This channel is dedicated to Voyagers! (NBC, 1982-83) time travel television series, and my novels.
Videos of making custom screen-accurate time machine (Omni) props, refurbishing other Omni props for screen-accuracy, interviews and video trailers for my novels Intervals of Hope (Blue Denim Press, 2021), Poor Man's Galapagos (Blue Denim Press, 2015), and Abundance of the Infinite (Quattro Books, 2012). There is an interview with Gordon Schottlander, a WWII British Commando who lived in London, England between the wars and who, along with my great grandfather (whose 85 WWI war letters were recently discovered in a family attic), was an inspiration for my novel Intervals of Hope. Silver 316L Polished Stainless Steel Omni - Video 1
This is a short video of a new silver 316L polished stainless steel Omni. Unfortunately Shapeways is no longer in business, so this was made using CraftCloud. I engraved the lid using an electric hand engraver, as the material seemed difficult to "engrave" using a center punch and small hammer. I am awaiting the custom laser-engraved dials, and finishing up the electronics. More to come soon!

@erinshann3055 Thank you so much for your comment! This was my favorite show as a kid (and still is all these years later!) so it was a real honor to be able to interview Meeno and gift him with an Omni, a dream come true!
Loved this show
Yes even to this day over 40 years later no one has made a fun adventure time travel series like Voyagers!
❤Brilliant
I agree it was the best and most original time travel series.
Great! How did you manage to isolate the red/green light sounds? I'm working on altering the Omni I have to sound more accurate, but I haven't been able to find any sound samples that don't also have music/dialogue in them.
Wow that's great you're altering your Omni to make the sounds more accurate! Hopefully the video helps. For the red light, I got that from the episode with Billy the Kid where Bogg says something like "Oh well, maybe we can get out of here now," after Billy the Kid and Teddy Roosevelt first meet. I then added space to make the sound exactly long enough to match the 2 Hertz (2 cycles per second) red light I had. For the green light, I used the episode with Harry Houdini when Bogg and Jeff land on the table, and Jeff opens the Omni and it's green. Those were the cleanest sounds I could find. For the escape sound I mixed that from a few episodes (escape sound then cosmos then falling sound, the pilot has a good falling sound at the beginning). I did all the sound mixing with audacity which allows you to cut, make the sounds better etc. Let me know if I can do anything else to help, and thanks for your comment!
@@canscify Fantastic! Thank you so much for listing the locations where you got the sounds, that will save me a ton of time. I haven't used Audacity in a while, but this is a great opportunity to get more familiar with it. I'm excited to get to work! Thanks again for your help.
@@markwest8850 No problem, glad to help! All the best on your endeavour, it may take some time but it sure adds to the finished prop!
Am I able to purchase the set or at least one of them from you at all?
Hi Maurice, I make them occasionally as a hobby as it's time consuming and expensive. Right now Shapeways, the 3d printing service which I normally used, is bankrupt. I would suggest getting one of the Omnis (or both) on Etsy, there are a couple of different versions there. One of them has laser engraved brass dials. I have had him make custom ones for my Omnis and the engraving and the dials on that one are beautiful.
@@canscify will do! Thanks for the info. 👍🏾😀
@@ActorMaurice No problem, thank you for commenting and subscribing!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL buddy!!! Awesome job as always!! Throw in our favorite theme song next time!!lol:)
Great, thanks! I'll have to put in the theme song for the next video for sure, it's already programmed on the sound board so I'll have no excuse!
@@canscify awesome! I’m going to have to buy one of those from you! Love your expertise and skills! Will you still be selling them on ETSY?
@@Ben-eu4il Great, thanks! I don't sell these on Etsy but there are 2 others that have the resin Omnis on Etsy, one has laser engraved brass dials as an option.
You should put out there where fans can fet a omni ... Id like to get a real prop in brass .. only put a smart phone watch in globe area ... The holographic one is awesome ... Id really like to have a omni cell phone.. ringtone would be voyagers opening intro ... Notification sound be the red green light ding ... What ha6yo keyways ???? I really want my own Omni ..
For sure, that's good to get that information out there. There are a couple of versions on Etsy of the Omni, one with brass laser engraved dials. There's still no brass one out there for sale yet, I understand replicaprops is working on a version. I had the holographic one you're talking about (scifipropguy Omni) a while ago, it was big and heavy and beautifully made (built like a tank!). Nice idea with the smart phone. You should try a prototype using one of the Omnis on Etsy, just an idea, and let me know how it turns out!
As a kid I absolutely loved this show. Watched it every week. Was so bummed when they canceled it. Lee I made History fun. Now as a grown adult and a teacher I can’t for the life of me understand why they would stop making such a great show.
Yes for sure, I can't understand either when you see what shows were out at the time that lasted multiple seasons. Shows that couldn't ever match Voyagers! Even up to today nothing compares... Something interesting you mentioned is that it makes history fun. That is something that so many other mediocre time travel shows do not.
So cool you did this! This is my all-time favorite show and I even remember times through high school in my history class. I knew the answers to the questions. The teacher would ask because I had watched this show!
That's so great! Yes, it was certainly a unique honour to give Meeno this gift for him to enjoy. I hope he enjoys it for years to come. I always loved the show (it's always been my favourite too) and it was amazing to be able to give something back to Meeno who has brought so many years of entertainment to so many people!
I never knew that meeno was born in my country the Netherlands :-)
amazing
I did buy the dvd collection. Missed watching some episodes when it was on tv to my great grandmother, she wanted to watch 60 minutes. Was 10 and 11 years old when first aired.
So funny, lots of kids in that situation apparently. When I watched it originally it didn't come in too well and I had to adjust the rabbit ears on the tv and turn the channel dial by hand!
I'd love to see Meeno on a new Voyagers movie or TV series. It was such a great series!
For sure, that would be great! I'm all for a Voyagers! reboot!
Oh man, i loved that show and always wanted one
Theres the episode where some guy in the past has it all taken apart on a workbench so maybe you can make a working version
Nice, that's the episode Worlds Apart where Thomas Edison takes it apart! I have a video where I took an Omni to Edison's lab in the Menlo Park complex near here at Greenfield Village in Michigan.ua-cam.com/video/nHfQVZ0TYG8/v-deo.html . Check it out!

Great, thank you so much for your comments! It was definitely amazing to be able to give that Omni to Meeno, and that he liked it so much! A real honor to interview him! So the one in this video is a replacement for that, with this as a "brass" (Shapeways Bronze) Omni. I think it turned out well for screen accuracy!
When can I get one......I do have the 3d printed one but ... Great workmanship and research
Thanks so much! It took a while to make but I think it turned out well!
You're probably aware that replicaprops will be making a brass version, and has some parts available already.

Great, thanks so much! It was an honor to interview Meeno, and Jon-Erik Hexum is definitely missed by so many fans.
Hey babies , it’s Meeno, jumping jack flash 🕺
loved that show... much more innocent times then
For sure. It's so unfortunate the show was cancelled when you look at the quality of some of the other tv shows that were on at that time. It should have gone on for multiple seasons.
How many Omnis were made for the show and where are they now?
Great question! There's some excellent info on the Omni on this website voyagersguidebook.wixsite.com/voyagersguidebook/the-omni. I extracted the information below from there. "Some sources say 3 Omnis were made and James Parriott still has the originals in his possession. There are about 2-3 Hero Omnis somewhere in time. On the Voyagers Guidebook Facebook Group, James Parriott provided fans with a few never before known Omni facts: “I have the two Hero Omnis. One was for close-ups and had more powerful lights and a post out the back so you could move the globe around. The other is more self-contained and, yes, had switches for red and green on the side. Unfortunately, the lights really didn't read well on film.” “And we also had a bunch of wooden ones with brass faces, that we could lose during stunts, etc. I'd say those were in 95% of the scenes.“ Parriott also added that: “Unfortunately, the magnifier broke off long ago, and I can't find it.“ All of the Omni sounds were added later after filming the episodes, the prop only had a solid green-light and a blinking red light, no sound. Jim Parriott also told the Voyagers Guidebook Fan Group that the Omni lights were controlled by a prop man. The Omni was hard-wired to a large 9-volt battery. In close-up shots, a hand model was also used, rather than the actors. ADDITIONAL OMNI FACTS FROM MAGAZINE SOURCES: * According to a fan who spoke to Meeno Peluce, the original Omni cost about $3,500. * The Omni was 100% custom-designed, no found parts were used. * The Omni lids were custom made, then the details of the "V" in the center were carefully hammered onto it, as well as the Lettering for "Time Waits For No Man." One of the stunt Omnis was gifted to a fan as shown here (on the website listed above)..."
@canscify Oh that's very, very interesting! Thank you for sharing that link. I'm glad the hero Omnis still exist. Maybe they'll be in a museum someday.

Id like one one in copper ... Take a smart phone watch and put in center and make not just a prop but something usable
What about making it usable???? Smart phone watches are small could you actually put smart phone watch in center where globe was ... Make the sucker usable not just a prop for conversation
Let me know the dimensions and/or the model? I thought about that in the past but they all look too big. It would be interesting to put something with lights and sounds like the red/ green light and a globe if that could be done with a smartphone custom app maybe? That way you wouldn't need any space for electronics/ battery.

Bats breath....my favorite question i'd love to ask Meeno: if there were a lot of Voyagers outtakes or bloopers (as none exist on video anywhere).
Yes, that would be great to see! Maybe they were lost on the cutting room floor.
Chris, thank you much for putting this interview together and sharing it! I've long admired your creativity and the talent you're continually honing and how you've managed to combine that with your passion for Voyagers! I'm so glad you got to share that with Meeno and impart a blessing to him both from you personally as well as from the broad and enduring community of fans. In maybe 2009 or 2010, I unexpectedly ran into Soleil Moon Frye. As I am perhaps not the most socially graceful and aware person, and especially wasn't then, I shouldn't try to talk to anyone from any show I've ever watched, but I rudely interrupted a quiet moment she was having to herself to awkwardly tell her that my mom's nickname for me for a while was Punky, because left to my own devices to dress for school, I'd often end up wearing mismatched socks. Soleil graciously smiled and asked if I enjoyed the show, to which I replied that it was great and that I felt like George Gaynes was my TV dad. And then my mind got whirring and I blurted out, "Oh! And I really loved your brother's show, Voyagers! How is he?" She politely excused herself then with an "If you don't mind..." Of course I realized then how rude I was being, not only intruding on her time in the first place but while doing so focusing on other people besides her. I tried to stammer out an apology but no sound came out, and I walked away to give her back her peace. The way my mind works, I overanalyze social situations later to try to learn from them, and unfortunately got the idea in my head I should still try to apologize to her somehow. So I went on Twitter and @'ed her an apology. She didn't reply directly, but a few minutes later tweeted something to the effect of, People should respect others and mind their own business. I don't know for sure if it was in regards to me, but perhaps I inadvertently bothered her enough to provoke that response. Why am I sharing this? I think it's to say to Meeno: Hey, I was such a big dorky fan of Voyagers! that I accidentally dissed your sister! Whoops! Not one of my finer maneuvers in life, but remembering it again now for the first time in years I can laugh at my exuberance and appreciate the pure place it came from even if I expressed it the wrong way and to the wrong person. I really appreciated Meeno's message to fans here, that whatever infectious thing pulled you in to Voyagers! as a kid, that was real and came from the genuineness of his own excitement and working with Jon-Erik Hexum and the other great folks on the show. I think that's why even though Voyagers! aired for only a single season, you still find so many people for whom it's a special show unlike any other, and that it continues to find new fans as it's shared with younger generations. Meeno, thank you so much for sharing your memories and thoughts and warm positive spirit with us.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with Soleil Moon Frye! I've never seen her show but I'm sure there are a lot of fans that loved her show like you. It's hard to know what to say to celebrities. They've probably heard so many different reactions from fans that they've "heard it all before." And yes, I thought that was great that Meeno said whatever infectious thing you took from Voyagers! was real and came across from the excitement Meeno and Jon-Erik Hexum had working on the show. It made the show great.
Just amazing. Love the look and coloring. Is it all plastic, brass or a bit of both?
Thanks Michael! It's all Shapeways bronze except the back. The Shapeways bronze I think is much closer to the original color than the Shapeways brass. The Shapeways brass is very yellow and doesn't age to the same color as the original. For the back, I priced it out as a 3D print and it was around $400 polished for a flat plate. So I got this brass plate 1.6mm 0.064" special ordered from the hobby store and rough cut it with a bansaw. Then I drilled the holes on a drill press, using a cheap glass bead plastic template I 3d printed for hole locations. Now I'm using a dremel tool and diamond and hobby files (and finally sandpaper). It's a lot of work but the brass plate was around 30$ for 2 good sized plates. And seems to be very similar to what they used on the original Omnis.
Will u be offering a kit ???? I like the first one better ..... How bout copper? I like the digital photo frame in center what about placing guts of smart phone watch and put in center ???? That way screen is usable .... I really want one of these but like bigger one with digital photo frame in it .... I don't care about cost I'll trade a Yamaha vino scooter clean title for it !!!!!
@@andyjacobson8825 I think replicaprops will be offering a kit. Copper would be interesting. A smartphone watch is an interesting concept if it would work, you could use google earth or something for the globe. The problem with the digital photo frames, although a nice concept, is they really don't work well or reliably. Once connected and working it's good but trying to get them connected and soldering onto small soldering pads, getting the software to work, etc. has proved very challenging with those photo frames. Another concept is the arduino/ adafruit screens they have. Those would probably work reliably but I haven't delved into that much.
Absolute works of fine art!!! Love your work! I saw where you were recording the sounds onto the board, did you also build the circuit board? First to watch your video, give it a thumbs up, and comment!!! Blessings to you!
Thank you so much! The circuit board is Adafruit 16MB and is here: www.adafruit.com/product/2217. Very easy to program and use, it just plugs in and you name the files according to the instructions on the website depending on whether you want a one-time activation of the sound, a repeating sound, or a random sound.
@@canscify Wow, very cool! Thank you for the direction and information!
@@Ben-eu4il For sure, no problem! It's a very easy circuit, just a couple of LED lights and the sound board, a speaker, battery and charging port, a switch for red to green, and an activation switch which is just a screw filed off on one side that makes a connection when turned!
@@canscify Thanks for clarifying! Very cool!!
Canscify... Your skill is amazing. Any chance I can convince you to finally build me one?
Thank you for commenting, and thanks for watching! I don't build these for sale, just as a hobby, as it is an expensive and time-consuming build. Especially since I live in Canada and have to deal with large duties and taxes for everything coming across the border. You might want to look up replicaprops, I think he's working on a version for sale. Etsy also has a couple of resin ones for sale, one with brass dials. I recommend people build their own as well. I've even built a couple of Omnis using sheet metal, which can be used for the body, or it can be modeled on Tinkercad. The dome would have to be made on Tinkercad but it's not too difficult to 3d model that.

Thank so much, and thanks for watching! It'll be interesting to see how the new design comes together too. I thought the Drake Omni turned out well as a painted piece. It would be very expensive to try to make one out of silver so I tried lots of different methods to make one at a reasonable cost. If you look at the original Drake Omni used in the show you will see that it was painted as well. There were 2 versions in the show, one that was shiny like a chrome finish, and another that was a matte finish. I was able to reproduce the chrome finish using Molotow Liquid Chrome which is probably similar to what the propmakers used. The problem is you can't handle it so it would only be good as a model, but I also covered it with epoxy to protect it which worked ok but diminished the finish. The one in the video is the best matte finish I could find which was a bit shiny (Duplicolor Chrome). It was certainly great interviewing Meeno and hearing his reminiscences of Voyagers! and being able to get him an Omni. It was great growing up and watching Jeffrey Jones, being the same age (and same as you too). Amazing that he admired and respected Jon-Erik Hexum so much and that they got along so well, and that is the chemistry that was off-screen and on-screen that helped make the show so great.
That Omni looks awesome. Looks like it will become the new Flat Stanley! Meeno seems like a truly awesome guy. I love hearing about child stars that grow up to actual happy endings. I just wish it were the rule and not the exception. Voyagers was such a fun show to watch. My favorite "red light" moment was in the one about the space race, where Phineas and Jeff show up at a "FILLING STATION and (in much smaller letters) aerospace museum."
Nice, glad you liked the Omni! He sure seemed like a great guy and the fact that he was a child star that went right was amazing. Interesting that he said acting was something he wanted to do, as opposed to his mother pushing him into it, etc. which may have caused problems. I like your favorite "red light" moment. The one that comes to mind for me is one of the unaired scripts where Bogg and Jeff fell and caught on to the edge of a building, and Jeff asked where they were and Bogg said "you want me to check the Omni now?" which would have been great to see but was still great to read!
It's funny how he keeps confusing the historical characters and details. Weird how we fans have a more detailed recalling of the show than him.
Right, I wonder how many times he's seen the shows. Probably a lot less than we have as fans! He mentioned he watched them with his kids, and they liked the shows, which I thought was so interesting!
@@canscify Yeah! I found that adorable, too. Must be something very special for kids to watch their father as a kid doing all this crazy stuff. I've tried to get my own kids to watch it, but they're not really interested in such an old show anymore.
@@DoloresLehmann For sure, it must be great for his kids! And for Meeno it seemed like it was just a job and he didn't realize at the time that he was doing such an amazing time travel show. There is Time Tunnel which is another great time travel show too (Timeless was good but very dark) and not as good in my opinion. Because they had a "Voyagers Headquarters/ Control Room" in Time Tunnel that they always utilized, which was a downfall of the show in my opinion. And they didn't have any cool time travel device like an Omni. And of course they didn't have Bogg and Jeff!
@@canscify I've watched some episodes of Time Tunnel, too, but it failed to draw me in the way Voyagers did. I only learned about Timeless from your video, so I checked it out immediately. Haven't watched it yet, but of course, the Salem episode caught my attention, and how surprised I was to meet Abiah again. If this wasn't a direct copy/reference, I don't know what could be. To me, this was kind of THE episode. I was rather surprised that you and Meeno didn't mention it in the interview. But all in all, no other time travel show accomplished what Voyagers did. It was just the amazing chemistry between the two.
@@DoloresLehmann Agreed about the chemistry between Jeff and Bogg, it really helped make the show great. I know what you're saying about Time Tunnel. To me, though, that's the closest show to Voyagers! that I've seen. But there are differences like an episode set in the future which wasn't very good. And they always travelled at random like with the Omni on automatic mode, but they had no control over their time destinations. I like how on Voyagers! they would always find something wrong then be able to go back and fix it. That's not in any other show I've seen. Time Tunnel is definitely not as good in my opinion but they go to a lot of times like ancient Troy etc. that would have made really good Voyagers! episodes. Interesting about the Salem episode in Timeless and the parallels to Voyagers!, I didn't think of that at the time. I know the producer of Timeless cited Voyagers! as inspiration to create Timeless which was great to hear.
1:06 It was Jimmy Carter.
Ya right, thanks! I realized that after and it's in the beginning of the video along with Jimmy Carter's name, where it shows all the historical figures from Voyagers!
