Magnapinna BigFin Squid Attacking | Deep Ocean ROV Footage

  • This video was taken by my coworker via a work class ROV in the deep ocean. The video shows a Magnapinna (big fin, nightmare squid) using its arms in a way that has not been seen before. As i write this i believe there are 9 videos of the squid released to the public. Scientists can only speculate how they hunt their prey. Currently it is believed that the squid drags it's arms along the bottom of the ocean. I think this video displays that the squid can use some type of elasticity to shoot its arms out to catch prey.
    Regardless, I am happy to share with you a rare glimpse of the Magnapinna squid.

      Others made the point that the fast movements are probably due to the currents caused by the vehicle filming this, instead of the animal actively moving the appendages. The animal is getting sucked in.

      Like the above comment says, likely turbulence from the ROV. Also, at 2:37 on the bottom left side of the screen you can see what looks like as least 1 of its tentacles getting sucked into the ROV's propeller, so it was probably freaking out as a defensive reaction as well.

    • @pbjandahighfive

      @@TP-op9bb I think this is kind of unlikely. Looking at the depth/alt info at the top you can see the ROV is barely moving. While it is possible that the reason the squid started to move so wildly is because one of the tentacles got caught in something, I doubt the ROV itself is even capable of causing anywhere near enough turbulence to propel the creature that violently on its own. Also unlikely that it was due to natural ocean currents because the ROV itself would have also been caught up in them, but it barely moved. You also need to remember that Magnapinna squids are HUGE, those tentacles are likely 30+ feet long, so in order for the ROV to get most of the squid within the view of the camera, it had to be a good distance away from it to begin with to be able to fit it within the frame. I do think it's possible that the reason the squid reacted may have been due to some sort of collision with one of the tentacles, but its speedy movements and the majority of the actions with its tentacles were probably done mostly under its own power.

    • @TP-op9bb
      @TP-op9bb Рік тому

      @@pbjandahighfive The depth/alt readings only measure the subs vertical movement, not horizontal though, so you can't really use that to determine how much the ROV is moving.
      As far as ocean currents go, I never mentioned them being a factor, though you can see the marine snow changing course when it started thrashing around, though whether that is from ocean currents, the ROV, or from its own movements it's hard to say. It is still important to note though that currents would affect something as delicate as magnapinna a lot more than a sturdy, compact ROV.
      Regarding getting all 30+ feet of it in frame, it is only fully in frame in the beginning. As the ROV gets closer the view is cut off until the angle changes and we're seeing it from below, so it wouldn't have needed to be very far at that point to see all of it.
      And idk, maybe since the magnapinna uses filament coiling to control its tentacles, the recoil alone from it suddenly retracting them could cause it to flail like that? I really couldn't say, but at the very least I don't believe what it was doing was an intentional "attack"/hunting behavior, which was the point of my original comment.

    I don’t think this is good evidence for aggressive behavior. As others have mentioned, the squid’s behavior is likely being changed by the presence of the ROV and perhaps it approaching too close. And as others have mentioned, the movement seems random and the tentacles going in and out of the light source make them look like they’re flashing around faster than they are. I can’t even identify any prey the squid was after, so again, this could be a response to current or a scary glowing box (the ROV). And now this video is being cited by the Magnapinna Wikipedia article to suggest aggressive behavior. We should be caution about how we interpret this video; it’s a snapshot in time.

      I agree with you mostly. What I find interesting is the locomotion showing it has the ability to move its arms like that, I think it's evidence that they are more of a hunter than previously thought. Usually, when I encounter these, they are pretty lethargic, although I find the adults to be far more animated than the young. I will be posting some more examples in the near future.
      I have a hypothesis concerning their hunting ability.
      I was talking to my friend who filmed this today, and I'll get his story recorded on a podcast or video soon. I believe it attacked because it was scared in this case. But for now, I have yo get back to work and hopefully see some more of these before we head for port.

    i dont know much about squid, but i do know rapid motion like that doesnt naturally come from limbs that slender; im fairly certain the poor thing got caught in the rov's propwash, we can even see one of its tentacles get pulled into the motor on the lefthand side of the screen starting at around 2:50 and reduced to a pinkish ring of material in the water that rises from the bottom of the screen at about 2:53
    we're talking about an animal that spends all its time in an environment with water so still particulate matter floats from the surface unperturbed, then the rov comes thru, powered by turbulence, and messes up the squid's day, possibly even condemning it do death, cause if there's blood in the water, something hungry is gonna come to see what got injured.
    interesting video, but i worry for the squid, cause that animal was in immense pain as it swam away.
    TL;DR, that wasn't an attack, the poor thing got mulched by the rov's props

    • @TahoeDeep
      @TahoeDeep  Рік тому +2

      I know where you are coming from and ive considered that. It was just so far away from the rov that I think it could explain the end of the reach of motion but would not initiate the movement. I will be working at great depths in the near future and hope we can replicate it near bottom and not in water collum.
      I've filmed this a few times now. New videos will be out really soon of a adolescent. The smallest I've seen is about 1 foot in length and the video should be up later this week. I think it could be explained with the type of elasticity a bullet shrimp builds in its appendages. Regardless, I've never seen one trolling the bottom and never one with prey in its tenticals.
      I appreciate your response.

    • @THarSul
      @THarSul Рік тому +12

      @@TahoeDeep if by bullet shrimp you mean the mantis shrimp/pistol shrimp, their speed comes from tension they build up in a special horse-saddle shaped piece of their exoskeleton that acts like a spring, where they build up power for a brief period, then release it all at once to crack hard materials with the double impact of the claw followed by the collapsing vacuum cavitation and wall of water pressure.
      in the shrimp's case, the force is possible because of the physical properties of the chitin that makes up their exoskeletons, so i doubt the squid is using a similar mechanic to reach high speeds, due to the lack of anything hard other than its beak.
      the speed that the squid's tentacles are capable of is actually demonstrated quite effectively at just after 0:50, when it rapidly retracts one of the tentacles on the left side of camera feed.
      based upon this behavior, and considering the region of the water column it was present in, it seems reasonable to infer that its feeding strategy is to wait in the nearly stationary water with its tentacles spread out like a series of fishing lines, waiting for something edible to make contact with one, at which point it quickly reels in the line to eat the morsel its collected before whatever its caught has a chance to break free and swim away.
      you can see the squid begin to try to escape with earnest at about 0:54 , but due to the incredible length of the squid's tentacles, and the fact that the rov has to pull water thru it's props in order to move, for it to approach the squid, the water the squid was suspended in was being pulled towards the rov, so as the squid tried to swim away, it was pulled closer to the rov at the same time, until around 2:30 where we see the rov's shadow from its headlights overtake the squid's tentacles, at which point the downward/rearward prop wash seems to have blown the tentacles around, causing the squid to recoil them as best it could to try to swim away, but there was clearly too much turbulence for it to fight and it wasn't able to get away until the tentacle that was caught in the intake flow got liquefied.
      at the end of the day, i think the rov just got too close to the squid, cause he was basically chasing the poor thing.
      there's prolly a minimum range to keep delicate stuff like that squid from getting sucked into the props, and if a critter is swimming away like this squid was trying to, so long as you don't need to be moving in the same direction, it might be best to let it go on its merry way instead of giving chase.

    • @TahoeDeep
      @TahoeDeep  Рік тому +3

      @THar Sul yes pistol shrimp, sorry replying in a hurry before we loose service, headed out to work with that rov today. I know it's not the same exact situation as the shrimp just a well knows example of storing energy and releasing it in sealife. I'm not a biologist, just engineer/rov pilot. When the arm was at its closest at the left side it was likely effected by the rov thruster. Though most of the time it was too far away. The rov can throw a thruster wash about 8 to 10 feet forward. -usually accomplished by thrusting forwards getting some speed and thrusting hard backwards. I do it often on purpose to dust off infrastructure the lazy way.
      I don't regret the rovs effort to follow the squid... I sure would and for much longer, a bigfin is hard to come by (although I am pretty certain I will see one this week where we Re operating... extremely deep even for rovs) thank for the comment wish I had more time to chat

    Assuming the ROV wasn’t influencing the squid’s movements in any way and they were as ‘deliberate’ as a squid’s movements can be, I’m not really sure that flailing long thin tendrils around and maybe throwing a jab to touch you with one of them is an act of predation… almost strikes me as the opposite. As if the tiny squishy squid is offering a single disposable tentacle to not be eaten by the giant glowing monster

    • @TahoeDeep
      @TahoeDeep  Рік тому +3

      That's a good theory, I seen one with a missing tentacle a few weeks back, also have a new video of a 3 foot adolescent with a missing tentacle.
      In the area i have found a high density of the Magnapinna i also find a mind blowing amount of "rare" deep sea cucumbers... they swim around and have transparent stomachs with almost glowing pink organs... just realized when researching for this comment they are rare... Ive seen about 2,000 if them. I have noticed these two creatures are always close to each other and i am starting to think the squid eats them. The purple sea cucumber is slow but when disturbed it can swim at a moderate pace, i can only imagine this is why the bigfin will rapidly move its tentacles to ensnare the prey. I would like to catch a sea cucumber and throw it at the bigfin but i would be fired so till i catch one in the act of hunting/eating i can only hypothesize.
      Good thinking though on the sacrificial limb theory, you could very well be correct sir.

    • @TahoeDeep
      @TahoeDeep  4 місяці тому

      The pilot is a coworker of mine, I also pilot this sub. I've been able to go back and see the other video files and sonar data.
      This little guy has a mantel of about 2.5 feet. The length of the tenticals range from 9 feet to 25 feet.
      From my experience based on the size and behavior this squid is young. I cannot guess the age because I just don't have enough examples to estimate.
      I've seen newborn magnapina that are only 1.5 feet total. I've also seen tenticals that extend over 35 feet (and that's being conservative)
      The larger magnapina I have encountered are much more animated. The tenticals can retract and extend in seconds. My best hypothesis is they hunt Enypniastes eximia.
      The largest I have encountered would dwarf this squid. It's rare to see the body/mantel of specimens that size. When we encountered them both times all you see is tenticals extending down from over 40ft up and when you back up and try to gain altitude the squid shoots away, they are timid and very fast when fully grown.

    After going to @TahoDeep to watch the full clip it looks like it might have gotten scared away by the ROV as before it starts moving fast it was swimming peacefully and if you look at the sides of the screen there seems to be a translucent thin appendage right before it starts spinning which leads me to believe that it might have been moving that fast and in that odd way to bring back as much of its arms as possible since there is a likelihood that whatever, if anything eats this thing it probably also likes to munch on a few tentacles
