Beefing The BTR Part Three | AU Oil Pump Upgrade
In this episode I finish off the $70 BA NA budget box by upgrading the oil pump using an older style AU gearset. The factory BA style gears are far too undersized and fail to supply sufficient oil volume to the box, not to mention are prone to failing at the drive tang engagement surface as they lack thickness. A vital upgrade which also increases cooling efficacy, leading to a longer lasting transmission.

Hey Cody, great work mate you make it look so easy… I’m looking at doing exactly as you have done to yr car. I have an NA BF XR6 Ute both engine & BTR have done 295000km. The engine is still strong, the box however does shift/flares between 3rd & 4th & when stationary & you go to select R or D most times it won’t select..? So I also want to “Beef up the BTR” as we are also doing a turbo conversion. Can you advise on whether the box is worthwhile having someone fix these problems, then get them to “Beef it up” or should try for another box, I’m obviously on a budget, and to be honest we are realistic about the engine so we won’t be out to extract big kw out of the engine our aim is to reflect an FG std factory fit or as close as possible 250-270 at flywheel. Thanks for your comment Trevor. I'd personally look at doing a trans cooler and ordering a high performance clutch kit for the box. I can supply this is you need one!

we have a Ssangyong Actyon Sport 2008 4 gear forward automatic car. when we put the car in reverse, it mostly engages late. we press the brake and gas to make it engage faster. sometimes its smooth but mostly there is a delay. what could be the problem? can you please give us a tip?
What model AU M93LE or the M95LE?
Is there a difference between au na and au turbo trans or are they the same?
How refreshing to watch an excellent , informative "how to" vid in a typical understated , non waffling, Australian style. Way too many (US ?) How did you remove the front band piston at 4.12? Mine is leaking and cannot find any info to remove it to replace o ring
Hey mate, these front servo covers are held in with a internal circlip. Whole assembly slides out when removed, if the box is open, just simply push on the band apply rod.

The one i got is on 300,000, i've serviced it a few times, just put a service kit in this morning, it has always been smooth and responsive although it did start to buzz. Dirty filters, had castrol dex III Mixed with penrite dex iii with additive, seem to handle 10psi. Turbo engine.

Not really mate, I do tuning here and there but mostly on my own vehicles and friends. Too much liability.
I am debating swap options. Are all the Barra blocks cast iron, or is there an aluminum version? So far the Barra has a better design for maintenance than the other option, but more weight. Parts availability is a bit of a wash. Thank you for the video.
Hey mate, all blocks constructions are give or take the same, minus the dipstick provision. Also, all blocks are cast iron
Have you looked into modified valve bodies and billet servos? I see DTM sell them as a kit. Keen to see some more videos from you, mate!

I’ve seen on other comments Apparently the camshaft snap when undoing the caps Have you heard about this
Never heard of it happening nor had it happen to me, however I am aware of people recommending to remove caps in sequence because camshafts are brittle and can snap if they have a build up of tension from the valve train due to incorrect removal.
I always remove carefully and when installing, I do roughly 3 to 4 stages to seat the caps before torquing

How did you get into this line of work? I am a bike mechanic who has the capacity to rebuild planetary gear systems for bicycles which is equally complex but on a much smaller scale. I would like to do something like this, it looks nice and challenging.
Go for it mate! I just developed a passion for cars when I bought my first car and it went from there.
Do you rebuild BTRs as a job? What's a sensible price for a rebuild? I have a 5L Fairmont that has a BTR with about 300k on it. It seems to be going strong but surely a rebuild would be worth it. @@thebarraspecialist

Nice work mate, Love this series. I have an AU XR8(97LE) BTR that i'm planning to rebuild and use in my 98 XH. I believe I can use a 6 cyl stall converter on it with no issues, is that correct? Also, will i need to swap the looms over due to the XR8 normally running a TCM? Cheers

I got a green lpg bf losing half litre off water a month ...under pressure test gauge doesn't move no leaks has never overheated no water in oil ...thought it might be coolant cap replaced that still losing a bit water ...any ideas
I reckon it's your head gasket. Maybe gas convertor diaphram too.
