For many gardeners, space in the garden comes at a premium. This is especially true for patio gardeners. Thus the tomatoes from the Dwarf Tomato Project would be a great choice. The Dwarf Tomato Project has been going on for 15 years, but they are becoming more and more popular each year. This year I am growing 8 dwarf tomato varieties to see what the hype is all about. Black Swallowtails lay eggs on the fennel - host plant for the caterpillars. Ouch

    • @thelittlethingsinlife4822
      @thelittlethingsinlife4822 10 днів тому

      Yes they do! I used to hate it because they laid like crazy on my carrots and fennel. Now that I have the giant fennel in the garden that goes to seed each year, that has seemed to attract most of them. It's a win- win because they get to reproduce and live their best life, while my smaller more susceptible plants are generally left alone...but the butterflies at least...

      @@thelittlethingsinlife4822 I guess when you harvest the carrots - putting the tops at the fennel would be a good idea. Babies can find it. wow - I wouldn't have pulled that first tomato. Didn't look cat faced to me - looked like a regular double? Probably the best Tomato of my life was a White Tomesol. Great choice. And I love VS.

      In Truth, I could have left if on the vine and it would have ripened up just fine. I pulled it because it was still so early in the season, and I prefer this variety for slicing so I got rid of it so the energy could go to making new ones. (also the costoluto genovese makes soooo many tomatoes I wasn't worried about affecting the production. I am super excited about the White tomesol. I cannot wait for the first ripe one.

      Hi Jerrel, Thank you for the comment. I got my grow lights from Lowes. They are 4 ft long LED lights grow lights made by general electric. I use two of them for each shelf to get enough light. I like them because I can link several of them together to increase the lighting, they are easy to move up and down by adjusting the chains that hang them, and they are also water resistant so I don't have to worry too much about water dripping onto them if my trays leak a bit. I know there are many different lights out there to choose from so it can be hard to figure out what would be best. I initially picked these up because they were easy to get. I have heard that you can use regular shop lights as well. When I expand my seed starting area I will probably look at some alternatives because it would be nice to have one light per a shelf with more evenness in light across the whole area, and the lights I have had a slight red tint that hurts my eyes when I am in there too long.

    I'm changing up my variety this year. I went with the Purple Russian, Black Krim, German Johnson. and my usual Beefsteaks and Roma. Can't wait to see how your plants do this year!

    OH! One last thing. I grew Brad's Atomic Grape last year and you need to wait until you see some orange before picking them. And they are delicious.

    I have grown or am growing right now or I own the seeds (I am in South Florida and we are in the middle of our growing season) for most of the tomatoes on your list. I am going to check out Black Prince because I don't have that one. I love Blondekopfchen for a cherry that is delicious and productive. And Juliet always does well for me, even when everything else in the garden is going to sh*t.

      This is the first time I have heard of Blondekopfchen. Looks like I great producer of sweet cherries and I have heard great things about Juliet too. If I put in another seed order, I might add there in.

    White Tomesol will go on record as the best Tomato I've ever had. Bursting with flavor, complex and insanely balanced. When you get a good one - oh my god. And whoa - I LOVE Virginia Sweets. Good job on your choices!

      That surprises me about White Tomesol. I can't believe I didn't try them when I grew them before. Now I definitely looking forward to trying them. Do you have a favorite Tomato that I didn't list?

    Black Krim is one of my favorite tomatoes. I think Cherokee Purple and Black Krim taste very similar but CP is a poor producer for me so I prefer BK. I didnt care for the taste of Black Prince and they only set fruit if it was cooler weather. As soon as it started getting a little hot they quit producing for me.

    • @thelittlethingsinlife4822
      @thelittlethingsinlife4822 4 місяці тому

      Oooh interesting. When I tried Cherokee Purple before, it didn't' produce too much either. Perhaps Black Krim is worth trying this year. If Black Prince only produces in cooler weather then it may not be a good choice for me. Maybe if I plant it in a place with afternoon shade, that might help. Thank you for sharing and happy gardening.

    • @cynthiamartinez5884
      @cynthiamartinez5884 4 місяці тому

      @thelittlethingsinlife4822 Afternoon shade will definitely help. I grew Black Prince twice, the first year it didn't produce. The second year I planted it a little earlier and on the other side of the yard with shade late in the day and finally got some tomatoes.

    Hi! I just wanted to let you know the Lilian Caseload Peas are a compact vine variety and it's normal for the vines to be 2 to 3 ft. vines. I live in zone 9b in Texas. My peas don't do well in the spring but do way better planted for fall. You might try starting your peas later in the summer and see if they do better.

    • @thelittlethingsinlife4822
      @thelittlethingsinlife4822 4 місяці тому

      Thank you! Do you stake them if they get up to 3ft tall or will they self support if you grow enough of them together? I will certainly try growing in the fall too. Thank you for the recommendation.
