@@EpicPenguin5078 There is definitely a key sequence to get it to work. I don’t remember it at the moment, my manual is in Japanese so it doesn’t help much. Based on how difficult it is I think they were meant to be set up and then left alone except to scan. My unit only had about 20 freqs programmed into it. I do discuss how to access the banks and doing inputs so I might refer you to that section of the video for info.

@@KI4BZJ Thanks, I messed around with mine and found that once you have found the frequency you want to enter, you change the scanner to spot memory mode and them press the memory button and it saves that frequency, bandwidth and mode into the bank. Very weird way to do it but it works

@@papierecriture Yes, the DSP filters in the HF1000A have wider skirts which allow more signal in and make voice modes more intelligible. Listening to voice modes is less tiring and much richer than in the 8711A. If you are listening to voice modes in crowded bands then the wider skirts could be a liability since you’d have to narrow the filter width to isolate one signal from nearby ones. Of course digital modes are better/tighter using the 8711A. For DXing it would, as you say, depend on what your listening needs were.

@@jerseyjeeper1575 Thanks! Yrs, the U12 bandwidth upgrade for the WJ 8711A is sometimes available on eBay and other places. If you have the ‘A’ version of the 8711/HF1000 it is a direct replacement. It isn’t compatible with the ‘original’ versions of those radios though.

@@KI4BZJ Have you noticed any significant difference when using the demodulation modes, LL,LU,LIL,LiU, in the R&S EK896? I am interested in weak voice signals and mine has not got that option.

Thanks Matt! Yes, I like the sound of the Racal as well. Yes, I have an RG52a and a 53a. They are great machines once you get past the ‘free flowing’ main tuning dial. I’m used to a little drag when I turn the knobs!

@@dieselten01 Before the video I was favoring the WJ for voice modes, but after I have to say I really like the audio from the Racal! Still the WJ and R&S are more sensitive and can hear more signals. How’s that for skirting the question?😉

I absolutely agree. There are a number of different factors that can influence what is ‘the best’ radio. In the end I think the context of the signal (mode, DXing vs Program listening, personal audio presentation preferences) makes the choice of one ‘best’ pretty subjective. The right tool for the right job seems appropriate!

I don’t have any experience with the 8617a. I have two 8716s (HF only) and they are top notch. If the seller is being ‘snarky’ about whether the 8617 actually works it is a cause for concern. If he won’t provide a video session to show you that then you have to decide if you want to take the chance. If it works $500 is a very good price. If it doesn’t then at worst you have a spare parts rig, but not functional. If it does work I’d love to hear how it performs on HF and AM BC bands since the 8617 is a VHF/UHF radio (like the 8611).
