i had a bamboo in an old septic tank. the tank is 2 m deep, 2.5 m wide and about 2.5 m long. i collapsed the roof. the walls of the tank are 15 cm reinforced concrete. precisely because it's so well build i put the bamboo in there. i was keeping an eye on the bamboo for a few years and then one year it shot a rhizome down along the wll at least 1.5 meters. i dug around it and was barely able to pull the rhizome out. my fear was if it keeps going down it will go under the concrete and come back up again on the other side. then i found another rhizome that went straight down for about one meter and came back up. i found another rhizome that found a single tiny fracture in the corner of the concrete and shot into it and out into the garden. the point of this whole story is, you never know with bamboo. i prepared very well for mine, kept an eye on it for a long time and in the end it managed to find a way to escape. i dug it out and destroyed it. now i have the bamboo bug biting me again and i'm looking for other people's experiences with the plant.

My Dissectum Viridis is 107 years old. 12 ' x 20' spread. 28 years of aesthetic pruning. It's an art. Large branches are removed during the dormant period (Jan/Feb) and a lighter summer pruning. It's a methodical process. I am close to the look of a Bonsai tree I seek. Truly spectacular. Green all summer and scarlet red/orange in the fall.

I should not have listened to the “expert” where I bought two 2 gallon beautiful bamboo pots. I knew they spread but he assured me that if I cut off the bottom of the plastic pot, it would prevent the bamboo from spreading. It actually worked with one of the pots with the variegated bamboo but the totally green bamboo grew out of control. So many of the “life happens” happened and I was not able to tend to my garden. I read that if you pour boiling water on the area it will destroy the rhizomes. It did actually help a little, but not enough. I asked someone I worked with who is from the Philippines and she said they use a blow torch and burn the rhizomes with the blow torch. Well, I use a chain saw and a lot of other tools, but somehow a blow torch was not something I was about to do. I had to remove all of my beautiful hostas because the bamboo was choking them out. I found a tool which is half axe and half three prong sharp forked side. It worked on the tree roots from 100 year old trees so I figured I would try it. The most important thing I found was to cut the bamboo down to the ground. I don’t try and pull up the rhizomes in one piece it is just too hard. I sit on the ground, lift the rhizomes up with the forked end of the tool, and use the axe side to chop the rhizomes into pieces and lift each piece up. I think it helped to cut the cum down because for some reason if you pick the right one it allows me to lift the rhizome up. I don’t try to do this every day but I time an hour or an hour and a half to work on this, my least favorite part of gardening.

Hi Teresa (hope i spelled your name right) how are you? I just love the way you present your videos and you are one of the very few people i have subscribed to. I am currently attempting to relocate several bamboo plants that have a good size root ball. Can i cut them into smaller size on the root ball so i can plant them in a line for a border? And if so should i dig a trench and line with plastic to contain the roots? Im not sure of the species. I want to say they are golden something. Please forgive me i am brand new to this. They have been in the ground for several years and came out with a large root ball. And finally , will they grow back if they were cut down? Im really hoping i can revive these beautiful plants they once were. My neighbor was going to throw them away. I apologize for the lengthy message and all my rookie questions. But your the only one i watch. Thank you so much for your videos. Hope to hear from you. Jack

Japanese black pine grow two full flushes of growth per season. This allows the entire candle to be removed. Doing so will not kill the branch of a heathy trees as long as there are needles behind the cut to alllow sap flow. Removing the entire candle will stimulate the tree to grow the second growth, or flush, with a higher number of buds. This is classic bonsai technique called “mekiri”. We typically time the exact timing of removing the candle. Again “mekiri”. Is the removal of the entire candle. It’s usually done in mid June. By that time the candle is usually fully open and does not look like a candle. If we de-candle later in the summer the second flush has less number of summer days to develop. This with increasing the ramification (more branch division) causes the needles to grow much shorter. If we decandle early in the season we force the second flush to develop prematurely. This allows more time for the second flush to develop allowing longer needles. Bonsai and garden tree pruning have some similarities. They are also different. Unfortunately the tree in the video did not have traditional pruning early in its life so it still looks like a Christmas tree. Pruning for shape should ideally be started a little earlier in the tees life. Master Japanese gardeners devote their lives to mastering this art. Seeing a fully developed Japanese garden tree is an emotion experience. It’s hard to describe in words. There are such few people who know these techniques outside of Japan. Certain Japanese gardens around the world also have high quality Japanese black and red pines. Still it’s hard to compare to the gardens of Japan. I wish more young people would take an interest at learning this art form and recognizing how much knowledge is required to develop works class trees. There is relatively little information available in the west regarding this art form. Few Japanese books have been translated and few westerners go to Japan to learn the art of growing garden trees. The best source to learn proper pruning of Pinus Thunbergeii is probably the bonsai community compared to the gardening community. All the best, MH
