Good catch! I was being fancy and using the triggers through the SPD-SX and into Ableton where they were then automated. I made a video on it called “How to Automate Drum Pads with Ableton”

I did add a silent tack and set as a leader to adjust the tempo of each track in a set. Everything that is placed under the blank track will follow that tempo.

Sounds like the output of channel 3 is mono. If you plugged into channel 3 and 4 your problem may be fixed! If you plug into channel 4 only, do you have the same issue?

Should be able to, yes! The audio track should come through on QLab. So if anything, what you’re doing is easier!

It’s incredible! So I believe there is a setting under the same menu to get the tempo data from something like Ableton (or any software) via the MIDI out/MIDI in option. I’ve managed to get it working before, but it was patchy and annoyingly didn’t always get it to work. So I’m working to see if I can find a more reliable method!

I use the song sheet iPad app called Stage Traxx 3 which has Bluetooth midi send /receive capabilities. I’ve figured out so far that when I pull up a chart on the Stage Traxx 3 it will change the patch on my Td-17, my Tm-1 and the spd sx pro. I just want the spdsx pro to change the tempos in the way I described in my previous post. I have contacted Stage Traxx 3 support and they say it’s possible. I just haven’t figured it out. Any help would be appreciated.

If I’m understanding you right - the reason for saving is just purely because you can select the different outputs in the app. You can absolutely just save it as a stereo file and do it as you’re saying to save space. Same with the file type - MP3 is absolutely fine! I haven’t tried an external hard drive yet, but I do know the iPads work with them (I’ve used a 2TB one before), I just haven’t used them with this app

That’s because it’s a Head + Rim trigger so it has sensors for both. I would look at using a ‘mono’ jack cable to make sure only one signal is coming into the sample pad. That, or look at getting just the single trigger which is the RT-30H

Fortunately the Alesis website has a full pack to download for free! It’s a little hidden away on their website, but I made a video on it called “Where to Download Samples”

Mines done this too! It’s terrifying. Unfortunately a known problem with dust/gradual waring down of the power button and electronics underneath. Mine generally powers back on after a while. I know some people have had luck where they’ve held the button down and whacked the top three pads, or the pads closest to the power button

What happens if you export the tracks to get a lower file size? I managed to get a 3 minute track on there. Totally understand what you’re saying though - this isn’t something I came across when making the video, if I had known, I absolutely would have mentioned it!

Absolutely there is! You can automate everything of the click using the built in automation on ableton. Just use the ‘A’ key on the keyboard and the automation settings should come up. Then select the click option you want, and bosh!

I’m not sure exactly as I don’t have one to hand, but my presumption would be to send the bass drum out of output 1, snare output 2, etc on your module and then put them in the separate inputs of the audio interface. Some kits might let you do this with USB, but I presume you’d need a laptop for that

Great question, and thank you for the kind words! In all honesty, it entirely depends on budget as all of those would work incredibly well. If you’re looking at cheaper options, I’d look into the Alesis SamplePad 4, Alesis SamplePad Pro, or Alesis Strike Multipad. If you want slightly more robust but more expensive, then the Roland SPD-SX or SPD-SX Pro is what you want to look for. I highly recommend checking out @stephanibmusic on Instagram, she’s amazing at doing a very similar thing to you!

Of course! I now have a full Ableton course which breaks down two Ableton rigs I’m currently using if you want an Ableton one, or if you want an updated MainStage one, I can absolutely do that!

How would you like it set? In theory it shouldn’t make any difference as it’s not a left hand/right hand piece of gear!

@@DrumElectric Hi, Harry. I used to play acustic drums in the crossed wayt, and I noticed all the kits on the spd come organized for right handed drummers. Its like I should need all the pads in mirror: I used to play: hi hat on the right, snare in the middle, "chancha" (big tom) on the left and down, tom 1 (low) up and left, and tom 2 (high) up and right. But everything seems to be backwards for a left handed person who plays crossed... :( What should I do? change pad by pad in every kit? Is there another way? Thank you

@chantalrosengurt4820 ah that completely makes sense! Unfortunately without any software with this pad (as it’s very old now!) I think the only way to swap everything would be to painfully change each pad ☹️

You can! There’s a ‘.txt’ file when you plug it into USB that you edit and save which has all the MIDI data being sent. Pretty cool!

I’ve also had some cross talk issues with the click! It seems to be better when I don’t pan them and do it out of separate outputs of an audio interface. In terms of which side to pan them, doesn’t matter at all! Clicks to the right and tracks to the left is also great!

I would reformat the USB as both the SPD-SX and SPD-SX Pro can be very particular with it

Great question! If you go into Menu -> Pad, there should be a setting in there with ‘ALT’ selected, or ‘SHOT’. I made a video on this a couple years ago named “What Does ‘ALT’ and ‘SHOT’ Mean” and that should fix your problem!

Just to make sure I understand - do you mean multiple songs in one Ableton project and having the different clicks? Or do you mean one Ableton project per song, and so multiple Ableton projects?

This is a strange one! Is that the same if you change the sound of the click? Sometimes it can be the click samples themselves

Great question! With a band, I would get a little mixer and send the headphone output of the EAD to the mixer, then get the sound guy to send you a band mix. Then you plug your headphones into the mixer and you have control over what you hear

@@DrumElectric so using just the mic from the ead to mic the drums up myself. The sound guy doesn’t need to send me the drums his end? Just the back line and backing track. I’m worried about delay and bleed on stage? I’m thinking of not using the mini desk and I’ll just ask the sound guy to set the levels I wish for each instrument going straight into the ead?!

So with the USB to the computer, the SPD has two modes. The one you’re seeing is “Wave MGR” (which stands for ‘wave manager’) and that’s connecting to the wave manager software. You won’t be able to do anything on the SPD itself, but you will be able to import audio via that software on a computer. If you want to use the MIDI through USB, then go into Menu -> Setup -> Option, and change the ‘USB Mode’ to ‘Audio/MIDI’ using the plus and minus buttons. In regards to the sampling on a pad, are you trying to record over it in the SPD itself? What happens if you make the sample on a computer and import into the SPD?
