Review sites ratings are one thing, official classification is another one. But in Thailand, they don't have a 5-star luxury or 6-star classification that would fit with hotels such as the Mandarin Oriental, the Capella, Peninsula or St Regis...

There are 3 other BED hotels in Chiang Mai. Have you tried them?

One is in the trendy district of Nimman, BED Nimman. Another is directly in the old city, BED Phrasingh and the third one is near the road to Doi Suthep, BED Changkian. All 3 have great grades on hotel review sites.

Thanks! There should indeed be a difference between 5-star and 5-star luxury. But the frontier in between all those 5-star hotels is complicated to draw. Even in these 5 hotels, the Chatrium is clearly above the JC Kevin in both quality of service, breakfast and amenities. I would compare it to hotels like the M Gallery Muse or the So'.

Then there are the super lux hotels like the 4 Seasons, Capella, St Regis, MO etc. The prices reflect that.

Among the real five-star hotels in Bangkok we could highlight the following ones: 1. Mandarin Oriental 2. The Peninsula Bangkok 3. The Park Hyatt 4. Four Seasons 5. Capella 6. Siam Kempinski 7. Sindhorn Kempinski 8. Kimpton Maa Lai 9. Okura Prestige 10. The Sukhothai Bangkok

A legitimate 5-star yet relatively affordable hotel in Bangkok is the JW Marriot, Nana, next to Ploenchit.

Interesting! Currently, only the Asai hotel is sold as a 3-star, though it offers more than the D'tel, for example. The Continent prices are also higher than the Mövenpick...

If there's nothing else, I'll do with it. But, IMHO, a 4-star or a 5-star hotel should offer more choice and better quality when it comes to tea. The same goes for coffee, by the way.

No, I live in Paris, France. But I'm coming to Bangkok quite often. Cost of living for someone having a US pension is usually really great in Bangkok. You can rent a superb condo for less than USD 1,000 and food per day would cost less than USD 20
