Make PROFESSIONAL Backing Tracks with Logic Pro X!
Join the Patreon Community - www.patreon.com/drumelectric
I've made videos on how to run backing tracks from Mainstage, QLab, and Ableton. But I forgot one software that I use all the time! Logic. It's not my go-to for backing tracks because of some limitations, but it's slowly become better over the years and incorporates a lot more features than it used to. So here's how to run backing tracks in Logic.

    i'm hvaing an issue where some samples are loading and others are not? i am manipulating them within the same ableton session, same tracks, same sample rates wav 44100 16 bit etc - is there a limit on minimum or maximum amount of time for a sample? im not sure why i was able to load p 2 out of 5 samples and the remainder are "blank" when i hit the pad :(

      I appreciate the comment! I left the video up in as there were lots of comments saying similar to yours, and I was hoping people would spot that. But I’ll put it on Unlisted and make an updated video to avoid any further problems. Problem is that it can run backing tracks, they’ve just got to be under 12MB. Wish I’d known that when I made the video!

    I've just got the pad and notice that: There's no memory in the pad that won't allow you to load new wav sound to save in the module. You have to load it in the SD card and problem is the processing is slow. If you play live and need to switch kit to kit and 4 pads are loaded from the SD card, then it takes time to load the wave file. It takes quite a bit of time depends on how big is your wave file. And this is insufficient while playing live and need to change kit right the way to the next song. Don't know if there's any trick to faster the loading process...? Thanks!

    If you send a midi signal to Ableton for HI HAT and use a pedal such as a Roland FD 9 is the response on Ableton binary with playing a sample that is either open or closed? Or does it perform like a real HI HAT and have the nuances of slightly muting the open HI HAT if you are only pressing the foot pedal partially?

    Hi! Some time ago I saw Nathaniel Townsley playing some music during his clinic and he just had a mobile phone! Unfortunately I didn’t ask him about that but it was amazing. The guy just plugged in into a mixer and started playing. One recorded file on his devise, full mix for the audience and the same full mix but with a click in his ears. Could you please explain export setting for a file like that! I would really appreciate that!

    • @DrumElectric
      @DrumElectric 18 днів тому

      Hey! Great question. Without seeing his full setup, there could be two things going on here. The first: He's panned backing tracks to the left and click to the right, sending just the track to the sound engineer and just the click to himself. He'll then take a feed from the sound engineer with (most likely) his backing tracks and then the kit into his personal mixer. The second: I haven't tried this personally yet, but there may now be options to run multi-track backing tracks from the new iPhones (and I presume some androids) as they have USB-C. So he may be running his phone into an audio interface, and then the same methods as the first way I've written above. It's highly likely the first one though, a simple and really effective way of doing it!

  • @joshallenriffs

    Currently in the process of creating backing tracks in Logic Pro X. Going to run a Behringer XR16 live and a splitter from an iPad running logic to control volumes of each part of the backing tracks. Is this wise or should I get an audio interface/use the XR16 as an interface? Cheers great video

    • @DrumElectric
      @DrumElectric 18 днів тому

      Completely depends on the setup! Having an audio interface gives you a buffer. If the XR16 dies for some reason, you can still go into another desk for the backing tracks without setting anything up. That being said, it's incredibly rare for that to happen, so if going straight into the XR16 works for you, do that until it doesn't work!

  • @MrHenrikBank
    @MrHenrikBank 20 днів тому

    Thanks a lot for this video :) How about tracks with variable tempo - if you have a midi tempotrack from Cubase - can you somehow use that in Ableton Live - so that the tempo is dynamic within the song?

    • @DrumElectric
      @DrumElectric 18 днів тому

      Thanks for the thanks! :) Great question! I automate the tempo in Ableton all the time, but I've never exported from one software into the other. If there's a way to export MIDI data from Cubase to your tracks, I don't see why that wouldn't work! You may have to manually automate the tempo though. A long method, but definitely works.

    • @MrHenrikBank
      @MrHenrikBank 18 днів тому

      @@DrumElectric Managed to find a workaround. Had Cubase to detect the tempo and create a tempo track. Then I created an empty midi track and exported that as a midi file and when importing that file back into ableton it contained the tempo automation... :) Easy actually just needed a push in the right direction :)

      Without going into your Ableton project, I wouldn’t know! The things to check are: - Ableton Outputs: Have you selected an output device? - Track Output: Is an output selected on the click and cues track? - Master Output: are the click and cues tracks being sent to the master output and does that have an output itself? The only other thing is to double click onto the device itself, onto one of the samples, and make sure it’s outputting when you hit the little ‘play’ button

      @@DrumElectric Hi, my project is the one you have described here and I went and downloaded everything as described and opened the project, so it's just the 'project' to create a click track. I went into the audio settings and made the inputs and outputs through my Focusrite 2i2 as per the instructions. I will check the 2nd and 3rd bullet points when I fire up next. When I am building the notes in midi there is no sound either so there's definitely a settings issue, probably simple but I am very new to this. Thanks - works great from my mac - do you know of a simple way to trigger and run lights also from Ableton without a ton of programming - maybe something like a random generator based on the audio coming from the Ableton backing track - thanks

      @DrumElectric Місяць тому

      That's a great question! Unfortunately none that I know of, as a random generator would need programming, ironically! For an easy setup, a lot of lights come with built in patches that are random. You could pair this with a simple 'Black Out' function should you want it, where the lights go dark after a song and come back in for the next song. Would still require a small amount of programming, though

    at the end around @11:55 did you use a Foot Switch to change the Bt-1 from the cowbell sample to a clap sample? Also where did you get these clean sounding samples from?

    • @DrumElectric
      @DrumElectric Місяць тому

      For this video, I had the triggers automated to change through Ableton. But you can absolutely use a footswitch to change it if Ableton isn't available. For the samples, they're just part of my sample collection! I've made a video on "Where to Get Samples" should you need some pointers

    can you "add" a 5th trigger. In other words - use the dual function of the RT-30HR AND also have a BT-1. And then use an external pad like a Pd-8 and a Kt-10. or is this too many slots?

    • @DrumElectric
      @DrumElectric Місяць тому

      I've responded with the potential answer to this on the "How to Get a Cross-Stick Sound with Triggers" video comment, but you can only use 5 triggers with a different module. The SPD-SX specifically only supports 4 triggers

  • @ThaKid14
    @ThaKid14 Місяць тому

    Can you not have dual trigger with the RT-30HR? ie. one sample sound on the batter and one on the "sub" or the outside/hoop of the drum? I don't currently own a BT-1. I was rehearsing today and changing some sample settings on the RT-30 as "trig 1" and i always got double triggering / false trigger on all aspects of the drum even though I had two samples set up on it. Edit: you literally mentioned this at the end of the video and didn't have a solution either. To further this question - can you add a 5th trigger? I currently route trig 1/2 to a RT-30HR and a RT-30K and then trig 3 and four to a Roland V drum pad and a Roland KT-9

    • @DrumElectric
      @DrumElectric Місяць тому

      So yes, you can have two trigger sounds with the RT-30HR, but as you've mentioned, you're more likely to get double triggering from the centre of the drum with the RT-30HR (or single trigger) rather than the BT-1. This is an old video, so I need to look back into this to make sure all the information is still correct with today's knowledge! For a 5th trigger - you can if your module supports it. For example, the SPD-SX only supports 4 triggers, whereas the SPD-SX Pro is something like 8

    Hi Harry is there any way to Listen the sounds of Spd-Sx Pro using the Usb Cable, as the usb capable of (USB COMPUTER port : USB B (High-Speed USB, USB-AUDIO, USB-MIDI, App)) throuGh Sx Pro App without Master/Phones PhysiCaL ConneCtions?

      Just replied to your other comment, but from my knowledge, you can't pass audio through USB annoyingly. That would be great, though!

    Hi Harry Question, I have a sampled sound for an Eagles song. I have it loaded on card and working fine other than it seems to take a few seconds to load. Anyway my question is when I trigger the sample is there not a way to stop it early if needed by hitting the pad again. Thank you

    • @DrumElectric
      @DrumElectric Місяць тому

      Great question! There should be a setting on that pad that says either "Alt" or "Shot" (or something similar, I may be mixing that with the SPD-SX settings!). If you use the down arrow when on that pad, you should see more settings
