ESP32-P4: I Built a Smart Home Ecosystem, Extreme Low Power & Energy Harvesting
In this video, I’ll show you how our smart door sensors interact with the ESP32-P4. These devices monitor temperature, humidity, air quality, and even estimate CO2 levels, all while operating on extremely low power. One version even uses a solar-powered Nichicon SLB battery designed to last over 10 years! The OBJEX Link S3LW, compatible with Power Delivery PPS 3.0 up to 100W, significantly simplifies power supply management, making the system more efficient and compact. By eliminating the need for an additional power supply for the LED strip, it reduces clutter and streamlines installation. In this video, I’ll show you how to provide power supply, set up, and program the ESP32 microcontroller, making it perfect for ESP32-based home automation projects.

Peppers ghost?
Thanks, was just going to do a thin PCB for a similar JAE WP10, but you've convinced me to go with a flex.
Thank you for sharing this. I really liked how you originally looked at using the IRF7319 but you then looked at the power consumption. So to do better you then looked at the 74HC86 but then, instead of just being lazy and picking to use that chip, you took the time to searched out the SN74LVC1G86DBVR to get the best power consumption possible. Very impressive work!
How did you solder?
Hot air gun + soldering iron
Where from you got esp32 p4 ? At what price?
Aliexpress ~70euro
Whats the name of the battery management ic?
mcp73832
Hmm i do wonder if there is already a guide for the dsi interface and how to use it.? I seem to struggle a bit with a different display
There are several examples that espressif provides if I'm not mistaken.

Hi guys, I'd like to test out a ELPM-S2LW, but ordering seems to be down at the moment. By the way, do you use a TPL5110 in your power latch?
We do not use TPL5110. We will soon start fundraising on CS, from there you can buy the ELPMs: www.crowdsupply.com/objex/objex-link-s3lw - I suggest you sign up for the fundraiser with your email to stay updated.
@@SalvatoreRaccardi great! is is programmable with Arduino IDE?
@@ThomasHaberkorn yes sure, arduino ide, vscode platformio, micropython etc..
Can it see what we see through them
does transparent oled screen know whats behind them
can you give more detail on the software side
Custom firmware FreeRTOS ESP-IDF (No Linux)
Is it programmed using ESP-IDF or Arduino? Or is it running linux? Has it a fast startup time? Thanks for the video.😀
Yes ESP-IDF, I honestly have not measured the startup time accurately, I can tell you that the microcontroller is very responsive.
what display type& model is that?
In the ESP32-P4 dk docs you can find the id model of the display.
How on earth do you make the screen start ? Is there something to know ? To wire it ? To power it ? Is mine defective? Do you have clue ? Thanks for your vids !
The header pins RST_LCD, PWM, 5V, GND have been connected? Have you made sure the devkit is turned on correctly? I recommend you follow the documentation: docs.espressif.com/projects/esp-dev-kits/en/latest/esp32p4/esp32-p4-function-ev-board/user_guide.html
@@SalvatoreRaccardi thank you for this Quick answer, i think i did all of that but i will investigate again
@@riendeplus1923 I just now followed his instructions when I unboxed my kit, and it started up immediately. I think you either have mis-wired yours, or maybe even your unit is defective. Re-check your wiring and try again?
Ok, so, i think a DuPont cable was guilty in this story ... :)
Nice! How did you wrote the gui? Using some kind of framework or simple html+css+js?
It is coded in C, it is an embedded system.
I see now. I thought it is a tablet😊@@SalvatoreRaccardi
nice vidio keep going on this kind of vidios
Great. Never heard someone speak Englishalian so good.
Are you kidding me? 😂
@@SalvatoreRaccardi 😁, really, it's a good idea adding usb power delivery to the system. Cheers.
I hope someone could make this screen compatible with HA Deck, it would be awesome to replace my streamdeck
I had honestly thought of developing a demo to control twitch chat and other things. Do you think it could be interesting. Maybe leave the code opensource on github.
@@SalvatoreRaccardi Do you think you could write the drivers required to make this P4 screen work with esphome? I think there would be a big audience for such a controller.
@@JamesTenniswood I think there is already someone who is doing it. I could work on it too.
Wow impressed by the lights
For smarthome is perfect
complimenti, bravo, bel lavoro.
Grazie!
you have promoted your objex s3 module instead of discussing about esp32 P4
I've demonstrated the potential of the ESP32-P4 by integrating it into the projects I've developed. Simply showing the ESP32-P4 without real-world demos wouldn't have conveyed its true capabilities or possible applications. Plus, showcasing the projects I've worked on is part of the goal of the video, and I see no problem with that.
Nice board to make a car speedometer cluster
Yep, the ESP32-P4 will significantly simplify the development of a wide range of projects.
Your work is amazing :)
Thank you very much!
I think the only mistake Espressif made was not embed in the ESP32-P4 the Wi-Fi Transceiver. It is a 400Mhz IC, very suitable for Smart Home devices, but you need to use another esp32 like C3 or C6 to complement you project. Great video. I always see your videos as soon as they are released.
Thank you so much for your comment and for the continuous support. I agree with you, the lack of an embedded Wi-Fi/BLE/... transceiver in the ESP32-P4 is a bit of a drawback, especially for smart home projects where connectivity is key. However, I think Espressif focused on performance and flexibility, allowing developers to combine different modules like the ESP32-C3 or C6/C5/H2.
@@SalvatoreRaccardi i still think they will release some kind of upgrade soon.
Mistake? not really. With the radio sharing the chip with fast dual core MCU would likely disturb it quite a lot. The two chip solution is likely to give better wifi and processing performance.
Good point.
WOW - this is great! Very well done! I think you'll be hitting the ball out of the park with this! I've just signed up for notifications on the crowd supply site and am looking forward to it. Will you be offering options to get the right solar panel, Lithium Ion Capacitor, and external antenna?
Thank you so much for your support! You will be able to buy every single accessory, including the 3D case. We are working on a final version for fundraising.
@@SalvatoreRaccardi That's great, I'm looking forward to it. Also, I just put up a note on the esp32 reddit forum to help spread the word. Good luck!
Nice work👍🏼 When will the OBJEX Link S3 Dev board be available for purchase?
In the coming weeks, we will launch a crowdfunding campaign on CrowdSupply. For now, we are focusing on promoting the product.
What tool did you use to write the program?
ESP32 devkit
Nice video, thank you :)
Creative video, thanks :)
Okay, I need this, where could I build thuis?
Battery less but you have a massive capacitor?
To be more precise without a standard AA/AAA/Coincell type battery.
@SalvatoreRaccardi these new chips I've seen using very low power. Are any of the less ordinary energy harvesting solutions like piezo electric disc's vibrating able to power this chip to send readings?
@@crouchingchicken007 Tests should be done with piezo electric, consider that the energy harvester should also be changed. Do you have any applications that use piezo electrics?
@SalvatoreRaccardi thanks for your response. Currently looking at vibrations and heavy forces being exerted onto the plates but not to extent of bending them
Such an amazing project 👏🏻
I wonder will we have small dev boards for the P4 like for the S3.
It can be done, would you just like to have a usb-c like interface like the classic devkits or would you like more? Would you keep the ESP32-P4 + ESP32-C6 combination?
@@SalvatoreRaccardi Don't really care as long as its small, mostly interested in the camera & display interface. And how hard it is to implement different displays for this. I would have a project that im now building using raspberry pi that uses a 2.9" 1440x1440 display and the camera interface. But i dont really like linux, MCU would be so much faster to boot up. There already seems to be one quite compact P4 module, WT01P4C6-S1.
Really nice dev-board for your ObjeX module. 🎉
Thank you!
So pulled the back panel off a single color OLED?
Theoretically it is so
Good afternoon Salvatore, I really liked your video, and with my brother we decided to make the same PCB for our house. But we have a problem, all the programs work except those that are related to WIfi. The only wifi function that works is the Wifi status. For example if we do a wifi scan it runs all the code until it reaches one of the WIfi functions and then it stops running. It would help us a lot if you or someone from the community could give us a hand. Thank you very much for your help.
Have you tried to see if other people online have experienced a similar problem?
@@SalvatoreRaccardi Thank you very much for your response. Yes, I have asked on several forums, but so far they have not been able to give me an answer.
We are not sure if the problem is a configuration, library or PCB communication system issue.
what antenna are you using?
@@SalvatoreRaccardi I'm using an ESP32-C3-Mini-1
Nice video, thank you :)
Creative video,thanks :)
looks good...waiting for arduino support.....including CAN drivers
Yes, it could be useful for many IIoT apllications.
Learn any other info? Would this be a good choice for building a gauge cluster? I want to run a 4" round touchscreen for an offroad vehicle.
This chip is incredible and so is this development kit! So many benefits to this little thing for the price. Yes, it probably eats a lot of power and the stone itself is big compared to other models, but it gives you lots of ideas for projects.
I think it will be mainly targeted for HMI setups. Maybe also portable setups like barcode scanner applications for delivery jobs or local UI control for applications like Home Wizard. As soon as I get my hands on one of those dev boards, I will try to add support for it in ESPEasy, but that does require quite a big overhaul as I need to get rid of WiFi code and currently it will not build without WiFi code.
The chip itself is only some few dollars. Power consumption is unknown to me, but given the other chips running without wifi is rather low power it can't be THAT bad. The screen itself is likely to dominate it all! Camera with some smarts in (camera to ethernet/usb) including video overlays and video encoder, touchscreens with slow link toward the rest of the system, many options.
👍🏻
Nice! Will the schematic be published?
After the fundraiser, all schematics will be open source.
Very nice idea. I was checking the Kicad schematics today. Very nice schematic layout as well. Some question remains for me: Why did you change the Mosfet from NTNS... to the DMG3415? And why did you include a LDO for the BME680 at all? It runs fine with 3V and is also internally compensated so no drift with a depleading battery. For Low power it doesnt really matter but its one more part. Thanks for making it open source!
Hi! I changed the mosfet only because of availability. I added the LDO to the BME680 because I wanted to do some additional tests.
@@SalvatoreRaccardi thanks you for the answer! Did you ever get to incorporate the BME and used the door sensor as a environmental sensor as welll?
