COARSE Ground Aeropress? Game - changer!

In our episode of Java Royale where we pitted the Chemex against the Aeropress, some of you had questions about why we used such a coarse grind size for the Aeropress. In this episode of Let's Brew It we're going to taste test a "regular" grind against a coarse grind. Tyler has never tried coarse ground Aeropress before. Can we convince him that coarser is better? Nice. Channels need more blind taste tests to eliminate bias.

I bought a Cosori pour over, and enjoy pour over coffee method better, it has a more robust flavor and tastes stronger (to me).

I've also used a cloth filter. Cutting up an old T-shirt gives you a large supply of Aeropress filters.. One or two of them together works pretty well, and then you don't have any paper to discard.

My favorite might be immersion with better filtering, which I suppose is kind of a hybrid. I've used the Chemex flask to immerse the ground coffee, and then filter it into a jar with a coffee sock.

I just use the larger Aeropress and treat it exactly like any old press pot. No need for watering down calculations.

This test shows only that you didn't do enough research over clever brewing methods. The color of the brew shows that it probably needed a finer grind and you can go pretty fine with Clever. And put water first damnit.

French Press tastes better than filter. Also if you don't pour out all the coffee from tbe FP, almost all the sediment stays in the FP giving a clean tasting cup of joe.

If it tasted sour it could have just been under extracted and maybe not a fair assessment.

Arguing about the waste of paper filters, something completely compostable and the amount of paper per cup being minimal always seems silly to me. It's not even worth expending the mental energy worrying about this when there are so many other factors that are much more wasteful than a paper filter for your morning cup of coffee. If we really wanted to go there, let's talk about the chemex papers and how much larger and thicker those are, but then again, let's not, for the same reasons i mentioned.

I'd never brew coffee in plastic. Chemex is healthier too as it removes the bad oils.

Thanks surprised, Clever is my daily driver. experimenting with the coffee on top of water method ua-cam.com/video/jZSKcxokisw/v-deo.html and convinced boiling water best to the extent that I'll put my whole clever loaded with hot water into the microwave on low to keep at near boil entire immersion time.

It appears as though they began pressing the french press as soon as the water was added. What about stirring in a little water, allowing a bloom, adding the rest and not pressing until after 4 mins (ready to drink?) This wasn't really a test of one coffee making style vs another. It was a test of weak flavoured coffee vs strong coffee. No surprise strong coffee won.

If two people always agree, there isn't a use for one of the people! I think there could be a round two, with a tweaked ratio for the chemex For 8 oz, try approx 14 g grinds with approx 280 g water, same bloom time, use a goose neck to be able to pour just little bits and you won't get that watered down effect Double for a bigger brew, but only if your cup can fit it

Just got a Clever. Also have an AeroPress, French Press, and plastic pour over. I enjoy all of them. Really liking the Clever's brew method and experimenting with grind size. Next will be switching coffee from medium-dark to medium for my Clever. Medium roasts have been sour for me in my pour over so I plan to let them brew a little longer in my Clever. Really want a new grinder. Considering the new Fellow Ode Gen2. Just having too much fun with all this. Makes me really look forward to mornings as well as afternoon cups. Funny video review. Cheers all..!! PS - How do you like the carafe used in the video? I just got a Fellow Mighty Small. I like it except it seems to always have a drip hanging outside of its pour spout. I might also try a Hario Range Server to see if I like it better.

How did I find this shot?! I'm about fed up with bland tasting with fine or medium fine gind. Then out of desperation I just winged it for something new. For taste. So my hand grinder has a dial. 0-1 full turn is med fine. Did that for 30 second. I've never went over 1.5 turns. But I did go to 2 turns at 30 seconds. So I have 2 kinds of grinds. I should of just went with what u guys had. Full course grind. So I had the 2 and it was rather good. Better than fine grind. So my new game is course grind coffee. Also it really goes through the press easy. So might want to let it sit a bit. It's much better taste than find grind. Who drank my coffee.? That went down fast. Midnight drink 12:26am. Full moon sleep like a log. Zzz

French press is more environmentally friendly. No paper filters. I love the french press and I like the nutty flavor. I think you'd get a more intense flavor from a french press.

It's fascinating how there's like a million ways to make coffee with this thing and no consensus on what actually is best. What I would find interesting is that if you have 1 person specifically judge, can you derive a procedure that is optimal for that person's preferences, or will there be multiple vastly different routes to make a cup of coffee that the individual will not be able to distinguish one as superior?

I'm very late to comment, but just found this. I managed a coffee house for years, and am super picky, and was unsatisfied with the Aeropress until I accidentally used a grinder set to a courser level. It was a revelation. I now keep the grind on slightly courser than medium, and it's perfect.

I noticed this as well…I was using a fine grind and for some reason the taste wasn’t coming out very well. As soon as I changed the grind to something a little more coarse the flavor ended up becoming bolder and better which really surprised me.
