[Episode 24] In this video I show you how to play the riff and the solos in "The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair" recorded live at the BBC on 6.16.1969. It's a great example of the kind of songs Zep could quickly throw together around a riff, and it's also a great showcase for Jimmy's 1969-era lead playing. Awesome!!!
Thanks!!
such a killer song....I remember this when it came out.....Ray Gillen was a badass singer... good job on the lesson bro....Pariah Pickups shirt is cool AF too...I had a couple different ones with burnt Chome covers....
Thanks! Yeah, I'm a big fan of Pariah Pickups. I've tried 5 different models in my guitars, and I'm very happy with all of them. I haven't seen the burnt chrome--I'll check that out.
i bought the guitarworld magazine that had three days tabbed out. it was very wrong on the solos. if i could only send you a picture of what they tabbed out. august of 2009 and it had that clown billy joe armstrong on the cover
I try to check with live footage to see if I have the fretboard positions correct, but it was tough for this one because the camera would never stay on Dave for very long. After I made this some great videos popped up from their 2024 European tour like this: ua-cam.com/video/KNl1LcO_r0M/v-deo.htmlsi=khWDdgA0cVQiYZ7J I noticed that for the four notes preceding and the first notes that are volume swells he sticks to the G string. Other than that, I think I have everything in the right positions.
Can you do that one lick Jimmy did in the middle at the start of the solo of Rock n roll from MSG 1973. I've been trying to learn it
I see (hear) why you mention that lick. It's very difficult to hear what he is doing. The movie doesn't help because what you see might be Page doing his best to mime to it a year later at the soundstage filming. It's probably better as an exercise to imitate his mannerisms than to try to get the exact notes.
Thank you so much for this transcription!
You're welcome--I'm happy to be able to share it!
Heyy could someone tell me what kind of marshall amp that is?
It's an SV20H.
Wowww, thanks master
Hey--thanks!
Hats off you've got it sussed. There really weren't many guitarists playing like that in 1978!
Thanks! Yeah, this song is a great showcase for Brian's abilities.
I've been listening to Van Halen II a lot lately and I think it's my favorite album.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your work.
You're welcome--thanks!
Thanks man!
You're welcome--thank you!
Jesus that TONE😍
What pedals do you use??? I use the same sv20 also with a single humbucker guitar
I was hesitant to answer because I didn't know if you meant my tone or Ed's. If you mean mine, Thanks! If you mean Ed's, I know right! I have the volume on the SV20 between 7 and 8, and I'm using an Ibanez Booster Mini (BTMINI) as a clean boost into the front end. The Level knob is at around 2 o'clock on the Ibanez.
Buenísimo, te felicito..!
Muchas gracias - muy apreciado!
Can you please reference or explain the technique you are using to play at 2:27? On transcription, it looks like I can just keep my finger on 8th fret of B (and later on 15th fret) and do the pull-offs on high E but you are doing it differently, and it sounds way better the way you do it. Or wouldn't it be more convenient to just keep the 8th (and later the 15th) fret pressed the whole time or it is different from the technique?
Sure. It's a repeated four note figure. I only pick the first and the last note, so I pick the 7th fret E string (index), hammer-on the 10th fret E string (pinky), pull-off to the 7th fret E string, and then pick the 8th fret B string (middle). I keep the index finger anchored, not the middle finger. I don't keep the middle finger down because it feels awkward when executing the hammer-on and pull-off. Also, if you keep the middle finger down, that note keeps ringing which you don't want. It's the climactic part of the solo, so you want each note to have weight behind it. My middle finger comes down with the same force as my pinky to try to make the strings sing.
could you maybe do the “cant get away from you “ solo? please
oh , and their superstition cover !!
Those two would be hard to make videos of because of their lengths. That Nicolette Larson solo is only 14 seconds long. Superstition is incredible, but it might take a 15 minute long video to cover everything he plays in that one.
@ well the solo could be posted as a reel ? i really want to learn it
@madman8535 I'll look into that.
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet thank you sooo much man
Wow! Excellent. Ed and Al were right in the groove (as usual). Sounds like he played a Les Paul on that demo. Maybe one of Ace's.
Yeah, I would love to know what guitars and amps he used on that, because he sounds so completely different.
Nice to see ya back in action, could you show how to play the fool and me cover by Van Halen? I think it was the same show they did the rover at
would be sweeet
That's a good one.
This is the best version. Great playing! Appreciate the lesson. Have you heard Woman In Love from the Simmons' demo?
Thank you! I did a video for Woman in Love from the Simmons demo: ua-cam.com/video/Tlggm8Kynz0/v-deo.html
I listened to lots of his old guitar playing... you can hear his underline DNA... but someone helped him come to focus... you know who or any stories ?
If you listen to the version of this song on the Gene Simmons produced demo recorded the previous year (ua-cam.com/video/sXGbPX4UXMY/v-deo.html) you can clearly hear the impact and influence Donn Landee and Ted Templeman had on his/their recorded sound. As far as the evolution of Ed's playing, I think that came entirely from within.
What scale/mode is this?
It's a minor blues in the key of C. After the introductory notes, Bonham and JPJ come in on the iv chord (Fmin) over which Jimmy plays a lick which artfully outlines F minor. From then on he mostly sticks to C blues/minor pentatonic scales occasionally adding notes (D and Ab) from C Minor (Aeolian).
@ lord I’d love to see tab for the entire song as he uses those scales in different ways than I’ve heard before
Excellent video!
Thank you!
🔥
Great playing… could you do rumblin’ train…
Thanks! Rumblin' Train is great! Let's see how this video does.
Hi! First of all, I want to give you a huge compliment: I know very well that this song and it's not easy at all, and you play it perfectly. I envy you so much, and I would give anything to be able to play even half as well as you do. That said, I have to say that your lesson on “High Wire” by Badlands, a song I’ve loved forever, left me a bit disappointed. I’m a huge fan of Jake E Lee and was one of the first to buy this album when it came out in 1989. Since then, I’ve been waiting for someone to teach me how to play this piece. Unfortunately, from your video, it’s hard to grasp: the backing track with the other instruments and vocals creates a lot of confusion. Also, even when you play it slowly, it’s still too fast for someone trying to learn. Please, if you can, redo the video by playing the intro riff and the solo without the backing track and much more slowly. I would be really grateful. I understand that many people comment just to criticize, but I want to emphasize that this is not my intention. I truly appreciate your skill, and I just want to help make your video more accessible to those of us who don’t have your superpowers. Finally, I know that UA-cam videos can be slowed down, but the audio quality suffers and it becomes hard to distinguish the notes. Thank you for your attention, and I hope to see an improved video on this fantastic song soon!
Thanks for the feedback. I forgot to mention in the video that there is a link to the tab of my transcription in the description section beneath the video. I know that my videos are a little different than others, because I want to avoid talking through the string and fret numbers of each note. The tab does a way better job of that, and you can take it and use it to practice along with the actual track. I appreciate all of the compliments!
dude...a guy named Dave Nassie with a buzz haircut does a nice slower version of this lesson....accurate too...High Wire...great song
would you consider doing believe me ?
That is one that should definitely be done. I think the only reason I haven't done it already is because it has two solos, which would make for a longer video. The first solo has some awesome stuff!
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet i would really appreciate the whole thing!! and angel eyes. two amazing songs i would kill to be able to play. wish i had your ears haha
Great job! Thanks for tabbing it out, it's very helpful! How was seeing them in September? (I had tickets to the Bridgeport show they cancelled right after the "incident")
Cool-thanks for letting me know! The Chicago show would have been eleven days after the Boston show, so I didn't get to see them either. I was looking forward to it but obviously it wasn't meant to be.
spot on !
Thanks!
Good job, man.
Thanks!
MEENNALS & HANNELS & SQUEALS >Forevermore😊
it still kills me that this song wasn’t released on WACF. i don’t get it man! great video bruh
Thanks! Yeah, I feel like that about several songs. They should have made a double album at some point. I noticed recently that Ed used a part of Red Zone in "Get Up" at 2:43.
Awesome thanks so much for this… Got it. Would you happen to have the backing track for this by any chance or let me know where you think I could get it. I tried a couple searches, but haven’t found it yet. Thanks so much again. Excited to see some of the other lessons.
Thanks-I'm glad you like this! I don't know of any available backing tracks, but here is a way that you could pretty easily make one that keeps Perkins' amazing percussion, and what must be Perry's maniacal strumming. I use a program called "Transcribe!" to learn/transcribe and practice. It has a Karaoke setting which removes whatever is in the center of the mix. For "Three Days" it removes the guitar solo but unfortunately it also removes the bass. However, if you export the sound file with the removed guitar and bass to a track on your DAW you can overdub the bass yourself. It's a repeated figure that I demonstrate in my Part 2 video: ua-cam.com/video/J3bxrHMIV7Q/v-deo.html
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet Awesome- thx so much appreciate it 🙏🏻!!! Excited to go through and learn some of these Van Halen bootlegs
@@rocknrollproperty That's great!
Great lesson and incredible playing but also right in the pocket. Really fantastic!
Thanks-that's very encouraging!
Love it. I always jammed it out in E minor ; i can KIND of make it work but you inspired me to grab my guitar and boom... Lydian.
For the way I view the key and scales used, check out my reply to @danielgray1073 below--the second one where he mentions the key and the modes. And thanks!
If you want to hear another underrated guitarist that I believe is just as creative and has the chops as Navarro in terms of alt rock, check out the band Into Another.. specifically the album Ignaurus. Peter Moses is the guy's name. He's an unknown monster

Idiots Rule would be a good one. If I can figure out what he's doing at the one minute mark, I'll do it.
Best band ever, and Dave’s such an underrated guitarist in my eyes.
