Dr. Bird sought out a Master of Divinity and a PhD in biblical studies because of her deep love for and connection to the Christian Bible. What she learned in that process was too important to keep to herself. Thus, all of her scholarly endeavors are intended to make the things she has learned and discovered about the Bible over the past 20 years accessible to as many people as possible. Whether you know half the Bible by heart or have never read any of it, you just might find something interesting and useful in her work.

You are so far from biblical truth i cant even begin to explain it! You seriously need to stop your ungodly teaching NOW. You are leading people away from truth, and you need to repent. Im not going to go in to where you are wrong because, to be honest, you are so off, i dont think you have the spirit to hear and understand at the moment. You should not be teaching. You are a false prophet. Anyone watching , switch off, and start following a proper biblical teacher such as Derek Prince.
The story of Onan isnt coitus interruptus, the phase "spilling his seed" has to do with a primitive form of post birth "abortion" of sorts. The bible doesnt refer to semen as "seed" but refers to children as "seed." God killing Onan in that context makes a LOT more since Onan was basically a child killer, like the Canaanites who made child sacrifices.
I don't know about women but Ma*Sturbation* doesn't help men. It is like scratching a fungi infection and enjoying it and once you are done there is bleeding and pains. It's a fleeting pleasure that doesn't last so it can't be from God.
I still can't wrap my head around how Dan has religious faith when he knows what he knows. Does he think the data he talks about is wrong somehow? For him to cite the science of belief and to accept it confusing He refuses to talk about his faith in public. There is something fishy about that. The guy is a Mormon. How does this even make sense?
@@soupbonep I cannot speak for Dan, but I can speak for plenty of people who choose to remain in faith communities for the connection to the other people, even when they do not agree with any or all of the beliefs upheld by most in that community.
Jesus said that if a man looks at a woman with lust he commits adultery with her in his heart. So, if a man has sex with a woman that would also be adultery because he is looking at her and also touching her in a lustful way during sex. So this basically makes sex outside of marriage a sin because adultery is forbidden by the bible. Am I wrong? Also, I have a crush on you Jennifer Bird!!
the pro-abortion bible and the anti-abortion republican party agree that women get no say in the matter

I love this first century Palestine context. But this looks like more of a genuine donation than the temple tax. Which was 60 times higher than what she has paid.
@@martimgr If you watch the full video you will see that the passage actually addresses this, as do I a bit. When Jesus refers to men in the Temple “devouring widow’s houses,” this is a reference to what happens when they could no longer pay the temple tax: they hand over the deed to their house. In the video I suggest that what is strongly implied for those in the know is that Jesus could have added, “and her house is next!”
@JenniferBirdPhD Hi, I watched the whole video. I just don't find support for your opinion in this text in particular. The temple tax was collected by the temple guards as suggested in the gospels. Not to be thrown in the brass plate. I love the contextualization of the gospels, but this one doesn't seem to have support in the text. Specially after what is said by Jesus.
@ None of what you have said is mentioned in the gospel. I am working with what I know from biblical scholarship. I do not have time to list all of the sources that have informed my knowledge for every video I create or for every livestream. Perhaps you will find it more compelling if you watch other livestreams where I discuss the economic realities behind Jesus’ comments. But mostly, it sounds to me like you truly haven’t put yourself into the scene of this passage, not from the perspective of the poor woman or from a Jesus who was in Jerusalem to decry the exploitation of the masses.
@@JenniferBirdPhD To use the argument of authority diminishes your authority. I read once that: It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain an idea without accepting it. In Mathew 17:27 it clearly states that there were temple tax collectors. It was not voluntary. And it was a based on a law that came from the Torah. The passage in Mark clearly states that it was an offering, a gift. I believe that when you want to suggest a new interpretation to the gospel, yes, you should bring more evidence to support your claim.

it is possible that having belief in something does not prevent you from having biases in another. it is possible that the value of a person is multifaceted, such that mentioning certain aspects of it disregards other aspects of it. It is possible that competence is the primary value in current society, such that equality of outcomes will perpetuate tyranny and injustice.
It possible that in a fallen world that people would pit against people. A prediction is better than nothing.
I am not convinced. It is possible that adam and eve were meant to live eternally by eating the tree of life. It is possible that risk taking is not a problem when their meets were ergonomically met by their creator. It is possible that the creator knows by understanding and manipulating probabilistic models not full foreknowledge. It is possible that Adam and Eve understood god's direction, and perceived that they could have acted otherwise, but choose to act against the directive. It is possible that sin as failing the mark would be failure to this standard, and the result of such perpetuation of failure of such standards lead to failure of more standards such that there are always exceptions to standards. Thus I am not convinced that the original sin does not exist. The disgust, unpalatability, as i understand, correct me if im wrong, are not further elaborated, thus i interpret it as a personal flavor which does not convince me.
One of my neighbors who lives on $1,100 a month, sent $400 to the Trump campaign. She is still being bombarded with requests for more money "to save America."
Christianity is a cult and the Bible was created by men to control women and men
Judaism is also a cult and so is Islam.
Happy New Year
The fallacy of the global identity! Or simple reductionism, perhaps. How do you explain the Christian church's (I mean all Christians as a collective, not an organization) sponsorship of hospitals, care for the aged, medical missions to badly run (aka 'poor') countries, fostering of learning, sponsorship of charities, and general care for others. Your asserted thanophilia seems to work out in the most life-affirming manner. What Christianity is is realistic about death and its great contradiction of life. That's why the crucifixion is only half the story: it is the prelude to the resurrection of Christ as the foreshadowing of the resurrection of all who want to be 'in him'. That is affiliated with his new life. Christ kills death! Your reading of Paul is clearly inadequate. N.T. Wright's work might help. But, for most, it seems life is thanophilic: everyone who lives dies. What could be more thanophilic than that? Think of those who indulge in foolish diets, who don't exercise, who drink alcohol, who drive on the road....all death-lovers by their behaviour. This just confirms to me that intellectuals have the silliest ideas.
Drop the book in the bin and find a healthy path.
Saying that “Women being trad wives is a biblical idea” is a lot like saying the Bible endorses slavery. It may be true. But it is also very harmful and damaging to people. Just because the talks about something, does not mean it is the best thing to do or follow.
Agreed! Did you watch the whole video? ;)
Thank you for this economic perspective! I’ve never heard it before but it makes a lot of sense that Jesus was criticizing the unfair taxation system in this story. This verse has been somewhat abused by churches throughout the centuries to milk the donation to them. A couple years ago, the Vatican posted a picture of the Pope in a trip to Africa. He was in his pope mobil receiving a local currency bill from a small seemingly poor boy. The caption says the Pope praises this boy for giving to the church (even though the boy is poor). I remember thinking, how very wrong it is for a fat old very rich and powerful man to RECEIVE money from a small poor boy who lives in an impoverished African country !! The boy needs the money more than the Vatican!! This is we need scholars like you to expose this kind of misusing of Bible verses.
@@ahadianto9632 I echo your response to that moment between the impoverished little boy and the Pope! It’s disgusting!
I'm glad I took the brief time it took to watch this. I never questioned the prevailing interpretation of this passage. But now ...

I like your gentle tone combined with candor, acknowledging multiple diverse (even contradictory) voices within the Bible. The Bible gives us choices, not doctrines... Our doctrines are the result of us picking and choosing what parts of the Bible to focus on.
@@KGchannel01 Nicely said! (And thank you.)
It's so unusual for a woman to take any kind of serious priority in a biblical narrative. Kind of makes me wonder how Devorah actually managed to become a judge. ❤️
Passing a few of the judges of Israel, whose acts were similar to Othniel's, we come to Deborah (a bee), a prophetess, and wife of Lepidoth (lamps = winter months), who judged Israel in the time of Sisera (the stars visible in winter), i.e., during winter. "And the children of Israel again (as they did every year) did evil in the sight of the Lord, when Ehud (the civil year) was dead" (Jud. 4.1), i.e., when winter came on. So, the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin (the seeing one = Sun of September), king of Canaan (the fourth son of Ham = Scorpio), who reigned in Hazor (enclosure-zodiac), and whose captain was Sisera (the winter constellations), which dwelt in Harosheth of the gentiles (the winter months). Deborah meanwhile "dwelt under the palm-tree," i.e., at the end of summer. Scorpio is Phalti/Palti in my earlier post. Scorpio aka Phallus rules during the five months of Rev. 9.5. He is not allowed to pass over from winter (5 signs/months) to summer (7 signs/months).
@@ChixieMary Right?! Actually, one of my friends has suggested/played with the idea that she might have passed as male. There is a similar situation with Nefirtiti in Egypt, though there are questions about how she presented. Did she take on maleness by choice after getting power or is that how she was taken seriously to begin with?
Do you think Devorah was used to (in a way) shame the people?
@JenniferBirdPhD I had a feeling it had to be either her utility to them as an extremely powerful woman who was basically a puppet... Or she was somebody's main squeeze and she got special privileges. And a beard. ❤️
@@TracyTodd2199 I think she was mainly used for the utility. They could hold her up as the token woman who is obviously proving that women have rights, or she was somebody's squeeze and he just used her as needed. Women didn't have autonomy. Why did Devorah seem to be an exception? 😁

It is funny that men are never primarily baby makers. It is true that it is not the same level of involvement (see pregnancy), but there is still some involvement if I remember correctly.
there is a pretty heavy leaning on men to become fathers but it's definitely more total for women
Symbolical humans, in the bible, are neither male nor female but male and female. They are the Zakar (piercer) and Nekebah (pierced) in one deity. Adam aka Earth and Eve aka Heaven, are one. Heaven (Eve) is all around, but Man (Earth) fails to see.
you don't need the bible to justify respecting women as people, but it certainly helps in justifying their dehumanization. so nobody's going to honestly say "i want to hate women but the bible says they're smart and capable so i can't"
Now imagine in all these genealogies one single woman wasn‘t that faithful as needed to her husband/ Master, all this BS falls into pieces…. 🤭 That’s the same with proud pure blood nationalists…. We don’t know if our mothers, grandmothers, greatgrandmothers….. were betraying our male ancestors, who maybe aren’t at all our ancestors. 🤷🏻♂️

There is a funny story of Saul giving his daughter Michal (who is like god) to David. Saul takes Michal away from David and gives her to phalti/palti (Phallus). Michal is taken away from phallus and is returned to David. The weeping phallus runs after Michal but is told to go back home. Paltiel or Phaltiel = god is the phallus. You might think of Michal as the Yoni and the Asherah. Asher is another word for the phallus.. The suffix ah added to Asher indicates the Asherah is the female - male event.
Thank god the bible is fiction.
I'm half way through Paula Fredriksen's "Ancient Christianities" and I think she does a really good job in pointing exactly out what you are so focused on highlighting, how church tradition, Paul and especially Luke Acts paints this misleading picture. I can highly recommend her book. And I'm looking forward to seeing her on your channel. But for now, I'm going to enjoy this video :)
the simple act of looking at women lustfully is a sin, and you are saying here SEX IS NOT, you need to chill. Matthew 5:28 - But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Exodus 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

@@algl4569 She was old enough to give birth, and was an enslaved person. Exactly how young she was is hard to say. But I was trying to be playful in order to point to what is happening. I hear your pushback and appreciate you speaking up.
@JenniferBirdPhD in the Greek text it calls her a παῖς which is a child most handmaidens were in their teens
In Greek it calls her a παῖς that is a child
@@algl4569 I am not at home to consult my LXX, though I trust you on that, but the Hebrew does not indicate that she was a child. The Hebrew is earlier, for whatever that may be worth. The story also narrates that Abram, Sarai, and Hagar had been in Canaan 10 years. I am not trying to get into a throw down with you; I just think it is better to tread lightly on such things.
@@JenniferBirdPhD there were over 70 rabbi's that translated it from Hebrew to Greek so in some way it does indicate that in Hebrew
Crazy!
I really think it depends, if you are watching porn or going to strip clubs or seeing anyone’s naked body besides a man or women you are committed to marrying and living with for the rest of your life then yeah it’s a sin but if you’re a young adult or teen and you’re using your mind I don’t think it’s necessarily a sin of course this doesn’t mean you should still do it all the time 24/7 every once and a while is ok though
What is lots woman looked back and as she was rushing she walked Inti a pillar of salt. I know - I know I’m sure the Hebrew doesn’t translate that way but I like to think that she didn’t become a pillar Maybe this was a way for her to get away from her toxic owner. And the pillar story was a clever way to cover it up. Also if they witnessed that she turned into a pillar of salt wouldn’t they have had to look back to witness this happening ..
@@MennoNoMoreAmbulanceGirl I like to read that scene as one of those toxic controlling clueless moments: of course she looked back! She knew everyone in town! Her friends, other children. Of course she looked back. It isn’t a sign of weakness but of compassion. Along those lines, more than one poet has taken up that story and made the pillar of salt the accumulation of tears she shed.
@ I just noticed my typo -what if… but I love listening to your interaction with the stories and it allows my imagination to run and come up with scenarios other than those that were preached over the pulpit.
