Strange Tooth-Covered Octopus Caught on Film | Deep Ocean ROV Footage
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
This deepsea Octopus (or Squid) was filmed in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico by a work class ROV. At first we believed this to be a Cirrate Octopus, but now we believe it to be a Vampire Squid/Umbrella Squid. Its limbs were covered with thousands of sharp, curved teeth and it preferred to float around in an umbrella-like posture. It had a three foot wingspan, so if it is a Vampire Squid that ...

    Aside from the Wikipedia entry and other scant articles about the Magnapinna, was there any estimation as to this particular one’s size? I’m truly baffled/frightened/fascinated by this creature

    • @TahoeDeep
      @TahoeDeep Місяць тому

      @BigSwift9 I just recorded another one yesterday. I have about 3 more videos to share and I'll be sure to make one about size. I have some good video with it next to objects I know the size of. I can tell you the deeper you go the larger they get. These are scarce, in an average 180 hours in it's environment you would be lucky to see one once or twice.

      @@TahoeDeepExcited for that! You gave a mantle length estimate of 2.5ft in an earlier comment, pixel scaling the footage they would have a total length of 72ft. What do you think of that?

    • @TahoeDeep
      @TahoeDeep Місяць тому

      @SherlandShrouht-esse honestly I think 2.5 feet is a little big for squid in that video. We have worked very closely to squid with about a 2 foot mantle. I'm my handful of encounters with this squid it seems the smaller squid are less active/ more docile. The larger ones will move quickly either away or do some aggressive maneuvers before darting away. I think in the near future when work is being completed in the 10,000ft to 12,000ft deep range and we have a few thousand hours at that depth you will see magnapina with 2.5 and larger mantles. 72ft seems plausible and I've heard stories of larger.

    I doubt the clicks are for echolocation. Fish can actually make sounds by flexing their abdominal muscles against their swim bladder, to either make drumming or clicking noises. The spotted drum fish as an example, makes drumming noises to attract mates. Danionella cererbrum fish are just a few centimeters long, yet are as loud as a bullet. This too is for communication purposes. I also don’t know of any fish that uses echolocation. I am pretty sure there are some, but there are very little, and most fish use other senses for maneuvering their environment. Blind cave fish as an example, rely on their lateral line system for navigation.

    I am twelve minutes into the podcast, but I have to say I think your work is extremely under appreciated! In fact, I am a little mad that the news tried fabricating the idea they were with you, when you first filmed the bottom of Lake Tahoe. I never liked that news video, right down to the title, “cREatUre sPoTted iN LAKe tAhoE!” I thought it was very misleading, and just click-baity.

    I don't think those are actually sharp or teeth at all. This being an octopus or squid of some type, I believe it is just a technique developed to disguise or cause fear.

    This is unacceptable, you have something amazing at your finger tips and you first off present it on its side making the viewer crane their neck, 30 seconds would do that. Your camera is looking at a light with duct tape on it? Come on, DO BETTER. If you do interest and money will come. But no one is gonna spend more then 3 minutes watching something like this.
