My Top 5 RPGs of All Time
While RPGs are my favorite genre and in total I have the most hours spent playing them, I was surprised to find out while making this video that in total I don't even have 10 favorite RPGs. I'm just *that* picky with my RPGs, lol.
Hope you enjoy my little discussion about why these 5 are my favorites, as well as the extra honorable mentions at the end. Let me know the RPGs you love in the comments!

Why The Starter Town in Dragon Age: Origins is WEIRD
Переглядів 28 тис.14 днів тому
I've wanted to do a deep-dive video into Dragon Age lore/story/worldbuilding for a very, very long time. But I had too many choices and never knew what to focus on for my first such video. After watching some really cool videos by @Takarias about the starter towns in the Elder Scrolls games, I suddenly had an idea to talk about the village of Lothering from Dragon Age: Origins, and how it both ...
Dorian Mage Build Guide (Dragon Age: Inquisition) - B-Tier Guides
Переглядів 49721 день тому
I finally got back to making the Dragon Age: Inquisition build guides. Starting the year with Dorian, my favorite mage companion in DAI! Builds for this game are harder to create, mostly because you just have way less options than in Origins, and this feels especially limiting for mages who used to have many more spells available to them. Still, I’m doing my best to make each mage companion bui...

So I'm giving him a redo (and Morrigan's build will also come soon)! It's been almost a year since I started posting videos on this channel. Straight guy here, I like to see both sides of arguments but I appreciate you as a Trans person to make a video criticizing this game. Most “normal” people really don’t care if a character is LGBTQ+ etc. We just care that that the story is well written and the characters are cool. When you make a character and all they are is their sexuality with 0 depth I’m glad to see everyone hating that on either side.

THIS is why I love your vids. You *get it* !! You're one of the few content creators I've seen who understands that a game can be objectively *terrible* in some aspects, yet still a game you love enough to sink hundreds of hours into. I love all the games you mentioned, but yeah.. DA:O is just a really special game. It's my all time favourite too. The idea that players never see the end seems to be becoming more and more of an excuse for studios to echo the cry of "players want short games", which drives me bonkers. I LOVE long assed games... BUT they have to be good games. Sure I may not complete them, but that doesn't mean I won't sink many, *many* hours into them. Skyrim is one, hundreds of hours and never finished it. While they barely qualify as an RPG, AC:Odyssey and Valhalla are two more - Played both for many dozens of hours and never completed either. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy every *single* playthrough though! Doesn't mean I don't sink dozens more hours (and sometimes more *money* ) on every subsequent playthrough either. I just wish more studios would understand that it's the *quality* and the *choice* that matters.

    • @btiermutineer
      @btiermutineer День тому

Exactly, games can't really be fully objectively "good" or "bad" since ultimately it's up to the player to say whether they enjoy it or not. But absolutely, it's a matter of quality, and offering players the choice to engage with as much or as little of the content as they want. The big money people, however, seem to be content with removing as much "optional" content as possible because they don't understand that even if you don't pick a certain choice, the simple fact that it's *there* matters and makes the time you spend with the game feel more meaningful and enjoyable.

Favorite RPGs would be hard for me - it's pretty much the only genre I will actually play. - I will say KoToR (Disagreed with most of the premise of 2 and am not a fan of Avellone's work) - Jade Empire (Still waiting on 2... it will never happen, but I can dream dammit * counts for KoToR) - Fable + 2 (Count them the same) * Fable 3 is not good; Fable 4 may end up the same... - Final Fantasy 9 (It was my first, and most enjoyed) - Mass Effect Trilogy (Less 3 - And I'm not sure I count 2 as an RPG but it's a continued story) - Ego Draconis (Getting through the beginning dragon part is a PITA - but it's a genuinely good story) - Dragon Age Origins (I almost don't want to count this - too obvious) - Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (Yes, I date myself badly here... I'm perfectly okay with it) - Morrowind, Oblivion (I know how to make myself God in those games - a lot easier than Skyrim exploits) - Witcher 2 (Tried 1, didn't finish - I hate playing on PC, tried 3 & got bored by the island section so Act 3) Games I enjoyed but have not finished: - VTMB * Caveat: Legitimately finished = I have beaten it with the Cheats + Character Start screen buffing [Would be in my favorite RPG category except for a few points mechanically IE: No combat EXP, and Invincible Werewolf] - VTM Redemption = The Party AI is useless. Good game; decent story > AI is useless. - Final Fantasy 1-5 or 6 I believe (it's a collection) * I am not done with any game yet - Vampyr (Exp Caveat - the whole system is punitive, NOT fun) * Concept wasn't bad per say, but is bungled. - Baldur's Gate Series (The REAL Baldur's Gate Series...) - "Baldur's Gate" 3 (which factually isn't, but whatever. It's just D:OS with D&D5e paint) - KCD = Can't get past the needlessly stupid save system, or the reticle on the screen in combat... I'll own it. - Tyranny - Interesting concept; but you're basically evil middle management. It ends up not being fun and the magic system's not all it's cracked up to be. - The Fallout Series: For varied reasons, I have beaten New Vegas 1 time. I also beat Fallout 4. - Wasteland 3 (Too many counter intuitive skills + Companions that require skills to keep) ** I wanted to play the Werewolf one; but I really hate stealth mechanics, and apparently it wasn't good : ( * I did once get to the end of Kingdoms of Amalur before Re-Reckoning; and I can't say I actually enjoyed it. * I'm also not sure we're going to be able to properly call VTMB 2 an RPG. Or at least not my sort...

For those who are interested in Blood Magic, Blood Sacrifice is an excellent spell because of two reasons: - It's the only non-regeneration healing that isn't reduced while blood magic is active, meaning you can keep blood magic on even if you need a heal - It defies natural law, healing for way more than it steals, giving you enough life back to cast a heal on your tank and end up with more health than you started with for both parties

I viewed Alistairs leaving the party very differently. Ferelden is a deeply medieval-inspired setting in which Alistair embodies the knight archetype: an idealist who believes in honour and loyalty to the crown. Loghain has committed the worst possible, most unforgiveable crime in a world like this: treason against the crown. What Loghain did goes against his deepest sense of morality. On top of that, Alistair sees the order of the Grey Wardens as something highly honourable despite it all. Giving Loghain, who committed the worst possible sin, such an incredibly honourable position goes against his very morality. So no, not just a personal issue or childish outburst imo.

Not sure what my top 5 would be, but I'll rattle off 5 games that I know would be in contention - Baldur's Gate 1 - The first real CRPG I played. Having come from playing the TTRPG, it was insane to see D&D so thoroughly adapted to the PC. Planescape: Torment - If BG1 was the mechanical translation to PC, Planescape was the storytelling translation to PC. Icewind Dale - Yeah, I have a thing for the Infinity Engine games. IWD continued BG's great adaptation, only allowing you to make your full party, and in such a great campaign setting. Baldur's Gate 3 - Weird that I'm skipping part 2, because it was possibly the best of all worlds, it's just that BG1 and BG3 broke ground with me. Neverwinter Nights - Not so much the included game, but the world building toolkit. A couple of my friends, and I, built a dedicated world and ran it for a couple years. It had a DM mode, so you could log in, and DM the players that were on at the time. The first 4 games were great player experiences, NWN was a great DM experience.

One of my favorite RPGs is KCD, bc the role-playing aspect is different from other works in the genre. Since you're only a peasant (well commoner) your decisions don't influence the story, however, the role-playing is focused on the gameplay. You can roleplay Henry to be a brute, an honorary knight, a scoundrel who steals and assassinates, or even a silvertongued diplomat who solved everything through dialogue and only has to kill 1 person in the entire game. The stats are also part of the roleplay. Instead of getting +1 attack or something when you level Axes or Swords you instead become more apt with those weapons. This translates to Henry having a bigger window of opportunity to block, parry or attack without himself being parried; and you can see how that window changes depending on the enemy skill. You can kill 3 bandits without breaking a sweat, but a single knight in the optional tournament will have you fighting for your life. There's even a poison that lowers enemy skills so you can have an easier time against them and you can definitely notice the difference in skill before and after you draw first blood and affect them with the poison. Outside the main story there is some role-playing in the side quests. So you decide how to proceed in all kinds of things, from helping or persecuting a cathar family, a scooby doo like murder and cover-up, heists with your childhood friends, helping your former neighbor who's now accused of heresy, etc. Ofc this has its drawbacks, the bow is really hard to use until you get to level 10 lol

Oblivion is, yes, my favorite game of the series. And yes, I've never gone through the main plot. And here's Amalur... Every time, the question arose why should I deal with NPCs. They meet me and talk to me like I'm their best friend. "Dude, who are you? Why should I give a shit?" - so I can't say that this game is written at least somehow well.

I'd still recommend Mass Effect 2 to people. I replayed the trilogy recently and its pacing was rough and the gameplay was less satisfying than 1 or 3, but something is just nailed with the atmosphere and character moments that just feels so right. KotOR2 is known to many as a buggy mess, but I was lucky enough that I really didn't have an issue with that when I played. It has an amazing story with themes and deconstructions that challenged my world views and actually helped me grow as a person when I first completed it as a teen. Not to mention the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. I swear the whole game gave me a love for melodrama. KotOR1 is always a classic, but I'd tell people to play 2 10/10 times if they wanted something unique or to understand me better through my favorite media. DAO ended up being an amazing experience for me, and I'm just starting Inquisition, but I think 2 is going to end up staying my favorite. I appreciated it being such high drama in a not so big kingdom over the large scale quests I'm used to seeing for many adventures. I also LOVE the aura of the whole game being like an interrogation retelling by Varric. The art, atmosphere, combat, and narrative had me hooked for 45 hours for my first playthrough. Some weaker characters compared to other Bioware games, but all still very unique and not detracting from the ones I grew to like most

13:25 I recently did my first playthrough and am still in denial of Duncan. Such a cool character with great presence. I thought for sure it was a fakeout and he would come back for a big moment later and he just never did. Between that, my first "companion" being Mouse, how the Jowan storyline played out, and then being unable to return to Ostagar or Lothering, the game really set the tone that nothing is forever in that world and the cues I'm used to in other media making a lot of plot developments predictable really didn't apply. I was charmed by how unique the plot was all across compared to every other game, movie, or book I've experienced up to then

The Witcher 3 I haven't finished Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate 3 yet, but they both have a high chance of making the top 10.

I still have to finish playing the banner saga trilogy. It's been sitting in my closet for years. Same with Disco Elysium

Have you played Enderal at all? I went into it not really expecting much, but the writing and characters blew me away! It’s got kind of a dark fantasy vibe like DA:O

NIce, here is my list: 1. Pathfinder Kingmaker it's not perfect but it is one of the better TTRPG to Video Game conversions that I have seen. 2. Dragon's Dogma 2, it's large it's slow, you have to walk to places, but you are in the world. And the world goes on with or without you. If you get a quest and people are like "it's urgent" and you forget about it because you picked up 2 other quests and come back to in in 2-3 in game weeks the kid that was abducted by wolves, yea he's dead. Choice here mostly comes down to your action there are multiple ways to solve a ploblem how you do it is the choice not just text screens. 3. Mass Effect 2 greate dialog and makes you want to do side stuff to be as ready for the end game as posible. 4.Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines, I like vampiers, you can be a vampire nough said. 5. Skyrim, everyone has played it even my cat and I do come back to it over and over again sometimes with mods sometimes without and I put limits on myself. Okay and now some random recomendations (ones that wern't in your video): Star Wars KOTOR 1 and 2 it's Dragon Age but with light sabers Jade Empire, it's Dragon Age but with kung fu Mount & Blade: Warband or Mount & Blade: Bannerlord it does not matter which they are basiclly the same game with a nicer cote of paint on Bannerlord. Overlord + Riising Hell, a good alround rpg with some minions to boot around and you can be the Bad Guy or the "Bad Guy". Not a traditional RPG but it fits the bill

Great list. here is mine, 1.pillars of eternity 2 deadfire 2.Kotor 2 3. baldur's gate 2 4. dragon age origins 5. baldur's gate 3 While i do love dragon age origins and i do think its the best made of the series. there are definitely a lot of issues with the pacing and gameplay that prevents me from putting it in my top 3. 1. instability w/o mods 2. pace killers of the fade and deep roads 3.unbalance gameplay between mages vs non-mages makes having 2 mages in your party drastically improve your effectiveness when playing on harder difficulties(while it does make sense for the lore, it makes having a non-mage warden main upside being just the well written origin backgrounds prologues)

Any review that has oblivion with better story than Morrowind is going to get my hackles up. Morrowind may have valid mechanical complaints but the sheer quantity of story, lore, and dialogue is incredible, while also continuously keeping the theme consistent and the writing quality is so high, and certainly far higher than any other elder scrolls game.

@@MartinParslow the lore of Morrowind is indeed the best. The quality of its writing in terms of dialogue and quest design, however, isn't as good as Oblivion's. And I say this from the perspective of someone with a creative writing background. You can of course prefer Morrowind over Oblivion and that's perfectly fine (Morrowind is my partner's favorite game, actually). But I can't objectively compare the two games' quests and dialogue and put Morrowind on top. Again, as I said, you can have your subjective preference of Morrowind over Oblivion. But it's very weird to me that someone else's opinion "gets your hackles up", like no one ever said you have to have the same opinion? Chill

Loving the channel. If I could offer some advice you didn't ask for, consider putting the game you are talking about's music in the background when you talk.

Thanks! I did originally actually intend to add a bit of each game's soundtrack to the video when talking about each game, but I ended up not doing it this time around because I didn't have so many different game soundtracks handy and it would've taken too long.
