    Oh great, the deadbolt i have is NONE OF THESE. It has a black spring type thing (on bottom) like the one in the middle on the right BUT does not have that mechanism that you just turn to change the backset. I am so bloody annoyed how to change it because it definitely has 2 openings marked 2 3/8" and 2 3/4". Those 2 openings are right above the black spring. The lock barrel has "Beaver" stamped on it which i believe was probably sold by Beaver Lumber here in Canada and long out of business. Also has "Made in Taiwan" stamped internally and 1992.9 which i assume is year and month it was made. The latch itself has U.S. Patent No. 4839025 stamped on it, so maybe that is an option for me to look---maybe the Patent explains how to change it. GRRRRR! It's brand new that i picked up at Value Village years ago with no instructions. My old, detached garage door never had a deadbolt installed and i wanted to use it there.

      Well with the help of Google and searching with the US Patent number---don't ask me why the US Patent office site failed me, that POS said "item not found"--yet Google showed the US Patent link with the writeup. Used the US site one other time and it worked fine. ANYWAYS, there is a small pin (it has 2 little knobs of different diameters on each side of the latch). Push that pin UPWARD in its slot against spring tension, and you are then able to slide the turning mechanism in or out to whichever backset you need. I had to move it out to the 2 3/4" location.

    Gone and bought a cheap and nasty version of this lock (as if that's possible) and its fixed! they have made the wheels such a tight fit theres zero shim space! But, where the code mechanism is fitted, the outer casing has too large a hole by like 0.5mm, so you can slide something in and simply push on the case locking claw...... like shimming an old padlock with a bit of coke can.

    Thank you for such a fantastic video. Our vendor forgot to remove out lockbox and my wife and I don't remember the key combinations. We tried everything but could not unlock / remove the lockbox. This has been going on for at least 7 years because we just left it alone till I watched your video. That little hole you showed, is on the right of our lockbox. The paper click idea did not work for us for some reason but we used our son's iron pick that he uses to comb his hair. It is a little stronger than a paper click and it WORKED! Thank you for the video.

      Question for you both. If you were to replace the missing wood inside the door to allow the latch material to catch onto, how much would a repair like that cost a customer?

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo 10 днів тому

      @@resecurelatch you won’t find many people willing to save this door haha But, if you were to go with a handyman to do a “poor mans dutchman” on a standard door that was not this severe, you’d be looking at $200.00 minimum from like a mobile guy. But, the poor mans version is really to fill in miss-cut doorknob holes. I have met customers who paid anywhere from $650.00-$1,200.00 for a proper dutchman repair on a door that was mortised. The more custom the door and the more skilled the carpenter, the higher the cost. Also, travel time because you might be shocked how far out you gotta call to find a skilled carpenter who can do one. A proper dutchman maintains structural integrity of the door and is a perfect match to the doors grain. But, due to the high-cost of a dutchman and lack of skilled-employees working at these companies, you usually only are offered replacement. Prices will vary depending on location, I am a Cali Locksmith, so these are the prices here. Your average licensed handyman here runs about $45/hr and your tradesmen can be anywhere from $75/hr to $100+/hr labor.

    Do you have a trick on getting the cylinder out of the knob once the cylinder falls in side?

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo 15 днів тому

      That is the tricky part lol The real trick is getting the bible (thin piece on top of the cylinder) to the upright position. Some are tougher than others, sometimes a big pair of tweezers helps as you hold the front with your thumb or pointer finger tip. In the future you can always put your key or any key that fits into the keyway during the process just to keep it from falling in! Most defiants add the hooks on the cylinders to prevent that now a days.

    Great to see ya back Kilo! Anyway, there are basically three different styles of emergency outside access for privacy sets. This one in which there is a rotating disc with a slot which you turn, one with a hole in which you insert a probe and push straight in, and another with a hole in which you insert a flathead screwdriver or similar flat object and turn a post which has a slot in it.

    Is there a way to tighten the tailpiece? I have a lock that in all other aspects works like it should, but there is a bunch of play with the tailpiece which im worried will lead to a soon to be replaced lock, i want to avoid that cost as long as possible. Can it be tightened? The play is vertical... the lock used to be hard to turn so the extra force that used to be required may have caused it to go loose, but since replacing the inner-door piece it turns beautifully. Though the tail piece play is bothering me.

    Whose idea was it to call master keys “skeleton keys”? It only makes sense to call the *SKINNY, STICK-LIKE* KEYS “SKELETON KEYS”! I don’t care, I’m still calling them skeleton keys. That’s so dumb

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo 27 днів тому

      A lot of speculation exists about the term and who created it. During the renaissance era, they were decorated with little skulls which could be where it really got its name. Another version of the story is that it’s a key where you strip away all the “meat” and leave the “bones” of the key. Since a Master Key is basically a key cut down to fit into multiple locks. Many people call all Bit and Barrel Keys “Skeleton Keys”, but if it only opens one specific cabinet then it is just simply a key lol It also helps the locksmith tremendously if you know you have a Bit Key or a Barrel Key or if it truly does open multiple locks 😅
