Autumn Fly-Fishing in the Driftless: Crickets
For information on Rich Osthoff's Signature Flies and Guided Trips visit:
www.richosthoff.com/
For the past few summers, I've been returning from Western trips late in the Driftless season. Last October, I was welcomed by low water and heavy aquatic vegetation from strong summer rains. Terrestrials like Rich's Splat Cricket seemed the most practical way to fish parched and congested streams like this one. Especially when fish were so timid.
Streamers were working, but I was spooking fish, picking up weeds, and hanging up too often for my liking. Similarly, droppers were off the menu, as the stream was too shallow on average. More heavily hackled, large-winged terrestrial patterns might have been an option -- they offer great visibility and loft -- but they compromise on profile and castability. On water of this scale, we're just after a solid smack and a short drift: I'm not worried about losing sight of my fly. Different water may have fished completely differently that day, but this was what worked for me.
Besides, sticking to a pattern and exploring headwaters is my favorite way to wrap up the Wisconsin fishing season. Just get in and fish - Dale Osthoff

With Wisconsin temperatures down to -30°F this week, and wind chills 50 below, we find ourselves looking back to summer. In the last days of July 2018, we covered 25 miles of the Bob Marshall's South Fork of the Flathead, taking in some incredible landscapes and landing some dandy cutthroat. Here's a look at our 10 days in The Bob.

Rich's First New Zealand Trip

In February 2016, Rich fished the South Island of New Zealand with Will and Todd all three of us first-time NZ anglers. The trip was graciously hosted by Ralph, a veteran of many New Zealand trips. Check out Ralph in the opening scene of this video as he subdues a rampaging 10-lb. brown (multiple jumps) on a size 16 mayfly nymph and 4X tippet. As first timers, Will, Todd and I blew our share of ...
Hopper & Cricket Fly-Fishing in the Driftless
Переглядів 15 тис.7 років тому
If you like to prospect in the Driftless with a dry fly, a hopper or a cricket is a good bet to move lots of bigger-than-average browns. Rich's foam-bodied Splat-Cricket is heavy enough to tuck cast with a distinct splat, which really pulls trout from grassy undercuts. In fishing big terrestrials, don't strive for long drifts. Instead, chop a run into multiple short drifts. Plopping the fly dow...

Long shot you'll see this, but if I'm fishing in Eastern Idaho and camping there, what secluded water do you recommend? I hope to camp on a river with good fishing, beautiful scenery and not many people.

I just found this channel. My wife is from Idaho, we now live in Utah where the rivers are so over fished its crazy. I am looking to fish Idahothis next year. For all those going on about removing the slime layer and killing the fish. Marine biologists scrape samples of slime to check the health of the ecosystem. If slime is removed frequently fish have the ability to increase their slime glands to reproduce slime more quickly. Isn't nature amazing!!

Stop using fabric to tail the fish. The fabric rubs the protective slime off the fish. Get a rubber net. It will not rub the slime off when wet.

im all for 90% of this video and so cool to see you taking your kids out. but tailing towels and gloves? you're killing most those fish you handle. might as well keep them. id love to see you promote better fish handling because you have a giant following. Not trying to be a hater just trying to watch out for the awesome opportunity it is to catch those fish in such a pristine place. Thanks again for the cool content.
