Your Band Won't Get Famous (And WHY You Should Still Try)
Being in a musician in a serious band can be an emotional rollercoaster. You spend years playing gigs, traveling, making records, establishing yourself in a scene...and then one day it all falls apart and you have to rebuild the vision that you had for your life. Here is my story of going through that process, and what it taught me about what it means to pursue a dream.

I went to Kenya and Made SYNTHS from LIONS

I started a band last year at the age of 55. We're various ages, the singer is older than me and the drummer is 34 years younger than me. What's great is none of that matters. We're enjoying it, loving the thrill of live gigs and living in the moment. We don't care about being big and famous, we just love it when our audience has a great time. Don't start a band to be rich and famous, start a band to have some rewarding fun ❤

What an awesome video and reality check Sam! I recently found you when looking for PolyBrute 12 demos and yours was the best. I'm a 61 year old fart and I was pretty delusional in my early years(and wasn't that great of a guitarist, producer). The fact is that it's so hard to get noticed these days and the changes to everyone has their own home studio has saturated the market so much, you really have to be a 2.5 minute hitmaker that churns out the same recipe as everyone else. Any off-beat genres just won't cut it. The true joy comes from within. We are the music makers and dreamers of dreams❤

It's been quite special, being witness to much of this journey. Your drive and talent has always been apparent. I always knew you and the band would have notability, throughout the world. May the journey continue, as it will. I thought Out of the Beardspace, was way to good of a band, to make tons of commercial cash, but I think you did comparatively well, on that front anyway. It is great to see you all expanding individually and collectively. A very nice forever legacy, and loving community you all built, in Beardfest.

You always have an interesting perspective on things, Sam. I faced the same dilemma when I was young, although my bands were not contributing to the illusion of making it as well as yours. Late in life, I still am fervent about "Making It", but the definition for me has changed significantly. Now I live by the creed, "only a job that has no overtime or weekends, don't let music get in the way of life and don't let life get in the way of music". Now making it simply means to keep making music whenever I can. Too many musicians I knew or meet completely gave up music for life and that is a shame. Some want to get back in and rekindle their lost dream with a classic rock bar band. Not my cup of tea anymore. I would like to see you do a video when you are an old man talking about your musical journey, but unfortunately that will happen long after I'm gone. 🤘

That’s pretty cool. May I make a suggestion? Open the original recording in a spectrogram editor, like RX11. Alter the mid to upper harmonics to give the growl more bite. Then find a tonal element in the roar. There’s got to be one in there somewhere. Take that sine wave, (or the closest thing to it), and build an artificial harmonic series with it. You could add square waves at the same frequency, or duplicate the sine wave and copy and paste it into a new document and double it with some modulation or transpose it, then paste it back in the original. That might sound more natural than the granular delay.

I use an all hardware (no computer, SD recorder) system of four stations. Each station does something great that the others can't. Each station has one to three keyboards. Each station has a sequencer with a minimum of 8 measures. Each station can be comfortably programmed and performed on, seating is just a single stool in the middle of it all. My choice then is to use 1, 2, 3, or all 4 stations to make my song. I can place one station in sequence play for accompaniment, and then move to another station to add or lead. There is some, very little, MIDI keyboards controlling other stations as an option. Since each station is mostly independent of the other, syncing isn't complex. Some are not synced at all, not necessary since I am a practiced pianist and a good musician who has timing. Rare too, that any sequencers are quantized, free play recording or 77% quantize keeps the music human. So while there are 32 channels of synths (16 actually in stereo) it is very simple and permanently connected, I know each channel and synth well, know them so well I can sound design in my head and know which synth for each part before beginning actual sound design.
