David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Saturday, 13 July, 2024; happy birthday, Mother!) Mr. Fearon, I appreciate you for your report. This looks to have been an ambitious project for a small firm to have attempted. Whilst I have considerable interest-U.S. Navy combat aircraft, especially carrier-based, are a high priority; Tamiya’s 1:32-scale kits of the Chance Vought F4U Corsair USN/USMC Fighter series certainly come immediately to mind-this kit has too many problems and difficulties with essential structures and key components that in the aggregate place it rather beyond my capacity (or, at least, my patience) to build. Thank you kindly, sir, for the warning. Maybe they can rework the kit to correct their mistakes, and in a year or so they could issue an appreciably improved kit of 1) the Curtis SB2C-5 Helldiver USN/USMC Dive Bomber, as well as 2) a separate kit building as the Curtis A-25 Shrike USAAF Dive Bomber. This latter iteration also would include alternate parts and call-outs in the instructions booklet that would enable one to build a correct Curtis SB2C-4 Helldiver model, if one wished. The company’s senior management might consider offering those who already had bought the earlier kit that demonstrably failed to assemble adequately a discount on this next release as a demonstration of good faith. As you have seen this SB2C-4 Helldiver kit, and I have a hunch of your appreciably greater expertise and experience in model-building-already have we viewers of your video seen indications that you know not only what the flaws are, but you have the skill to delineate how the company’s kit designers might correct them-I propose that you 1) tell them of my idea (namely, a follow-up kit of an SB2C-5 Helldiver, and a new one of a Curtis A-25 Shrike USAAF Dive Bomber, both with corrections, improvements, instructions notices, etc., that would enable a fairly capable model-builder to build a reasonably accurate SB2C-4 replica), and 2) your recommendations for the corrections you deem necessary. Or if not you, someone whose skills you know.
Hello David Many thanks for taking the time to write your comments and for their positive nature. Have you seen my video on the Trumpeter 1/32 Devastator? A MUCH easier build than the Helldiver, despite one or two mistakes/issues. Best regards Peter F
thank you for the sharing in 2024
Hi Alex Thanks for the message. Hope you found the video useful.
Nice upload, thank ya !! I've recently copped the Flyhawk version of HMS AGINCOURT. (Deluxe version & separate wood deck laminate) I love this stuff; get lost in it sometimes !! Add in reference material- ship's monographs/line drawings ? Look out.....8 month long build- easily. Because I will scratch build missing bollards, deck ventilators, ect. Yeah, a mental exam may be in my future !!.... 🚬😎👍
Hi Craig Thanks for the message. Let me know how you get on! Best regards Peter F
Bravo! Well done! Like Nigel, I also have HPH extras and Resin2detail sets as well. Your video is great and points out pitfalls I was unaware of. I also have the D3A1 with extras and I'm looking forward to building them both.
Hi Michael Many thanks for your kind comments. The kit was a challenging build but the finished model seems to have generated a lot of positive interest. I gave serious thought to the D3A1, another of my favourite aircraft, if only to see if it was any easier to build. Do let me know how you get on with yours. Best of luck with both projects! Best regards Peter F
Excellent job, and very instructive for the average modeller to turn a fundamentally sound model into a better representation of the real thing with some simple improvements. That's a whole lot better advice than to encourage them to dive into a complex project to make everything perfect.
Thanks for your appreciation. Really pleased you found it useful. Best regards Peter F
Thank you for sharing your skills and expertise on this project. I have recently purchased the Hasegawa 1/72nd scale kit and the Eduard photo etched kit for this model. Your video is going to be very helpful in my pursuit of completing my model. I hope to find information on the butterfly wing flaps that were unique to the aircraft and are represented in the Eduard photo etched kit. Thank you again for all your information. The idea of the difference in camouflage application never occurred to me, but is very logical. Larry Landis
Hi Larry Many thanks for the message. All the best for your project! Best regards Peter F
You can say the same thing about Spitfire models, “why do we need another one?” Different manufacturing techniques and build applications make it interesting and challengeable. On a side note, no manufacturer to my knowledge has the option of the portside sliding glass window on the canopy of the 109. Well maybe one day.
Many thanks for your interest. At least the scale was unique. The main thing that annoyed me about this kit was the silly 'lucky dip' gimmick which it appears was discontinued on subsequent Border offerings. It was an enjoyable built, though. Best regards Peter F
Sweet build!😊 in my experience 'badly warped' was a Revell company moto in the 70s😕... But their deficiencies made me a Monogram kid!
Thank you! In the 1960's Monogram were the best in the world in my view. They were just so hard to find and expensive here in the UK. I think Monogram didn't really think outside the US market. Revell were smarter. They set up factories in the UK, Japan, and elsewhere. In the end, it was no surprise that it was they who took over Monogram, rather than the other way round. I still love the kits they both produced from that time though.
Nice build. Hope your eyesight has recovered from that PE!
Just about, thank you. Using the desk mangifier is a big help!
Border are a bit notorious for their basic and often inadequate instructions.
Hi Brett Thanks for the message. It was annoying about that issue with the instructions because otherwise it was a really enjoyable build.
That is a beautiful build. About as gracefull an aircraft can look from top or bottom view. My dad flew them from CV 18 Wasp in WW2. Even got to crash one into the water on takeoff! Also was on his way to bomb Japan mid August 1945 when his flight was orderd to jettison thier bombs and return because Japan had surrendered. I have always loved the Helldiver. Suggest you maybe lift it with a hand or two so your viewers can be amazed at the scale. Keep having fun with the awesome work!
Thank you! I too have always liked the Helldiver. A better aircraft than it's often given credit for, especially after the -3 had sorted out most of the earlier problems. By coincidence, my dad also spent a lot of WW2 flying over water. In his case, it was flying ASW Wellingtons with RAF Coastal Command looking for U-boats. He never saw one. Best regards Peter F
I had that kit as a boy…
I never did. I had one or two others in the series, but not his one. I particularly remember enjoying the Zero!
Maybe Trumpeter can come up with a 1/32 scale version of this kit it would fit in with the rest of my collection
If they could do one that's as good as their Devastator I'm sure it would be a great seller.
@@peterfearon317 + I agree with you 100%
Maybe Trumpeter can come up with a 1/32 scale version of this kit it would fit in with the rest of my collection
As well as being a fellow modeller of far less skill, I have the pleasure of meeting up with this gentleman on an almost weekly basis in persuance of our other shared interest. He is very modest, and will give an honest opinion about the models he is making, as anybody who has read his articles in the [redacted] magazine will vouch for. Nice one, Peter!
Hi Terry Very kind comments, thank you. After the battle with the Infinity Helldiver, this project was light relief. Best regards Peter F
Nice build, how'd you stay focused for 6 weeks?
Hi Bill Thanks for the message. Sorry about the delayed response, I've only just got back from a spell in Indonesia. IWith regard to the build, I'd only just retired, so a concentrated kit build was a way of celebrating. Plus the fact that the magazine editor wanted it as quickly as possible...! Best regards Peter F
Cool model.
Hi There Thanks for the message. Apologies for the delayed response, I've just got back from a spell in Indonesia. Glad you liked the model. It was the most enjoyable build I've done for a while. Best regards Peter F
May I ask,why you have painted the P40 in the RAAF colours, and marked it as a USAAF aircraft
Hi There Lee Thanks for the message and sorry about the late reply. Just got back from a spell in Indonesia. I'm no expert on SEATO colours, but I'm sure the ones on the P-40 are accurate. They are USAF shades, not Australian, which looked similar but were in fact slightly different. Same applied to the RAF colours. The finish on all of the allied aircraft in the SEA theatre looked generally similar and this was reinforced by the white theatre markings that were rigorously and fairly consistently enforced. Hope that answers your question. Best regards Peter F
@@peterfearon317 AHH ok,thanks for that, appreciate you getting back to me, I've only ever known of RAF and RAAF aircraft in the SEAC theatre have the white ID bands, now thanks to you,my knowledge of this conflict is expanded,I only ever knew that the red centres of all roundels,USAAF included were omitted to stop the confusion with the Japanese Hinomaru meatball insignia Lee
Really nice. Your stuff deserves a lot more views.
Top-notch work. 👍👍
Thank you!
A much appreciated walk-through, as I'd heard of these kits, but have never seen one 🤔 . Given what this company are doing with 700th waterline models, it makes me wish Airfix would give their full hull 600th range of ships some love again. (even just adding some finer detail parts sprues &/or fret to them would make a big difference, as would adding a new kit or two to the range [heck; there's no shortage of Japanese 600th kits they could do a rebox deal with])
Hi Jim Thanks for the message. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for any Airfix upgrades. Improving existing ones ourselves using some of the etched brass sets that are available is likely to be about as good as it gets!
@peterfearon317 Lamentably, I agree (Revell, Tamiya & others are similarly lax' re' optimising classic kits). Airfix after all only ever did their 1/72 TSR-2 kit in 2005. due to considerable lobbying by a couple of well connected modellers. (which ultimately paid off rather well after a time and brought a very notable aircraft to mainstream modellers' attention, but is a rare exception to the rule re' the company taking consumer advice) I think, though, there is potential for a startup business to properly fill such gaps, and maybe in the process start a trend other companies take note of 🤔 .
Thanks Peter, it’s in my stash, great tip about the cockpit masking after market item, I was tentative about cutting my own
Thanks Brad. Glad you found it useful.
This is one of the best reviews I've seen. Does it come with crew as well? Couldn't hear the video, I'll do it later tonight I was working
Hello Cesar Thank you for your kind words! My kit did come with a pilot figure - very nicely moulded although I didn't use it - they don't all have one though. It depends on the 'luck of the draw', the rather silly gimmick that Border dreamt up add some novelty value to the kit. I don't know if they did this with the later kits like the Stuka. Hope you manage to get some sound eventually. Best regards Peter F
Is this not the 1/600 scale from Airfix?
Thanks for your interest. This is the 1/400 kit originally issued by Heller in 1980. It was reissued several times. most recently under the Airfix logo, but it's the same kit. The Airfix 1/600 kit is much older, dating from 1960 and portrays the Hood as she appeared in the mid 1930s. Despite its age, in many respects it's more accurate than the 1/400 version, and still builds into a nice model. Hope that clears things up!
This looks like an awesome kit...what you Master Modelers can do is simply incredible with modifications to the engines etc....would you recommend this over the 1/32 Tamiya Zero..I would say I am an Intermediate Modelers thx for any advice...
Hi Richard. Many thanks for your comments. I don't think I've been called a Master Modeler before! I'm not a fan of the Tamiya 1/32 Zero. It is expensive and contains gimmicks like a retractable undercarriage which you operate with a small Allen key, having removed a section from the wing to access it. The cockpit detail is good but no better than the Trumpeter, and still doesn't contain any of the pipework, which you have to add yourself. The Trumpeter is a more straightforward build and I would suggest is more what you're looking for. It doesn't cost any more than the Tamiya, either. Another option would be the Hasegawa 1/32 Zero. Much cheaper than either of the other two, it is a straightforward build but is really well produced and makes an excellent model. If I was going to build a Zero in 1/32 it's the one I'd choose, plus one or two upgrade sets which would still barely take it to the price of the Tamiya. Hope this helps!
Thank you Peter so much..will probably try the Hasegawa...they do make great kits ..I built some of their smaller scales and they all went together like butter..but also will take your advice and will go w the aftermarket parts...
Great video well presented. Thank you for the honest insight.. I have this and all the extra's to go with it.
Thanks for watching and feeding back. The model was hard work but the video has proved very popular. I hope to do the Infinity 'Kate' once I've sourced a sample. It would make an interesting comparison...!
Your audio was very distracting, had to turn on cc. Other than that very good build.
Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed building my Helldiver. Having to do a little extra work to build it, is what i like.
Thanks for the message. I hope you found the video helpful.
The kit sounds as problematic as the real plane.
Thanks for the message. It wasn't easy, but I'm glad I made the effort. It seems to have created a lot of interest.
Thank you for the build review, I appreciate your very informative style. I have this kit in my stash, I have sold most of my 1/48 and 1/32 kits, as I enjoy exclusively 1/72. I've still got ICM's I-16, Gloster Gladiator and the Cr.42 fighter-bomber version. They are great kits, like all newer ICM kits, but for a 1/72 guy there are just so huge. Italeri's 1/72 Cr.42 is really tricky, there's 'no large secure locating slots', unfortunately. I failed two kits, but now managed finishing one in my third attempt. I've got still two of them in my stash, so the suffering is not over yet. Otherwise quite nice kit, but awful vague attachment points for the struts, a nightmare really. ICM will release a 1/32 Hs 123, is it something that you are interested in?
Thanks for this. I'm becoming a bit of an ICM fan. An HS 123 in 1/32 would be an absolute 'must build', it's always been an appealing subject to me. If I couldn't get a review sample I'd happily buy my own. Good luck with the Italeri Cr.42. I remember building the old Revell kit about 30 years ago. I don't think it's very accurate but at least it's an easy build!
@@peterfearon317 Thanks, sometimes a little bit of good luck is needed when dealing with biplanes. I too like the look of Hs 123, and 1930s planes in general. I've built the 1/72 Avis / Amodel Hs 123, which is OK, I've got the Fly kit in the stash, it's more detailed with resin parts. And I've got also the 1/48 Gaspatch kit, it's probably one of the best kits ever in 1/48. But I'm so 1/72 crazy, that I might sell it, that's quite sad really. ICM has made enormous progress the last 10 years, and they are one of the few manufacturers that release aircraft kits every year, even now during the war.
Many years ago I built the Esci 1/48 Hs-123, as well as the 129. Obviously they were pretty basic kits even then but they didn't look too bad once finished. I recently built the ICM Ki-21 'Sally' and it's in the latest edition of Airfix Model World. Another really nice ICM kit.
Very nice! I did the old Monogram 48th kit last year, tough but fun project. I actually did the same squadron markings but A/C #201😅
Than you! Well done on completing the Monogram upgrade. I tried it myself many years ago but ran up the white flag after a couple of months of toil.
An imposing aircraft to be sure. I recall this was originally offered as a resin kit. She was hated for over speeding while diving and not allowing enough time for aligning the drop. Also the pull out was considered hair raising. Her good qualities were high cruise speed and distance. Although the SBD was no slouch or short legged.
Thanks John. Possibly an example of an aircraft that is best looked at on the ground rather than flown in the air!
Nice video question for ya sir do you use Microsoft PowerPoint to help make your videos?
Hi There Yes I do use PowerPoint. I find it easier to use and edit than a video camera. You can always import video clips into the slides if you want to. Just let me know if you need any more info. Best regards Peter F
Very nice!
Thank you!
Not entirely surprising that the SBD was kitted before the SOB Second Class. It was the superior aircraft. One carrier skipper had to be ordered to acept the Helldiver aboard his ship.
I believe another suggested they were best used as anchors...!
Very nice Peter.
Thank you. It was hard work but I thing the results just about justified the effort.
@@peterfearon317 👍 🙂
Very nice build Peter.
Thank you!
A beautiful build and very well presented video; nice to see something simple and easy to follow along to.. unlike some really rather overtly cinematic ones on here that lack any narration! I’ve got a couple of older Combrig kits from this era in the stash, both cost me very little; HMS Dreadnought, and Varyag. They won’t be my last; great little things and as you’ve presented, they build up nicely indeed.
Thank you! More releases are due very soon.
Great to see you are still active.
Thank you! I've been busy building. Three more videos appearing shortly.
Very nice
Thank you!
Awesome work. 👍
Thank you!
Cool, nice job! As i recall one of my favorite aspects of this kit was the surface detail. Rivet and overlapping sheet metal though probably way out of scale really got my attention when i was a kid. Trying to get one of these now to go with my B-17.
Thank You! I was pleased with how this one turned out. Good luck finding one - there's still plenty out there!
@@peterfearon317 thank you!
Well done big JPanther and video! Appreciate the kit comparison and showing the AM as like you said, unfortunately the scale is severely ignored! I bought my Academy kit years ago for the sole purpose of building it parked on a modern tri-axle Lowboy as a transport load for a museum, as I am also a truck builder. I believe I have the Aber set, but the tracks are a big concern as I need indiv. link detail under the roadwheels. Those Tamiya bits are as rare as hen's teeth. Thank you for posting, a big help that shows what I don't have to wonder of anymore. Cheers
Thanks for the message. Glad to read you enjoyed the video. I don't know why 1/24 or 1/25 isn't more popular either. Best regards
Looks like an interesting kit to build. You did a great job of it.
Thank you!
As an intermediate modeler and a huge Zero fan I ordered this beauty. 1/24 and only 193+ pieces? Am so excited to build this! Thank you for the video!!

Es un modelo soprendente!!.
Very well presented! Thank you, going to add this to my Christmas list!
Thanks for responding. Very pleased you found the presentation useful.
thanks for sharing this old kit, but seems with your hability : no so oldfashion today...1/32 ( with 1/24 airfix ) is the "Queen scale" for planes, I like... take care : )
