    Hi, can you please advise what are the best lenses for a wide & tight shot?

    • @DavidDanielPierce
      @DavidDanielPierce 7 місяців тому

      Hey, I cannot. Lens choice is determined by a series of factors such as budget, look of the film, ease/speed of use etc. But if you’re looking to provide detail and get a detailed personal opinion from me, feel free to shoot me an email.

    Can anyone explain why it is better to use 2 cameras than 1 camera that punches in & out?

    • @DavidDanielPierce
      @DavidDanielPierce 7 місяців тому

      I got you. It's not inherently "better." It offers a visual variety. The same way punching in and out does, but to a greater degree. This greater variety results in a higher production value, and therefore “better.” Have a look at the difference one angle with punching in makes vs two angles.

    • @jessedameron7985

      Thanks. Can you tell me if the framing is right on my video testimonial at YT video J9ebOeWYTQw? I tried to follow the rule of thirds, but positioned the center of her eyes at the intersected lines. It looks like maybe I was supposed to think of her full face as an oval and position the intersection lines at the middle of the oval. Also, I'm not a cinematographer, so forgive the 1 camera angle cropped to fake a 2nd angle. Thanks.

    • @DavidDanielPierce
      @DavidDanielPierce 5 місяців тому

      @@jessedameron7985 Again, there is no "right." But in terms of framing, yeah, it's standard. Utilizing rule of thirds while subject looking into open space. When cinematographers setup shots, they're is a degree of leeway on where the eyes fall on the intersecting lines. Heads up, your keylight is on the nearside of the face and it's not been softened, therefore creating hard shadows (including the one on the wall).

      @@DavidDanielPierce Thanks. I'll look into bringing my own light. (I did not bring any lights. I used the hotel's lamp/light.) Until I do it right, I wonder if these shadows can be reduced in post production?

    If you MUST have a practical light in the frame please have it make sense like beside an armchair or a sofa. It is ridiculously distracting to keep glancing over to the obnoxious practical light that was obviously dragged into the shot for…reasons. I want to concentrate on the story, not keep pondering the mystery of why there’s a light in the background that is on, but not lighting anything.

    excellent video !! .... covers almost everything ! ... just 1 quick question ... where should you place the camera? ... at shoulder level? ... or slightly above? ... or slightly below?

    • @DavidDanielPierce
      @DavidDanielPierce 8 місяців тому

      That depends on the effect that you're going for. And we could get DEEP into depth stylistic-wise, but I won't. For safety, you may want to place the camera at eye-level. That's essentially the standard. A slightly lower angle will give the speaker more of a subconscious powerful and authoritative feel. I tend to do this for MALE-CEO-types. But it comes at the cost of them looking their best, as dark circles and the double chin is more noticeable (which is why I'll lean towards a lower angle for men because they don't give a shit how they look and a powerful feel is more valuable than attractiveness). Although, I have gotten some guys who are particularly worried about how they look on camera, and some women who do not. A little higher angle has the opposite effect. It's a bit more flattering looks-wise, but not as subconsciously powerful. More of something I tend to use when I can tell the subject only cares about how they look on camera, like someone who sells beauty products.

    Question for anyone: I recently had to shoot an interview in a tiny space. a medical examination room. The result is ok but the lack of distance between the subject and rear wall (which is mostly white) makes it look rather flat (and too evenly lit). I am testing this idea: putting a very soft vignette overlay on it, barely noticeable, for some dimension. Meaning, the edges of the image get a tad darker (softly, like the vignetting of a less) than the subject herself. I just made this up as a way to improve on the look of this interview, but am I crazy?

    • @DavidDanielPierce
      @DavidDanielPierce Рік тому

      Crazy: absolutely not. Power windows are very common in most grades. But a simple vignette to add texture is a bit rudimentary. If you really wanna talk more in depth about this, feel free to reach out to me on insta or email, homie.

      @DavidDanielPierce 8 місяців тому

      These graphics were actually outsourced, but yeah--a ton of work. Mostly custom made graphics and rotoscoping with motion. In terms of making the custom graphics, the post house took the Philadelphia Union's brand guidelines and previously made brand graphics and blended them into various motion animations. When you see graphics packages from sports team, it's a big effort.
