Stickin' To It
Приєднався 23 лип 2013
Stickin' To It was born from whittling away at walking sticks, but it's so much more than that. It's a lifestyle. It's getting out there in nature, exploring the great outdoors... hiking, camping, adventuring... living in the moment and maybe even getting lost in the woods. (Don't worry. I'll bring a compass! ;)
You'll find it all here, from creating walking sticks to taking them on hikes. I'll bring you along for whatever adventures I get up to!
So get out there, have fun, and keep Stickin' To It!

Protecting with Polyurethane | Impromptu Walking Stick Video | #Woodworking
This is just a quick video that I threw together while sealing a batch of walking sticks that I'm preparing for a craft show. I use polyurethane because of the strength and the dry time. It really has worked great through the years.
Have a great day!!
Get out there!

Try checking the volume out put
Yeah tell me about it! 🤣 My audio was terrible in this video because this Is One of my first videos that I dropped at a later date.
Nice!
Thanks!
Bro those are awesome looking walking sticks. How much do you get for them?
@@eddiegorden I sell them for about 32 to 35 depending on the height
I have been searching all over the internet for one of those water bottle holders. I made a couple dozen canes and walking sticks and that is the perfect solution for displaying them at swap meets. Where did you find them?
Funny thing is I've had these at my family land for years. I used to play paintball for years as a kid and my dad got these so we can hide behind them. I think he got them from my uncle who worked with Coke.
Good process and demonstration. Well done!
Thanks Mr Dennis!
Spalted oak one was real nice. Also like those tobacco sticks, did you stain them first or is that the natural color? Do you put rubber tips on them?
@@dlipp23 that is the tobacco sticks natural color. They are so old and so dark from all the dirt and tobacco juices over the years that they are just naturally dark on the outside. And yes I add rubber tips to all my walking sticks when ever I'm selling them I would feel that it's wrong to not set someone up for their stick to last long-term.
Just wondering -- ever try brushing on Hardwood Flooring Poly onto sticks..? - I redid my own Oak Floors once in the past and I was pretty impressed with how durable - yet - good to work with -- for that type of poly mix.
@@Woody.D828 I thought about using floor poly but I haven't just yet I mean it's obviously going to be very strong for its intended use. I would definitely have to give that a try in the future!
Dude, write a script and plan your video. 3 minutes of spinning a stick over a drum sander.
@@goodbad59 Hey David, This is one of those impromptu days where I just turn the camera on and went to the shop. Not every video is planned nor scripted. It's true that Scripts do help as a guide but it's also a good thing not to have one sometimes. To each their own. Many people don't even know what a drum sander is so it's good to show people how, not to just talk about it. Please make a video for me to see it in a better way and I'll definitely watch it. Thank you sir!
Nice peaceful and relaxing way to wake up while I'm drinking my coffee. You're getting good with all the different angled shots in the video.
@@dlipp23 thanks dude! I love going on adventures in between the work pick up sometimes you have to show what the walking sticks are used for. Not just a corner princess 🤣 Y'all have a good day! And Keep Sickin' to it!
@@stickin2it My wife and I go hiking usually once a week so my stick sits in the corner 6 days a week. :)) 😀 I finally found someone who has tobacco sticks, hopefully picking up about 20 today.
@@dlipp23 nice!!! Be sure to round them corners! Splinters are on the hunt for some hands
Keep it up! You're gonna be super popular one day🫡👍
Thanks man!!
Enjoyed your great adventure. I went gold prospecting in North Carolina streams and actually found some gold. Very exiting when you do! Keep on, keeping on!
Thanks Mr. Dennis!
Great video. Loved the underwater shot.
Thanks Dad!
😮 beautiful
Thanks!
new sub good stuff
@@perfectleveladventurefishi619 thanks dude!!!
You ever use wood dye, then stain the 10 coats of poly? 3D look. I did this on the trimwork in the boardroom of Chattanooga electric company. No one but 6 people will ever see it...... lol but it was amazing looking
I've never even heard of that. That sounds pretty freaking cool. Do you stain every coat of the poly or are you saying after the wood dye you'll add 10 coats of poly?
@@stickin2it we used red dye wiped it on, waited a few hrs, wiped a dark stain on the would spay poly let dry, spray, dry spray dry. Etc.... then after the carpenters installed it we brushed another coat on.
@@stickin2it I know I replied to you but it's not showing up
Why PU instead of a laquer?
Because polyurethane is more durable than lacquer. Especially for the walking sticks and I want the finish to be as Strong as possible so that the shine can last. Do you use lacquer? And if you do, what benefits do you see of it?
@@stickin2it Ahh that makes sense. I don't make walking sticks, so I was curious about the reasons for making them the way you do
Ahh Roger that! Yeah I know that lacquer dries faster which would be a benefit when finishing but I've always used Poly and it's what I know best. Keep Stickin' To It!!
How long do you dry them before coating them with p/I?
@@darylkaufman9142 I let the sticks dry for about 5 to 6 months before I even take the bark off and then start working on it from there. I keep it in a dried place in my garage.
You mean a "Hiking"/ Staff stick, much different than a "Walking" stick/cane". Please use correct terminology and you'll be taken seriously.
David, it all depends where you grew up and how you were raised. I've always used the term walking stick. So I'll stick to what I use. No pun intended 😁 And as for being taken seriously, none of us are getting out alive. So please focus on the important things in life instead of what words people use.. You'll be so much happier.
LOL, “weeee…” I’m still laughing. 🤣

Cant stand up in it
Of course you can't. This rig is made to go with those stand-up rigs can't go. This is for the folks that enjoy getting off the grid and carrying minimal stuff. It's a step above the tent on the ground that you look cooler doing it. Just curious, what kind of RV do you use?
@@stickin2it I don't have an rv. I'm saving for a scamp. No to vacation in but to escape responsibility and liabilities
Oh Scamps are awesome! Nothing too complicated and they hold up with that fiberglass shell. You can almost get those things anywhere.
Thank you, it was right to the point.
I'll be working on a steam video in the future showing my setup
Look like an awesome time on the water man . Kayaking 🛶 is so much fun especially on hot 🥵 days man . My whole entire family ( wife , 6 boys , daughter in law , Granddaughter , soon my Grandson who just 1 years & 2 months old , my lil brother , & his son ) we all love to go kayaking 🛶 & kayak camping 🏕 which we are about to do a 40 mile kayak camping 🏕 trip with some family friends for Labor day weekend . You should try kayak camping 🏕 man . We kayak 🛶 & fish doing the day & camp & cook the fish we catch for dinner if we catch anything . It's a lot of fun with friends and family man . In the video at 13:03 i like how you was barefooted 👣 man . I am a barefooted 👣 / flip flops 🩴guy me & my 6 boys because we all have very very extremely wide feet 🦶 . I have to kayak 🛶 barefooted 👣 because my feet 🦶 are very very extremely wide and big at sz15 6E wide with very very chubby fat wide toes that are Evenly straight across making my foot very very Extremely wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe . My foot outgrow shoes , socks , & boots when I was young so kayaking 🛶 barefooted 👣 is what I have to do . Good video buddy thanks you for sharing this video .
@@mackjenkins7721 That's awesome that you get your family together like that and have an awesome time. When you're on the river like that, barefoot is the way to go because you are going to get wet no matter what so it's just easier that way. Have a great time and keep Stickin' To It!!
Is pulling a stick out of a box with no additional scenes for context really youtube worthy? 👎 at least show us the steam part
It's a Short and a preview, so it's not really long enough for a full explanation. It was my first time recording a Steam video so I didn't know the angles and what not. The steam fogged up the lens at a few points hard to see anything after that.
What does steaming do?
Steaming your walking sticks allows you to either straighten or shape the sticks. It works really well with oak. The lignin(glue) in the tree heats up and loosens making it easier to shape.
@@stickin2it interesting. Thanks
Enjoyed your hike. Hope you didn’t have to amputate that finger. Keep on, keeping on!
🤣🤣 Thanks Mr. Dennis!!! Have a great day!!!
Great presentation of a beautiful state park.
Thanks Dad! It is an awesome park!
great video ! the canoochee river is a great river to fish . I have caught some big bass out of there
@@SEGKBF I haven't been able to catch a bass out of there yet, but if I ever want some peace or to get quiet I just go kayaking down the canoochee. The way the trees just cover the river for majority of the way and how quiet it can be. It's very nice
nice setup. good luck and have a good day
@@BlayzsFishingAdventure thank you so much!! I've had this kayak for about 15 years since I was in the military lol but it is a trooper and still going.
I can not believe how straight your sticks grow. Everything up here grows around corners!
@@paulleeper3188 hahahahaha now that was pretty funny. But where I'm harvesting the sticks have no choice but to grow straight up because of the larger trees around them taking most of the sun. So growing straight makes him get the sun quicker.
Outstanding work! Things like this make huge differences in peoples lives it shows them that people do care. Good on you brother! I am just beginning to learn to build sticks and I watch a lot of videos for guidance. My skills are low but I am learning. I like what you do.
Thank you Mr Paul!!! Walking sticks have always been a passion of mine even to the point when I was a kid. I just picked up a tree ranch and hike down the Appalachian trail.
@@stickin2it I am beginning to gather sticks and needed tools to start this journey into sticks. Right now I need to find a larger belt sander.
What's a tobacco stick? Is it like the wood from tobacco plants?
So back in the day the farmers would actually hang. The tobacco leaves up on the tobacco sticks to dry in the barns. Some of these sticks you can actually still smell the tobacco in them from years and years of use. It's a very cool find.
@stickin2it oh interesting! I roll my own cigars and age leaves on metal racks. If I switch to wood, would that make new tobacco sticks?
Hahaha Yes, technically it would.
Looks like a nice trip up and down the river. We had a cabin on the Current River here in Missouri. We did the Kayaking, Tubing, 4-wheeling, and on the trail with the side- by everyday. Then age caught up with us and we sold out. Therefore, I know you had a blast on this trip! Keep on, keeping on!
It's always a great time to get up on the river!! It's so peaceful
That $9.98 reel sounds like a dollar tree special! If you hook into anything more than a bream those gears are coming apart in that thing!😄 Love kayak fishing just for the serenity of it.
Hahahaha I added this reel to my gear kit just in case I have a kid come along. Shoot my little nephew rilled in a 5-pounder on that reel. It surprised me.
I bought one of those $50, battery chain saws. Saves a lot of time.
I thought about it, but when I'm walking to good ways to scout for trees and everything I'd rather carry the half pound bow. Saw you. Just have to make sure that you have a very nice sharp blade or else it'll be double the work.
Hey buddy, enjoyed the video. How long do you usually let the sticks dry out for?? I know when working with boards its about a year per inch. I have made some out of Crepe Myrtle and they warped pretty good but nice sticks, my wifes is made from Myrtle wood and she loves it.
I don't let then dry out for a year because I keep mine stored up in a dry hot garage. Maybe 5 to 6 months and I can get to working. Crepe Myrtle is so strong!! I started working with that a few months ago and I didn't think it would be that strong.
@@stickin2it I have 6 Crepe Myrtle’s in my yard and every year I cut em back and get a few good sticks. I zip tie 4-5 of them with a broom handle to keep them straight when they dry.
I wonder if you would be able to steam bend them@@dlipp23. Once I get my steamer back up I'm going to need to give it a try
Looks like a great day of stick hunting!
@@danawrigleywalkingstickand5677 it's always a great day when you're stick hunting! Humid, but great!
Do you leave the bark on when you season it?
Hey Joel! Great question! One question that everyone will have a differ answer to. My first rule of thumb is to leave it on especially with Oak and Cherry, who cracks the first chance they get but if seasoned with the bark on will end up being Soo Soo strong. As for sweet gum, I leave it on because it allows you to make some pretty cool designs once these are ready to work on or it's pretty easy to remove if you desire. Maple is a tree that I can peel it ofF green and it won't split. I use different designs without the bark and with the bark for Maples. Keep Stickin' To It!!
Whatcha gonna do with em'?

Great idea. I started a cane business last January and I watch all your videos. I get a lot of info from them. I also try to make unusual walkers and you are an inspiration to me. I have sold a couple at local Jacksonville Florida swap meets but the hot weather seems to keep people away. I really like the shop setup and its fun to watch you in action making and selling your art. I like the Old Glory the best but I would have left out the barbeque.
@@nboldrini yeah that hot weather has been keeping us from really enjoying the Craft shows But fall time is coming 😁. Yeah I'm kind of iffy of the burning myself but you never know till you try it.
😂😂😂 Good God....I just begun. I use a simple box cutter and stain and polyurethane. Friends and Family love em. I find my pices during summertime and yard season. Mainly Crape Myrtle. I live in an Apartment so my tools are limited. I started with a small Red Tip my bro gave me. From that I just got addicted I guess. Are dad was a carpenter. Any small lathes for 6 to 7 foot pieces? Any pointers?
Crepe myrtle makes an amazing, very strong straight-ish Walking stick. Using box cutters, stain and urethane is the great beginner's way to go. Been making walking sticks for well over 10 years and I still use polyurethane. It's cheaper. You can get more of it and it dries fast. If you can find some maple, you can easily go ahead and skin that bark off as soon as you get it. Just be careful because it likes to bend as it dries. If you have Oak, keep the bark on no matter what it will Keep it from splitting. I haven't found a lathe over 3 ft normally. The best thing is just find a sapling, steam Bend it into shape if you are able to and sand it as smooth as possible. Good luck to your walking stick endeavors!!! And keep Stickin' To It!!
