Welcome to StereoNiche, the vintage audio channel.
For most of my life, I have been a big fan of audio gear. In my youth back in the 70's, anytime we would visit a local shopping area, I would always make my way to the high end audio stores and drool over all of the cool gear. While cars were nice, my eyes and ears were focused on audio gear I would hope to one day own.
Many years ago, I realized I never had one of those awesome stereos I dreamed about in my youth. So, I set out to find one. Well, soon after, that effort turned into collecting which eventually led to the creation of StereoNiche where I like to showcase vintage audio gear for others to see!

The Biggest, Most Powerful Receiver of 1977 - the Marantz 2500

In 1977, there was only one, the Marantz 2500. By far, the biggest, baddest receiver on the market. At 250 watts, the next receiver was a very distant second place. It would take another year for other manufacturers to catch up. Icon series goes on sale Q4 of 2025 / beautiful high end gear. I saw them at CES and was ultra excited!
In my opinion, it's shameful for McIntosh selling out to a pretend Audiophile company (Bose) and now jeapodìsing their loyal staff. Another dark day for the Audiophile community. I do not and will not purchase basement Bose garbage.
Title of the background audio?
Beginning of the end for MacIntosh.
It’s really sad that these fine audio companies that have been around for decades and have gotten plenty of my money over the years, are now struggling. As a retired Broadcast Engineer, I guess I’m puzzled about the reason why the general public is no longer interested in fine audio, and the equipment that makes it possible. AM radio is dead, the only thing keeping it in business now are the FM translators. Radios are currently being manufactured that offer only FM reception. FM radio stations are struggling as the younger audience prefers commercial free streaming instead of FM with it’s endless number of commercial spots that aren’t generating enough cash flow for station owners anymore! Audio tape and cassette technology is gone, along with the CD industry, for the most part. I’m happy to see the vinyl record industry making a comeback along with fine quality turntables being manufactured once again. Maybe audio streaming is somewhat to blame for this decline in high fidelity audio equipment. I don’t know. Your thoughts on the subject❓
I'll NEVER give my money to bose, therefore Mac died as a company the second bose bought it.
I think all this companies are dead and that's why they being sold left and right.
Looking forward to the black and green Bose Wave Radio with blue VU meters!
Massive brand dilution for McIntosh and Sonus Faber... Sad to see
I said it when the news first broke. Bose is going to F with Mac. I know Bose. I worked for Bose. It's an arrogant Boston company that knows nothing about high end audio. Which means they don't respect Mac or care about its long standing history. Case in point the firing Mac's independent manufacturer reps. Bose cares only about two things, sales volume and profit margins. I knew Bose wouldn't stay still long and just leave Mac alone. What does anyone expect from a company that spent 100 million dollars last year on advertisements alone.
I heard that Bose is owned by MIT University in Mass. Do they still own it?
MIT is a majority share holder but is not involved in management
McIntosh just keep moving from one sugar daddy to the next.
Run your company right, and you won't get bought out.
Hey Scott, missed this one, Happy New Year!
Sir, please talk about that massive cassette deck under the Nakamichi Dragon.
That is an RX-505 model and will be featured in an upcoming video.
Bet: Soon to be made in Mexico, China, Japan, or Korea. So sad.
If the Binghamton factory closes, then McIntosh instantly loses credibility. Quickest way to a brand harakiri ever.
Thanks for the update Scott, always good to hear from you even if the news isn't the best. It's unfortunate that we live in a world dominated by greed and profit. A lot of great companies have come and gone over the decades and this will always ring true unless something drastic changes economically. I for one see this as a positive, because if Bose hadn't stepped in, Mac would most likely be another financial casualty and cease to exist. Change is constant and if you fail to evolve with the times, you fall behind. I wish we could figure out a way for people to have what they want at a price they can afford, this seems like it's becoming more and more difficult and drastic measure need to be and are being taken. Cheers from North of the Border!
Indeed. Just another audio story to tell really. Better hang on to the gear we have on hand.
did I not call this sir? SOB's
Bose has the reputation it has with audiophiles for a REASON. I would be shocked if Bose doesn't try to dilute the brand by slapping the McIntosh name on cheap crap and try passing it off as quality. It is also very likely that Bose will cut costs on McIntosh legacy products. Bose is know for "bean counter" ruthlessness that will likely destroy the McIntosh brand thru a death of a thousand cuts. I hope I am wrong, but we will see whether I get to say "I told you so...." ( I made this comment a month ago. Imagine what the "I told you so" will be a year from now.....)
Yep. Bluetooth speakers and ear buds.
All those spare parts for mac support are getting sold. Long term support is going away for those mac's.
more than anything, Bose charges top dollar for everything they sell. you can bet they will position McIntosh to command big prices. if that means selling the at HiFi shops only, thats how it will be.
The present younger generation isn't interested in building up a component system like we did pre-internet. Maybe some sales in sound bars and bookshelf systems may continue, but the big speaker / big amp systems I'm afraid are a thing of the past. This is, of course, my opinion.
No highs, no lows...must be McIntosh powering the Bose
Bought mine in the '80s just to see what all the hype was about. I never used them very much but they did see duty as my front speakers in my '74 Camaro for a while. They're so heavy they seldom moved, which was great since that was not safe ... pointed straight up on the floor they were really nice. Many years later they were part of my garage setup run by a Sansui 221 I had since Junior HIgh. As I recall, that setup also used the first AirTunes going (first AirPort Express.) I still have them somewhere but would want to modify them today for better sound. FYI, the metal grills pull off with a small pick.
Thanks for the update Scott
I have never considered McIntosh, because I personally do not care for the aesthetics of the equipment. However, I do have Sonus Faber products. I will never buy a Sonus Faber product again since they are now owned by Bose (Blows). 35 years ago I sold Bose at The Sharper Image. I wasn’t an “audiophile” then, but I still thought that it was overpriced garbage.
All McIntosh amplifiers will now feature 8 rear firing VU meters and 1 in the front.
I have 670ZX and like it, but can't stand advantage of its calibration facility. Kind of useless function - deck records the same sound without calibration or when calibrated. Do I do something wrong? Is it calibration of azimuth or anything else? (no bias as I understand)...
Good Day. Informative & Encouraging. Thank You.
If you want quality Mac you better buy existing stock.
McIntosh at Best Buy?
It already is in some Magnolia locations.
Audiophile News! I love it Thanks! For keeping us posted
I've seen a few instances of what happens in mergers / downsizing where company sales reps are assigned multiple product lines. How a company compensates their sales reps is a key factor with how that works out because sales reps have a natural tendency to put their sales efforts into whatever line or products brings them the greatest personal reward for their time and effort. Sadly, I can't say I've personally seen a situation where one of the product lines didn't wind up getting the short end of the stick, which in turn contributes to declining sales for the line (It's hard to have sales when no-one is 'selling')
That doesn't make sense, your typical Bose buyer isn't going to buy McIntosh,he/she will sell to the appropriate demographic.
@@johnbravo7542 - This is a common misconception. Sales reps don't sell to end users. They pitch product lines to the buyers for Dealers like Crutchfield that sell both - and when that rep has to pitch both Bose and McIntosh they will work harder to sell the line that gets them the biggest return. Typically that means the one with the higher margins. The mechanism they use to sweeten the deal usually has to do with offering volume discounts to get more sales of the gear with the highest margins because that raises their $$ sales numbers. Buyers may do the same. That is, they'll offer to commit to larger purchases if they can get a deal. In any case, be it the Dealer or the rep, if they can benefit by getting more Bose sold at the cost of selling fewer McIntosh because of lower margins and smaller numbers, that's how it goes. Conversely, if there are high margins on McIntosh, a sales rep will be happy to push fewer high margin products than many lower margin Bose products as long as the bottom line works out for them --- or, in some cases, it's same bottom line for less sales rep hours invested (something I've also seen). The corporation also looks at what lines make the most profit, but they MAY (rarely) decide to provide incentives to reps for selling less profitable lines for marketing and depth reasons. Don't think the dealers have particular product line loyalties like end users do, either. Certainly not the big dealers. Inventory, cash flow, and advance orders come into play as well as which products get them the most return on wholesale. I.e. they're looking to make money. They usually prefer to sell ten of something a week rather than one a month. Of course the end customers for Bose and McIntosh will be different demographics - but to buy someone needs to be selling - and whether a Dealer is going to sell either one is based on how much sense it makes for their business. Don't forget to factor in the fact that there are new customers who don't have a pre-existing Bose / McIntosh history or bias. They get sold to, too. The one sure thing is that if you have dedicated reps, they'll sell their own line as hard as they can. The downside is that when you've got overlapping lines you wind up with internal competition that can get pretty tribal and counter productive.
How did McIntosh get themselves in a position where they sold themselves out?
McIntosh hasn't actually been owned by anybody named McIntosh since 1977. The company was sold to Clarion in Japan in 1990. After getting sold to another Japanese company, it was then sold to an Italian company in 2012. Since then, McIntosh has been sold to Fine Sounds Group and subsequently to Highlander Partners before being acquired by Bose. So it's not like they have been under one ownership until now.
@@LarcR Well, well. Then, whats all the fuss. Thanks for that
Thank you for the update Scott. You're a trusted source. I do hope Bose doesn't implement cost cutting measures in the McIntosh manufacturing process!
Of course they will,McIntosh engineers will go too.
Oh, they will! I'm sure Bose is already looking at offshore manufacturing possibilities for the plethora of new cheap Bose/Mac gear on its way.
Bose is sold at mass market stores like Best Buy as well as dedicated audio dealers. Likely Bose will cheapen the quality which slowly reduces the desirability of the brand name. Its interesting though that the testing site Audio Science Research prefers mass market Denon equipment over McIntosh since McIntosh apparently has some traditional proprietary electronic quirks that its the objective measurements.
Too bad McIntosh got their business in such a bad situation they sold themselves out.
ASR argues a Apple dongle is all you need I wouldn’t put much stock in them
One thing that concerns me about this, is will Mcintosh, along with some online retailers like Audio Classics, still service/repair vintage equipment? I ask because I have my eye on some vintage Mcintosh equipment, such as the Mcintosh C39 preamp, and the Mcintosh MC7150 power amp. Appreciate any prompt replies/answers, and thank you all in advance.
It begins. This time next year you'll see McIntosh-branded earbuds at Wal-Mart. McIntosh has about five years before it ends forever. I predicted this when I heard that Bose bought the company. They will destroy it, and it will be sad to see it go.
Current McIntosh equipment should be a good investment if future models as you suggest have poorer performance. Buy McIntosh, enjoy it for a few years, then sell at a profit.
McIntosh destroyed themselves by getting themselves into a position the owners sold out.
@@buzzcrushtrendkill Possibly. But I think it was a shift in how Americans buy things. Over the last 50 years, the average American has gotten to the point where they wouldn't know a quality product if is sat in their lap and called them "Mama!". Quality is often the last thing on our minds when we look to purchase something. We look for either economy or name recognition, and little else. Brands like McIntosh, which are unknown to the masses and which are far from economical, are a hard sell to such buyers.
Bose will probably close all amp productions and focus on ear buds and sound bars
I wonder how long it will be before McIntosh manufacturing is moved offshore.
Good question!
As long as Charlie Randall is leading the brand, never! But if he’s forced out or retires… I fear the worst!
Imediately!
@@Dave_SchmitzI can hear the sound of inevitability.
Thanks for keeping up on the Bose/McIntosh news.
You are quite welcome!
I'm waiting for the SET el34 McWave Radio🤣
THAT will be one to hear for sure!
Thanks for clarifying this Scot. I watched another UA-cam vid earlier in the morning that discussed this and he made it confusing to understand. I appreciate your slide illustration.
Thanks JB! As they say, a picture paints a thousand words.
@@stereoniche After I watched your vid I contacted Butch’s Sound and Vision and spoke to Butch (with whom I have purchased all of my Mac gear). I asked if he was a McIntosh Sales Rep or a McIntosh Independent Sales Rep. He said neither. He’s a McIntosh Dealer and isn’t going anywhere. His physical store has been selling McIntosh, Carver, Sunfire, Sony, Sonus Faber, B&W ,etc. for decades. He’s going to send out an email to his customers clarifying all this for us but it certainly can be confusing. Again thanks for the vid.
That was probably Lou Hamilton at Audible Elegance? I saw that a few moments ago myself - his presentation could be a case of not sufficient detail provided by Bose?
@@fonkenful it was. Thoughts on my reply above regarding Butch?
@@jb.2986 I’m inclined to think we’re all - including retailers with long established relationships dealing directly with McIntosh during the many prior changes in ownership - at the waiting to find out stage, but it hard to imagine Bose would shoot themselves in the foot; I’m thinking they just want to tighten things up cost wise. I can remember a famous joke about Amar specifying a change in the design of basket for 901 driver to use only 3 screws - which would be a total of 18 per pair - could be an apocryphal urban myth, or maybe not?
Looks like Mac reps are going to have to re-apply for what jobs remain.
Or, it could be they leverage those relationships and push other brands into those locations.
Looks like the change is just the elimination of "independent" sales personnel. Without data, hard to say if this is a good idea or not. Sales seem to be tightening for the audio industry lately.
Indeed. Any statement of what will happen in the future is pure speculation at this point.
Hey, love your channel, very interesting and informative. Please keep the video coming. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Home audio has pretty much completely died. It's really sad!
First
You are the WINNER!!!! 🤣
It was not that long ago that Masimo purchased Sound United and it seems that when it was announced there where plenty of people that did not care for the fact a non audio company was buying a group of audio companies. I do not think Denon, Polk or Marantz will be disappearing any time soon and it would be a shame if they did. Oh it infuriates me that Bose purchased McIntosh! I can agree it is a good thing McIntosh will continue but Bose could greatly cheapen the brand to the point they will be a shadow of there former selves. I do not trust Bose to not cheapen out the McIntosh brand! I am surprised Acoustic Research makes enough money to stay afloat, not that they are not a good brand. I am surprised RCA did not disappear many years ago! And when you say the consumers taste has changed more like many consumers have gotten cheap and do not value good sound! There are just to many people who are ok with cheap Bluetooth speakers that do not product good sound and they do not even produce stereo separation. To many people want cheap junk and do not care about the quality anymore and hence the popularity of people listening to music with there phones and music just being in the background instead of really listening to the music. And the jury is still out on the company buying out Voxx International!
I guess it's just me but all the stuff seems super complicated where do you get the wires where do you get the connectors how do you attach the stuff to your music system I have no clue
There are simply fewer locations to buy speaker wire and connections than there used to be. Lowes in my area does still have a good bit of basic things like speaker wire, but most are buying it online now via Amazon, eBay, etc.. I would recommend doing a hand drawn connection diagram first to confirm what you need, then go buy it. Be sure to measure the distance from your speakers to your amp/receiver for each side to ensure you have enough wire.
