Oh man, sounds like a muddled mess. Your camp origin story was hilarious though. I mean, in hindsight it's funny. I went to a camp when I was a youngster and also hated it...for the most part. I liked the archery.
@TheBookGraveyard Haha, it's absolutely a memory I look back on at laugh at. What's even better is that the teacher that stayed behind took the kids that didn't go to the bowling alley. The first time I went up to I went up, I tripped over my own feet and cracked my jaw right off the ball. Needless to say, physical activity has never been my strong point, haha! As for the book, it's definitely a mess. There were a lot of great threads, but they never ended up coming together, and it just felt like a complete dud with almost all of them.
Hi Stephen, greetings again from Toronto. I hope you are well. Thanks for uploading your review. From what you said, ‘Camp’ sounds like it didn’t live up to its potential. Some good scenes, some interesting characters, some good writing , it should have been better, as you said. I’ve never heard of Alan Saperstein, and I guess I know why. This could have been a cool ‘B movie’ type of novel. Oh, well. Take care and good reading to you!
@andrewcrow1031 Hi Andrew! Thanks for watching, as always! Yes, unfortunately, it wasn't a great read. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, but I was hoping for more fast-paced fun. I don't mind when a story is cheesy, but I still need it to be at least coherent. I'm surprised I've never heard of the author, either, especially with a title like, "Mother kills children and self" as your only other work. But, perhaps this was written as a sort of "what do I do now" thing after the surprise success of his first novel. I still plan on checking it out.
Wow, you've convinced me to keep my eyes peeled for "Friend". A book that makes someone cry is a pretty good litmus test for quality. I felt the opposite about the 2 "great classics", Frankenstein and Dracula. I remember Dracula being a slog to get through, but I absolutely loved Frankenstein
@@pointytoebro Friend is definitely a book to add to your library. I think it's a perfect horror story for both beginners and veterans to the genre. Ha, funny how that works! I did enjoy Frankenstein, and I love the existential melancholy, but I really feel that it would have been just a bit better if the monologs were constructed more as a conversation.
Seems like the author just missed the mark on this one. Its a shame because the camp setting for a story is always rich with potential. Probably why RL Stine did a new camp story once a year in the 90s
@@pointytoebro All the pieces of a great story were there, but it's as if the instructions were written in a different language. I really am disappointed because, as you said, a camp setting is a perfect outline for a horror story, especially a cheesy slasher one.
a chiropractor, they missed calling the place Camp Crack-a-Back.
@@TheJericho1123 Ha, good one! Reminds me of a camp near my old house, Camp Ramsbottom.
Hi Stephen, this is my fourth message to you; UA-cam has deleted the other three. Maybe it was too long. Briefly, I read The Other Child (that we talked about 9-10 days ago). I gave it three stars on Goodreads. It was an OK read. Are you on Goodreads? I have a short (bad) review on it. Looking forward to the next video!
I didn’t mean that I gave the book a bad review, my review was bad, i.e. awful!
@andrewcrow1031 Hey, Andrew! Sorry it's taken me a bit to get back to you, I've been a bit busy lately. I am on Goodreads! Same name as it is on here. I actually read your review, and it's great! Reviews don't need to be overly long or completely in depth all the time. Honestly, I really enjoyed how focused your review was and said everything I'd want to look for in a review! Don't sell yourself short; reviewing is hard. I don't feel like any of my reviews are very good because I feel like I'm constantly bouncing around on topics. But, I feel that the video would be a lot less authentic and engaging if it was just me reading a script. Keep your reviews going!
@@littlelibraryofhorrors Thanks Stephen; I’m used to writing scientific papers, not prose! I sent you a ‘friend’ request. Take care, Andrew
@andrewcrow1031 I'm sure your review is leagues better than any scientific paper I take a crack at, haha. I'll be sure to accept your request! Take care, Andrew!
@@littlelibraryofhorrorsThanks, take care!
Hi, greetings again from Toronto. Checking out your backlog. I’ve tried several Paul Tremblay books and I can’t get into his writing style or find interest in his characters. I bought The Entity at a thrift shop over 30 years ago and it still sits on my bookshelf unread! I will get to it… I read Frankenstein way back in my ‘20s and enjoyed it, but I found it a bit hard going. Something Wicked This Way Comes is a book I’ve read only recently, even though I’m a big Bradbury fan. And Whalefall is in my TBR notebook. Thanks for the list! Have a great day.
@andrewcrow1031 Hi again, Andrew! Thanks so much for watching again! I've found Tremblay to be a one hit wonder for me. I LOVED A Head Full of Ghosts, but everything else has fallen flat in comparison. I don't mind an ambiguous ending, but at some point, it starts to feel like lazy writing. I'd rather you give me a bad ending I can dissect rather than nothing at all. I hope you enjoy The Entity more than I did. Like I said, the writing isn't bad, I just wanted something different. I'm sure you'll love Whalefall!
Firstly: nice shirt as usual :) Secondly: excessive exclamation points hahaha I feel ya! I was reading a Richard Laymon book one time...a few years ago I think it was (maybe longer) and I suddenly noticed that he kept using the same word over and over again. I cant even remember what the word was now but there was like 4 of it used on the one page and I remember it being a bit of a weird word to use aswell and it really took me out of the moment coz all I could think was USE A THESAURUS!!!! hahaha

Hi, greetings from Toronto 🇨🇦. I hope you are well. It was a good video; I will have to check out this book. I know Joanne Fluke from her cosy mysteries. She’s written dozens. And yeah, I can see her writing Hallmark movies as well. Take care and good reading to you!
@@andrewcrow1031 Greetings, Andrew! Hope you're fairing alright up in the north! Thanks so much for checking out the video. There's a book mentioned here, The Other Child, that seems interesting and is written by her. Have you heard of it? Cheers and a happy year of reading to you as well!
Hi, thanks for writing back. The weather here is OK, about 23F and sunny. How is it where you are? I checked the Toronto Public Library and they have one copy of The Other Child, which I can put on hold. Briefly, it’s about a couple who are restoring a Victorian mansion. There are rumours that evil lives there. The ghost of a child haunts them, calling to their unborn child (paraphrased). I just put some books on hold this morning so I think I will go and add this one now. I’ll let you know how it is. Take care!
it's ok Bluey, good recommendations take time and we appreciate you're not just shoving content. It is refreshing to see someone being honest about their suggestions. Happy new year!
@Anotherusernameistaken Ha, I've always felt more akin to Bandit, but I appreciate it! I'm very serious about my recommendations and my channel overall, so I really do try to put my all into a video. Happy New Year!
Great video, I recall a lot of them from your previous videos and had even bought whalefall because of your review, am yet to read it though. I had initially decided to set myself goals of reading over the years and it was really great when last year I read 53 books that year but then this year I only managed to read 30 books and that was really sad and took the enjoyment away from it even though 30 is still a decent number. I think I'll ease up on trying to set reading goals this year (2025) I hope you had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year :) I look forward to this year of videos from you :)
@GrimSquirrel666 That's so cool! I'm so happy to hear you bought something based on my opinion! I had set goals for twenty-four books the last three years, but when I didn't even come close, I was pretty hard on myself, and it just took the joy of reading away. So, I decided one book a month was something I could absolutely do, even in times when I'm taking a break. Happy New Year, Grim! I hope your holidays were just as great and here's to another year of videos!
UA-cam didn’t notify me of a 56:00 minute Stephen video!?! 🤬 get to watch before bed now!
@mikeanderson623 The fiends! Hope you enjoy, Mike!
reasonable goal, I`ve been limiting myself to 1 a month for a few years now, I just started Murder in Venice by Agatha Christie.
@TheJericho1123 Any recommendations for a starting point in Agatha's work? I tried one book one time, but it didn't really click with me, and I stopped before I got too far.
@@littlelibraryofhorrors it's her first book that I have, I mostly hunt at thrift stores, so I`m lucky if I find something worthwhile.
I did the same thing as you. For some reason, I took a break from reading during my teenage years - even though as a kid I devoured goosebumps and animorphs.
@@zacharyconyers4691 I think hormones had a lot to do with it. That, and I was just really starting to learn that I had a mental illness.
I love the purple casket interior on the cover of “Seed of Evil.” It’s the details for me. 😂
It's definitely the little things that truly make a great cover!
I haven't read it, but did watch the movie "RED" based off a book of the same name by Ketchum that isn't his usual go-to, the book has been on my list for a while.
@TheJericho1123 RED is FANTASTIC! It's such a heartbreaking but awesome tale of revenge. It's easily one of my favorites by him. I haven't seen the movie, though.
I credit this book and Elizabeth Engstrom's "When Darkness Loves Us" with getting me back into reading after a long hiatus. I really loved this one and found the flowery language to be a positive for me. But you're right, I think I does have some brief moments that required me to reread the paragraph. The father character was so well-written imo--Bradbury definitely either has, or knows someone who has depression based on that characterization.
@@pointytoebro I'm thrilled that you loved this book. I just genuinely think that maybe I'm not... intelligent enough to fully grasp the prose? As I mentioned, it's not a knock towards Bradbury or how he writes; I just prefer a simpler prose. Charles was what the piece I needed to really start loving the story. I have depression myself, so I could really relate to a lot of his monologs and self perception. To me, that's where Bradbury really started to shine. When an author takes the time to sit their character down and let us take a deep dive into their psyche, I feel like that's where the real stories are and what the author is really trying to get out.
@littlelibraryofhorrors Charles was such a great character. Even his tendency to focus on his age when he's...45ish? That's a classic cognitive distortion of depression. Is he a little old? Yeah. Is it a big deal? Not nearly as much as he thinks it is. I also had the benefit of reading this one while on a beautiful road trip across the south West with my girlfriend. So I read a lot of this by flashlight in a cozy tent. I'm sure that elevated the experience at least a bit and gained it extra points lol
@pointytoebro I'm 35, and I find myself sort of struggling with the same thoughts. I know, it seems ridiculous to think mid thirties are old, but my body certainly feels the grasp of time with some things. That definitely will do it! Having an atmosphere like that is perfect for this kind of story. I remember reading Night of the Living Dummy in my closet with just a flashlight as a kid, and it was the first time a book ever gave me a nightmare.
@littlelibraryofhorrors 35's still plenty young, man. And reminiscing on Goosebumps is a good way to keep feeling youthful. I read most of Cry of The Cat from the 2000s series overnight with a flashlight as a kid. Good timesss
I bagged a copy of this book last week 👍🏻
@@robtheroyal8968 I really hope you enjoy it!
being a bird owner with a beard, it kind of sucks when they decide to pluck. I might start a Bradbury book soon.
@TheJericho1123 Haha, thankfully, Elsa loves my beard and is usually resting in it. You should definitely check out his work! As I mentioned, the prose can be a mouthful, but the characters are so vibrant and unique that it's worth pushing through.
New vid Friday!!! Yay
@@mikeanderson623 I appreciate you always watching, Mike! Thanks a lot!
How many books do you read a year?
@pointytoebro It fluctuates, honestly. It really depends on what my brain wants to focus on at the time. This year, I'm on track to have about twenty books read, compared to last year, which was seven or eight. I've been doing my best to focus more on reading this year over other distractions.
@littlelibraryofhorrors I think I'm on my 17th, so also on track for 20, myself. Definitely hard to find the time, but I've been glad that I've been able to do a lot more lately
the Ravenloft books are part of the Forgotten Realms Dungeons and Dragons universe

Moon of the Wolf - was that one made into a movie? I know there is a movie of that name that I like. Sepulchre James Herbert....OMG so jealous! and Demon Night too holy crap you got some good finds. Great video. oh btw on the whole being surprised how many books a particular author can do, I'm not Goodreads and the amount of stuff you find on there is insane haha.
@@GrimSquirrel666 I haven't seen a ton of movies, so I'm not really sure. It looks like it should have been a movie, that's for sure. I was psyched to find the ARCS, especially the Herbert! I'm also on Goodreads and love to see what authors have written through the years. I just thought Yarbro was maybe a one and done in the genre, but she's been a pretty big contributor. I'll have to read some of her work in the next year.

Stephen, I just added this to my Goodreads TBR based on your great review. Also, I had no idea Wes Craven's movie Deadly Friend was based on a book so I'll have to read this and then rewatch the movie some day!
@bryanfarrell2029 Thanks so much, Bryan! Yes, a detail I forgot to mention is that Deadly Friend by Wes Craven is based on this book. I've never seen the movie myself, so I'll have to go check it out! Thanks so much for watching!
thank you for going out of your way to recommend good reads to me!
@@orihamz00 Of course! I appreciate you giving my video your time and attention!
Firstly - awesome shirt! Secondly - I have that copy of The Ruins on the right with the white and red lettering, I don't know if I've seen the one on the left. Those covers are so awesome man I'm so jealous! omg the whipping boy ones haha I have like 4 different books called The Ritual all by different authors not at all related in any way and its like what the heck man haha Man it sounds like you got some awesome second hand bookshops near you. I need to do some more searching in my area I'm exhausting the shops near me haha Such a bargain too I bet the shop keep's eyes were popping out their heads seeing you carry all those books haha Another great video :)
@GrimSquirrel666 Thank you! I love Junji Ito's work. I always grab a new shirt of his if I see it. Ha, I've seen The Ritual so many times by so many authors. It's just a name like Whipping Boy is such an odd thing to have two different people come up with. Definitely expand your search area if you can! I try to stay within an hour's drive of my town. It's also a good idea to make friends with the bookkeeper! They tend to be very friendly and knowledgeable. Haha, he definitely had a surprised look on his face when I walked up with the first stack. He said, "Well, I see you found a couple that you like." Even my sister's eyes bugged a little when she saw what I had.
@@littlelibraryofhorrors ah yeah I watched the Netflix series and read some of the books...nightmares hahaha but its great. yeah the whipping boy is quite an unusual title indeed for it to be twice haha yeah where I used to live there were heaps of second hand book stores i used to go to that had a great selection, one of them closed when the man out of the couple had passed away and his wife didnt want to handle the bookshop alone. I dunno what they did with it in the end. the other one is still going but its like a 1 and half hour to two hour trip so probably not possible at this stage which is a shame. I definitely have to do some searching though. haha I bet you made their day though :) they will see you again and be like right there goes all my stock hahaha
