Using data to find the right games to play no matter the situation.
A 5-Year-Old’s Board Game Day Adventure: Hits, Misses, and What We Learned!
We recently attended a Board game Game day here in Sydney hosted by the Board Game BBQ crew. This video aims to share our experince as we try to find games to play not matter the situation, granted this was an easy on as we had alot of help from all the volenteers. In this video, Adrian and his 3-year-old son, Ethan, share an objective best 5 games for 3 year olds & Toddlers based on data and wide spread word of mouth recommendations. They also explore their top 5 favorite games for toddlers. They rate each game based on Ethan's enjoyment, suitability for kids, and adult engagement. The games include Happy Salmon, 5 Second Rule Jr., Rhino Hero, Pancake Pi...
Shame you can't buy the game anywhere in the UK. Restock/reprint needed.
Needs more Schnappsen. I would say that Bridge is "objectively" the best game to play with a standard deck of cards in terms of depth, strategy, decision space, etc. I would encourage people to try to learn it on an app like Tricky Bridge
Solid list and nice methodology. If your wife enjoys Just One and Codenames, I can strongly recommend So Clover.
Thank you for the kind words and recommendation
Loved the idea and the format! Awesome wife u have tnere

Awesome video! Your kids are lucky to have a fun dad to take them to experience exciting and fun new ways to discover games. Great tips as well- very helpful. I'm sure parents would appreciate them.
Thanks mate.
Im making a very similar game and since i dont know how to code, i rely on physical play. I made sliders to use for stats, so i dont have to keep track of numbers mentally or have to write down on a piece of paper or use my phone. Also another thing im implementing is dice and type effects, the type effects are very similar to pokemon. Instead of winning locations your doing damage to other players in pvp mode. In PVE its much like slay the spire. Where Marvel snap comes to play is each character has its niche effects and Locations that change how you should approach each game comes to effect. Also its alot like Marvel Snap since you get increasing energy each turn. Some locations though are boosts to cards with that type. Since the game is based off an original series im writing, the game takes place in Hell, so youre fighting a bunch of Gods, Demons, Monsters, Aliens etc etc. Since its my game i can even put characters and colabs that i want since i dont have to worry about copyright 😁
Sounds intriguing, keep it up. Feel free to join the discord and keep me updated , I would be down to play test it some day
My gateway games that always do well. Valiant wars (Deckbuilding with a blackjack mechanic), sheriff of Nottingham, and potion explosion.
This was an exceptional review and the format was really enjoyable. I liked the analysis and comparison between other similar games. Great job 👍
Thank you, I'm new to this and it's comments like this that really motivate me to make more. Thank you
Woow this ia great! Im currently designing a snap like board game and this is super useful At the moment I was testing playing with the cards from snap but with the win condition being different, instead of winning 2 out of the 3 locations in turn 6, you get points for winning specific locations every turn (its random for every match, but following a specific structure) It losses on the bluffing aspect, since a player can have a lead, but... Is not like I have figured out a way of beating something that is not money so It doesn't have the snap either
Sounds interesting, if you want to playtest hit me up on my discord, happy to test it. I too have dabbled in creation. I was working on a mod for smash up to make it more like Snap, for those video, but decided it wasn't polished enough to launch and took away from complie
I knew of these games, but your analysis was very well done and made this video worth the watch! Here are a few things you may like to know…. Air, Land and Sea has a sequel called spies, lies and supplies with three different lanes tied to three different sets of cards, which can be mixed and matched for more replayability and you can combine both for a 5 lane battler. Guardians from plaid hat games is another shuffle builder that you may enjoy a lot, though it also draws inspiration from overwatch. Smash up is very much the progenitor of this genre of games and I feel it goes sadly very uncredited. It predates the other games by a long time. I was a bit disappointed that in his pannel on the making of Marvel snap Ben Brodes briefly mentioned it a single time, as without Smash up compile, marvel snap, air land and sea and many other games would not exist!
What an insightful comment, thank you for the kind words and extra info. I saw the equal for air land sea, I am intrigued but opted against it for simple comparison sake. Haven't heard of Guardians, I'll take a look. Lastly Smash up is brilliant sad to hear doesnt get more credit. My only criticism really is the length of the game and the heavy maths, we use dice to keep track so we don't have to keep counting locations. I feel if the games locations had point sliders on them kinda like king of Tokyo, would be way easier to keep track of and speed up the play. Otherwise great game.
I’m honestly disappointed this isn’t already a physical card game
Agreed, but it be very hard with the near infinite math
@@WhatCanIPlay. true. I mean, yeah they would have to modify it slightly but, they could also add extra prices for power gains kinda like pokemon damage counters. Infinites are impossible tho I agree 🤣
Yeah, that's why I'm trying find something similar in experience even if it's not marvel, this to me is the closest. I'll keep searching maybe one day
I really enjoyed this vlog and also love games with my 3 year old son, especially as an alternative to TV! we haven't played any of your suggested games yet! We currently zingo, spot it & clack! Thanks for the tips.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
When I feel like playing Compile. Playing Air, Land and Sea first is a great warm up game to get your brain into that battle mode. Playing all 3 games just gets better and better as you get more familiar with the cards and their mechanics. The strategies and combo plays become insane to witness and very fulfilling, regardless if it's you who plays them or your mates- which you just have to give it to them an say GG.
Couldn't agree more
Great video. One note on The Crew...I understand your thought of a cooperative game being something that might appeal to non-gamers, and I think, in general, you're probably right. But the Crew doesn't allow your fellow players to help you... which means that if you make a mistake, you're letting everybody down, which can be really intimidating to new gamers
Such a great perspective, makes alot of sense, and I totally see that playing out in my gaming group. Thanks for the mind words.
Very fun, love the analysis and the wife's input.
Thank you so much!
Honored to have been watched for data! I think I gave some weirder picks for mine on purpose! This is a great video. Love this approach.
Honoured to have been watched by you. Thanks for the kind words
Just One and Codenames work well for nongamers because they are more group social activities than a games.
Absolutely, everything I pull one of those out, it makes me think how beautiful board gaming is and how not everything has to with a "board" or difficult. It's why I make this channel, to bring play to more people's lives and these games are just so simple and wonderful, they will be forever keepers.
Great list.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you
I enjoy heavier games but am always keeping an eye out for games I can share with less experienced gamers. I have a well-rounded collection at this point. Also, Codenames is my favorite game; the GOAT. I find that King of Tokyo can be a little light for experienced gamers; however, with the Power-Up expansion it's great.
Thanks for sharing, great take.
3 family/gateway games you may want to try is Fresco, Stone Age and Dice Town. Easy Peasy and Unique. Of course there are many, but i teach Newbies new games at my board gaming group and these 3 never fail. Good luck on your journey.
Appreciate the kind words, I'll check those out, maybe they'll make a future appearance in a video.
This is a new approach to reviews: data heavy but with a clear human element. I’m a heavy trick-taking gamer and while The Crew and Nokusu Dice really scratches that itch, it’s wise to start off new gamers with Skull King and Potato Man first so they get the ideas and basic skills needed. And sometimes a certain game and mechanic may never have the chance to appeal. I’m like that with TtR. Thanks for the video!
This comment means the world, exactly what I'm trying to do. Thank you so much for the kind words and suggestions.
Cascadia is my favorite game right now. I think that is easy to learn, but there is a bit more to it in figuring out what to draft and where to place everything. Azul, which appears just out of the top 10 on your graph, is my number 2 game. Just One is a great filler or something to start the evening. I agree that The Crew might not work for someone that has never played a trick taking game. Took a bit for my girlfriend to figure it out. Haven't gone back to it in a while. Codenames I've only played at two, I think, and also played Codenames Duet. It can be a struggle to come up with clues that can get more than 1 word without risking the assassin. Some other good gateway games - For Sale, No Thanks, Super Mega Lucky Box, and Point Salad.
Love this comment, it's comments like this why I wanted to make this video. Thank you, some great recommendations there too!
Her hand writing is beautiful.
It really is, had to show it off
@@WhatCanIPlay. So impressive
@@laartwork Sure is!
Great video! My top 3 games from this list are Cascadia, Codenames and Scout.
Nice video. It's another proof how different persons like different games and relying in a top 10 doesn't guarantee success when introducing a game to someone. It's like music, food, books, etc. Anyway, I've read that there's no game to please everyone, but with so many games at least one will be enjoyable for a specific individual.
Absolutely, in most of my videos I aim to take the subjective nature out at the start with the data, so at the end we can see how many actually land. It's always a fascinating journey. Glad you liked it
Great video me, if you like to keep up with every project I do, this channel here is another to follow.
Thanks me
this video is exactly what I'm looking for! ❤❤❤
Glad I could help.
Amazing vid
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video 🎉 - Id definitely pop in dragonimo and sleeping queens as two of the best games for 4 year olds (and above) depending on their abilities in case a follow-up vid will happen annually…😅👍
Thanks for sharing!!
Great content man! Instant subs! Keep on the good work. Thanks so much
Thanks, I will, life got in the way at the moment but more coming for sure, this means alot.
Whist is great
Considering buying Kluster and Pancake Pile-up. Cheers!
How did you calculate the overall rankings?
Each commentator on the 9 youtube channels made a top 10 list, 1st place got 10 points and 10th place got 1 point. Every mention got an additional point. The full dash and data is on my website in description. Thanks for asking.
@@WhatCanIPlay. similar to what did for Dice Tower overall top 10.
sorry i havent seen that, one but its totally possible its been done before. not an original idea, just how i do my own personal research for things.@@Ian-R-Wilz
@@WhatCanIPlay. it wasn’t a video I just did it on my own and sent them the results. Was hoping maybe they would do something short with it.
@@Ian-R-Wilz thats so cool. I tend to make more videos that use data, happy to have you apart of the community you fellow data lover :)
Was thinking of making a video like this. Bit I would never be able to match your production, and I am not native english. Still you only have 600+ views. I tought the audiance for this kind of content would be bigger.
thank you that is so kind. Unfortunatly this is my first video so it will take a bit before the algorithm takes off
This is a cool idea for a video! I'm shocked you didn't include ThinkerThemer, though.
I'm very new to this community, so my choices were based just on what i could find on UA-cam search. When i revisit this topic or something similar next time I'll ask my community and do more rigor for sure. Thanks for the comment and constructive feedback
@@WhatCanIPlay. Sorry, I didn't really mean it to be criticism. Just goes to show how different our YouTUbe algorithms can be! But yeah, I do recommend that channel. :) Also Board Games in a Minute.
@@biyukun thank you!
Dear Lord, seeing all those leftist board game, reviewers made me ill
1. Why are some content creators chosen? You left out some big ones, though you say “I looked at all the UA-camrs” with some caveat that doesn’t apply. Maybe these are the channels you prefer? So it’s kind of biased and not comprehensive, but that’s what your caveat should be. 2. I thought your video would be more data driven, but the majority of your video is just reusing clips from other channels - did you ask their permission? Is permission required? That should be addressed in your video. 3. I would recommend BGG to be included. Seems like a good second step.
Hey, thanks for your comment. 1. Firstly, I'm very new to the board game community and for that I'm learning alot, something I do with everything is use data to inform me, so as with all my videos so far it has been answering a question I want answered, then I do the research into it. So put simply, I may not know of all the youtubers, I simply used youtube search and search for top 10 board games of 2023, and went from there, I started this back in December and was well aware new youtubers made their videos, I was chasing some to try include all, but frankly I stopped. If some day this channel takes off and I have a community and help I assure you more rigor will be applied. So it's a factor of time , resources and well since I didn't really expect it to get some traction bit of me just wanting to get it done. 2. As for permission, it's covered under fair use, if I had to ask for permission this video would never have come out. Ideally I would have been able to present the data and give my opinion on them, but I have not played them, so the video felt empty not giving some thoughts on each game, that is why I choose to include their thoughts. Again as I learn and get better at this whole UA-cam thing I wish for a different end product, maybe even a collab with them giving me a new unseen clip reexplaining their thoughts, but something like would be a massive undertaking and well frankly someone with my following would not be taken seriously if I were to approach. As for using BGG. Everyone has access to that resource I wanted to provide a new data set, as I value word of mouth recommendations from trusted sources. I appreciate your feedback, and I'm listening. I too want these videos to be better, but unfortunately I have a lot to learn both about boardgames, data manipulation, editing and youtube. I'm not an expert in any of these, just above average and capable at it. And that's the niche I'm trying carve out for my self. I hope if you come back 1 year from now you would notice improvements on all fronts.
UA-camrs are overrated. They’ll play a game twice and never again chasing the hotness. Shame on you
Possibly, then by your assumption this list has more rigor behind it as it would combine their amount of plays giving a more rounded view. But totally understand, as I grow I would love to increase the size of my dataset with community input.
@@WhatCanIPlay. my comment of more sarcasm than anything lol
@@shortydancer fair
In my opinion some of the best games of 2023 are: Thunder Road Vendetta Dune Imperium Uprising Unmatched Adventures Tales to Amaze Pirates of Maracaibo World Wonders Forest Shuffle The Witcher Old World has to be the most boring, ultra slow and long, expensive game I have ever tried and already after the 2nd play we sold it, totally not worth the time and money.
This is why I made the list everyone has different opinions, whilst this list is only 9 channels and about 15 different opinions, its crazy how they differ so much. This is why I love data, it whilst the underlining metrics are subjective when you wash it with more data sets, you get some stand outs. I hope in future as my channel grows i can increase the data sets to my community and beyond.
Hey some compilations here! Neat idea! Liked and subbed!
The legend him self! I had you in my list but couldn't find your 2023 specific games. I plan on doing similar concept but with alot more rigour for games of all time soon, I hope I can include you. Appreciate the support!
and to clafiy i mean top 10, since your guys video was top 3 i found it hard to manipulate the data to work with out skewing, something i aim to get better with in time.
This was great! Subscribed ! Would be great to see more games that worked well with Ethan as he ages. I also have a 2.5year old and constantly looking for games that work well with them
Thank you so much for the kind words and sub, this means alot. Yeah will definitely revisit this as he gets older.
Thanks for putting this together 😊 I'm subscribed to most of them but it's hard to remember who liked what😅

Glad you enjoyed it! I'm thrilled this video is doing well. Thank you
Games that we love too play over and over again in my group are framework, dragonkeepers, saint petersburg, its a wonderful world, rebuilding seatle, san juan, gizmos, space base, jump drive, stone age, lords of waterdeep, hadara, trails of tucana, splendor duel, scout, five tribes, ticket to ride, five tribes, parade and caesar's empire. I think these are great gateway games that are still enjoyalbe for most gamers that I know. Welcome to the hobby.
I might have to give these a look, as this community grows ill be looking to you guys for recommendations so this is awesome, thanks
