My name is Ash - I've been passionate about aquariums since I was 7 years old. I started with goldfish and freshwater tanks as a child, and over the years, I've transitioned to saltwater and back to freshwater about three times. I have an equal love for all things aquatics and believe that freshwater and saltwater shouldn't be in competition. To me, both are very similar yet uniquely different, each offering its own fascinating aspects and challenges.
Currently, I maintain a 400-gallon saltwater coral reef aquarium, and my future project involves creating a beautiful planted tank. Join me as I dive into the captivating world of aquariums, sharing tips, experiences, and the wonders of both freshwater and saltwater systems.

Also on skimmer I played with the pump speed and air....smaller speed smaller bubbles skimmer works bettet
Yea I heard on another podcast about skimmer height and return flow. I put a skimmer platform under my skimmer so height was right skimmer dialed in better cause water at right height. I had originally had my returns coming out from overflow forming a triangle one side higher than other and couldn't get my nitrates below 25 to 50. I heard that flow might be blocking water column from reaching weir in overflow I moved it a little went down to 10 to 25 moved them some more now in 1 to 2 range. I had also heard a podcast on foods. Nori raises phosphates alive brine. But not as much as flake or pellet. I feed frozen mysis and cut down on live brine some and nori as an occasional treat.phosphatesin .15to .25
Saltwater that’s cool
I do not have a skimmer, no mechanical filtration, and do not do water changes and have a pristine fully stocked SPS dominated tank. I use carbon dosing and bacteria to manage the nutrients that the coral do not uptake. I use All for Reef for major and minor elements. More gear more problems and more instability. Let your water test and your tank tell you what gear that you need.
Man tell this to my algae scrubber
@iceicetimmay i have to admit ATS may replace a skimmer but they have to be more affordable for majority of ppl to use them. The one I build is a monster
This has been disproven. Overfeeding or overstocking your tank might necessitate a protein skimmer. I run filter socks, don’t overfeed and have a refugium in my sump full of chaeto with great success. Two different paths to the same result. Reef tanks are like people, everyone is unique and requires different things.
Not true, lots of reefers do NOT use a skimmer with great success... What is required , skimmer or not, is regular waterchanges.
Much better thumbnail man. 👍🏼👍🏼😂
Plenty of nice tanks out there with no protein skimmer. What works for others might not work for you and vice versa.
This is true. You could also have a house with no toilets. But why? 😂
True, its possible, Julians Sprungs tank comes to mind, but he has the ecosystem that can process all those NO3/PO naturally... I just think for me I have seen the effect of going skimmer less vs skimmer on the same system and the fish do alot better so I would recommend it for most hobbyist that tend to overstock/overfeed. Thanks for your commend
I did not know that
I disagree sorry if u keep a small or right amount of fish u don’t need a skimmer. Just watch BRS TV it’s been proven over many times
Took my nitrates down also flow to weir can reduce nitrates. I have sand with perth snails sand sifting starfish and urchins in cleanup crew. As well as turbos trocus and hermit ctabs i also does pods and ampods refularly as well as chaeto in refugium
Can you elaborate on the reducing your nitrates by increasing flow to the weir? I have gotten my NO3 down from 300PPM+ to 50PPM in 8 months. It was a hard process that I can finally create a video for now.. But I did the following, added 100lbs remote sand bed, stopped feeding shrimp, upgraded return pump (turnover), removed 5 turbos, added a ATS, and started dosing Vodka.
Use socks wash daily with bleach then do a water xycle with ni bleah to rinse socks i use washing machine to clean socks i also went to 100 micron socks
😂🎉
Thumbs down for the lame thumbnail. The woman wasn’t in the video, so why is she there. It’s just not necessary or appropriate.
@TrevorHiller Because she is Prettier than me 😉
@@TrevorHiller I may change it. You got me feeling bad. 😢
Reef dork had a whole discussion on this very topic on a live stream. It was clickbait feeling and back fired on him. Just keep the channel professional because you do a good job.
@TrevorHiller dude I copied him and thought it was worth a shot
What about a Tomani tang?
Yellow tang not a good option anymore as the price has gone crazy after the Hawaii shutdown. Kole tang would be my best choice as a good first tang to add.
@Bfamreef I know they used be readily available but I think a tank raised one would be worth waiting for. the price of $200 seems steep, but they just seem to survive for years compared to other tangs.
@AquariumSurge oh I'm not saying your wrong I have 2 and love them. Most tangs live quite a long time all mine are over 10 years old now. But a great option back when they were $30. Now at $200+ I'm not sure it would be my pick at that price point. Blue or yellow eye kole tang are about $70. And I find them to be just as long lived. Your video is aimed to the newer reefer and I would never advise a $200 fish to someone just starting out.
@Bfamreef yeah I know the prices and availability of all fish are impossible. I really need to find a copper band or fire fish for aiptasia control but it's not an easy find
Do you need a protein skimmer for a 15 gallon tank?
@phalbaby16 you could get away with not having a skimmer, but if it was me id find away to add a small hang on the back filter with a small skimmer... main reason is I hate waterchanges and without a skimmer you would need to do big ones more frequently. Plus who wants to let there nutrients rise rapidly between waterchanges just to be diluted again. Using a skimmer really helps keeps chemistry stable. Doing big waterchanges will also not help stability
I just sub to your channel. I would not worry about the protein skimmer on your system. Just get good at the other concepts I mentioned and plan for a skimmer when you upgrade. Happy reefing 😊
Nice hopefully I can get one
@deepalpatel4015 I think your going to be a Rockstar in this Hobby!! You have the passion
How is ba dada and baby
We gave baby away yesterday
@@AquariumSurge noooooo
I will miss baby
Nice
What happens if the whole tank is infested with aptasia
Once they start reproducing and nothing is eating them they will take over and sting fish and kill corals like zoa.. its a pain! My tank is starting to become like that since all my peppermint shrimp have died. so i need to find a fish to eat them.
I heard sea slug (berghia nudibranch) only eat aiptasia
I went back to a Kalk stir. I got tire of cleaning the dosing lines from pushing Kalk. Stir just water. I use the BRS too,, Black Friday buck every couple years. Audio was fine
Dosing it as an ato is a bad idea. You can spike your alk.... Dosing over time through a dosing pump with a PH controller is a better way to do it.
How funny lol😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sorry about the Audio Guys! I will get better only if you give me 100 likes😆
... at 7:10, you said your nitrates are 300ppm !!!!! Is that correct, or were you meaning to say 30ppm ?
Yes 300ppm+... After 8 months long battle finally got them down to 50ppm. Crazy part was waterchanges alone did not help but had to carbon dose, add a scrubber, added a remote sand bed, and removed some turbos....Multiple large waterchanges and finally got a result last night at 50ppm
you could also pass a pipe or tube of a closed loop through the substrate
@andibandi1190 yeah I definitely could use some flow on the bottom. Only thing that's holding me back is I don't want to look at those pipes. Maybe ones things are grown in it won't matter
@@AquariumSurge I had a Jaubert System with 4+ inch substrate, so the tube was well hidden and never shoved up🤡
Boy, what are you doing in this video you are stretching with a pipe
That was funny
Ick free tanks are possible, all mine are. My Achilles and tang gang appreciate it. I did tank to tank transfer and CP. it was a massive effort.
Thats amazing! Do you have a Hippo tang? I have a theory that these guys are Ich holders🙄
Good info in this video. How did you mount the canopy over the tank? Is the tank holding all the weight of the canopy and lights? Thank you.
The front two corners are holding the weight and the back is bolted to the wall
How do the anemone just...appear in the tank??
They can survive a nuclear bomb! They come on LR and coral bases. Honestly I QT every single coral to avoid them.. and somehow my QT has none but they found a way in the tank.. I feel they can remain invisible for months and months before showing themselves.
@AquariumSurge do you quality test with clean water or tank water? That might affect them coming out. Maybe a qt when you do a water change and use the dirty water if you aren't already. (Less than minimum knowledge in this field, I'm just guessing and throwing hypotheticals)
@@rampagent9226 The QT has always had its own water bc my main system has high nutrients I never could use it for QT. I feel the zoas from my old system must have brought them in somehow,, I am not sure how there must have been slime somewhere but its not a big deal really, having aiptasia is part of the hobby😁Aslong as I dont have any coral parasites I am good
They look beautiful such a shame
Yes they look great until you have 1000s
to anyone reading: when you mix sodium hydroxide, there is a exothermic reaction that causes heat and fumes. the fumes can be harmful if inhaled.
The "fumes" are actually just steam, if you're just using NaOH. Where you'll find more dangerous volatiles is with mixed chemicals (like drain cleaners, etc)... Some things are designed to react cause intense reactions on contact with water. Always good to read labels
@@agxryt First batch I made i think it lost its potency so now just going to mix it and use it within 1 week. I believe using it right after mixing when its steaming destroys aiptasia even when they close up.
Yeah 100% don't recommend this to as a first things.. However, its the only thing that works and actually kills everything to the bare rock.. I think it could be useful for certain areas in the tank with algae issues.
@@AquariumSurge it might have, the water in NaOH solutions react with CO2 in air over time, to form carbonic acid (H2CO3). Then the HO ion (the base, from the lye) steals a proton (an H) from carbonic acid, making H20, bicarbonate ions (HCO3+) and sodium ions (Na-). Your aqueous sodium hydroxide slowly becomes aqueous baking soda (which is a much weaker base). Best to do it fresh!
@@AquariumSurge I was totally surprised to see you do it. I don't really know aquariums, but from watching your stuff, they seem pretty temperamental. Life usually prefers acidic environments too.
My uncle is right
How is “lye, caustic soda, and drain cleaner” FOOD GRADE?!!? 👀 🌈🪬
Kind of wild! They use it for Pretzels and other foods..
Because it's used in so much stuff. Calling it a "chemical", while true, might be a bit misleading. It's just sodium bound to hydroxide (HO), they separate into sodium and hydroxide ions in water... But both of those are already minor components of water, as "minerals", and all the hydroxide ion wants to do is pair up with a free hydrogen, to become water. (It's just kinda aggressive about it) It's basically hyper-concentrated mineral water. Which is dangerous, but It's also the original ingredient of soap (aside from the fat). It's used constantly in production, to neutralize acids. It's used to make pretzels, various Chinese dishes. We used to get it from wood ash, in the old days. It's literally everywhere, including in your body. Look at ingredients lists, you'll find it in so many things. Tl;dr it's a "harmful chemical" in the same way that salt is a harmful chemical - in high concentrations. Albeit, quite a bit more feisty.
they also use it to make handmade soap. a reaction called 'saponification' occurs when a water/lye mix is added to an oil - the chemical reaction makes soap
Hell yeah! Been waiting for this to come to a head.
Thanks for watching 😄
How do you manage low phosphates
I am dosing Phosphates continuously via Ecotech versa pump. I checked them two weeks ago they were .06ppm. If I stopped dosing they bottom out. Acros tend to look more vibrant when they are 0 but the zoas and acans are an instant indicator phosphates have bottomed out. They do not like to open up when it bottoms out
Maybe I'll make a video soon on carbon dosing with Phosphates. I purchased Phospahate from Amazon for $10 and honestly it may last a lifetime 😆
Powder Blue killed majority of my fishes, so I'm a bit scared to get it again
Hmm. Only fish I added after the tangs was the chromis and none of my tangs bothered them. I think if I added another medium size fish they would probably kill them
Everybody needs a place to hide around Blue, caves and crevices. Defensible positions.
Very nice. I can't keep a tang to save my life.
How big is your tank? Honestly I feel Yellow and Purple tangs are bullet proof since they can do well in smaller tanks. The Powders, clowns, achilles, aka acanthurus species are difficult because they need a larger system and really good diet and flow.
@@MrShishi 100%
How do you treat the lateral line ? My hippo had it for almost few months now, thank you!
depends how bad it is. My yellows got it in a holding tank after 2 years and really took a permanent beating. The purples I didn't do anything special just made sure I fed them good and they healed pretty quickly. Make sure your using good carbon and rinsing it good
@@AquariumSurge and IMO, beware GFO, granular ferric oxide. At least keep it in the back of your mind if all else fails and u use it. Agree with Mr. Surge’s advice. Good water, nori daily, and time. (No GFO for me personally, suspect it could contribute)
Awesome Tang family. My luck with chromis is if you have at least one fish that picks on them. Then they should band together and watch out for the more aggressive fish. I have had 5 in my 75 for about 2 year’s now. The dottyback chases them every time he see them 😂 I don’t think I’m putting any in my 180.
It’s OK I’ve had to deal with piranhas
Are you subscribed?
I think I am done with chromis bc of the cost. I would probably consider 5 anthias in the future
That’s my uncle

How would you use a bandsaw to make those cuts?
Not sure just feel with smaller cutts a wet saw maybe safer
GG on the click baiting, probably good content, but marked do not recommend regardless.
No Problem...No hard feelings 😁
I changed the thumbnail. Thanks
