My name is Ash - I've been passionate about aquariums since I was 7 years old. I started with goldfish and freshwater tanks as a child, and over the years, I've transitioned to saltwater and back to freshwater about three times. I have an equal love for all things aquatics and believe that freshwater and saltwater shouldn't be in competition. To me, both are very similar yet uniquely different, each offering its own fascinating aspects and challenges.
Currently, I maintain a 400-gallon saltwater coral reef aquarium, and my future project involves creating a beautiful planted tank. Join me as I dive into the captivating world of aquariums, sharing tips, experiences, and the wonders of both freshwater and saltwater systems.

I used a Dremel on MY NEW CORALS for Pest Control
Hey, i know this is completely unrelated but would it be possible to make a saltwater aquarium with only invertebrates (not including corals or other stationary filter feeders, as i believe i would not be skilled enough and prefer algae anyways.)
Yeah of course.. search mangrove aquariums..Honestly some corals are not that difficult to keep alive aslong your following a few principles like making sure the water your adding is 100% pure (slacking here will lead to a build up of bad things overtime and cause issues). In the begining you may not feel motivated to test frequently so just stick to at least 25% waterchanges every month. Once your confident in your husbandry try a leather coral..They tend to be very new hobbyist friendly and look amazing. especially the neon toadstool leather coral. good luck
Curious if you seal the Kalk container air tight to keep potency. When you are dosing how does it not try to cave in as you would have a vaccume. As liquid goes out air would need to replace the space?
Yes I keep it that way for potency. Interesting thing you mentioned didn't really think of that. I do notice the drip rate changing from now and then so maybe the air is slowly going back from the dosing line. Either way it can be 100% airtight since 30 gallons of air has to find its way back into the container
I'm dealing with the same problem just like you. My nitrates jumped to over 200 ppm and 11 months later I got it below 50 ppm.
Glad you got it down.. It was a pain and time consuming dealing with this but made me a better hobbyist. I stopped bringing it down when I was around 30-50 but now ramping it up to get it down to 10PPM, which could take a few months. I feel my NO3 its too high compared to my Phosphates. Red field ratio is off so i still get a lot of annoying algae patchs. Hopefully when its at 10 it should compliment my Phosphates, which are around .10 PPM. I think the red field ratio is accurate since I had absolutely zero algae when my Phosphate and Nitrates where out of control high at equal proportions. When i started bringing the Phosphates down first than i got alot of excessive algae growth that the snails and fish could not keep at bay. Crazy how things in proportion = faster growing corals and coralline algae instead of hair algae.
You know 🤔… in the right situation, you could run the pipes through a wall and mount a box outside. It’s out of sight, out of the way, no lights, timers, or wires/outlets. Just let the sun do the work. 😎
Hahaha. I love that idea
Do they have ember tetras
I don't recall seeing them but maybe
That closed loop is awesome. Great video, it really got me considering something similar.
Is this like a Carson surge device? I like it a lot.
Kind of yeah...I think my closed loop being on reef creast mode were it goes from very low flow to 100% within a instant is similar to a carson surge device. I think the carson surge device is great for large aquaculture facilities but with the invention of DC variable pumps it really doesnt make sense unless your talking 10K+ gallons of water. I believe my flow provides better flow than any carson surge device.
Just a tip ive seen for freezing and separating stuff like this. When you flatten itbin the back run the back side of a knife ober the bag in a grid pattern roughly the size you want the squares to be this will make it easier to break into small pieces once frozen
@@ashrowan2143 That's an amazing Tip. Thanks
Geo’s Reef is the best Kalk reactor in the business! Hands down. That and paired with my GHL P4 dosing it every hour. 🤌🏽
Are you using c02 scrubber in addition to kalkwasser?
No but I Have an air exchanger in my basement
@@AquariumSurge which unit? I’ve been looking into getting one of these.
I am not sure. Some lady had a old but Never used unit and she let me have it for cheap. Its pretty powerful
My Avast Marine kalk stirrer stays on 24/7
I love all for reef for my dosing
Why would a beginner go all out… StartEd the video off wrong
I just wanted to make a video on all the items that are needed to start a saltwater tank. I think I covered it best I could.😊
It’s a hot or miss with petco but I notice going to a saltwater lfs is better because petco fish be a little over priced and majority of the time they selling you sick fish! Its a must to quarantine anything you buy from them
Good video dude. I just got everything i need to start dosing during the lights off period. Will be using a Kamoer slow doser along with a ph controller to dial it in. Wish me luck!
Punching the air rn because I barely setup a new 120 with vca random flow generators
@Reefdode they restrict alot of flow. I know because i have to adjust my ball valve on my drain after replacing them with something less restrictive
Dude that closed loop is amazing. Sea swirls really seem to be making a comeback!
I wish more people would use them, but their bulkiness and high cost make them impractical for most, especially with open-top rimless systems where aesthetics are important. That said, I know that most reefers, regardless of experience, would agree that they’d add them without hesitation if possible. These devices create an ideal combination of variable and chaotic water movement, perfectly complementing other forms of circulation in the tank
After listening to a talk from Jake Adam’s, I decided to go with gyre flow. His point was that water will actually gain momentum as it gets consistently pushed, it pulls water from other areas and in a paper he published it showed that it will force water through small crevices that are hard to reach in colonies. I use 2 tunes 6095 and a Nero 3 on a 100 gallon. One powerhead turns on every 15 minutes and the other one goes off. I can watch the flow turn around and cause a “one way” wall of water rather than a jet stream
IMO gyres give the best flow pattern, but I’ve heard they are a pain in the a** to maintain clean.
@@lukaivic5790 They certainly are! A few years back, I used vinegar to clean my two MaxSpect gyres, That was per the video advice given by Carlos of CoralVue. Eventually the magnet burst open on both units, Coralvue wanted to charge me 3/4 of what I paid for the unit for repair. I recently built a false bottom reef tank and it's finally beginning to take shape. It's a 22 long and I've got two Tunze 6040s, two Sicce Nanostreams, two Sicce XStream 5000s and two ReefBreeder Nautilus 900 return pumps. It sounds like a lot, but with the false bottom, I can alternate the flow - clockwise or counterclockwise. Too much flow is never enough! Thanks for sharing your tank and sorry to ramble on...
@@lukaivic5790 They're really not honestly, we frequently clean them in the marine store I work at. We just take the rotor and cages off, go at it with a brush, done within 5 minutes each. Once a month we take off the entire thing and give a good deep cleaning.
I'm love DIY and I plan to make my own scrubber. Great video
Fish 🐟 🌮 Day … good one, I’m a Blue and Burundi Black-widow Frontosa crew dude and pleco and Cory , Raphael catfish oh my lol 😂 it’s always a 💥 blast going to the Pet Store ✌🏼
expert? just asking... less flow during the night ?? ocean/sea don't have a tide/flow break and most of the corals as well as fish came from ocean to our glass boxes
You're absolutely right that the ocean doesn’t stop moving at night-there’s no 'break' in tides or flow. In our glass boxes, however, the flow serves multiple purposes beyond mimicking nature. For example, many reefers reduce flow at night to simulate calmer lagoon-like areas where fish and corals naturally experience lower flow, helping some fish feel safer to rest. It also saves a bit of energy in home setups. At the end of the day, it’s all about finding what works best for your reef and its inhabitants.
My jebao return pump later 11 years until it bit the dust now I’m on a L2 from vectors to see if it can beat the longevity of my rip jebao, so they do last
Thats amazing! I love Jebao overall you can't beat them for the price.
ur the guy i click off of every time cause you spend a billion dollars on a system. not even close to being relatable....ur telling me all that money spend and you still cant have a stable system...damn its almost like its skill and not how much you spend that matters lol
I totally get where you’re coming from-reefing can definitely seem overwhelming when you see big builds, and not everyone wants to (or needs to) spend a lot to have a thriving tank. My channel covers a range of setups, and I’m currently working on a 90-gallon build, so stay tuned! I always try to share both successes and challenges to keep things real. I’m always learning, and sharing those lessons is a big part of what I do here.
Great videos , Thanks . What I also like about your sea swirls on closed loop is it's probably the lowest maintenance you can almost get 😊
You're absolutely right-sea swirls on a closed loop are fantastic for low maintenance. It's one of those set-it and-forget-it setups that makes reefing just a little easier.
why on gods green earth are you using metal hose clamps!?!?
There stainless steel but still rust. I changed the plumbing to use a hose to reduce vibration but the hose is so thick that the plastic ones don't work. I just changed them. I'm gonna have to just go back to pvc pipe at some point
They make titanian hose clamps. . Reef safe they be 😊 @@AquariumSurge
Should remove that metal clamp on the return pump
They are stainless steel and not submerged but being in the basement where its humid they still rust so i have just changed them out. The issue is the return pump is very powerful and plastic clamps don't work because the thickness of the braided hose. I originally had a 2" union connected to the return pump going straight up. however, i thought this method would reduce the annoying vibration. It helped some but not that much so it was a failed attempt and I wish i didnt change it.
@ problem is it’s probably 304 Ss you would need 316 if you don’t want to rust. The plastic clamps with the gear teeth best to soften up the hose with heat while still warm get channel lock and squeeze it
@FarmedFrags thanks for the tip. I'll definitely look into those clamps. However I don't like my return pipe setup all the way to the Tank. It's just a 2" p trap that was changed from a 1" seaswirl return, that just reduced flow output so I should have just went up 2" pipe all the way up and split to 3 x 1" outlets above the fish tank. So consider this a temporary situation nothing I want to spend alot of cash for. How much you think those clamps would cost?
@@AquariumSurge Your obviously rust right now
That spot looks well stocked with fish compared to where I live in Holyoke ma , when I went to buy some fish for my tank , I noticed that they still have at the most 8 to 9 empty tanks and they've been that way for about 2 to 3 weeks from what I've seen on their website which said ( out of stock ) way before I went into Petco , I remember a few years ago the Petco in my area never really stayed out of stock for that long , unless certain fish are hard for them to get
The Tunze nanostream pumps are a great mid price option.
I’ve bought the Tunze turbelle pumps and quite impressed compared to the MP60’s.
Yeah they're a really good option.
Nice video! How did you get the top 90 degree elbow off the SeaSwirls?
Thanks, it's just a slip elbow fitting.
@@AquariumSurge The one above the plastic box and motor housing with the grey barb fitting? I think mine is glued. I'll have to check. Thanks!
@@SaltwaterSanctuary Got you! I asked Ed (Seaswirl Owner) to make it that way for me wth 1" slip fitting pointed straight up. I knew I wanted to hard plumb to the front of my tank and didnt want any goofy plumbing running along my eurobrace.
Just went to my Petco in Seminole, FL yesterday. All the firefish in the saltwater tanks were dead/dying. Snail was actively eating one. Clowns all seemed fine. Corals were all hurting. Blue neon gobies and purple dottyback seemed ok. Another fish I couldn't identify seemed ok. No other fish available. Pretty sure they were all on the same central filtration system, so whatever disease one has, they'll all have.
you never sold the orange shoulder?
@@jtdribbles25 No. I sold the hippo Tang
@@AquariumSurge the orange shoulder is soooooo nice... I have one, that is never full. He isn't growing fast tho...
Thanks. I think my tank having alot of tangs and me overfeeding the first year really had it growing 3/4" per month. It's wild how fast all fish grew.. I had to feed them heavy bc of Achilles Tang had ich and only way to keep aggression down was to feed a boat load of food. I ran into no3 phosphate issues (which was expected). What I didn't expect is taking a year to get my nutrients under control. Check out my shorts you can see the difference in growth of the fish
Ive reseted my tank and requartined with nudibranches on a seperate tank

Awesome set up, liked the outlets being raised near the surface as opposed to the bottom (fear being one could fail).

Its impossible to do any sort of predictable science when you're constantly changing every variable trying to bandaid.
Been dosing it using the ACI method, pinning ph overnight. Results are awesome. Wish I did this sooner.
I thought about doing that but it's too much commitment for me. You use the slurry method at night right? I just have mine running continuously now. I stopped chasing PH. I felt I obsessed over it for 18 months and overlooked other things I should have been paying attention too
@@AquariumSurge no, I'm not doing slurry. Just the clear kalk. Dosing it based on daily ph average and been bumping it up, until the tank maintains 8.29 over night. All the dosing is done over night to maintain the 8.29 ph baseline.
@DisplacedCzech Cool. So your manually dosing? What happens when your traveling?
@@AquariumSurge I use an Apex Dos. You just set DOS to dose up to your total possible evaporation rate for the day all within the lights off period. I started with an IM-120 and kind of wish I started with a nano. As a beginner, I wasn’t prepared to spend what I spent on the equipment. At least with a nano tank, I would only need 1 light, one powerhead, one return pump, etc.
I would give anything to have a marine store like this near me. I have to drive almost 2 hr,s to get to a marine fish and corals I trust putting in 300 gallon acro tank. 😢
Where do you live?
@AquariumSurge Tennessee
@TheHemiphil81 yeah I would just go for delivery from TSM for $30. I used to live in the boonies in PA and had to order everything. I did get lucky a few times bc we had a petco and small lfs in the mall that seemed like it was from the 80s
I love TSM! Ive only had an issue once and they made it right. You cant beat paying a slightly higher price once, than the same fish 3 plus times.
Exactly, I've learned this over the years its better to spend a little extra for a fish than get them half dead at petco or liveaquaria.
