This was from the infamous autumn 1973 Rice game wherein the MOB ridiculed the Aggie Band. It was also the Houston Corps Trip, with a downtown Houston parade earlier that day. Packing up everything for the trip to Houston, unloading everything for the parade, then marching in the parade, then loading everything back up, then unloading again at Rice Stadium, then performing at halftime, then loading everything back up for the return to College Station -- had to be an absolutely exhausting day for Band members, especially fish (who did all the heavy lifting). (If memory is correct, the Maroon Band C.O. Ray Bennett was a summer 1973 graduate of US Army Ranger School... the Real Thing... the Rough Tough Real Stuff.)

When the Trigon intellectuals a few years after this video was filmed determined that serge-like uniform shirts would be issued in standard fashion to every class, Mr. Zubik got put out of business. I heard an account that a couple of Corps Staff types took examples of the new shirts to him, and he accurately denounced them as far less impressive than the ones he had been producing for decades. (Zubik likely did not use that exact language.)

The term "Sergebutt" originated long ago due to the Junior privilege of wearing tailored gabardine (serge) uniforms in addition to the standard-issue khakis to which fish and Sophomores were limited. Those serge unis really were better looking, impressive to underclassmen, just another of the privileges one earned by persisting in the Corps. Similarly, the dark green serge "midnight" shirts, which Juniors and Seniors were allowed to wear as Class A, were extremely distinctive. Among many other factors, getting to wear those nicer uniforms as Juniors and Seniors was motivational for gutting it out as underclassmen. I think it was a mistake, later, allowing all the classes to wear serge-like uniforms, including the dark green shirts. P.S. The Band's best Head Drum Major during my four years was Class of '73.... initials (how appropriate!) AG.
