Loch Lomond Cruise - Balmaha Circular
Dragged the current Mrs D up to Scotland to show her all the sights I experienced doing the West Highland Way six months earlier…but this time by car!
One thing she really wanted to do was do a cruise on Loch Lomond. We chose the Balmaha Circular, but there’s different cruises from various parts of the loch, which can be found here…

After checking the weather all week and the morning of this climb, I decided to venture up Skiddaw as it was forecast to be clear, sunny and low wind speed…couldn’t have been more wrong. 😂 That being said it was a fantastic (and challenging) walk. And if it told me anything, it was not to trust the weather forecast or the Lake District weather in general. 😂 Latrigg Car Park - CA12 4PH

About 7 mile walk taking in Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook Monument as well as views of Teeside, North Yorkshire moors and the Cleveland hills. As you can probably tell from my heavy breathing, it’s quite hilly in places…and I’m unfit!!! I parked at Gribdale Gate Car Park TS9 6HJ.

Utterly gorge-ous (see what I done there?😂) walk. My old mate Dave, my son Luke and myself booked the trip through our apartment that we were staying in Torremolinos. It cost €58 each including an hour or so in Ardales, the coach dropping you off at the start and picking up at the end and also a guide (Roberto for us) who told us everything there was to know about the walk. Well worth the money...

West Highland Way Day 7 Kinlochleven to Fort William 16 miles. Utterly stunning end to the week, it’s just a pity that you’re naturally thinking about the end to take the full beauty of it in. It’s a fairly steep start to the day but that is soon over with, it soon moves in to slight undulations for the majority of the rest of the hike through Lairig Mor. You then hit a fairly annoying (for me ...

West Highland Way Day 6 Glencoe Mountain Resort to Kinlochleven 10 miles. Utterly, utterly stunning day. Words can barely describe the scenery. Surprisingly longer walk than I thought between the mountain resort and Kingshouse you then climb away from the road for a bit which looks worse than what it actually is. You then turn right up the Devils Staircase, again isn’t too bad until the last th...

Watched this yesterday and now I'm having a night camping on Hare Law. Owa a year since I've done any camping and so glad I've done it. Knackered like but cheers Stephen. Spot on!

Nice one, Steve. That bit before Rowardenan is tough. We did it as part of a day walk and there was a couple who were carrying their bikes up the steps!
Cheers mate. I’d struggle getting up there carrying nothing! 😂
Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your WHW trip. I enjoyed part one of your adventure and I am looking forward to the rest. I hope to have a go at it myself next year so I am particularly keen to follow your itinerary and your choices for camp sites.
Cheers mate. It was an unbelievable week. I know everyone who does it says there’s loads of wild camping spots, but there is. You can make each day as long or short as you want.
good visibility 🤣
Beautiful isn’t it! 👀🙄😂
Nice one Steve 👍
Cheers Jimmy mate. 👍🏻
Nice one Steve 👍
Thanks again Jimmy mate!
That was great Steve thanks. You know what, it’s like seeing the WHW for the first time. There’s been a few UA-camrs recently who’ve done it, but all their films seemed the same. I’m not knocking them it’s just as if there was a certain sequence they all had to film with certain locations. But seeing your films and you explaining what you know really showed it off in a good light. For example, I now know that I don’t need to be too afraid of the Devils Staircase now, but I’ll need to give plenty of time and patience along Loch Lomond as 10 miles there makes it a slower tougher day. That’s gold dust to me being mindful of that. And you really opened the door wide on the huge number of wildcamping spots. That means that I know that if I’m slower or quicker on certain days then I’m sure to find a spot to camp regardless. Apart from the permit part of Loch Lonond. I’ll try coax you into doing a gear review too just to have a gander at gear! Thanks again. Magic! 👍
Cheers mate. You’re too kind. Aye the northern Loch Lomond part is a mental challenge as much as physical. Treat yourself with a stay at beinglas. If you want a pod, get booked quick. Devils staircase isn’t too bad at all. Just plan your hike to suit you. Hopefully I showed that there’s enough places to lay your head. Forgot to mention in the videos that there is a camping restriction in the woods just before beinglas, not entirely sure where it ends. You’ll adore doing it and if you have any questions I’ll do my best to answer them.
Cheers mate. That path leading to Glencoe is very stoney and rocky. If you had foot issues leading up to that point you might struggle on that path. I think my boots are spot on fitting wise, no rubbing or anything and the socks I use are just from Amazon. Done the job. That chest pod is a wild sky one. I have since managed to miraculously get an OMM one when it was in stock for two minutes. Both decent to be fair.
That’s another great video and that overnight at the Centre in Glencoe looks good. I’d quite fancy having a go on the stairlift just to see what it’s like. You mention blisters- not that you’ve got them but just that if someone has blisters they’d struggle on the rocky paths. How have your feet been? Even with good quality Merino socks or with a thin sock then thicker sock I still have to carry that Leuko type kinesiology kind of tape for when I inevitably get hot spots. And is that an OMM chest pack you’re wearing? I searched for something decent sized and affordable and have ordered the OMM one as the lush Wild Sky one on EBay was either too pricey or out of stock. Thanks again 👍
Fab. I enjoyed that Steve, thanks. I like how you identify key aspects of the day like about the clusters of campsites, places to get water, and possible spots to camp. Nice 👍
@@misterpontypine aye the info side of the WHW was one of the main purposes of the videos. It’s a bit daunting when planning where the wild camping spots are for example.
Ah Steve I’m so pleased you’re back. You just make me smile plus you explain things like distance, places, even like how you got the train from and to and how much it cost. You’re like a Geordie walking guide. You won’t remember but I commented (positively!) on some of your previous trips like The Cleveland Way you finished with your son beside you. I’m just chuffed you’re back or I’m back, whichever. And I did the Hadrians Wall walk as a coast to coast finishing at Tynemouth Priory- a nicer view than finishing in Wallsend! I’ve just watched day one of this then starting on your second one. I’ll be doing the St Oswalds Way next month then hoping to do the WHW in spring 🤞
Of course I remember. 😂 If you loved the Hadrian Wall the WHW will blow your mind (if the weather is canny). St Ozzy is on my list. Hope it goes great for you. Cheers! 🥾👍🏻
Wow! Looks amazing - great video again Steve 😊

Hi Steve, nice one mate. i could spend days up there.
Lush man, isn’t it.
Thanks for sharing. A couple of years back stayed in a cottage just down the hill behind Cunyan crags. I did some of this in reverse. Up Cunyan crags, Dunmoor hill, Hedgehope, down to Langlee crags, Threestone which was close to my cottage. Great day out. I've always avoided Coomb fell as everyone on here says about the bogs. Hope your leg is ok. Look forward to your next trip.
Bet it was a lovely place to stay. Stunning part of the Cheviots. It’s about a week and a half later and my leg has just got better now. Should have done some stretching! Thanks for watching. 👍🏻🥾

Hi Steve - thanks so much for sharing your adventures - I loved every one of your videos. I completed the WHW a couple of weeks before you and I’ve missed it every day since. So much so that I’m doing it again in September. I’m not sure if this makes me a total psycho or not, but I loved the Loch Lomond part! 😂 You’re an absolute natural on camera and I can’t wait to watch your other videos.
Yes you’re a psycho!!!😉😂 So jealous of you doing it again! I’m going to wait a few years before doing it again but , like you I think about it a lot. Thank you so much for your kind words. So nice of you. Hope my others aren’t too disappointing. 😂
Nice video mate, will go back and watch day 1 video next. ;-)
Cheers for watching. 🥾👍🏻
Walked the WHW last year. I can feel with you, how it is to cross the finish line. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Hello marra, just finished watching your tour, proper enjoyed it. After doing hadrians wall in May me and her indoors are looking to do cuthberts way next year. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated, looking at 6 days 7 nights, cheers, Jason .
Cheers mate. Much appreciated. 🥾👍🏻 Advice…don’t be put off by the steep beginning for starters. 😂 That being said, there’s a couple of climbs throughout the trail but the sense of achievement you get from getting up them is fantastic, as are the views. Plan your week backwards depending on the tide times at Holy Island. That makes all the difference. Also give yourself time to get back off it. Kirk Yetholm to Wooler is only 12 miles but it’s quite hilly in parts so give yourself time. Also there’s no shops in between so keep an eye on your water and food on that section. It’s a cracking trail. If you liked Hadrian Wall you’ll love this. Some of the views are stunning.

Well done Steve. I say tindrum as opposed to tyndrum n I’m a Scot , really enjoyed your vids
Seems more natural to say tin rather than tyne doesn’t it? Mind you, on the train home they pronounced it tyne. Glad you enjoyed them. 🥾👍🏻
Howay Steve, I absolutely loved this series of videos on WHW. I did my first WHW 4 years ago aged 60 and loved it so much i have been back every year since then and done it again. I will keep on doing it until i am no longer able. Its absolutely amazing as i know you agree. Just got back 1 week after you this year but am also half way through a north to south version having done fort william to Tyndrum in april and going back in August to do Tyndrum to Milngavie. Hope to see you one year as you seem a really great guy

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the series Steve, thanks. Do you know what your pack weighed? Maybe you should ditch Newcastle and support Sunderland! 😂😂😂

I do this walk in reverse every week with my dog. Its a shame you had to drown out the natural sounds of the walk with that appalling music though. Synthetic music and the countryside don't go together to well at all.
Can barely remember doing this video now to be fair but I know I used to put the music over the top because the wind picks up really badly on the iPhone. It’s something I’ve changed over time, still learning with each video really. Then on top of that you have to find music you can use due to copyright, etc. Thanks for your feedback anyway. 👍🏻🥾
Well done Steve - a perfect guide and advocate for the route - I did it about 30 years ago and this has got me thinking - can I do it again in my early 60's - probably with less alcohol along the way.....
Cheers David. Too kind mate. Of course you could do it. Just do it any which way you want, for as long as you want. I promised myself only to drink when I finished…I made it as far as Kinlochleven!🙄
Doing it in style - you'll be getting a porter for the next section.....
I wish. 😂 Couldn’t believe my luck. Especially when I found out the next day what had happened where the tents were.
Thanks for these great videos, full of banter and good advice especially on the wild camping spots! I’ll be walking the Way this summer and I can’t wait!
Thank you, so kind of you. Glad I have been of some help. If you think I can help in any other way that I haven’t covered just message me. There’s probably a load of stuff I missed. Don’t forget smidge and a head net. Didn’t realise how much I’d been bitten until I got home. And I was using them!
I'm with you on the bothy sleeping Steve. Trying to kip in a room with strangers (and meeces) doesn't really float my boat either 😂
Aye, I’m not entirely sure what freaks me out more, the rodents or the humans! 😂
Great videos Steve! Really enjoyed the adventure.

My husband and I are starting in just over 5 weeks, currently nursing damaged tendons in my foot from training for it so fingers crossed! Such a refreshing bunch of videos to watch, and funny too 🤣 well done on your achievement so far! 👏🏻
That’s so kind, thank you very much. Really hope your foot gets better because you’ll need them in fine fettle for the Inversnaid gnarly section and the Glencoe drovers road especially. Making your husband carry the majority of the weight should help as well of course. 😉 So jealous that you’re doing it. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
