ISÁK is an exciting new fusion of the traditional Sámi artform of joik, and the urban synths of east London. Fronted by Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen, and with producer James Daniel Njie Eriksen and drummer Aleksander Kostopoulos the trio combines in a new, untraditional and engaging way.

The song/yoik was originally made as a soundtrack for the movie The Kautokeino Rebellion, which is about a real event in 1852, where the Sami in Kautokeino after a long period of oppression and exploitation, attacked representatives of the Norwegian state. Elle, who had a small child, a son, was punished with many years in prison. Two other rebels were punished with death, an event that has left a strong mark on Sami society for over a hundred years, and which led to them not daring to protest against the superior authority until 130 years later. It’s the soundtrack from a movie she’s starring in here in Norway. It’s her 1st role. Ella as well as her character Ester in the movie, are indigenous Sámi, and it’s about her own journey of decolonization, healing generational trauma, and take back her culture as well as protesting against the building of a damn on indigenous Sámi lands by the a Norwegian government!
