Just acquired a 59 F600 dump truck with a rebuilt 292. Has only a few thousand miles on it and is there any Specific oil or additives that you'd recommend to help with this type of motor? Truck fired up on the first crank after sitting after sitting for over 2 years . Maybe Restore and Protect ? Your opinion as this truck has the 4 speed with the single speed rear end . Don't anticipating pushing this past 45mph at anytime.
With any vintage style engine that has a flat tappet camshaft use a good ZDDP zinc additive.
@@mummertsspecialvinterests2721 Thank you.
We had one in a 59 Ford pickup. It had a hard life and was rebuilt in 1979 at about 70k. We treated it better than the previous owner and it's running great today. I don't know if the did this, but I know it got new bearings. I'd give any vehicle I have to get that old truck back but we sold it years ago. Present owner won't let go.
Very interesting. My calculations for our Y-block have always come out around 422cfm. Sounds like our math was about right! Thank you for this.
Tbi from holley, acess an your done no need for overprice jet, measuring, powerbowl kits.
Great video. I almost skipped it thinking I’d just pick a carb based on Eaton’s test results tables but I’m glad I stayed!
Question what is the v e of you 2 plain y block intake manifold ?
Well I'll leave all that to my tuner and other hyper intelligent super beings. My question is vac advance. If I've got this right yblock including FE distributors were set for manifold ports. My super charged and dual 4 performance street engines have HE pistons and have to have 91 oct minimum. The tuner recurved the distributors and did NOT connect the vac advances. The engines are very happy with excellent throttle performance for many years. He warned me the mileage would suffer a bit but not to connect the vac advances. Do you have an idea why he deleted them?
Part throttle cylinder pressure would be my geuss. A supercharger can go from vacuum to boost with small amount of throttle change in a hurry. If it works well you should probably leave it alone and have fun.
So I have a Holley 2110 lst 4691 which is rated for 300 cfm - but that is really 212 cfm at the equivalent inches of mercury (divide by 1.414) - even a Holley 500 gets you only to 353 cfm equivalent- so maybe I really do need that Mummert dual plane intake …
If you are running a 2 barrel you need to have 500 to get anywhere, (and as you seem to know the different flow ratings between 2 and barrel and 4 barrel), a 500 doesn't get you much.
But you're not saying a dual plane needs a bigger carb ?
@ I’d need that 450 - 500 cfm edlebrock for ease of tuning
@@TomSmith-cv8hk I havent seen the need for it.
Interesting, I know next to nothing about the Y block engine, except that Jon Kaase built one for engine masters. I found a 1963 Ford truck, dont know even what model, but it has a 292 engine.
Keep the Y Block content coming! Much appreciated
You guys are great at what you do and I wish you guys all the best!
Thanks guys great stuff as always
Glad to hear to from you guys, your website is jacked.
I'm wonder if you make enough parts and access to build a better 312 crate engine and it be affordable? That seems wood option if the avg. Joe can afford it I would love to put articles up 312 in my car with and AOD.
Thanks John great video!
Thank you for the update
You guys are cool doing the Y-block stuff. Keep up the outstanding work!
Thanks for the update, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!
happy thanksgiving Jeff & John!!
Will this crank and rod mod work on a 55 272 block with the stock crank? I’m in the LA area not far from the shop
If they had detergent oils and changes it often back then, would there have been this problem?
Were Ford engineers aware of this design weakness ? Or did it just show up after cars were on the road for a few years? Did other cars have this problem?
The engineers were aware but only so much they can do. Stock engines with less spring pressure, smaller cams and lower rocker ratios will prolong the inevitable. When you are building one of these engine for hot street or performance use issues will show up very quickly if not done properly.
@ thanks.. always wondered .. sometimes problems show up after a product is in use but other times it’s known but made anyway..
Can this be used on the 55 272 y block?
My machine shop got a 312 Y block a few days ago. I had never seen the intake ports before. I was amazed at the configuration of stacking them on top of one another. It would be similar to a dual plane intake.
Making the dual plane manifold plumbing easier was one of reasons behind the ports
What rear main seal kit for a 368 y block.
Where do you get the rear main seal rubber from?
Is building a 368 the same procedure?
Wow! Excellent analysis of Y block oiling issues. My engine experience varies from SBC and 410 race engines and Ford flatheads, not much in between. I recently helped a neighbor get a 55 T-bird running smoothly and was disturbed by the lack of oil to the right side valve train. Life long toolmaker, so I can appreciate the difference between .015 deep and .030 deep.

Anything you can do with a 55 ford y-block??
My truck water pump looks different. It has a bigger outlet without the recess so a car fan pulley doesn't fit. I've been trying to find an affordable smaller pulley for ages.
How is the new aluminum water pumps castings coming along?
Fantastic. It was a real pain to find someone to rebuild my truck water pump, and then pray it came back.
my bolts were so loose that i put a little blue lock tight on threads when installing the new one.
So what is the formula to figure the 3.0 valve area?
A Good Mild Acid Bath by a Professional Metal Stripper works wonders on clean and rust free. Especially on Flathead Ford Engine Blocks. 😊 Surgical Clean.
Just installed mine on my build today.. Nice set.
What about for a daily super moto that gets beat rather hard would you recommend stock bore or upgrading to a big bore I’d like more power but don’t want it to be unreliable
Stay stock bore if your going to put lots of miles on it
312 Thunder Bird vs Victoria 1956 had the same timing chain cover? The Victoria had the Holley tea pot carb, was sold to grandpa as 312. Here in the year 2024, I am wondering if they were pulling his leg. nice channel.
Hey Mr Mummert can you show more on the 368 Y block?
Hey that was good . Mine went from a gusher (old rope) to a few drops so I'mhappy. Maybe someday I'll try your method to seal completely...Thanks
I had a running 1959 292. Even with the rocker arm oil modification. Couldn't find anybody that wanted it. Went for scrap metal.
Tuff to do with the motor in the car/truck. Hoping mine is just the pan gasket.
FYI, Edelbrock made a four barrel aluminum manifold in 54 . It used the"tea-pot" flange bolt centers, and smaller runners. Despite the port mismatch it can be used on any Y-block, and the later carbs by using an adapter under the carb.
Brand new to Y blocks here
Hey if your still there Y blocks were the replacement of the Ford flathead V8. The Y block came in 272, 202 and 312. Ford used these motor in everything from trucks to Nascars with Paxton supercharged 312s.
I have a 64 292 Y Block that I will be rebuilding soon for my pizza truck build
from what later year heads would you say were the improved design?
Hi, I tried to contact you my email for an order. How can I contact you??
why the 292 block???
Because they work good!
Hopeful that is my street heads, some top quality workmanship!
