You're awesome! I was trying to figure out how to do this and came across your video. I ordered all of the products through your link and will post again once I use them. Thank you!
Hey. I have a problem. I connected all of the cables just like you. Only thing I do different is using a SCART cable cause my VCR don't have three color cinch out. When I press Play my blue screen in OBS do not change. It stay blue though the tape in VCR is running. What I am doing wrong?
Solved it. You need a chinch cable. The scart does not work. Eventually you need a cable with one end as scart to the VCR and the other end with chinch. Works like a charm
Am just NOW discovering this 2023 video in June 2024. You are extremely thorough in all facets. Specific reason for commenting is I'd like to do the REVERSE: Record ONTO VHS from my iMac desktop. Am able to mirror my iMac to my Samsung TV - but - that's where I'm stuck. Would GREATLY appreciate your help in getting me to the finish line.
Have never thought to record the content from my computer to VHS. My assumption is that is would work, but I would have to test that. If I ever try it I will let you know.
@@LivinginthePast2021 Am VERY appreciative of your return note. For what it's worth - and I'm an admitted complete tech NOVICE - I agree that it *should* work. Do you think it's feasible to use the same "tools" you outlined in your video, but simply reverse the inputs/outputs? Again, I'm grateful for your kind reply! Continued success!!
I am doing as you show on video, but in the end image doesn't appear. I can hear tha voice on my laptop but can't see the image. shows no signal. Could you please advise me what I can do to fix the problem?
Sure you can just watch without recording anything. In fact that is what I do most of the time, and only record if I find something interesting that I want a digital copy of. FYI here is an updated video for this process (but pretty similar info) - ua-cam.com/video/KbM5fBYlF9c/v-deo.html
I ordered the gizmos you prescribed and brought my VCR up from the basement, blew the dust off of it, and started to hook things up. I quickly discovered that my VCR has in and out ports for yellow and white, but not red. Will this still work for me or do I need to try to find an old VCR that has all 3?
It will still work. My understanding is the newer VCR's have the red where as the older ones not. Here is a newer video I did which shows both and older model vs. a newer but you should be fine with yours. ua-cam.com/video/KbM5fBYlF9c/v-deo.html
@@LivinginthePast2021 I got it to work on my desktop and was able to view the videos I wanted to record. When I tried to record, however, I got an error message stating that the output failed and I needed to check the log. The message also mentioned encoders and told me to make sure they are up to date. I could not figure out if I have these encoders on my computer (I'm not a techie), but figured my 10-11 year old computer probably doesn't have updated encoders. I then switched to our laptop which is a few years newer, and loaded OBS onto it. It worked! I was able to record a video. I am so pleased! I had not seen these home videos for more than 20 years. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this and for responding to my questions so promptly. You are doing a great service.
@@robinnc5406 Comments like this make my day. Thanks so much for taking time to write and let me know you were successful. I know the feeling as the first time I got it to work I was so happy and loved being able to see and record my old VHS tapes. Glad it worked for you, enjoy your memories on VHS tapes!
I just looked up OBS Studio and it looks like it requires an enormous amount of space on your computer and possibly a computer with special digitizing capabilities. Am I correct on this, or will a standard desktop PC with Windows 10 work? I don't want to buy all the parts I need if I can't download and use the OBS Studio. I love your video, clarity, and sense of humor. Thanks!
You don't need anything that fancy to run OBS. . . but the better the processer the less pull on your computer (if you are looking to do other stuff while recording your tapes). I started doing this with a cheap HP laptop that had an i3 processor. . . it worked fine but OBS would take up about 10-13% of my CPU while connected to my VCR. Now I have an HP ZBook that has an i7 processor and OBS uses less than 1% of my CPU. OBS is less than 500KB so it is small. . . but when you record your video files can get rather large. I plug in an external hard drive and write all of my recordings to it vs. my computer hard drive. Just for example, I just did about 100 minutes of a recording on the 2nd highest quality and it took up about 17GB. You don't have to record that much at a time but if you are looking to just put in a tape and record the whole thing then a big hard drive or external hard drive is gonna be important. Standard desktop with Windows 10 should be fine as OBS is compatible with Windows 10 and 11 (but not XP). Hope that makes sense and helps.
OK! I downloaded OBS Studio onto my desktop computer and ordered the hardware and exterior storage that I need. I look forward to trying it out. Hoping that my old videos aren't too old to be of any worth in this project, but even if they are. I'll update once I've had the chance to try it.

Thank you for this info
I think its more about being able to share the video digitally than it is to store for a long period of time in the computer.
Thank you so much!!! Great video. Everything worked great!!
