Fabricating a Custom ZF6 Transmission Mount
In this video I get the ZF6 transmission installed behind the 12V Cummins. To do this I need to attach the 12V/ZF6 adapter plate and start building my custom transmission mount. This utilizes two poly bushings, DOM tubing, and assembled by TIG welding. I then need to come up with a way to attach the mount from the transmission to the chassis. This is done by welding tabs onto the crossmember, I got lucky it landed in a great place, directly Infront of the original crossmember!

      @@barnbuiltbeaters Actually there are free schematics for this too online. Especially on russian forums. But I will not do it atm. I have to first start the cutter project and then think about height controller. I see you got pretty good cuts without it. Thanks for reply.

    I’m considering building the JDs Garage XL plans with the two sided overarm support. One concern I have with this system is the use of 3D printed parts. You mentioned that the JDs design is a copy of the Langmuir system. Does the Langmuir system use similar plastic parts or something more reliable? I like the “pay as you go” aspect of the JDs design, but my 3D printer is probably not up to the task. Ender 3 v2.

    • @barnbuiltbeaters
      @barnbuiltbeaters Місяць тому

      @kitmaira im actually not sure what Langmuir uses. I want to say it is aluminum but honestly not sure. I Printed my JD's design on my Ender 3 V2 out of PLA+ and it has held up well. If it's in your budget I recommend upgrading to a Bambu Labs model. They work much better, work with any material with their provided settings. It makes 3D printing much more enjoyable. The Ender 3 is good to get started though don't get me wrong. Good luck on your build!

    • @kitmaira
      @kitmaira Місяць тому

      I’m thinking that buying the Bambu would be much more expensive than buying the printed parts. I get way too little use out of my Ender as it is. Still figuring out what I want to do. Thanks.

      @ivanyalamov5109 thanks for watching! No issues with Z-axis other than some slop at the end of the cantilever. For touch off, I believe their is a setting in fusion you need to check or a line in G-code you need to add. I haven't used it in months so unfortunately I'm not much help. There is a group on Facebook you can join and ask "3D Printed Budget CNC Plasma Builders", most are building JD's table.

    What do you do about the Title issue. Since the title on these old ford trucks go to the frame and not the body. The VIN is stamped on the frame, there is none on the body, just warrantee tags.

      @barnbuiltbeaters Місяць тому

      That is a great question. I know when I registered my truck prior to taking it all apart, the guy used the VIN tag on the door jam. I suppose the worst case I can buy a junk frame from someone, cut the VIN out of the frame and weld it onto the new one. Not sure the legality of that but thats my first initial thoughts. I actually briefly looked over the original frame and was unable to find it. Could have been covered in grease though. I also have the Title.

    Your comment about buying the Langmuir I kinda disagree with. Im glad I built mine from JD because i know how its built and if it breaks down I know what to do. I also like the idea I built it as money dictated, meaning one week I had extra to spend, next week I didnt. With Langmuir I had to come up with the money all at once. as far as support JD has a facebook page now with tons of support, and I was able to email them as well while building mine. @@barnbuiltbeaters Frame swapped my 2wd f100 30+ years ago, needed a 4wd truck for hunting. On a Ford the easiest way is to frame swap. The cab alignment was ok, the bed mounting width not so much. The f250 donor had twin Dana 60’s F/R and a T18/Np205. Kept the 390 in the f100, the rest running gear was from the 78. Hunted with that truck ever since, but the body is now really rough so last year decided to make it more presentable after the 390 flat spotted the cam, currently doing a frame off. (Started as a 12v swap!) A sane man would get another body, but too much history with it. The 12v is basically stock (governor/valve springs, pump turned up, etc), frame is now a roller again, all running gear of the new version is bolted in. Well, if you know history, you'll recall the Dodge brothers made truck chassis for Henry way back when. They broke away from Ford and began producing their own vehicles. The early Dodge logos featured the Star of David. Now you know why Ford aligned with the Germans and hated the Jews. He hated Louis Chevrolet so much (OHV inline six) he refused to make inline six engines. When he did, it was an industrial flathead. Looks like we're coming full circle, 80s Ford body on 2000s Dodge chassis. The 12v Cummins and ZF6 will be icing on the cake...

    At the 6:10 mark you are turning an allen key to raise the cantilevered X axis to level it. I think I may be doing this wrong on my JD plasma table. I loosen the 8 bolts on the carriage that rides on Y axis to adjust the X axis level. I am going to have to go back and look at some of the instructions again to see if I am doing this wrong. To be honest this is an area I have struggled with and am very much looking forward to the THC to possibly take the leveling out of the equation.

    • @barnbuiltbeaters
      @barnbuiltbeaters 8 місяців тому

      I am sure you just saw they just released the THC but it is a pretty expensive option that many people probably dont need....maybe you do though. I think the budget friendly option is to build a duplicate Y axis (without the motor) which would keep everything level. The cantilever design is the worst part about the build...much more to be desired. I spent a good amount of time getting mine adjusted. If you tighten it too much, it wont roll. Go to that point and then back it off some. It will never be perfectly level, atleast not from my experience but has not affected cutting much. If you are like me, I do not need my cuts to be perfect, just close. A CNC plasma I use to speed up my fabrication process, not looking for perfection perfectly. Let me know if you need help, I am happy to try! Thanks for watching!

      @@timandrew4515 I found a video where someone added a caster wheel to the arm that rides on the table frame. I think for a quick fix this might work perfect. Havent used the table too much recently, so havent had the urge to fix it either! Let me know if you find a solution!

    Why ram frame ? Cummins ?

    • @barnbuiltbeaters
      @barnbuiltbeaters 8 місяців тому

      A few reasons actually! 1. Ram was the only truck manufacturer to offer coil springs both front and rear. I am thinking this would aid in ride quality 2. Because of the coil springs, the axles are already 4-linked (using that term as a general statement) 3. The axles are already proven to handle the torque of a diesel and that of modified Cummins. I am planning to build my engine up. Although most heavy duty trucks will. 4. Speaking of an engine, I wanted a 12V Cummins as the power plant and although a 12V was never installed in this year chassis, a 6.7 Cummins was and figured it may help with the installation process as 6.7 and 5.9 are very similar. 5. I never thought I would find this chassis (2018+ Ram 2500) that was affordable honestly. I managed to find this pretty local to me for a very reasonable price delivered. I never have fabricated like this before, and figured if I messed up shortening the wheelbase, at least I have the axles I could use or sell to make up the money I spent on the chassis. I realize some will not like it isn't on a Ford Chassis, and although that may have made it easier, I am pretty happy with how my build is turning out. Turns out a bunch of Dentside guys actually swap onto Dodge/Ram chassis, although typically 2nd gen chassis!

      VBENLEM 32 x 30 x 2.5 Inch... www.amazon.com/dp/B07XP6ZN7N?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share FYI, The pan they recommend is nicer than the one. heavier gauge metal. Also note, this one has a drain hole, nothing you couldn't plug but be aware. Thanks for watching!

    • @glenrock672
      @glenrock672 7 місяців тому

      @@barnbuiltbeaters I put a 1/4 turn PVC valve on the drain hole with a 90 elbow pointing down. I drain the water into a 5 gallon bucket after every day of cutting. I do have to lift the pan a little bit to get some of the water out since there is a lip on the drain plumbing. Works great! I don't know what you would do if you didn't have the drain. I mean trying to dump the water without the drain would be a mess as the pan is fairly thin and weak, you have the supports in there and the X axis would be in the way when trying to lift it to drain it . . . love the drain! LOL HIGHLY recommend putting in a drain if you buy a pan without one. With that said, a bottom drain might be better than a side drain . . .

    Two ratchet straps hooked to form an X work just fine as well, as long as the hoist has enough reach. Only $9.97 for a 4-pack for 500lb straps at Home Depot.

    Need to speed up that cut to eliminate the dross and make sure you're not using a fine cut nozzle, use a standard nozzle. Does the CNC table have torch height control?

    • @barnbuiltbeaters
      @barnbuiltbeaters 8 місяців тому

      I am still playing with speeds and plan on increasing as it has been helping a lot with dross. Thanks for the insight! Only one nozzle available for my Plasma (YesWelder CT2050) I believe. CNC does not have THC only z-probe. JD's Garage is working on THC but have not yet released it.

      It has been working pretty good for me! The 5" throat has gotten me a few times. Wish it was a bit bigger but I've just had to work around it. For the price, I can't complain too much. I have had blades break on me a few times. Not entirely sure why that is. I don't believe I am putting too much pressure tightening or pushing material through. I just swapped blade manufacturers and this blade seems to be holding up well. Let me know if you have any questions!

    I made simple cross beam, lengthened boom to clear lifting cylinder. While lifting bed up place a cinder block in bed sliding it in position to get the correct pitch by altering the center of gravity. One other suggestion, get an old wooden kitchen table, mount 4 swivel casters on tabletop corners. Now flip table over with legs pointing up, lower pickup bed on legs. Bed will now be very easy to roll around shop.
