End-of-Life Doula in Ecuador
Meet Sophia Plonski, an End-of-Life Doula in Ecuador. Sophia is the perfect model of how a non-medical person can create great change within the healthcare system in a country with little end-of-life care.
There is only one hospice in Quito Ecuador, where she lives, and she has been invited to conferences to speak about end of life care and end of life doula support, co-founded an organization (La Red Latinoamericana de Acompañamiento) which has members from many countries within Mexico and Latin America--all for the purpose of making the dying time better.
She was invited into the family of Paula Roldan, who made news, as she dealt with her own journey with ALS, to make Medical Aid in Dying legal in Ecuador. Sophia, as Paula's end-of-life doula, also supported her fight to change these laws in Ecuador, which Paula got to see happen before her death.
Listen in to Sophia's incredible story of following her heart to make dying better for people and their families.

    I have also done this work for many years - my grandmother began with me in 1965 as a young girl. I am a Medicine Woman with 40 years as of 2023, and a Wise Woman Elder Shaman. Being a Shaman has been a stellar life, yet one with many experiences, some of them beyond painful. No one would want to be a Shaman, perhaps, a "Shamanic Practitioner?" Once you take off the rose-colored glasses and you can still be fully present, aware, kind, and generous you will know, but that likely won't happen before age 60, much as your program is ideal for those in their 40s to 60s years of life. It is mandatory that you were, actively a Medicine One before you would ever, become a Shaman.

    Deanna...thank you for doing this. I've brought much of these"bag essentials" to seniors, starting out in 2001. I started out going to seniors homes and then to LTC. When I left nursing in acute care in 2000, my co-workers thought I was crazy. I started a private integrative office practice and brought much of this to adults and seniors. I loved it. I then started working assisted living and can teaching which was gratifying....but having found EOLD information on te web was a blessing. I feel this is what my "out of the box mentality" was meant for. I am so looking forward to getting out there and helping people live their dying passage with dignity, love and peace. best wishes to you, blessings!

    Your amazing! Thank you for your videos. You are helping me feel more and more confident in my choice of becoming an end of life doula. I am a care aid but I want to help guide the person dying into their next journey and I want to be there for the families as well. I just want to support everyone involved to make a difference and to help with the healing process after the loved on has passed. I appreciate that you took the time to make these videos. :)

    Thank you so much for your videos Deanna. I'm a retired RN and just enrolled in a death doula course in Toronto. I'm so looking forward to it. As a busy nurse we didn't have a lot of time to spend with end-of-life patients. Being a doula will let me have the time that I always wanted with the clients.

    I am so grateful to you for everything you said about how this calling makes you feel in relationship to other people. Thank you. I've felt like a total freak for a very long time. This calling hit me head on in 2011 and although I tried to find a way to meet this calling then, I only found the healing in myself and the courage to move forward a few weeks ago when I discovered this role as a possibility. I'm so grateful and relieved that I hardly know how to speak about it. I just feel joy.

    Can being with our dogs patting them and playing ball will that also bring or energy back up? Cause they are alive

    • @sacredbalancebe
      @sacredbalancebe 3 роки тому

      Yes, I absolutely believe it can. When you're playing with your dogs, there is movement, there is laughter, there is life force. Many shamans emphasize the importance of play, of laughter, of singing, of dancing/moving.

    I had my NDE when I was at the dentist from too much laughing gas 50 years ago. It was much later I was told to take classes with a Shaman. I took Reiki healing instead and became a master and teach it now to others. But now being told to do end of life work, so I have done alot of work over last 20 years to help others. Been do Volunerring with seniors chatting, playing games like scrabble or cribbage while they are still able. Now I want to dig deeper.

    Which oils might be good to use at that time, uplifting or citrus type to cover up the smell of the room, your bag must be very heavy and the car must be large with guitar and massage table and this bag. Your muscles will be strong, but you have all that will make it nice for the patient and family cause they will not think about all of these things. I would ask the family to bring in picture frames and old pictures of things they liked to do in the past if none there already.

    Do any of the nursing homes carry any of these items like some alter items, diffuser, special lighting, light up candles we can use instead of carrying them in this bag? I know u are in the states and might be different than Canada. This might be a good thing we can suggest they carry for the families in the future if they have any extra donations money or items people left

    Thank you so much, Deanna! I definitely have this calling, it hit me like a freight train when my Mother in Law came to our home on hospice last week. I was destined to find this and you. your list has a lot of wonderful items for creating a beautiful space for everyone including yourself. it is lovely. i was wondering what kind of very practical items you may keep with you as well (like cotton swabs, towels, plastic bags, those sponge swabs for mouths, gloves, etc)? Also, how do you promote your services and do you have any kind of legal contract between you and your client regarding your services?

    I am a Nursing Aide and am curious about this course. Is this something that a patient and a family would hire you to do? I have taken the Hospice volunteer training that is offered in my own. It was a 8 week course ( 3 hour sessions) that taught us how to provide an atmosphere for people to feel open to talk about their feelings..at the 3 main age levels..is this something similar...more voluntary work?Dawn
