// ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Iris Smyth. I’ve navigated my own career change and know firsthand how stressful and overwhelming it can feel when you’re under pressure to find a new job fast. Through trial and error, I’ve learned that the path to success is rarely linear. Often it’s more about making smart, strategic moves that keep you moving forwards, even when the bigger picture isn’t clear yet.
Over the years, I’ve helped others take those same steps, guiding them to find roles that not only meet their immediate needs but also align with their longer-term goals. My focus is on practical, actionable advice because I believe that small, intentional steps can lead to big shifts.
I’m here to share the insights I’ve gathered along the way, helping you navigate this transition with confidence and clarity.

    What if you like lots of things but once you do it you get bored and want something else? I’ve done several businesses I like them all but feel like I want something different as soon as I establish the businesses.

    • @IrisSmyth

      Could potentially be because you’re more naturally drawn to initiating things - coming up with new ideas, creating something tangible from nothing? Some people prefer project work where they get to be involved in the first/initial phase of a project, and then hand it over to someone else to run or manage it once it’s off the ground. I don’t know if that applies to you, as I obviously don’t know you, but it’s a thought.

      Could potentially be a hobby - but it might not. Some people might want to take on a side or passion project, with the end game of turning it into either an extra income stream or their full-time gig.

    Thanks for this, Iris! This was helpful as well! "What can I control in this situation and then do next? (I fused your first two questions together because they seem to go hand-in-hand)" were really helpful. The only question I have though is you keep mentioning to network with people to land your next job that would like to have (or would be good enough at the moment as you mentioned in another video), but it will take a few months - what does one do when they don't have 3 months because they're unemployed and are going to need to re-establish an income somewhat quickly, rather than burn their savings, and they've already been looking for a few months as it is? Maybe another idea for a video presenting on that subject/situation ....??????

    • @IrisSmyth
      @IrisSmyth Місяць тому

      Thanks for another comment Patrick! Appreciate it. Yes, that's a great idea for a new video. I'm actually in the research/planning process for some new videos (I'm keen to upload videos on a more regular basis again), and will keep this in mind for one of the upcoming videos. But in the meantime, I would suggest you could consider for a 'good enough job' or a 'bridge job' to bring in some money, and potentially bridge into a new industry. The career change process is a journey, a marathon if you like, and not a sprint, and a good enough job or bridge job can give you the time to figure things out and break into a new field.

    Thank you, Iris, for this video! I'm trying to relocate from southern Pennsylvania to northern Virginia to be closer to my girlfriend, and I have been in teaching for the past 3 years and already feeling burnt out and looking into other interests now. I had to resign from my teaching position I just had due to the school board cutting it down to part-time, and now I don't have a job and have been looking for a few months. So, on a practical level, I need a job somewhat quickly (but not desperate), and this video has helped me to refocus on my priority right now, which is to get to VA. Once I'm there and have a job that is good enough for my needs and wants, I can give more time to informational interviews in my other areas of interest because I won't have to think about the practicality of an income while doing them!

    What is your advice if one has various jobs in different fields and broad education? Most hr prefer specialists but how to get a chance with that broad combination 😢.

    • @IrisSmyth
      @IrisSmyth Місяць тому

      Start by exploring these various jobs and different fields - you could connect and speak with people who do these kind of jobs, join new networks, seek educational opportunities (an online course could be a great starting point), or start a side project. The main goal is to learn more about these jobs and fields of work, as the reality is often different to what we might expect.

    Love this video! It is very important for any person to find something to strive for and fight for no matter what the circumstances. Once you set the right goal for yourself, making decisions will be easy and fun. What used to seem like an excruciating chore will turn into an enjoyable activity. Go where your labour will be needed! Go where there is money and where your work will be decently paid! Sooner or later you will have to co-operate with people of different nationalities and cultures. To make your business successful, you should learn a foreign language. I would like to recommend to you Yuriy Ivantsiv's workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips on learning foreign language". This book will help you to structure and organise your individual language learning process, will give you the opportunity to independently determine the methodology of language learning, which will become interesting and unburdensome. In this amazing book everyone will find a lot of useful information: how to learn foreign languages, how to memorise information, how to deal with culture shock, what to pay attention to when travelling to another country. I am convinced that the book "Polyglot Notes" should be in the bag of every business person, school and college student, and tourist. The most important thing is that the book gives a good motivation. Don't be afraid to do something to realise your dreams! If people realised that fears have no connection with reality, everyone would live a much better life. Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video. Your videos motivate me and give me new ideas!

    It’s my 35th birthday, and I’m unemployed and without any education besides junior high, because I was a hopeless addict for over a decade. I’m sober for 5 years now with no relapse and never going back, and I started working almost right away, in sales as a Account Manager, then got a promotion as a Sales Manager for a small team, and then I managed 4-5 clinics, without going into more details. I was happy for the first time in my life. I still am grateful, because I have a wonderful fiancé, money enough to keep us afloat, but I can’t seem to get a decent job. I am serious when I say that I have spent the last 2 years appying to over 1000 jobs, and been to almost 50 interviews, without getting anything that was of relevance for what I call "future". I sorely want to have my own apartment, get married and have a child with the woman of my dreams, but I can’t seem to figure out what to do. I lack experience in IT, and I am seriously depressed, because I know that I could go back to school, which scares the hell out of me, because that means 5 years without significant income. AND I feel like I’m not good at *anything* that could bring in an average income - which is a rough existence to live in. Any advice for a 35 year old feeling 60, but going nowhere? This is all too overwhelming, and I recognize that I am going through a serious life crisis.

    Thank you for the video. My quick summary that might help others: 1. Pay attention to things you are interested in/drawn to (find what interests + motivates you; don’t focus on a sole “purpose") - what would you love to learn more about? - brainstorm help: ua-cam.com/video/aQ6NlVbr79c/v-deo.html 2. Engage with your interests - try it out - Try 2-3 interests at a time to compare how you feel about them 3. Informational Interviews - Have others clarify the career & start networking once you isolated a career

      No specific topics that you like to listen to podcasts about? Or things that you like to have conversations about. Or things that you like doing? If really nothing comes to mind, I suggest you start suuuuper small by starting to notice what things you enjoy and draw your interest in daily life. Then you can build it from there. Knowing what you like and dislike, and what you're interested in is like a skill that you can develop, so please don't give up!

    I quiet quit for the last year and a half. They told me to go into the office, i didnt go and i still havent returned. They had a huge meeting in Dallas that everyone was required to attend, so i said i had a wedding and didnt go. I do bare min all day long and am still here 1 year later. Now, i probably will get fired sometime in the next 3 weeks because ive 'literally reduced my working hours to about 10-15 hours a week and now they are questioning me. Its been a nice year off. Ill see if i can get another 3 months out of this while they "build a case on me" in HR lol. Im loving every bit of it.

    I am struggling to decide if I should quit my job. To summarize my current situation: I had a stroke in march, and was later diagnosed with a burnout. Was on medical leave for only two and a half months and returned to my job 5 weeks ago. The reason for the burnout was 12 hour working days, working through weekends, holidays...7 people of the team I'm in were fired and not replaced in less than a year. I get along somewhat fine with my manager, several stakeholders and colleagues really appreciate me, I do feel overall very validated, but I am dreading going to work now. I used to give 300% everyday and now my whole body seems to be rejecting coming to work. I also don't really enjoy what I'm doing, even though I have good benefits and salary. I honestly just don't see where I can progress from where I'm standing either and the worst thing is I don't even care. I am getting more and more disconnected, but everytime I think of quitting I immediately feel like I'm being immature or irresponsible. What would be your best advice here?

      Hi! Only just reading your comment, so I appreciate this is a while ago now… hope you’re in a much better, and more tenable place right now. My advice would be to engage with a professional to help you through this, as it’s really hard for me to give you solid advice here in the comments section under a video (I say this from a place of compassion and love). I would suggest you engage with a medical professional with regards to your health (if you haven’t already done so), and a certified professional (ie a career coach) with regards to your work situation. I am the latter (a certified career coach), but I’m currently not taking on new clients. I will be launching an online career change course soon though, which you can read more about here: irissmyth.com/pivot-like-a-pro

      I'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like a tough situation. Could you perhaps do something outside of your job that gives you fulfillment, joy, or purpose? Some people find that if they actively pursue something that gives them this outside of work, they can actually cope with a job that they don't love (but that is also not making them miserable).

    Good to see you back! The points are very true. I quit a year ago from IT completely burned out and it was only about 5-6 months ago that I did some volunteering and met some people to chat after watching one of your previous videos. The only thing that truly clicked with me was clearly out of financial reach and I began to look for jobs in IT again. I only applied to one job in the public sector and after a successful interview, I actually found myself being excited about the job and that is because most of these values looked good and I realised that my burnout was caused by corporate jobs with a bad environment and my own negative reaction to them. So I would say I rather work in a career I don't feel much for with these values being positive and aligned to me than one I am passionate about where they are negative and not aligned.

      Hey ZubiForce! Thanks for the comment, and for the warm welcome back :) Really appreciate that. But more importantly.... You've HIT THE NAIL ON ITS HEAD. I couldn't agree more with you on rather working in a field of work you don't feel much for, but with the work environment being healthy, supportive, positive, and aligned, than working in a field that you're passionate about but with a misalignment of values and a toxic work environment. Glad to hear you got excited about work again and found a job with a good work environment!

    The goal is to get-a-job and build-your-career: not social-clubbing (that is so overly narcissistic).
