Jolly Roger Aviation
Приєднався 21 жов 2017
My flying career started when I joined the Navy in 1995. I flew T-34s, T-45s and the F/A-18 A/B/C/D/G models before entering the airlines in 2006. I’ve been flying the Boeing 737 for 16 years.
With all those years of flying high performance fighters and now airliners, the one thing that’s been missing is my own plane. I started researching and soul searching everything from building my own RV-14 to a Kitfox, a Duke to a Debonair. The one thing I realized is whatever I end up with, it needs to be fast!
Enter the Lancair Legacy. Since the kits aren’t offered any longer, I decided to start searching for a used Legacy, easier said than done! Well I finally found one and it’s right in my back yard! This channel will take you on my journey as I transition from fighter & airline pilot back to the roots of general aviation. To be honest, it’s intimidating! I haven’t flown a piston powered aircraft in over 27 years! I’ve never flown a constant speed prop! It’s time, let’s Gooooooo!

This is why I bought the Lancair Legacy
We fly our Lancair legacy from Arlington, Washington (KAWO) to Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho (65S) to go fly fishing and hiking. Beautiful scenery in North Idaho including the Moyie River, Kootenai River and Snow Creek Falls

First impressions, Lancair Legacy. Is it really a fighter jet with a prop?

13:44 Why was the landing that rough? Stall landing but from too high? The Legacy is a rocket! In live with that beautiful bird, not to mention the astonishing view out of the canopy ❤ Fly safe, sir. Greetings from Belgium, and happy New Year.
It looks like Mount Rainier to me. But I'm gonna guess Mount Baker, cuz no one else has.
Did you do a good lean before take off? I;m sure you did.
I tried to go but a baggage handler removed me from the suitcase.
Did you smacked him
This made me laugh. Well done
Щаслива людина)! З таким гарним літаком!
The use of the speed brakes are used to slow down but you are forgetting you DO NOT want to chop thr power at altitude and “shock cool the engine ! That is where the speed brakes come in
What was your KTAS at 115...level.
I’ve been getting just over 220KTAS at cruise
@@JollyRogerAviation Sounds great. I thought you said 220 on the descent,Thanks.
@@garybaldwin1061if it’s smooth enough I descend at 250 indicated
I've heard of getting a leg up on the competition but this is taking it to extremes.
Oh sh…!
Here its common to see the small choppers with a hanging saw blade. With 5 and 6 blades. Clearing power lines.
@@countryracer69 yeah, here too. But usually not with a worker hanging upside down from the lines.
That's a horrible situation!
Agreed, no bueno
Driving by that airport in Bonners right now.
Nice! Bits beautiful up there
@@JollyRogerAviationNow just need to get you to Bull lake in Montana.
I spy......fly rods. 🎣
Had a blast with them too 😬
🇦🇺😎
I like it because it has the Trump air paint job! Trump 2024🇺🇸!
Rainer, on a good day barely visible from my home here at YYJ
Nice!
Rainer
Looks like Mt. Rainer.
Just have Scotty beam you there. 😜
lol right?
bad ass!
Thing smokes!
I love McCall too. Right on the lake. Traffic is pretty bad now though. I love the airport too. You flew just north of Joseph, Oregon where we live. Have you ever flown over the mountains by Joseph? We flew backcountry airstrips in Idaho and came back to Joseph Valley with the mountains and said that Joseph area was the prettiest. Maybe we will see you here. Also, I love Peugeot Sound area with all the water and beautiful islands. Thanks for sharing.
I haven’t flown into Joseph. What’s the runway like? I’d like to check it out someday!
@@JollyRogerAviation the runway is excellent. Lear jets have landed on it. They have a free courtesy car too.
@@cq7415 I’ll definitely check it out!
Question- was thinking of flying into Joseph this weekend and taking Tina fly fishing. Only problem is we can’t find rental cars anywhere! Tried La Grande and Baker City too. Do you know of any local rental places?
Love flying to BVS, the winds always seem calm and favor 29. Post a real time video so we can see how fast that girl is!
I think there’s plenty of real-time clips in my videos. Occasionally I’ll speed them up to show more of the pattern or landing. Crosses the numbers at 100kts, touchdown about 80
Sweet lord that is one beautiful airplane
Thank you!
Just a friendly reminder there is a pretty good airshow happening in Moses Lake in a couple days for father's day weekend. Fly-in is available
Ughhhh yeah there’s one in Olympia too but we’re racing boats in St John on Saturday!
@@JollyRogerAviation Oh yeah, I forgot about that. You got this!! I'll be rooting from afar.
Okay, well, now that you’ve owned it for a while does it get hot in there or no?
At lower altitudes in the summer heat…yes! Window shades help a lot!!
#$100hamburger ✈️
Yessss
Great Video! Living and flying in Idaho is a great privilege which I enjoy very much. For those wanting to fly in for a visit to McCall, be aware that in light wind conditions, land Runway 34 and take off Runway 16 is recommended per airport facilities directory so look and listen for planes coming in from both north and south (not to mention we also have a variety of active Nordo planes, so keep your scan going).
Great information about McCall, thanks for sharing!
Was only the crew allowed to use the pole or could passengers dance too like an open mic night?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
After doing your preflight checks. Can you just jump in your Lancair and go anywhere? Or do you have to file a flight plan with somebody? Even if it's a short trip?
This is a great question and one of the reasons I got my own plane. Unlike the airline world where everything I do is on a schedule and an IFR clearance, I can absolutely jump in my Legacy, start it up, take off and fly wherever I want to fly…without talking to anyone, without filing a flight plan! It’s the exact opposite of airline flying lol. However, for safety, you can always file a VFR flight plan and ALWAYS talk to ATC and/or other aircraft in the area!
@JollyRogerAviation Nice -freedom to fly. Fuel and experience, absolutely necessary! That's really Cool.
Oh MAN… absolute perfection. Just ripping down low.
It’s so much fun!
Why hardly any flaps?
As you extend flaps further and further, yes, lift increases but so does drag. In the 737 we most often land with 30-40* of flaps but only takeoff at 5*. Lancair is similar….i land at 40* and takeoff at 10*
Reese the airplane making a cameo!
Reese?
@@JollyRogerAviation the brown and orange 172 you parked next to.
@@SimonButler ohhhhh lol love it!!!
Streamers is ok but The Narrows at Shore Lodge is for sure 5 stars.
I’ll have to try it!
Lancair=perfection
It really is!
What did you expect taking off with the DA of 8800' and NO FLAPS?!?
Look again. Flaps were at 10 as they should have been.
Thank you so much for choosing to not film the flight training and focus on learning. I've had student want to film their training before and i've let them on occasion but I have noticed a significant decrease in their piloting ability when they are attempting to satisfy an audience while flying.
That’s one reason I haven’t been filming lately. I really want to feel 100% comfortable in this plane like I do at work in the Boeing. Once I get there, I’ll start filming again, but I just don’t. I always listen to that inner voice.
I love Aviation, that looks so fun
This plane is a blast! More content coming!
How much dod these cost lol? Like a few hundred bucks lol
Actually I was surprised, the set was only $62
@@JollyRogerAviation oh wow actually reasonable lol 😆
Only legacy i like is the hornet
I love airplanes.
Me too 😬
Eric, you rock! That looks fun. Peace
You rock! 🤙
It looks like a lot of fun flying around in a airplane, beam me up Scotty. The brake pads on my riding lawn mower are really really small.
lol I need to go look at mine now
No big deal, just a typical Summer day at MYL
I could tell the plane wasn’t super excited about getting airborne lol.
I know Mccall is at about 5000', so I assume the 8800' you mention is some pilot terminology, right? I would guess it the effective elevation based on the current weather? This is all new to me, so want to make sure my understanding is correct.
Yes you’re pretty much spot on. It’s the pressure altitude (5,000’) corrected for temperature & humidity. Hotter & more humid air is less dense then cold, dry air and a plane doesn’t perform nearly as well.
Spent many, many summers camping vacations at Goose Lake and hiking into twin lakes to fish. We called the two upper lakes Granite Twin and the other Grassy Twin.
Ahhhh didn’t know that! Thanks!
I'm dying... yall were just like us the first time my wife flew in my new plane. 😂 Former T45 & EA guy guy myself who hadn't flown anything with a prop in 28 years
lol yep, it’s eye opening!
What Headset is your wife using? Looks like a refit of a BOSE
That’s a bose QC 35 with U-fly Mike adapter
I know this is an old video but ForeFlight only shows ADSB (connected to Stratus) traffic while in flight. While not moving, it will show internet traffic… I think they don’t want you relying on delayed data.
Ahhh gotcha, thanks!
Nice. The Lancair must be the precursor for all the light sport aircraft that look like it. Isn't it technically required that you stay above 500feet AGL unless landing? maybe don't make it too obvious :)
No that’s not exactly accurate. Theres very specific verbiage when it comes to that type of thing.
