Although I may be the only human on the planet with this view, but I couldn’t bare The Paternoster Gang. Madam Vastra (jut the entitlement of being a Madam) was so arrogant and self-righteous always acting as if she was the only source of true DW knowledge and wisdom. Her superiority manner and condescending speech towards Clara in Capaldi's debut was sickening. Jenny was basically just a putdown except when conveniently about to help fight the villains and Strax basically made the entire Sontaran race an ongoing joke (which sadly never was amusing). I suppose the kids loved it but even by DW standards the PG was a very juvenile and unnecessary edition to DW.

Hadn't really considered how the production order for 7B could have influenced the Clara characterization but interesting to see it all laid out like this. I wouldn't say any episodes are really dropping the ball in this regard but you can see why things could have been a little smoother. Also, feel like the claims of flanderization of 11 are grossly exaggerated and he isn't really that far off from the rest of his era in terms of character or performance. And I like how the Impossible Girl arc gets to kind of challenge him in a way that's pushing him to desperation. And the people who say 11 and Clara don't have chemistry I've never understood. You can argue it's not as complex or dynamic as other pairings but they definitely gel well. I do hope Big Finish can get some audios out of those two since I think there's still a lot you can mine from that dynamic (there definitely seems to be sizeable gaps of time between Name/Day/Time of the Doctor so you got a lot of room to explore there). I'd say I prefer 7B to to 7A. It feels like it has more of a clear focus and intent and having 8 episodes instead of 5 makes it feel a little more complete (even if the average episode quality of both is not as high as we'd all maybe would want) . I do think we could have had a bit more going on with Amy and Rory before their departure (particularly in regards to River). I went into this in a different video covering the whole of the Matt Smith era but I definitely think the reception of S6 and various production things around this season definitely had a strong influence in the season being the way it is with it being a lot less serialized and not focusing on the Silence/Trenzalore related business nearly as much. We know Moffat was planning on having Matt Smith around for S8 so that might be part of why there's so little of the big arc business in S7 since he may have just assumed he had more time for it rather than needing to put a lot of it in Time of the Doctor.

I think it’s fine. A lot of variety and imagination on display. Just a shame Moffat was too overworked to polish things properly. 1. Hide 2. The Rings of Akhaten 3. The Bells of Saint John 4. The Name of the Doctor 5. The Crimson Horror 6. Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS 7. Nightmare in Silver 8. Cold War

I find it funny that Moffat thought Clara was just as "looney" as the Doctor early on. I guess this is where "Clara Who" came from later on with 12 where she tries to be so much like the Doctor to the point where it gets her killed. I like 7B. It's not the greatest but I do like Clara and 11 together. They should have had a full series together: first half with Victorian Clara before she died, second half with Modern Clara. It would have fleshed out their relationship a lot better. Half a series just isn't enough for a rapport to be established between the two. And the "sex it up" concept... nahhh. Leave that out. Playful flirting is fine, but outright romance between the Doctor and a Companion, no. I can see why a Companion might fall for the Doctor, but not why he would ever become attracted to a mortal human who has the lifespan of a gnat compared to him. Thanks for the analysis!

I really enjoy Series 7, it's actually one of my favourites out of the new series run. It was interesting to have Amy and Rory leave halfway through the series and have Clara come in for the rest. It feels like a fun ride from start to finish. I remember getting such good vibes at that time when it was airing. And it's always awesome to see people mention the Valarie Lockwood Adventures. It slots in perfectly inbetween Parts 1 and 2 of series 7. The 11th Doctor officially has 4 seasons under his belt now with Amy, Rory, River, Valarie and Clara. No Arguments! 😁The 11th Doctor is my favourite Doctor. :)

Well, I'm not adopted, but, again, from what I know from people who are - could have used a sensitivity reader again - a recurring problem this season. And the focus on memory is just incoherent imo. It didn't think through half of the things it's trying to tie together, leaving the whole thing very muddled, even as he tells us this is the theme he wants. But, hey, that's Rusty for you!

@@thevacuumofcomments2946 RTD trying to pull a TLJ on us (it's so funny that he has stated that was his intent when people were guessing he might do this before the finale aired) is a bit annoying but I think there COULD have been a version of the story he was going for here. Namely that something important to somebody is made more universally important or is hyped up to a crazy degree (and in a similar vein to Clara's leaf there is infinite potential in something like that). The main problem is the whole thing is woefully under explained if at all. It's unclear how the perception filter got involved, how the snow managed to keep happening, why exactly the memory got changed (people have already gone over the sign pointing being lame) or why Ruby's mom's DNA wasn't traceable in 2023-4 when she's a nurse. RTD included all this various nonsense so that the pay off of Ruby's mom being a regular person can't account for all of that with the way its been presented. I mean at least with Rey in TLJ the main thing that her parents being nobodies (at least at the time) created issues with was the shear degree of power and quick learning she had in the Force, which isn't great but its at least a bit less complicated (and at least you can throw in the excuse the sequel trilogy had less of a clear plan under one guy).

Series 7b is probably my favourite! It's basically the main reason Smith is my favourite Doctor, over Capaldi. I loved seeing Smith portray a more darker version of the Doctor, he did an amazing job at it! I honestly prefer the s8/9 version of Clara, she's still a bit too young here. But still great! The Snowmen is my favourite Christmas special. The Bells of Saint John is my favourite companion introduction. The Time of the Doctor is tied as my favourite series finale, with Hell Bent. The Day of the Doctor is my favourite special And The Time of the Doctor is my favourite regeneration! Probably because those are the episodes I've re-watched the most (excluding Blink, Heaven Sent & The Girl in the Fireplace), because I just find "the Impossible Girl" such a great story arc. I wish Moffat the best, and I think he should stay away from this show- Boom was as great as it could be, and I'm sure the upcoming christmas special will be too! But he did drive me away from the show for 5 years with his series 10 (which I always try to pretend doesn't exist), and I just don't want that to happen again. -yeah I didn't get further than "kindest reaction I've seen is a shrug"

Nah. 11th is the same he's always been with like few bad moments that blown out of proportion because they all happened close to each other near the end. Also, Name of the Doctor probably one the best in whole show that had the unfortunate to have to come before the 50th. Yeah, 7B has some issues mainly due to behind scene stuff but it’s not any messier most this show has been since day one. I think it's more of a mix it been on for awhile at this point fans standards started getting ridiculous being harder and picker like all fandoms do over time.

    • @thevacuumofcomments2946

Well, you know this is coming from a place of love. I agree that 11 has been like this for the majority of his run, his performance here is more in line with S6 than S5. This makes sense! In your first series leads try different things before they settle on what they do for the rest of the show. I just think this coincided with Matt having large casts to bounce off and there wasn't much time to get used to just having one companion again afterwards

    • @CrazyGoth631
      @CrazyGoth631 10 днів тому

True but even S5 I don't think it's much different. 11 probably one of if not most consistent Doctors we had why could never agree with 7B ruined him over few bad moments. I can point to all kinds WAAAAY more bad and questionable moments with 10 but they were more spread out. Guess what I'm try to say with this and my first common timing can make things seem worst then they really are. More forgiving of things towards the beginning like timing of Eps, good or bad moments so on. It’s also hard for people to get over preconceive ideas when they been instilled into the fandom. If everyone is yelling about something every single day for years doesn't matter if it's true or blown out of proportion its hard for most to get over that. 😵‍💫

    • @defrostedrobot77

Bit of a non-sequitur but with all the discourse around 15's crying I do want to say that Name of the Doctor has one of the stronger scenes of the Doctor crying when he's found out about the whole Trenzalore situation in Angie and Artie's house. 11 actually cried actually close to half a dozen times in his tenure (Flesh and Stone, Doctor's Wife, Wardrobe, Angels Take Manhattan, etc.) when I really thought about it but I think they managed to space it out enough where it managed to be effective and hold some weight in each instance. With 15 they've played that card a few too many times in such a short span of episodes and its just making it less impactful the more it happens (even if most of the time the crying has justifiable reasons). Not against men crying or anything (Dean Winchester did and we appreciate him for it) but even with the vast majority of characters in TV and the like I wouldn't recommend falling back on that so constantly as a matter of principle cause it gets repetitive and starts to feel like a tactic for easy audience engagement.

  • @defrostedrobot77

I think if the narrative wanted this to be a put Ruby being arrogant in assuming she knew how to save the world and that causing issues we needed a) a reason for why doesn’t think stopping Gwilliam earlier is a good idea b) we really needed to have a moment afterwards where she realized she messed up and maybe reaches some kind of despair at not being rid of this thing before making some kind of peace with it down the line. And then of course we have the whole thing where people can’t decide if Gwilliam is part of the Mad Jack thing or not. Which is part of the frustrating part of the discourse of this one cause so many people think it’s clear what was happening when it doesn’t really seem that way. And having some ambiguity is fine but when you create so many avenues and leave so much open you end up with more hole than story. If you a decent episode with some ambiguity there’s the S4 finale of Buffy and if you want an emotional story where someone has lost someone and trying to fix it over a long time there’s DS9’s The Visitor. As for this episode, I’m not gonna say it’s all bad but I can’t really say I like it all that much.

I do wish i could like this episode. So many things should work for me but they're still aren't clicking. If Devil's Chord was hampered by being a mid-season episode stuck in the episode 2 slot, this one was tanked by not being an episode 10 or a season 2 story. I do not have a firm enough grasp on the new companion, the new companion's family or the new Doctor for such a dramatic switch-up to hit because there is not yet an established status quo to overturn. Turn Left does not work as an episode 4.

Like the daugher being completely unfazed by her dead ai dad by the end and then the snow drop at the end made me roll my eyes. I just dont buy any of that being a happy ending. Hmm. I'm not sure the Time Lord Victorious comparison is apt for some subtle reasons. Textually, Ruby doesn't think she has a _right_ to choose, this destiny has been thrust upon her from her eyes. It's a different pathology. It's Judge, Jury and Executioner, in the former, vs just Executioner in the latter. The Doctor chooses the victors, Ruby instead thinks, it seems to me, that her job is to choose the best path to stop the pre-determined loser. And if people get harmed along that path, if there's collateral damage, that's regrettable, but it's better for there to be an overall stronger chance for that pre-determined loser to be stopped. TLV is, under two of the three of the major normative moral systems, wrong, categorically, under any circumstances. (And is wrong under like half of that final third. Only Act Utilitarians are chill with it.) What Ruby is doing is, uh, questionable? But it's less obviously wrong. It depends a _lot_ on specifics related to the context surrounding her, the specific probabilities, and her own mental states. If her intent is honestly to just single-mindedly go after Gwilliam and has determined this is the best path to do so, it's _plausibly_ okay, if she also tries to help Marti in other ways (which she didn't, *_which does call into question her motivations)._* But if she's using Marti as a distraction or a tool in some way that's just not kosher. She does seem to treat Marti's interiority as lesser than her own, which is the biggest red flag. But the mere fact of there being horrific collateral damage is not in itself invalidating to Kantians, Virtue Ethicists, or Utilitarians. (See, like, the application of Double Effect for Virtue Ethicists, for instance. It's a messy case but not clearly and obviously wrong, though very plausibly so.)

Good points. For me, there is some overlap, as from what I could tell, Ruby does use Marti as a tool to at least some extent. So, the running theme is people who aren't wrapped up in the web of history being seen as more expendable. Tho you're right in that the positions 10 and Ruby are in are very different (the latter just makes me way more uneasy- by design)

@@thevacuumofcomments2946 I think _that's_ a deeper problem than TLV though. It's Great Man theory Doctor Who style, which shows up again and again throughout the show. (But yes, the entire sequence is gross and there's really no reason it needed to be there.)
