. What a stunning location it is, unfortunately when myself and my wife visited it was a very sunny day so there was no atmosphere, it was still a fantastic visit but one to return in different conditions. I love the images you captured with the low cloud, very nice

      Cheers Paul, glad you enjoyed it 👍 yes it's an amazing place hopefully you get to return soon. I was the reverse of yourselves, Scotland in February, so moody was always going to be on the cards it was more a case of whether I would get some sun to go with it lol

    Fantastic images from a location that I wasn't able to visit when I was in Dorset last year due to it being a long drive from my camp site in the East of the county and the tides were not favourable. I love the image that you don't like and let's face it, the new Gen AI tool is there to be used, it is a shame about the hillside looking different but I'm sure a few attempts and Gen AI would replace it perfectly

      Thanks Paul 👍 Yeah I get it, I just cant look at it without thinking "ha, that's the one you messed up!", I may revisit it at some point and do a better job on the removals, as I did love the light and comp on that one. I think we are more critical of ourselves than others when you are doing what you enjoy, human nature I suppose 😳

    Hi, it was great to meet you at Cannock Chase the other week on the Thumbs up meet up. I was already subscribed to your channel that's why I recognised you but couldn't remember where from 😊 I had the same issue at Snettisham when I visited in May a couple of years ago, right in the height of the breeding season so access was restricted and grass around the Groynes. To be honest I'm not sure if I actually took any photos of the old jetty. I did take a few images of areas of cracked mud but I'm not that happy with them. Does the grass disappear over the winter months do you know?

    • @RoamingPhotography
      @RoamingPhotography 25 днів тому

      Hi Paul, it was good to meet you to, enjoyed that morning, looking forward to the next one 👍 I have just done some research and it is called Samphire (its edible!) apparently, and it grows prolifically on mud flats, so I googled "does coastal samphire grow all year?" and got this... "No, the UK season runs from approx June through to September. Outside of these months, samphire disappears, usually with the frosts in autumn." So hopefully it is a good winter shoot, but my googling isn't the best lol I usually end up with baked bean recipes. 🫤

      @tuftyhill 23 дні тому

      @@RoamingPhotographyah that's great to know. If I'd known it was samphire I'd have dug some up 😊 it's really nice 😋 I've asked the Thumbs up team to try and sort another date out for the next meet because my calendar is getting quite busy through Sept - Nov as I'll be visiting Northumberland and the Peak District plus a few trips to the Lakes
