This was super interesting! I went nuts making my first book, I think I'll be flirting with $20k spent soon. A huge chunk was the rounds of editing, and the Canadian dollar doing poorly. I'm accepting that I won't be quitting my dayjob anytime soon, but will keep writing for the love of it :)

1099 doesn't have to be filed unless you hit a certain income threshold. There's one at $600 and another at $5000.

Even successful traditional authors don't generally sell more than 5000 copies. Without professional marketing and distribution, going self-published means you are just fine selling to friends and family and a scattering few more. I.e. the reality is that very few authors, whether traditionally or self published, make much money. Even Annie Dillard kept a day job after winning the Pulitzer and becoming a household name. The great majority of _successful_ authors don't earn enough to quit their day job. Folks. Don't get distressed. Except for a small subset of you, your book is not going to make you zillions and you are not going to be able to quit your day job. That is not a personal failure. That's the nature of book publishing: the reading public gravitates to a small percentage of authors who reap the most rewards.

I loved the first book on Audible. I immediately started the second book and it’s great too. It’s such a good trope. I will watch the TV show after I finish the second book.

Congratulations on those in-person sales!! That is impressive! I, for one, am the type of person that would buy two or three books of a series without having read the first one, especially if I hadn't seen the books before and didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to get the rest of the series.

I my gosh I'm having such a headache with my color profile on my covers, i originally got the warning about the colors like you did but i went back instead to "correct" it(ruined it) and proceeded like normal, but when i downloaded the e proof the colors were awful, so i undid the color correction by embedding the RGB colors, but didn't get a warning that time, I'm wait for them to email me with the newest e proof to see if it worked, I honestly should have trusted my gut and submitted it the first time. I'm so ready to be done with this. 😅

spice should be spicy, many adults try to read YA to not have spicy. Not all teens want their romances to be spicy, nor fad to black. Relationships arent one note, especially when you're young and new. Adults who want spice in YA seems like they just want simpler, quicker or fantasy type romances with spice. They don't want to deal with adulting themes like going darker, serious or mundane like paying bills XD

I read the books after the show and every change they made I could tell why they made for the most part (time and/or budget… heck I read the first two books best choice to be honest specifically with the mindset of if I was adapting this what I would do which is pretty much the same yes even combine book one and two but with small differences with the Annie plot in the show it definitely could have been done better tbh) The casting is so good especially with newcomer Cameron Chapman as Lockwood (he looks so much like the illustration on the The Hollow Boy book cover) and I still want to see his copies of the books (in a interview he mentioned that his copies were very annotated and I like snooping on annotated books) Also the soundtrack is slapping if nothing else just listen to the soundtrack its great and I wish we lived in the world where Netflix is not allergic to anything more than 8 episodes and not keep moving the goalposts for renewal and marketing should have been better. (Also favourite thing Jonathon stroud is in the show as an extra) One of the few times when the adaptation is on par with book (there will never be equal footing between a book and a adaptation into a different medium because it’s two different things) Favourite books of the series is creeping shadow and the empty grave Scenes: George and the boneglass (so funny) Kipps speech, Lockwood’s impossible leap, the Fetch ghost, Kipps trying the goggles, the clacking of the teeth, trying to get the skull back (all of Lucy and the Skull), George thinking Lockwood and Lucy are dead, the reveal from the skull, creepy tomb raiding in TEG, Les Belle Dames (hilarious to point out that Ruby Stokes who greatly plays Lucy in the show knows circus training like trapeze work), donuts, the death-glow of Lockwood’s sister and what became of it and the final gift from Lockwood that we see

Keep going, I’m definitely praying for you and I hope everything pick up but everyone journey is different and people catch on to other people late but just use it as motivation and get better every book I’m always rooting for the underdog.

The Ingram warnings about the color settings have to do with how you set up the color profiles in Indesign. Under the "Edit" tab in your Indesign doc, go down to "Transparency Blend Space" and set it to CMYK. When you export it to PDF from InDesign, in the export menu after you select where you're saving it, go down to "Output" and set Color Conversion to "Convert to Destination; Preserve Numbers" ...this dictates the color based on the CMYK color codes instead of visual appearance. and Destination should be set to: "Document CMYK: U.S. Web Coated (Swop) V2." It sounds complicated, but it just ensures you are getting the color you anticipate and it isn't messed up by a variation of your screen. Your colors look great so you might have it accidentally set correctly. :)

Please, please, please do not put your money in Goodreads giveaways and Amazon Ads. I have been following indie publishing for over a decade and every forum and results i have found about those two are that you might as well shred your money. They absolutely do not work. Better you find ARC websites and do facebook ads.

Like this video, nice to meet you. That's actually pretty good for the first year. I agree that in person sales is higher for me as well. Because of my health i am not able to do that as much anymore, so I'm not making much currently. But the biggest challenge this year has been that I'm not publishing. Writing is challenging because of medical conditions, and I'm in a slump.
