The Hereford and Gloucester Canal follows almost entirely rural course for 34 miles through the glorious countryside of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.
Work started in 1792 reaching Ledbury from Gloucester by 1798. In 1827 Steven Ballard was appointed to oversee the Canal's completion, which, reached Hereford in 1845; this was one of the last major canal routes competed and The canal stretched from the River Severn at Gloucester, via Newent, Dymock and Ledbury to Hereford, using 22 locks and 3 tunnels. It closed in 1881 to allow construction of the Led bury-Gloucester railway which then closed in 1964.
Currently active working sites at Aylestone Park, Kymin, Yarkhill, Monkhill, Ashperton, Dymock, Oxenhall, Malswick, Moat Farm, Over, Llanthony Lock.

Want to see what we've been doing at Malswick this summer? Watch this video. Then come to our OPEN DAY at 14:00 on Sunday 29th September. Bring your wellies! Background In the winter of 2023/24 we took delivery of a large volume of extracted, mostly clay, soil. This material was required to build up the low-lying land over the large culvert, but ground conditions meant we could not get it to wh...
Lifting a canal boat from the water at Over Basin, Gloucester
Переглядів 7636 місяців тому
Our workboat, Alder, is in need of some maintenance and had to come out of the water. Although it was only moving a few metres within our own property it would have required a large, expensive crane to conduct the movement in one lift. The solution was to lift the boat onto a trailer, move it across the site, and lift it off again. We contracted Russell Machinery Transport of Cheltenham to hand...

The Mountains of Malswick. What have we done, and WHY?
Переглядів 1,4 тис.11 місяців тому
Many people driving between Gloucester and Newent have noticed the large heaps of rubble and clay which have been deposited at our Malswick site. They are strictly temporary, and will be moved this Summer. But why have we done this? What is it for? This video provides some answers. Music from UA-cam audio library. Over Canal Basin Flooded. January 2024

Following a prolonged period of rain, in January 2024 water on the River Severn floodplain rose to overtop the canal at Over. Floodwater entered the canal at Vineyard Hill. On 5th January the towpath was submerged to a depth where even wellies were insufficient to get to the end on the Vineyard Hill section. This video was filmed on the following day, when the water had dropped about 6 inches /...

At Malswick, near Newent, Gloucestershire, a lot has changed in the last 20 months. In late 2021 we marked out the line of the canal across the fields. We started work on burying a field drain in a culvert. In 2022, with lots of help from KESCRG and WRG, we built a much larger culvert to take a small brook, and we got 2 sections of canal partially dug. In 2023 we have further dug these parts to...

In 2022 HGCT, with help from KESCRG Canal Recovery Group and Waterway Recovery Group (WRG), dug two parts of the new canal cut at Malswick. These sections were deliberately not taken to full depth and width while we let the ground settle and assessed the ability of the natural clay soil to hold water. This year we are working towards getting both these sections in water, and building up the gro...

Love it! Everyone from the Trust are in high Vis and quite often wearing hard hats.Yet the guys from Russel Machinery, who are actually doing the work "in danger", are just dressed in normal work gear (non high Vis etc).
It was the same when the Truxor was on the wilts and berks, everyone on the banks wearing high vis and life jackets and the guy on the boat in his work clothes 😂
I don't think it will work!
👍push the 👍 folks!
As an European viewer I very much appreciate that you use both, the imperial and metric units 🙂
Thank You. We try to use both when we remember. As well as being beneficial to our international viewers it also helps our home market. Many older British people were brought up on imperial units, while younger ones are often more familiar with the metric system.
@@hgcanal Thank you. I heard that on the canals the metric system was used instead of the imperial one by large....
Looks like a canal from nowhere, to nowhere!
Thank you for the update. Always good to be kept informed of progress. 😊😊
Nice to see the progress although it was quite some time ago. 😊😊
What are the chances of a bare root tree surviving when planted in august….
Fair point. Its not ideal timing. These trees were generously donated to us before we were really ready for them. To keep them alive they were temporarily planted along a fence line. Since then the fence has been removed, and they were now in danger of being damaged. Having moved them, we watered them each week during the hotter weather. We will see what happens in the spring. Fingers crossed.
May 2024 update. Of the 8 trees planted, 5 are looking very good. One is dead. The other 2 are not great, but are showing some signs of life.
As we near the end of August 2023 I'm looking back at some of the older videos. We've come a long way in 20 months.
👍👌👏
I feel confident that you will solve the problems soon.
Thank you for your words of encouragement. We are working steadily towards building the required embankment in the West. Material has to be added gradually and compressed to ensure that it is stable. Extention to the East will probably be postponed until the swing bridge is in place.
that's going to need a bit of work.🙃
Can I ask where did the lister pump get the water from to fill your new canal ?
It came from the brook which flows through the large culvert. This is fed from springs at May Hill, and flows all year round.
I just found this channel through watching Lichfield and Hatherton Canal videos. Great to have another canal restoration channel to watch.
Thank you. I've recently discovered Lichfield and Hatherton Canal through comments such as yours. It is good to see that canal restoration is thriving in different parts of the country. Mark
Yes, this is a beautiful section. Perhaps we ought to organise a beauty competition?
A beautiful section of canal and still in water!
Nice to see progress on the cut, but why is the green flashing light on when the operator of the dump truck is clearly not using his seat belt when standing clear of the machine ?
Thanks for pointing that out. We'll look into it.
So happy to see this coming along, a 30 y/o in NJ USA. Stumbled into here from "cruising the cut" and Tom Scott videos. Cheers!
They have done good work. It's funny how 200 years ago they got more done with less equipment in a smaller time frame. Ahh progress.
Yes - and how were they able to do that? By employing *THOUSANDS* of men, rather than a few dozen!
Brilliant
Thank You
You really ought to credit Mark too. He did an impressive job given that these were his first flights with a new device.
Thanks Richard. I'm one of the admins for the H&G UA-cam channel. I actually wrote the description! I have credited myself on the video.
@@MarkAtkin Ah, does this go down as 'my goof'?
I've now changed the description too.
Looking good! I can’t wait to come over and cover the section for you! How much more are you planning to do towards the football pitch? Same question for the other end towards the solar panels?
We are negotiating with the football club for a strip of their land, but immediately beyond that there is a minor road to cross. Heading East, we now own the next field connecting us to our Malswick East Woodland. We are carrying out environmental investigations in this area leading towards a planning application for another few hundred metres. After that we need to cross the busy B4215. Funding still needed for that, I believe.
@@hgcanal thank you for the answers :)
I look forward to the next presentation!
Thank you. Another aerial video showing before and after shots is coming soon.
Can I ask will this be joining/connecting to other canals
At the Gloucester end the canal originally connected to the River Severn. The river is navigable from Gloucester to the Midlands with connections to the Midlands canal network. Various options to reconnect to the river from our canal basin at Over are being considered.
Now I am retired I would not mind doing stuff like that....
Most canal projects are calling out for volunteers. Where are you based?
@@MarkAtkin I live in SE London but maybe moving to Alton to be near the mid hants railway. retirement means nothing but boredom so I often think of things like these....
The heritage railways are always looking for volunteers too. If you want to try canals, your nearest would be the Basingstoke Canal at Odiham. You could also check out the Waterway Recovery Group (WRG) summer canal camps.
Technology of today, flashing green light to show that the operator has the seat belt fastened, unless you have old machines with no computer onboard.
I wondered why they now had two flashing lights, a green and an amber. I never knew that's what the green light was for.
So lucky to have clay type soil that will hold the water. You must be saving a fortune on liners. Looking forward to seeing the canal progress.
Thank you. Yes, we are lucky. We have dug test pits along the next part and the soil there is different. We hope to have enough clay left over to use as a liner where we need to.
Will there be no further lining (like the bentonine) in the canal?
We are fortunate that the subsoil here is clay, and holds water. The next stretch will not be so easy. We hope to have enough clay left over to line areas that need it.
This is great another part of the canal done, just recently discovered the H&G Canal on youtube and look forward to more updates as the canal progresses, what I love about the canal's not only they're good for people to use , but also with the tow paths become walking / running places for local community and also great habitat for animals & aquatic species and of course Birds.
It is very much our intention to create a wildlife corridor and leisure facility for the local community.
Keep them coming!😀
A skid steer would probably speed up construction....
If you've got one to donate we'll have it!
Great to see the progress.👍
Yeay, Progress!
I can't help superimposing a few hundred old style Navies into the picture imagining all that being done by shovel and wheel barrow.
If you can supply a few hundred fit young volunteers, all with their own barrows and shovels, we could save on the machine hire. On the other hand, our retired professional excavator driver would be a bit upset.
@@hgcanal I'm retired and I now live in Thailand. I could easily get a few hundred young fit and enthusiastic guys and gals to do the work. But they wouldn't be granted visas for the UK, and they would need flights if they were. They typically get $10 a day here. There are lots of canals in Bangkok. Many are used for public transport with quite large and fast 30 KM/hr boats. When some of the less used sections get a bit overgrown thousands of volunteers turn out to clear them. I'm sure we could find a distraction for you driver.
Great to see. Hope it was a Lister engined pump.
I'm there again this Tuesday. I'll find out for you.
Yes, it is a Lister.
This is great to see.! Thanks for posting... real progress for all to see - well done to everyone involved.! I also follow the Lichfield and Hatherton too; been a great week for canal restoration progress videos 😃👍💪😎
Thank you.
Fantastic to see and hours after Litchfield and Hatherton canals Trust produce a similar video ! Congratulations and thanks to all involved in both projects.
Thanks. I've just checked out the Litchfield and Hatherton video.
This is awesome I love seeing the process of restoring canals
A part of the Lichfield restoration was re-watered this week as well.
@@johnarnell4241 I'm in Australia so I love coming across all these video's about canal's being restored, so much positivity comes from it esp for local people and wildlife and aquatic species
Thank you.
Magic to see this taking place. I lived in Gloucester for six years between 1977 and 83 and I had absolutely no idea that there had been either canals going across the Cotswolds or one going to Hereford!
It is not really surprising that you hadn't heard of us. The H&G Canal Society (forerunner of the current trust) was not formed until 1983. More information here if you are interested. h-g-canal.org.uk/about-the-trust/
@@hgcanal Thanks - I love Gloucester and Hereford is wonderful, having a canal link will be glorious!
you are making new canal???
Hello, it is part of the restoration of the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire canal that will give us 600 metres of restored canal.
Some expert compaction around the small culvert chamber, if I do say so myself :)
Great work gals and guys! I have included a link to this video in the latest video in my H&G canal series on my channel, as well as in my Facebook Group.
Thank you.
This is so exciting as I know the canal route very well.A lot of the canal is filled in between Hereford and Ledbury.
Thank you. A lot of it is filled in at the Gloucester end too. Like much of the route between Gloucester and Ledbury, this section at Malswick was replaced by the Ledbury and Gloucester Railway.
Wow, that's really taking shape now!
Thanks. Still a lot of earth shifting to do to get the rest of the site level. There won't be water in this stretch for a while.
So how high will the canal be at this point? Do you neen to build concrete walls around the culvert to avoid canal breach?
There will not be concrete walls. The canal will be built on an embankment at this point. Much of the material for this embankment will come from digging out the canal at a high point. Further videos are coming soon showing progress on this.
couldn't the bricks be saved and reused later?
I share your concern. We do prefer to salvage bricks for reuse whenever it is praticable. In this case there were relatively few in good condition. We had expensive equipment on hire so it was just not economical to spend time sifting through tonnes of material.
@@hgcanal thanks for the explanation!
